The Essential Guide to Social Security Timing, Taxes, and Legacy
2026/05/06
Social Security Explained: What Every Retiree Needs to KnowFind out how the “Beyond Break Even” approach differs from simply choosing the age to claim Social Security benefits based on break-even calculations. After years of resisting the idea of inviting financial planners onto the show, I’m making an exception for this important conversation. My guests, Russ Gaiser and Mike Hoeflich—co-authors of the bestselling book Beyond Break Even—are not your typical financial advisors. They specialize in Social Security claiming strategies and are passionate about helping people make informed decisions for a more secure and fulfilling retirement. In this episode, we uncover the five essential pillars of Social Security optimization and debunk some enduring myths along the way. Whether you’re years away from retirement or already planning your transition, you’ll learn why Social Security is much more than just a break-even calculation—and how intentional choices today can bring you peace of mind, increased wealth, and true freedom in your golden years. Here are 3 key takeaways everyone approaching retirement should know about Social Security: Don't Make Social Security Decisions in a Vacuum: Optimizing your benefits goes far beyond simply deciding when to file. Consider how Social Security fits with your broader retirement plan, including taxes, other income sources, and long-term goals (12:45).Taxation on Social Security Isn't One-Size-Fits-All: About 90% of recipients pay no tax or minimal tax on their benefits, but your specific situation—other income, the timing of filing, and even your state of residence—matters (18:23).Coordination and Legacy Planning Are Critical: Social Security optimization isn't just about your monthly benefit—it's also about coordinating with your spouse's strategy and planning for survivor and legacy benefits, ensuring financial security for loved ones (32:31). Moments 00:00 Rethinking retirement income strategies 05:09 Educator-turned-financial advisor journey 09:03 Meeting and teaming up with Russ 11:35 Social Security planning essentials 14:54 Building a cohesive vision 17:26 Understanding Social Security taxes 23:43 Understanding Social Security income limits 25:24 Understanding Social Security Limits 30:41 Importance of financial coordination 33:28 Understanding retirement benefit ages 37:14 Understanding spousal and survivor benefits 40:51 Concerns about retirement savings 44:29 Contact Russ and Mike FAQ's What are the five pillars of Social Security optimization discussed in this episode? The five pillars of Social Security optimization discussed are timing, taxation, coordination, longevity, and legacy. These pillars guide individuals in making informed decisions about when and how to claim Social Security for maximum benefit. How does working past age 70 affect your Social Security benefits? Working past age 70 does not increase your Social Security benefits, as benefits stop growing at that point, and you cannot accrue additional delayed retirement credits. RUSS GAISER advises that you should always file for benefits by age 70, regardless of your employment status, to avoid missing out on payments. Why do RUSS GAISER and MIKE HOEFLICH believe Social Security is secure for the future? RUSS GAISER and MIKE HOEFLICH believe Social Security is secure because 80% of benefits are funded directly through the FICA payroll tax and Congress has consistently acted to prevent shortfalls. They explain that even if the trust fund runs dry, most benefits would still be payable, and legislative options are available to maintain funding. Grieving Your Way
2026/04/15
I’m speaking to you directly from my heart. This week marks the fifth anniversary of my baby brother’s passing, and it’s been a difficult time for my family. As I reflect on my own experience with grief, I want to share what I’ve learned—about the many ways people move through loss and how important it is to be kind to yourself and to others during this journey. I’ll talk about the well-known stages of grief and why it’s absolutely okay to grieve in your own way, on your own terms. I’ll share stories from my neighborhood and my family, from neighbors who find comfort living alone after loss to others who choose to remarry quickly. I believe there’s no right or wrong way to grieve, and we all deserve the space to do it in the manner that feels right for us. If you’re grieving, supporting someone who is, or simply seeking to understand more about the process, I hope this episode encourages you to be gentle, to stop judging, and to start listening with empathy. May it bring you comfort, perspective, and the reminder that kindness is key. Email me, Lisa Stockdale, anytime at [email protected] Aging in Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale is sponsored by HomeCaire. Author Cammie McGovern and The Last Letters of Sally and Walter
2026/04/01
