(Ep 284) Youth And Gambling
2026/09/15
In this episode, I’m having an important conversation about gambling, online betting, and the growing impact these activities can have on our young people. Gambling advertisements are everywhere.  We see them during sporting events, on television, across social media, on YouTube, and through the apps and platforms our young people use every day. The messaging often makes gambling look exciting, glamorous and harmless. But what we don't see in those advertisements is what can happen when gambling becomes an addiction. And I’m especially concerned about our young people. Their brains are still developing and they may not fully understand risk, consequences or the value of money. At the same time, they are being exposed to gambling-like experiences through video games, fantasy sports, social media and emerging prediction markets.  Some of these activities may seem like harmless entertainment, but they can normalize behaviors that make gambling feel familiar and acceptable. (Ep 283) Take A Breath!
2026/09/07
In this episode of Nurah Speaks, I’m reflecting on the many issues competing for our attention—from news reports of wars and natural disasters to economic hardships with rising costs of gas and food to racial conflict plus the everyday responsibilities of working, studying, raising children, caring for aging parents, supporting our spouses and serving our communities. Sometimes, we simply need to take a breath. If you’re someone who cares deeply, stays involved, serves others, and is constantly trying to solve problems or make things better, I want you to know that you are valuable, you are needed, and the work you do matters. But taking care of yourself is also part of the work. In this episode, I share four practical ways to steady ourselves during turbulent times: 1.  Turn off the news and put down social media. 2.  Create systems, routines, and habits. 3.  Break big tasks into smaller, manageable pieces. 4.  Take a walk. The world may not calm down on our timetable, but we can learn to manage things in the middle of the storm. So, if you’ve been carrying a lot lately, this is your reminder:  Take a breath. Disconnect. Detach. Reset. The people you serve need you—but they also need you to be well enough to continue showing up.  And sometimes, serving ourselves is part of serving others. I hope these four steps help you find a little more peace, clarity, and steadiness in your day. (Ep 281) Six Leading Causes of Death for Black Americans
2026/08/10
In Episode 281, I build on my recent Know Your Numbers series by sharing data from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics on the six leading causes of death for Black Americans: Heart diseaseCancerUnintentional injuriesStrokeDiabetesAssault and homicideI break down each of these causes and explore the risk factors that contribute to them—from high blood pressure, poor diet, physical inactivity, obesity and tobacco use to distracted driving, medication-related injuries, falls and violence. While there are things we cannot control, including certain environmental exposures and inherited genetic traits, there are also many factors we can influence through our choices, habits, preventive care and lifestyle. I don’t want us to look at these statistics and feel like we’re doomed. I want us to recognize that, to a significant extent, our health is in our hands. I hope this episode encourages you to learn your numbers, understand your health risks and take action where you can. (Ep 280) Know Your Numbers: Body Weight
2026/07/27
In this final episode of my 'Know Your Numbers' series, I focus on body weight and why understanding this health metric is just as important as knowing your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. My goal isn't to promote fake beauty standards or shame anyone about their weight—it's to encourage all of us to pursue better health through informed choices. In This Episode, I Discuss:• Why body weight is an important health indicator.• How Body Mass Index (BMI) can be a useful screening tool, even though it isn't a perfect measure of health.• How carrying excess weight can contribute to: -High blood pressure -High cholesterol -Insulin resistance and diabetes -Joint pain and inflammation• How to achieve a healthier weight through simple lifestyle changes WITHOUT focusing on the scale. The overall message is simple. No matter where you're beginning, today is the right day to get started. And the BONUS is this: you don't have to change everything overnight. One healthy choice at a time will lead to meaningful change. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe to Nurah Speaks on YouTube and follow the podcast on your favorite streaming platform. (Ep 279) Know Your Numbers: Cholesterol
2026/07/20
In this episode of Nurah Speaks, I continue my Know Your Numbers series by focusing on one of the most important health markers we often overlook: cholesterol. After discussing blood sugar and blood pressure in previous episodes, I explain what cholesterol is, why our bodies need it and why it's so important to know your cholesterol numbers before they become a serious health issue. I also encourage all of us—especially within the Black community—to prioritize annual physicals, review our lab results and take advantage of free health screenings if health insurance is a barrier. Prevention and early detection can save lives. In this episode, I discuss: • Why knowing your cholesterol numbers matters • What cholesterol is and the role your liver plays • The difference between LDL ("bad") cholesterol and HDL ("good") cholesterol • How high cholesterol contributes to plaque buildup in the arteries • The connection between high cholesterol, heart disease, heart attacks and stroke • Simple lifestyle changes that can naturally improve cholesterol levels without medications. (Ep 278) Know Your Numbers: Blood Pressure
2026/07/13
