Description

Zane Hodges Library features messages on the Bible by Zane C. Hodges. Zane ministered at Dallas Theological Seminary for 27 years as Professor of New Testament. Zane also ministered at Victor Street Bible Chapel in Dallas, Texas for over 50 years and published a number of books focusing on the free gift of eternal life by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone and on the opportunities for eternal rewards for believers. Zane was involved with the founding of the Grace Evangelical Society, served on its board of directors, and wrote and spoke for GES. Zane was known for his faithfulness to the text of the Bible through study and prayer. His life reflected a biblical joyful living faith, as he was a friend and minister to many from all walks of life and all ages. Zane desired for others to know and believe in Jesus for the absolutely free gift of eternal life. As Jesus said, "Amen, amen, I tell you, whoever believes in Me has eternal life." (John 6:47) Zane also desired for believers to grow and endure in their faith, so that believers may have the privilege of co-reigning with the Lord Jesus Christ. In 2 Timothy 2:17, believers are told, "If we suffer, we shall also reign with him."

Who Am I? Who Is He? - Luke 8:19-25 - Zane C. Hodges
2026/10/05
Luke 8:19-25  Who Am I? Who Is He? Zane C. Hodges (1989) A very real spiritual identity crisis often lies at the root of the frustrations and failures that we experience in Christian living. Sometimes under the pressures of life, we forget who Jesus is and what He is like. We forget the greatness of His power, the sufficiency of His strength, the abundance of His mercy and the plenitude of His grace, and Jesus becomes like a stranger. Jesus Christ has everything we could possibly need or want and yet He is always right there right besides us. The shortest way to the end of our frustrations, difficulties and perplexities, is the companionship and friendship and the presence and power of Jesus Christ, the Almighty Son of God. The Lord Jesus Christ gives Himself to us first as our Savior when we trust Him for that, and then as we learn to obey Him, as our Brother, our Companion and our Friend.
Assurance is of the Essence of Saving Faith
2026/09/28
In this message given at the 1997 Grace Evangelical Society National Conference, Zane C. Hodges explores the following questions and topics: What is the difference between saving faith and assurance? Why is the nature of the gospel message, such that when a person believes the biblical gospel, he necessarily has the assurance of eternal salvation? If a person is not assured of his eternal salvation, then that person is not believing the gospel message of eternal life. Believing something false never saved anybody, although believing a falsehood may give false assurance. What is saving faith? Is it a persuasion or a decision? Most false professions are made when the decision/process precedes the persuasion. What does it mean to believe that Jesus is the Christ? It means that Jesus is the guarantor of resurrection and eternal life to everyone who believes in Him. At the moment of saving faith, the believer is sure that he is eternally saved. Palestinian Jews at the Time of Jesus - Why Did They Need to be Baptized to Receive Forgiveness?