I sit down with author Cammie McGovern, whose latest book, The Last Letters of Sally and Walter, is set to hit shelves soon (April 2026). Cammie brings her wealth of experience as a novelist and teacher to the conversation, sharing the inspiration behind her new work—a heartwarming story about love, friendship, and new beginnings in the later years of life. Set in a vibrant retirement community, Cammie's novel centers on Sally, a 73-year-old Scrabble prodigy, and Walter, her club leader and soon-to-be companion on and off the Scrabble board. The story beautifully explores the power of connection, the importance of lifelong learning, and the joys of forming rich relationships in your golden years. We also talk about the realities of aging, the meaningful friendships that blossom later in life, and the importance of seeing older adults authentically represented in books and on screen. So whether you're an older adult, an adult child, or simply interested in stories that celebrate life at every age, this episode is for you. 3 Key Takeaways: Friendship and New Beginnings: Later-life communities offer incredible opportunities for new friendships and even love, dispelling the myth that meaningful connections belong only to the young.Representation Matters: We need more fiction and media that highlight the complexity, humor, and vibrancy of older adults—because aging is living, not merely enduring.Choices and Joy in Aging: Life’s final chapters are filled with options. With curiosity and planning, aging can be a time of growth, fun, and fulfillment. Immersive and Community-Driven Travel Experiences for Older Adults
2026/03/18
If you’ve ever dreamed of spending time truly living in Florence, Paris, Portugal, or somewhere off the beaten path, this episode will inspire you to explore the world—and your own joy—at any stage of life. Welcome to another episode of Aging In Full Bloom. I’m Lisa Stockdale, your host, and today I’m bringing you a conversation that reimagines what travel can look like for older adults. I’m joined by Andrew Motiwalla, founder and CEO of The Good Life Abroad—a company that takes travel beyond sightseeing tours and solo adventures in unfamiliar cities. In this episode, I talk with Andrew about his unique, immersive programs that bring together people aged 55 and over for month-long stays in beautiful European cities. We discuss how these experiences are designed to help you build community, learn new things, and add real joy to your life—what Andrew calls expanding your “joy span.” We also get into the practicalities you need to consider, like health care abroad and mobility, all while focusing on intentional, meaningful travel that goes way beyond checking places off your bucket list. Here are 3 key takeaways for those considering the next chapter of exploration: Community Amplifies Joy: Traveling alongside a cohort—not just as tourists, but as connected “community members”—creates lasting relationships, increases joy, and transforms the travel experience into something much deeper.Support with Independence: Programs like The Good Life Abroad provide the perfect balance—independence and flexibility to explore, with support from local community managers and fellow travelers, plus essentials like health coverage and local insights.Intentional Travel Is Transformational: “Checklist” tourism is fine, but setting intentions and embracing the challenge of learning, adapting, and building community can turn each trip into a source of joy and personal growth—at any age. FAQ's What is community-driven travel for older adults, as explained in this episode? Community-driven travel for older adults means joining a cohort to live abroad for at least a month, fostering real connections and shared experiences, rather than just touring or traveling alone. Andrew Motiwalla describes it as living independently with the support of a local community manager and new friends, amplifying joy through relationships 06:01. How does The Good Life Abroad program support travelers during a month-long stay in Europe? The Good Life Abroad program arranges fully-equipped apartments, organizes activities three times a week, and provides local support through a community manager who helps each traveler set personal goals and solve problems, including healthcare needs 12:07. Before arrival, participants meet virtually, and on-site, they receive guidance, community events, and 24/7 access to support in case of questions or emergencies. How does immersive, community-based travel increase joy for people over 55? Immersive, community-based travel increases joy for people over 55 because it combines learning, adapting, overcoming challenges, and building relationships, all of which have been shown to boost happiness in later life 07:25. As Andrew Motiwalla explains, sharing new experiences with a supportive group amplifies joy and creates longer-lasting fulfillment, or "joy span." Can Smelling Essential Oils Protect Your Brain as You Age?
