Boundary Waters Podcast Ep. 135 - Exploring the line between adventure and disaster with writer Frank Bures
2026/10/23
In Episode 135 of the WTIP Boundary Waters Podcast we talk to Minnesota writer and columnist Frank Bures, author of the book "Pushing the River," (MNHS Press, 2025). With Frank as our guide, we explore spooky stories from deep in canoe country, including the terrifying tale of Sturgeon Narrows. We also hear the story of Frank's own near-death experience in the cold waters of the Mississippi River, and learn about the legacy of canoe racing in Minnesota, as shaped by the legendary 450-mile Paul Bunyan Canoe Derby, that took place between 1940 and 1960.
Boundary Waters Podcast Ep. 134 - A Family that Travels Full Circle
2026/09/28
The Whartons are a northwoods family of five who carve out time each year for at least one annual trip in the Boundary Waters. Kristin DeArruda Wharton and Nick Wharton talk about their family wilderness traditions and impart their shared wisdom about "getting out there" with kids. They also tell some of their favorite family paddling stories--accumulated over the past 21 years, including their youngest son Eli's dramatic rescue out of Wabakimi Provincial Park in July of 2026, due to surrounding wildfires.
Keep it Wild - How Resource Advisors help protect Wilderness during a wildfire
2026/09/04
Jasmine Baerg and Nancy Moundalexis both worked as USFS Resource Advisors on the West Zone of the Wilderness during an active 2026 wildfire season. In this interview we learn more about the work that Resource Advisors do in the field to help train and assist firefighting crews, which sometimes includes teaching firefighters how to paddle canoes and locate campsites in the Wilderness. Working alongside firefighting crews, the role of a Resource Advisor is to help lessen the long-term impacts of wildfire-supression efforts in ecologically sensitive areas like the BWCAW.
Boundary Waters Podcast Ep. 133 - Who am I without trees?
2026/08/28
The story of the 2026 canoe season in the Boundary Waters will be marked by wildfire, which forced many travelers to change their trip plans and explore other places in their quest to find a safe place to paddle. Tina Breister and Krystal Westfahl are two paddlers who had planned an extensive, three-week trip in the BWCAW, but had to pivot when their permit was cancelled and the BWCAW, Quetico and Wabakimi Provincial Parks were all closed due to dangerous wildfire conditions. In this episode, we hear their story and learn how their alternative trip to the Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in Ontario challenged them and caused them to re-think the focus of future trips. They describe the stark beauty and simultaneously hard conditions of the fire-scarred landscape, making them what Tina calls "ironic fire refugees." It was a difficult trip that left them asking the question "who are we without trees"?
Boundary Waters Podcast Ep. 132 - Fire Season
2026/07/23
When this episode was recorded and later posted on July 23, 2026, Ely resident and Wilderness guide LynnAnne Vesper had been evacuated from her home due to the Camp Fire--the closest of several fires burning in the Superior National Forest, the Boundary Waters Wilderness and Quetico Provincial Park. The fires were ignited during a lightening storm that moved across the region and into Ontario, Canada on July 7th, 2026. When the evacuation order was issued, Vesper was on a Boundary Waters trip in the numbered lakes area east of Ely. In this candid conversation, she shares her thoughts on "the unprecedented nature of these fires," including her personal observations on the conditions that were present in the Wilderness before the storm moved through, including the prevalence of dead Balsam Fir trees caused by Spruce Budworm, unusually hot, dry weather and other factors that created explosive fire conditions across the region. Vesper also explains her understanding of the term "natural" fire and what she views as public misconceptions about the history of wildfire in the Boundary Waters, and gives an update on smoke conditions and community morale in Ely. We also speak with Erik Carlson, fire technician and "burn boss" for the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe, who offers historical and cultural context about fires, prescribed burns and wildfire management as it relates to the BWCAW. To follow current wildfire and evacuation updates visit the Superior National Forest Incident Information page.
BW Podcast Ep. 131 - Kawishiwi Triangle Part 2, with Paul Schurke
2026/06/22
Paul Schurke is a business owner and winter adventurer from Ely, Minnesota. In this episode Paul shares stories about the deep human history of the Kawishiwi Triangle and the White Iron Chain of lakes, including the site of a Laurel-era settlement on Birch Lake and the Ojibwe and Finnish cultural history of those waterways. He also updates us on two recent maps that feature Ojibwe names for lakes in that part of the Border Country, in collaboration with Gakijiwanong First Nation (Lac LaCroix) and the Bois Forte Ojibwe band. Paul also shares his thoughts on proposed copper mining close to the Wilderness and how new mining relates to the old mining history of the area which predates modern times.
BW Podcast Ep 130 - Kawishiwi Triangle with Dave & Amy Freeman
2026/06/11
Dave and Amy Freeman are wilderness travelers and world adventurers who are based in the Kawishiwi Triangle, an area that dips in and out of the Boundary Waters Wilderness. In this conversation, they take us on an imaginary trip along the Kawishiwi River and share stories about how their lives and adventures intersect with this area, including on their wedding day. As advocates of wilderness protection and clean water, Dave and Amy also share their thoughts on the 2026 reversal of a 20-year extractive mining ban in the buffer zone around the Kawishiwi Triangle and how the proposed Twin Metals copper-nickel mine would change the land and waterscape of this multi-use area of the Wilderness.
Keep it Wild - Get the Lead Out to Save Loons
2026/06/02
Loons are an icon of the Boundary Waters Wilderness and are the State Bird of Minnesota. But did you know that the time between Memorial Day and the 4th of July is the most dangerous time for loons, and that about 25% of loon deaths are attributed to lead poisoning? In this conversation with Kelly Amoth, administrator of the "Get the Lead Out" program at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, we learn about the connection between the lead fishing gear in our tackle boxes and the health and survival of loons. Kelly also shares information on what anglers can do now to help protect loons and other water birds. She also gives us the scoop on the MPCA's Rebate Program for small businesses who want to make the switch to selling lead-free tackle. To learn more search "Get the Lead Out" at pca.state.mn Keep it Wild is a regular feature of the WTIP Boundary Waters Podcast.

He also shares what it's like to catch brook trout in spite of tricky ice conditions after significant snowfall. Keep it Wild - Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center, and Keeping Wild Bears, Wild
2026/03/19
As paddlers gear up for the spring season, we reached out to Chris Wiese at the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center (GWDC) in West Yellowstone, Montana, to learn about their collaboration with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC), and how their "grizzly ambassadors" help to certify food storage products as "bear resistant," as part of a wider effort to prevent human and bear conflict and ultimately keep wild bears, wild. An IGBC certification applies to all species of bears, including the black bears who coexist with humans in the BWCAW. Boundary Waters Podcast Ep. 127 - Photography and Public Land Preservation with Bryan Hansel
2026/02/26
Bryan Hansel is a Grand Marais, Minnesota landscape photographer and advocate for wilderness and outdoor activities. In this far-reaching conversation, Bryan shares the historic role that art and photography have played in the preservation of public lands, from the establishment of the first National Parks through today. We also learn about some of his solo trips into the wilderness that were inspired by historical events and canoe routes, and discuss the link between making calculated risk assessments ahead of a canoe trip, and the need for environmental risk assessments ahead of decisions related to mining and other industrial impacts to public lands. He also shares his perspective on the use of generative AI in nature photography and why authenticity in photography and art is important--both for the future of artists as well as wilderness areas like the BWCAW. 2026/01/30

The work involved a team of sled dogs that were used to haul building materials into the remote portion of the trail, which is part of the BWCAW.