In this episode of Nurah Speaks, I continue my Know Your Numbers series by focusing on one of the most important health metrics we should all understand: blood pressure. High blood pressure is often called the "silent killer" because many people experience no noticeable symptoms until a serious medical event occurs. That's why I believe knowing your numbers and monitoring them regularly can be life-saving. In this episode, I explain: What blood pressure is and what the systolic (top) and diastolic (bottom) numbers measure. Why regular blood pressure screenings are essential—even if you feel healthy. The difference between normal blood pressure and hypertension, and why early intervention is so important.I also discuss how uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage the heart, arteries, brain, kidneys, and other organs as well as increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney damage and other serious complications. Since lifestyle plays such a powerful role in blood pressure management, I share practical strategies that can help improve your numbers, including: Reducing sodium intake.Reading food labels carefully and recognizing hidden sources of sodium.Choosing whole foods over ultra-processed and packaged foods.Preparing more meals at home.Limiting processed meats and high-sodium restaurant meals.Managing stress through daily walks, stretching, and breathing exercisesMaintaining a healthy weight. I also encourage listeners to schedule annual physicals, build a relationship with a trusted healthcare provider and take advantage of free community blood pressure screenings if healthcare access is a challenge. My hope is that this episode serves as a reminder that small, consistent lifestyle choices can make a significant difference in protecting our health. By knowing our numbers and taking action early, we can improve not only our own well-being but the health of our families and communities. Thank you for listening to Nurah Speaks. (Ep 277) Know Your Numbers: Blood Glucose
2026/07/07
In this first episode of the Know Your Numbers series, I discuss why understanding your basic health numbers can help you make informed decisions before serious health problems develop.  The focus of this episode is blood glucose (blood sugar)—what it measures, why it matters, and practical steps you can take to maintain healthy levels. In This Episode: •Why knowing your health numbers is an important part of preventive care. •Why we shouldn't accept unhealthy numbers as "normal" simply because of age, race, or family history. •The difference between a fasting blood glucose test and an A1C test, and why both are valuable. •Healthy fasting blood glucose ranges and what elevated numbers may indicate. •How excess blood sugar can damage blood vessels, nerves, kidneys, eyes, and other organs over time. •Understanding insulin resistance and its role in Pre-diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Common symptoms of elevated blood sugar, including: Frequent urination Excessive thirst Fatigue Vision changes Sweet-smelling breath Why people with diabetes should pay close attention to foot health and circulation. Simple lifestyle changes that can help improve blood sugar levels: •Eat more whole, fiber-rich foods. •Reduce ultra-processed foods and sugary beverages. •Read food labels carefully and recognize hidden sugars. •Choose whole fruit instead of fruit juice. •Move your body after meals—even a short walk can make a difference. Coming Up Next: This Know Your Numbers series will continue with discussions on blood pressure, cholesterol, body weight and other important health markers we should understand. (Ep 276) Liberty or Death | Independence Day
2026/06/29
As July 4th approaches,  I explore what independence looks like. I discuss the importance of building strong communities that can educate our children, delivering adequate healthcare to our families and developing the means of sustenance rather than entrusting our needs entirely on outside systems.   I also reflect on the vulnerability that comes with dependence and why preparing today is essential for tomorrow. This episode is not a call for social isolation—it is a call for responsibility, organization and community-building.  I believe we must invest in institutions and our own future if we want to experience the kind of liberty we often celebrate but may not yet fully possess. (Ep 275) Another BOYCOTT???
2026/06/22
Episode 275 begins by honoring fathers, father figures, and the men who make meaningful contributions to their families and communities. As we celebrate Father's Day, I reflect on the irreplaceable role fathers play in providing guidance, protection, encouragement, and wisdom across generations. Then I turn to the tragic case of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton, who was killed in South Carolina after being accused of stealing bottled water from a convenience store. I discuss the recent acquittal of store owner Rick Chow and the public outrage that followed. I examine the broader questions surrounding pursuit, self-defense claims and the inability of victims to tell their own stories after their lives were been taken.   I also discuss proposed legislation known as the Cyrus Harlins Martins Pursuit and Deadly Force Accountability Act which seeks to create criminal penalties for private citizens who pursue someone, cause their death, and then claim self-defense. As this echos the tragic killing of Trayvon Martin, I explore concerns many people have about accountability and justice. Finally I share my perspective on boycotts as reactive measures and explain why I believe our communities must move beyond temporary economic withdrawals and focus on long-term self-sufficiency. Rather than simply withholding our dollars, I argue that we must become producers, builders and owners capable of meeting our own needs. Throughout the episode, I discuss economic independence, ownership, community development and the lasting impact of historical trauma on Black communities. I emphasize that while our history has shaped many of our current challenges, it does not prevent us from creating a different future. As we move beyond Juneteenth and approach Independence Day, I encourage listeners to think deeply about what true independence means. The path forward will require sacrifice, accountability, trust and a commitment to building institutions that serve our own communities for generations to come. (Ep 274) Beyond Politics: What Will We Do For Ourselves?