2026/03/04
If you’ve felt your sense of smell is slipping as you age, know someone struggling with dementia or Parkinson’s, or just want to boost your brain health with a simple daily practice, this episode is for you. Welcome to Aging In Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale! In this episode, I sit down with my special guest, Jonathan Askholm, to explore the fascinating and often overlooked world of olfactory training—the art and science of strengthening your sense of smell. Together, we dive into how our nose isn’t just about pleasant aromas or powerful memories; it’s deeply connected to brain health, cognition, mood, and our overall well-being. Jonathan Askholm shares his personal journey—from corporate wellness into a passionate advocate for olfactory training—sparked by his own family’s experience and compelling scientific studies. Through our conversation, I discovered some surprising truths, like how the olfactory system is the only sense capable of regenerating neurons throughout life, and why smell training is now being recommended to improve memory, mood, and even help those recovering from illnesses like COVID-19. If you’ve felt your sense of smell is slipping as you age, know someone struggling with dementia or Parkinson’s, or just want to boost your brain health with a simple daily practice, this episode is for you. Let's learn why smell just might be our most underrated sense—and how it could become your secret weapon for healthy aging. Read more about it! https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9891899/ https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/olfactory-training-during-sleep-could-help-your-memory/ https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/how-my-brain-works/202410/can-smell-training-improve-memory 3 Key Takeaways: You can actually “train” your sense of smell. Regular, intentional exposure to specific scents can help sharpen your sense of smell and even regrow some neural pathways.Olfactory training boosts more than just your nose. Studies show it can improve memory, mood, and overall cognitive function, especially in older adults. It’s simple and affordable. All you need are concentrated scents like lemon, clove, rose, and eucalyptus—just a few minutes, twice a day, can make a difference. FAQ's What is olfactory training, and how can it benefit brain and memory health? Olfactory training is a practice using concentrated single-scent essential oils like lemon, clove, rose, and eucalyptus, intentionally sniffed twice daily to improve or restore the sense of smell. Scientific studies show this boosts brain and memory health and can enhance cognitive function, mood, and even flavor perception. How do you actually perform olfactory training at home? To perform olfactory training at home, smell four different concentrated essential oils (lemon, eucalyptus, rose, clove) twice a day for 20–30 seconds each, ideally using inhaler-style kits for safe, consistent use. Consistency is key: you’ll see noticeable results in the sense of smell and possible cognitive improvements after regular daily practice for several weeks. Why is olfactory training not more widely recommended despite strong scientific support? Olfactory training remains under-promoted because the sense of smell is the least understood and understudied sense in neuroscience, despite mounting robust studies confirming its benefits. As Jonathan Askholm explains, there is little public health messaging about it and general skepticism about such a simple, low-cost intervention, even though evidence and experts strongly support its use. How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Life for Older Adults
2026/01/21
Whether you’re excited by new technology or wary of its risks, I invite you to listen in as we talk about the real-world opportunities and challenges AI brings to our lives. In this episode of "Aging In Full Bloom," I’m tackling the complex and sometimes intimidating world of artificial intelligence—and what it means for older adults. I’m joined by Henry Quinlan, an author and speaker who’s spent years teaching seniors about technology, and together we break down the basics: what AI really is, how it works, and where it’s headed. Henry Quinlan shares eye-opening examples, like using AI to write personalized messages, plan trips, or even improve recipes at home. But we also dig into the tough questions—loss of jobs, the lack of government regulation, and how AI might impact our sense of connection and companionship. There’s even talk about the possibility of using AI for emotional support, which, to be honest, raises some