Pope Leo diagnosed with lung cancer following surgery
2026/10/14
Pope Leo XIV is recovering after surgery for lung cancer, a diagnosis that came as a shock given his healthy lifestyle and lack of obvious risk factors. His illness underscores a difficult reality also seen in hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters: suffering can reach anyone. Scripture affirms both God’s sovereignty and his love, but it does not give us license to assume every tragedy is a direct act of judgment. So how should Christians respond when suffering strikes without an obvious explanation?

Does God cause hurricanes and earthquakes?
2026/10/13
Hurricanes, powerful waves, and earthquakes have left communities across the Gulf Coast, California, Mexico, and Panama facing destruction and recovery. Unlike tragedies caused directly by human choices, natural disasters raise harder theological questions: Does God cause what nature does? Does he sometimes use disasters as judgment? And how can we tell the difference between divine intervention and the ordinary operation of the natural world? Scripture offers a framework for understanding both God’s sovereignty and the consistent laws he built into creation.

Hurricane Isaias and the path to transformative truth
2026/10/12
Hurricane Isaias made landfall Friday night as a dangerous Category 2 storm, striking near Destin, Florida. Officials were “urging coastal residents from Mississippi to the Florida Panhandle to take the season’s first Atlantic hurricane seriously.” Why would anyone need someone to encourage them to take one of nature’s most destructive phenomena “seriously”? In a culture where you have your truth and I have mine, it’s easier than ever to equate opinion with reality to justify doing what we want to do.

Good news in Canada as mental illness excluded from MAID
2026/10/09
Canada has stepped back from expanding medical assistance in dying to people whose sole underlying condition is mental illness, after officials concluded that suicidal intent cannot reliably be distinguished from a request for MAID. Yet proposed legislation could simultaneously broaden access through advance requests for people with conditions such as dementia. The debate exposes a deeper question about suffering and hope: when circumstances may not improve, what gives a person reason to keep living? Christians have been entrusted with a hope that does not depend on present circumstances—and an opportunity to share it.

NFL quarterback isn’t sure America landed on the Moon
2026/10/08
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye made headlines after admitting he’s skeptical that Americans landed on the moon, reviving a conspiracy theory that persists despite decades of evidence. His comments illustrate how even substantial evidence may not persuade someone determined to doubt. The same challenge surrounds Christianity’s central claim: that Jesus truly died and rose from the dead. Historical arguments can answer many objections, but ultimately the resurrection confronts us with a more personal question—if we believe it happened, how should that truth change the way we live?

Plague in Russia and the third anniversary of October 7
2026/10/07
Concerns about pneumonic plague are drawing international attention after a researcher at a Siberian lab died from an unexplained illness, though health officials currently say the broader public risk appears low. Meanwhile, the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack offers another sobering reminder that the actions of a few can bring consequences for countless others. Both stories point toward a deeper reality about our fallen world: human choices matter. For Christians, the question is whether we will rely on our own will or surrender it to the God who gives us power to choose what matters most.

Prominent televangelist Jim Bakker dies at 86
2026/10/06
Televangelist Jim Bakker died Monday at age eighty-six, leaving behind a complicated legacy of influential Christian broadcasting, scandal, prison, and a return to ministry. His story raises a broader question about how we view and treat other people: as individuals to love or as means to our own ends. Living with sacrificial integrity requires more than knowing what is right—it requires a transformation that enables us to put others before ourselves even when doing so comes at a cost.

“Encore Years” and the path to our highest purpose
2026/10/05
Over the weekend, I read an article that I found deeply significant. In it, cultural commentator David Brooks focuses on finding meaning in older life, though I found his reflections relevant to all of us at any age. God often uses people in what Brooks calls their “Encore Years” to change history. And living with that end in mind is the best way to fulfill Christ’s calling for your life today as well.

Are you “doomscrolling” or “bloomscrolling”?
2026/10/02
Doomscrolling can take a measurable toll on our minds and bodies, prompting some therapists to recommend “bloomscrolling”—intentionally seeking out encouraging news instead. One hopeful story comes from global Christianity, which continues to grow and shift dramatically toward Africa and Asia. As believers around the world become an increasingly diverse body of Christ, their faith offers more than a welcome counterweight to discouraging headlines. It also raises a practical question: How can we join what God is doing through faithful choices in our own lives today?

Attempted hijacking called a “jihadist terror attack”
2026/10/01
A co-pilot allegedly tried to crash a flight carrying more than 170 passengers to Israel before the captain, passengers, and other pilots intervened. The incident illustrates a sobering truth: ideas have consequences, and bad ideas can have victims. That principle is increasingly relevant as AI developers turn to religious leaders for help shaping the moral behavior of advanced systems. But if society no longer agrees on an objective standard of morality, whose definition of “good” should guide AI—or us?

AI “doomers” might buy remote islands or desert bunkers
2026/09/30
President Trump launched America.gov, an AI-powered portal for federal services, as government and technology leaders continue debating how to manage increasingly powerful AI systems. Meanwhile, OpenAI scrapped the release of a new model after safety concerns surfaced during testing. Whether AI poses an existential threat or simply adds another layer of uncertainty to everyday life, the future can leave us searching for direction. But before deciding which path to take, there’s a more fundamental question: Who determines where we’re going?

The cost of choosing convenience over community
2026/09/29
A new book argues that modern convenience may be costing us community, encouraging us to choose the “friction” of interacting with others even when easier options exist. But convenience tests more than our relationships—it can also expose the gap between what we say we believe and what we are willing to sacrifice to live accordingly. Whether the issue is morality, evangelism, or private temptation, conviction becomes harder when obedience carries a personal cost. So where do Christians find the strength to practice what we profess?

Jesus named “influencer of the year” in Sweden
2026/09/28
Signs of Christian revival are emerging in some unexpected places, from young people in secular Sweden and rising adult baptisms in France to Princeton students reasoning their way from atheism to faith. At the same time, America is becoming increasingly diverse politically, culturally, and ethnically, raising an old question with new urgency: What can truly unite so many different people? For Christians, the answer begins not with erasing those differences but with centering our lives on the same King.

Three-quarters of Americans are not conservative or liberal
2026/09/25
A new study suggests most American voters don’t fit neatly into conservative or liberal political labels, instead holding a mix of beliefs across the ideological spectrum. That complexity offers a lesson that extends well beyond politics. Whether discussing theology, culture, or everyday disagreements, certainty can tempt us to oversimplify difficult questions and dismiss those who see them differently. For Christians, embracing humility and genuinely listening to others can strengthen both our understanding of truth and our ability to share it well.