Palestinian Jews at the Time of Jesus - Why Did They Need to be Baptized to Receive Forgiveness? Salvation and Baptism Part 3 - Zane C. Hodges Part 3 of the Baptism and Salvation series on Acts 2:32–47, exploring how, in this third of four messages on Baptism and Salvation in the Book of Acts, Zane looks at the experience of Jews in the land of Israel on the day of Pentecost. Why did God require that this group of Jews who were directly responsible for the crucifixion for the Lord Jesus Christ, be baptized first before they received the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit? Why is the forgiveness of sins different than eternal life?  www.ZaneHodges.org #baptism #baptize #churchofchrist #acts238
Conversion of Saul - Baptism and Salvation, Part 2 (Acts 9, 22 and 26)
2026/09/07
By looking at the conversion experience of Saul on the road to Damascus, Zane Hodges demonstrates that the Apostle Paul did not receive the three great blessings of salvation at the same time. Saul received the gift of everlasting life at his initial moment of belief in Jesus as the Christ, the guarantor of eternal life to all who believe in Him. Saul did not receive the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit until 3 days after water baptism. The experience of Saul illustrates how the blessings of everlasting life, the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit are distinct blessings. Hodges (1975) #freegrace #baptize #cornelius #baptized Acts 10:1-6, 30-48; 11:1-18 By looking at the example of Cornelius in Acts 10, Zane Hodges explains the three distinct benefits that a person receives when they believe in Jesus for eternal life? How is everlasting life different from forgiveness and different from the baptism of the Holy Spirit? What does eternal life do for us? What does forgiveness do for us? What does baptism of the Holy Spirit do for us? Did Cornelius need to undergo water baptism in order to be saved? 1 Corinthians 12:13 John 5:24 John 7:39 www.ZaneHodges.org
Does the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats Teach Salvation by Works? -Matthew 25:31-46
2026/08/24
Matthew 25:31-46 Judgment of the Sheep and the Goats (1975) Zane C. Hodges Are the sheep in this parable saved because of the works? Are the goats destined for hell, because of their lack of good works? Is "inheriting a kingdom" the same as "entering a kingdom"? What time period does this parable refer to, the rapture or the end of the tribulation? In this motivating message Zane Hodges answers these questions and how this parable can apply to our lives. Matthew 25:31-46 31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: 32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: 33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. What Happens to Christians in the Outer Darkness? - Matt 25:14-30 - Parable of the Talents - Zane Hodges
2026/08/17
Matthew 25:14-30 Parable of the Talents (1975) Zane C. Hodges Our Lord has committed to each Christian, responsibility in line with the capacity that He knows that each Christian's possesses and in accordance with His knowledge of what each Christian is able to do for Him by His grace. There is a day of reckoning for every Christian, not to determine our eternal destiny, but to evaluate the kind of life and service that each Christian has lived here on earth. Faithful Christians may be commended, promoted and invited to share in their Lord's joy in the kingdom to come. Unfaithful Christians are figuratively relegated to the outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. Other passage mentioned include 2 Corinthians 5:10. #outerdarkness #parableofthetalents
Matthew 25:1-13 - Parable of the Wise and the Foolish Virgins
2026/08/10
Matthew 25:1-13 Parable of the Ten (Wise and the Foolish Virgins) (September 10, 1975) Zane C. Hodges In this parable of the five wise virgins and the five foolish virgins, Zane Hodges explains what period of time does this parable apply to, the Tribulation period or the present day. Although the parable applies to the saints of the Tribulation period, Zane demonstrates how those lessons are applicable to us in the church age today, and how we need to be watchful and have reserves of spiritual oil as we await the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to rapture us believers in Jesus Christ for the free gift of everlasting life to be with Him forever. How do we have a spiritual reserve? Other passages discussed include: Revelation 14:1-5 Matthew 24:6-8, 12-13, 15-22 Proverbs 24:10 #tribulation #endtimes #rapture
Matthew 24:45-51 - What Happens If I Am an Unfaithful Servant of Jesus?
2026/08/03
Matthew 24:45-51 Parable of the Unfaithful Servant (1975) Zane C. Hodges Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord has made ruler over his house? There is no greater incentive to faithful living then the realization that our Lord Jesus Christ may come back at any time. When that realization is lost, very much else may be lost also. What is the outer darkness in this parable? Can Christians experience weeping and gnashing of teeth for lives of unfaithfulness to Jesus Christ? www.ZaneHodges.org #eternalrewards #discipleship #disciple #outerdarkness
Isaiah 40:1-5 and Luke 3:1-6,10-14 - Preparation for Comfort
2026/07/27
Preparation for Comfort Zane C. Hodges (1980) Isaiah 40:1-5 and Luke 3:1-6, 10-14 "Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God." What do you really know about the comfort of God? Do you understand God's comfort in your own life and are you able to share it with other people? Our hearts and lives are not ready for the blessings with which God desires to comfort us until we know something about comforting other people in their need. When God's people pursue equity, honesty and kindness, then God's glory can be seen in the midst of His people and other men will also see it there. Sometimes we make the mistake of thinking that God is looking for geniuses, orators or superstars, but what God is really looking for are people who have a genuine concern for the needs of other people, who are scrupulously honest, and who really know something about the art of kindness and consideration and gentleness towards all. When God finds an individual like that, He can build the kind of life which can be filled with the blessings and mercies of God, which are the only true comfort of the human heart. God is always eager to comfort His people if we are prepared to receive it. Other passages mentioned include: 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, James 1:27, 1 John 3:17, Ephesians 4:32, Matthew 5:7, Philippians 4:5 and John 13:35.
Luke 16:19-31 - Pleasure Has an Exit Door Marked Death -
2026/07/20
Luke 16:19-31 Pleasure Has an Exit Door Marked Death Zane C. Hodges (1993) What is the most potent, the most addictive, the most intoxicating, and the most dangerous drug known to man? Pleasure. The purpose of the story of the rich man and Lazarus is not to explain why Lazarus and the rich man are where they are, but to show that these two men have traded places. Those who never believe in Jesus Christ for the free gift of eternal life will one day find that their days of pleasure will come to an end. The Word of God is more valuable than a whole lifetime filled with pleasure. The only really stable and solid thing in this world is the Word of God. Other passages: 2 Cor 5:8; Ephesians 2:8-9; Luke 24:13, 25-27.

What Do We Mean by Propitiation? Does It Only Count if We Accept It? - Zane Hodges
2026/04/07
Zane Hodges answers the following questions: Do unbelievers go to hell to pay for their sins? Why do people go to hell if Jesus paid for the sins of the world? Did Jesus die on the cross for all? What does it mean that Jesus is the propitiation for the whole world? What did Jesus' death on the cross accomplish for everyone, both believers and unbelievers? Does anyone get sent to hell as punishment for their sins? Why do unbelievers go to the lake of fire?