mixed feelings in me. My goal is to help you see both sides, and to remind you that, even in a fast-moving digital world, staying connected and cherishing humanity is more important than ever. Moments 00:00 "AI: From Curiosity to Fear" 04:30 "Using Jasper for Creative Tasks" 08:09 "AI Transforming Writing and Memory" 12:50 "AI Revolutionizing Education and Medicine" 14:33 AI Companions for Seniors 17:50 "Blurry Lines of AI Logic" 20:33 "Google Health: A New Tool" 26:23 Individual Birthday Dinners with Grandkids 28:58 "Positive Insights for Older Adults" Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone navigating tech and aging: AI creates meaningful connections and practical support for seniors - From personalized recipe suggestions to virtual companionship tools, AI can help older adults stay engaged, creative, and connected—including bridging generational gaps with grandchildren.Rapid advancement brings both excitement—and uncertainty - While AI opens doors for healthcare, travel planning, and learning, it’s also shifting job markets and raising questions about emotional dependence and loss of human touch.Embrace, Explore, but Stay Vigilant - Henry Quinlan encourages seniors to try out AI tools to discover their benefits. However, he reminds us to proceed thoughtfully and be aware of potential risks. FAQ's What are the main pros and cons of AI for older adults discussed in this episode? Henry Quinlan highlights several pros for older adults, including using AI for companionship, improved social and family connections, personalized health advice, recipe creation, and travel planning. However, he also discusses cons such as job loss, overly fast technological change, concerns about empathy and emotional dependence on AI, and the lack of government regulation. How can seniors safely use AI to connect with family and manage daily life? Henry Quinlan suggests seniors can use AI tools to communicate with grandchildren, personalize recipes, plan trips, and even redecorate homes. He emphasizes experimenting with AI in a careful, curious manner and being mindful of safety by choosing reputable and well-controlled AI platforms. Why does Henry Quinlan think AI's rapid growth is both exciting and scary for seniors? Henry Quinlan is impressed by AI's capabilities but worries its rapid advancement outpaces society's ability to manage risks, potentially causing job losses and emotional challenges, especially for seniors. He believes AI development is moving “much too fast,” with insufficient regulation and potential threats to both personal interactions and established industries. Warning Signs and Helpful Advice for Older Drivers and Their Loved Ones
2025/12/24
I had the opportunity to speak with Melanie Henry, who specializes in driver rehabilitation and cognitive driving assessments for older adults. If you have aging loved ones or work with older adults, this episode is an invaluable listen. Key Takeaways: Recognizing Warning Signs Matters: Subtle changes—like increased irritability while driving, new dents or scrapes, or changes in social driving habits—could signal it’s time to reassess driving abilities.Compassionate Conversations Are Key: When approaching this sensitive topic, coming from a place of care, preparation, and concrete examples (like ride-alongs) makes all the difference. Avoid assumptions based merely on age.Assessment & Independence: Tools now exist to objectively assess driving safety, combining cognitive and on-road evaluations. Many older adults remain safe drivers, and having a clear, unbiased assessment can provide much-needed peace of mind for everyone involved. This conversation is never easy, but with the right information and a compassionate approach, we can prioritize safety while honoring independence. Aging in Full Bloom 101
2025/12/10
What I’ve Learned About Aging from Our Guests and My Own Journey In my milestone episode, I take a moment to reflect on some of the biggest lessons learned from years of conversations, stories, and experiences in aging and senior care. Whether you’re working in the aging space, an older adult yourself, or caring for someone you love, here are a few key takeaways you might find valuable: Be Prepared, Beyond the Financials So many guests have talked about planning ahead—not just financially, but also emotionally and socially. It’s easy to put off these conversations but essential for a smoother journey as we age. Good People (and Programs) Are Out There While we often hear about sad stories in senior care, there are still so many passionate people and service organizations making a big difference in the lives of