2026/06/15
In this episode of Nurah Speaks, I challenge the idea that Black progress can be achieved through moral appeals to the powerful or through political victories.  As I reflect on the sacrifices made during the Civil Rights Movement and the political realities we face today, I question if we have placed unrealistic expectations in systems that repeatedly prove limited. Our problems cannot be solved by simply voting the right people into office or by appealing to the conscience of those with economic or political power. Though I whole heartedly support civic engagement and recognize the value of local political participation, I do not believe that politics alone will save our people. In my view, Black people will be saved by Black people by what we do with and for one another. Throughout this episode, I explore the difference between civil rights and human rights, the fragility of political gains and how we are witnessing our elected representation being taken away.  I question the notion of equality if rights that are granted and amended can also be  removed by legislation. My central message is simple: regardless of election outcomes, we have to ask ourselves what we are willing to do for one another. If we want justice, equality and a progressive future, we must be prepared to build it together. (Ep 273) Prom-rageous!
2026/05/18
In Episode 273, I explore the growing trend of extravagant prom culture and how prom has evolved from a school dance into a highly performative social event fueled by social media, status symbols and public presentation, particularly in low income communities.  From luxury shoes,  jewelry and cars to elaborate prom send-offs and even helicopter arrivals, this episode explores the social and emotional motivations behind these celebrations.   This episode is not a criticism but a recognition of the emotional connection between deprivation, love and saying “yes” to our children and also a nudge for our community to think beyond the excitement, indulgence and joy of a solitary ‘moment’ and establishing a strong foundation for our young people's future. Episode Takeaways: Love should be expressed not only through moments, but through long-term preparation.Saying “no” can sometimes be just as valuable as saying “yes.”Prom is a milestone — not the “crowning achievement” of a young person’s life.Parents can celebrate responsibly while still helping children feel special. Our community should prioritize sustainable success over performative luxury. (Ep 272) Preventing Chronic Disease Through Food Choices
2026/05/04
In this episode, I speak directly to the health challenges facing the Black community and show the clear connection between lifestyle choices, food and chronic disease. This episode explores how generational eating habits, modern processed food and targeted marketing have contributed to widespread health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. It is emphasized that while these challenges are real, they are not irreversible. Through intentional changes in diet, awareness and discipline, individuals and families can reclaim their health and create a healthier future. This episode brings awareness and serves as a guide toward empowerment through everyday choices. Key Topics Impact of diet on health in the Black communityThe dangers of processed and GMO foodsThe importance of whole foods and organic eatingLifestyle adjustments for better healthThe connection between food industry marketing and health outcomesIf you would like to engage with the podcast, submit your listener questions to [email protected].  Listeners can also learn more by visiting NurahSpeaks.com. (Ep 271) Empowering Choices: How Information Shapes Our Health
2026/04/27
Are your choices empowering or holding you back? Let's talk about the hidden impact of what you eat.  Our lifestyle choices shape our health in ways we often overlook. From childhood, we are influenced by the foods we consume.   We must educate ourselves and our children about real nutrition versus manufactured "food" that just looks appealing.  The truth is, our choices are informed by the information we have. And when that information is skewed, our outcomes suffer.  Let’s commit to making better food choices together and retrain our palates for healthier options.  Stay informed, stay empowered. More on this in future episodes!   If you would like to engage with the podcast, submit your listener questions to [email protected].  Listeners can also learn more by visiting NurahSpeaks.com. (Ep 270) Bonnie Watson Coleman: An Inspiring Servant Leader
2026/04/20
In Episode 270 I reflect on a compelling conversation I attended featuring Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey and Donna Brazile, hosted by the Center for American Women and Politics. Being inspired by their discussion, this episode I explore the realities of public service, the misconceptions surrounding elected officials and the importance of community involvement beyond the ballot box. I share insights on leadership, sacrifice, collaboration and how we everyday people can play an active role in creating meaningful change. Important Takeaways Voting is just the beginning—community work continues after elections.Constituents can support elected officials beyond offering criticism by asking: “How can I help?” instead of “Why isn’t this fixed?”Practice kindness-you never know what someone is facing.
