Human Intelligence

What happens to us when someone else is suffering? Do we rush in to fix, minimize, investigate, or quietly slip out the back door? This sermon dives into one of the oldest and most profound books of Scripture, the book of Job, to help us understand what suffering really reveals about who we are. Job was a righteous man who lost everything, not because of some hidden sin, but because of a mysterious heavenly reality unfolding beyond his view. His story forces us to confront a truth we often resist: suffering is not a simple equation. It cannot always be explained, controlled, or reasoned away. The friends who came to sit with Job in silence did something beautiful at first, but when they opened their mouths, they tried to shrink the mystery of pain into a tidy formula. We do the same thing. We reach for platitudes and quick fixes because the existence of suffering in someone else's life reminds us that it could arrive at our own door. But Job modeled something different. He mourned, he lamented, and then he turned directly toward God. He did not want answers from his friends. He wanted a court with God himself. That longing points us toward something deeply human: in our deepest pain, only the presence of God truly satisfies. This message invites us to stop shrinking our world out of fear and instead move toward suffering, our own and others', with the courage that comes from knowing God is already moving toward us.

What does it mean to be truly human in an age where technology is reshaping how we think, connect, and even make decisions? That question sits at the heart of this exploration into one of the oldest and most practical books of the Bible: Proverbs. Rather than cataloging the dangers of artificial intelligence, we take a different approach entirely, diving deep into ancient wisdom to understand what genuine human intelligence looks like. The book of Proverbs, positioned at the center of Scripture's five wisdom books, was never meant to be a list of rules. It was meant to be a conversation, a father speaking to a son, one generation pouring into the next, passing along the kind of knowledge that no algorithm can replicate. Wisdom, we discover, is relational at its core. It lives in the spaces between efficiency and connection, between getting the right answer and being known by someone who walks with us through the consequences of our choices. When we lean too heavily on technology for guidance, we gain information but risk losing the investment that comes when real people speak into our real lives. The wisdom of Proverbs meets us in those in-between spaces, the dinner table dynamics, the temptations that look appealing on the surface, the fools in our lives we keep trying to reason with. It is ancient, yes, but it is startlingly alive for the world we are navigating right now.