older adults. Why we do what we do really matters! Stay Connected & Share Your Stories If there’s one thread throughout every episode, it’s the power of connection and storytelling. Staying connected not only combats loneliness but also keeps our stories—and those of our loved ones—alive. Thanks to our amazing listeners for engaging, sharing feedback, and being part of the conversation. Here’s to continuing this journey together! If you have topics you’d like to see covered, I’d love to hear from you. Email me, Lisa Stockdale, anytime at [email protected] Aging in Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale is sponsored by HomeCaire. Author Don Achkin and The AfterWork: Finding Fulfilling Alternatives to Retirement
2025/11/26
If you’re wondering what the next chapter after your career might look like, or you’re already there, this conversation is all about embracing "the after-work" years as a time of excitement and fulfillment. I sit down with Don Akchin, the author of "The AfterWork: Finding Fulfilling Alternatives to Retirement." We talk about the realities of retirement today, pushing back against the myth that it’s supposed to be an endless vacation. Instead, Don and I talk about why most Americans can’t—and maybe shouldn’t—aspire to a life of nonstop leisure. Through his own story and research, he shares how retirement can actually be the start of something new: a time for creativity, personal growth, and renewed purpose, whether that’s through volunteering, part-time work, or picking up new hobbies. Moments 00:00 "Writing Challenges and Support" 05:45 Leisure Doesn’t Equal Happiness 06:46 "Happiness Beyond Financial Planning" 10:16 Earning in Retirement Insights 14:48 Volunteering Options for Everyone 17:08 "Retirement: A New Beginning" Here are three key takeaways: Retirement isn’t the end—it’s a new beginning. As Don shares, most of us have 20-30 years post-career that can be used for growth, contribution, and self-discovery. The idea of endless leisure is neither realistic nor truly fulfilling for most Americans.Fulfillment comes from engagement, not just relaxation. Whether it’s volunteering, part-time work, or pursuing a lifelong passion, purpose and connection are central to happiness in our later years. It’s okay to take risks. The pressure is off! The “after work” years are an opportunity to explore, make mistakes, and try out new paths without the stakes being as high as before—embrace it. Author Tom Marks and Coming Of Age In Retirement
2025/11/12
Whether you’re already retired, considering it soon, or just curious about what lies ahead, this episode will leave you feeling supported, inspired, and maybe even a little understood. Welcome to another episode of "Aging In Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale"! In today’s conversation, I welcome bestselling author Tom Marks, whose latest book, "Coming of Age in Retirement: An Advertising Executive Story of Enlightenment and Revelation," is making waves across multiple categories—from aging to mental health. Join us as Tom Marks shares his candid journey from a high-powered advertising executive to navigating the often-overlooked emotional challenges of retirement. In this episode, he opens up about the unexpected struggles that come with leaving behind a decades-long career, the myths perpetuated by advertising about what retirement “should” look like, and the power of letting go and finding individuality in this new phase of life. Tom and I have a heartwarming and honest discussion about the realities of aging, why financial planning is just one small piece of the puzzle, and how embracing gratitude and self-discovery can lead to genuine happiness. Hear practical wisdom, personal stories, and a fresh perspective on finding your own path of happiness in retirement. Moments 00:00 "Aging Insights with Tom Marks" 05:37 "Peaceful Retiree Transition Project" 08:46 "Escaping the Hamster Wheel" 11:53 Ageism in Advertising Exposed 16:39 "Individuality in Senior Demographics" 19:35 Struggling with Retirement Identity 24:35 Letting Go of Lifelong Sprint 25:45 "Gratitude Meditation for Joy" 30:40 "Apology and Gratitude: Award Speech" 33:10 "Life After Work Reflections" Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone thinking about life after their career: Retirement is an emotional transition, not just a financial one. Tom Marks shared that even with decades of financial planning, he felt lost after leaving the business he had built for over 40 years. Emotional preparation matters!Happiness comes from the path itself, not chasing it. Inspired by a Buddha quote (“There is no path to happiness. Happiness is the path.”), Tom Marks realized fulfillment isn’t about chasing goals, but appreciating what’s in front of you—like family, nature, and the small joys each day.Individuality matters in retirement. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, despite what advertising and society might suggest. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. Tom Marks encourages everyone to find their own “path of happiness,” whatever that looks like. How to Celebrate Yourself: Making Birthdays Special After 40, 50, 60 and Beyond
2025/10/29
If you’ve ever felt ambivalent or even anxious about your birthday, stick around—you’ll find plenty of inspiration and insights in this episode! Welcome to another episode of Aging in Full Bloom with Lisa Stockdale! I’m Lisa, your host, and today I have a truly special guest joining me—Tamar Hurwitz-Fleming, author of How to Have a Happy Birthday and the How to Have a Happy Birthday Workbook. In this conversation, Tamar and I talk about the complicated emotions that can surround our birthdays, especially as we grow older. We chat about everything from why birthdays can sometimes leave us feeling blue to how we can reclaim the day as a joyful, intentional celebration. Tamar shares her personal story of moving from heartbreak on her 18th birthday to discovering the power of creating her own happiness. Together, we explore practical tips for planning a birthday that really lights you up, letting go of unrealistic expectations from others, and treating your birthday like the major personal holiday it truly is. We also talk about facing milestone birthdays, navigating the realities of aging, and embracing each year with gratitude and purpose. Plan ahead and create the experience you want—it’s your personal New Year! Release Unrealistic Expectations: Many birthday disappointments come from expecting others to deliver joy for us. Be direct about what you want, and don’t be afraid to ask for it. Embrace Aging as a Privilege: Each birthday is a celebration of life and a reminder of the unique journey you’re on. Rather than dreading “big numbers,” honor the wisdom and growth you’ve gained. How to Improve Short Term Memory
2025/10/15
If you’re looking for simple strategies to sharpen your mind and enrich the quality of your life as you age, you’ll find plenty of inspiration and actionable advice here. Join us as we celebrate the joys of learning, growing, and blooming—at every age. Welcome to Aging In Full Bloom! I’m Lisa Stockdale, and in this episode, I’m thrilled to welcome Angie Dortch—an educator, caregiver, and the creative mind behind a unique wellness program designed just for us, the active aging community. Angie shares her journey, inspired by caring for her mother and her background in the performing arts, and together we dive into the importance of not just aging, but learning how to age well. In our conversation, Angie introduces practical, easy-to-use memory tips—like her object recall exercises—that I personally tried out (and loved!). We laugh about the everyday struggle of finding our keys, and Angie reassures us that those little lapses don’t mean we’re losing our minds. We also explore the value of staying socially connected, embracing lifelong learning, and facing the future with enthusiasm rather than dread. Moments 00:00 Pioneer of Holistic Wellness 03:10 Neglected Wellness for Aging Adults 09:36 "Social Connection Programs for Seniors" 10:37 Virtual Community Initiative During COVID 15:46 Group Dynamics and Decision-Making 17:52 Experiential Learning Practice 22:34 Memory Exercise and Mental Flexibility 24:20 "Mastering Attention and Presence" 27:06 Embrace Aging with Enthusiasm Here are my top three takeaways: Learning How to Age Is a Lifelong Skill: Just like becoming a teenager, a parent, or a professional, aging well is something we must actively learn. It doesn’t just happen—we’re always honing new skills.Intentional Practice Improves Memory: Angie’s “object recall” activity is a simple yet powerful exercise. Place a personal item in a designated spot, write down where you put it, and try to recall its location later. This intentional act of focusing your attention really does work!Social & Emotional Wellness Are Just as Important as Physical Health: Loneliness is a major challenge for aging adults. Angie’s programs encourage group work and personal connection to keep the mind flexible and the heart full. How to Move Your Parents Without Family Drama or Stress
2025/10/01
If you’re facing the challenge of helping your parents move or wondering how to open those tough conversations about the future, this episode is full of guidance, support, and smart strategies to help you—and your family—thrive at every stage. Welcome to another episode of Aging in Full Bloom! In this episode, I sit down with Marty Stevens-Heebner, a bestselling author, nationally recognized later life expert, and CEO of Clear Home Solutions, to tackle one of life’s trickiest transitions: moving your parents. Drawing from her own experience as the “designated adult” in her family, Marty opens up about helping her aging father, the emotional hurdles so many of us face, and why even the most organized families can find this process incredibly challenging. She brings heartfelt wisdom and practical tips—covering everything from “right-sizing” your life and handling sentimental clutter, to navigating family disagreements and recognizing when clutter might actually be hoarding. Together, we break down actionable ways to organize, declutter, and have those essential conversations with loved ones about planning for the next chapter. You’ll hear expert advice on making these big transitions more manageable, while preserving relationships and your own peace of mind. Moments 00:00 Designated Adult: Managing Later Life 05:13 "Right-Sizing Your Life" 06:51 Unlocking Emotional Support for Clients 10:35 Rethinking Decluttering Methods 15:48 "Accountability Partner for Productivity" 19:31 Hoarding Scale Explained 22:03 Building Trust with a Hoarder 24:56 "Clutter Hazards Uncovered" 27:51 Discussing Future Care Preferences 30:21 Discussing Vulnerability and Future Care 35:22 "Managing Sandwich Generation Responsibilities" 37:21 Moving and Downsizing Services Guide Age Wise Alliance National Association of Senior and Specialty Move Managers Here are my top three takeaways: Start conversations early & often: Don’t save “the talk” for a crisis moment. Building trust means having a series of honest, respectful conversations with your parents about their wishes—acknowledging their autonomy and learning what’s truly important to them.Downsize in do-able steps: Don’t let clutter (or “your stuff”) take charge. Break down the process—tackle one drawer or closet at a time, schedule short decluttering sessions, and keep it manageable. Celebrate the small wins and remember that progress, not perfection, is the goal.Ask for (and accept) help: Whether it’s from siblings, professionals, or specialized moving managers, you don’t have to go through this alone. Enlist support so you have the emotional bandwidth to care and be present for your loved ones. The Impact of Area Offices on Aging in NW Ohio
2025/07/16
The Impact of Home Ownership on Longevity: "having too much of a concentration of rental in one neighborhood maybe is not helpful for longevity and the like." - Justin MoorI have the pleasure of sitting down with Justin Moor, the President and CEO of the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio. Justin and his organization serve ten counties in our region, with a mission to help those who are 60 and better, not just older, live healthier, fuller, and longer lives. Together, Justin and I talk about the many services his agency offers, from case management and home repairs to meals, transportation, and vital caregiver support. We talk about how every community is unique, discuss the realities and challenges around Medicaid and long-term care, and explore the incredible value older adults continue to bring to our society. Justin also shares some eye-opening stories about how basic resources, safe housing, and social connection can impact longevity, and why advocacy at every level can make such an important difference. Whether you’re an older adult yourself, a family caregiver, or just someone passionate about creating better communities for aging in place, you’ll find practical advice and encouragement here. Here are my top 3 takeaways from this episode: "60 or Better" Mindset: Words matter! Justin stressed the importance of using inclusive language (“60 or better” vs. “60 or older”) to help break down barriers of ageism and make reaching out for support less intimidating.Aging in Place & Community-Centric Support: Today's seniors overwhelmingly want to age at home. The Area Office on Aging and its national counterparts focus on direct and contracted services—case management, meals, transportation, home modification, and more—to ensure this is possible, regardless of income.Caregivers Need Care Too: Behind every thriving older adult is often a selfless, unpaid family caregiver. Support programs for these family heroes are vital, and sometimes the “responsible family member” needs to hear that it’s okay to ask for help!
