Episode 116: Fighting for Joy When Life Feels Too Heavy
2026/10/24
Does life feel heavy?
Are you weary?
Are there too many burdens weighing you down?
Do you feel like you are carrying more than you can handle?
We all have hard things in life.
Burdens that feel massive and overwhelming - and rob us of joy.
But it's helpful to remember that the fight for joy isn't about learning to carry these burdens better. It's about finally admitting that they're too heavy for us to carry on our own. I Peter 5:7 says, "Cast all your anxieties on God, because he cares for you."
On this episode I share some practical ways to experience more joy by leaning into our dependence and giving our burdens to God - the One who IS strong enough to carry them. The One who promises to sustain us and guard us with His peace. The One who tenderly says, "Come to me for rest!" What a beautiful invitation, and such a freeing and peaceful way to fight for joy!
Life may still be hard and your painful things will probably still be there, but there will be joy in the release of no longer living like the weight of the world needs to be on your shoulders!
Episode 115: A Family's Fight for Joy
2026/10/07
Today I get to introduce you to Katie Bamberg and give you a glimpse into her brave fight for joy as she has faced her husband Pete's terminal brain cancer diagnosis. When a diagnosis like this comes, it doesn’t just affect the person who receives the horrible news…it affects the whole family. And that is certainly the case for this special family.
Listen in as Katie shares a little bit about how they have learned to fight for joy as a family in the midst of Pete fighting for his life. How they have leaned into community for support and help, and have learned to keep fully living, even in a constant state of anticipatory grief with his scans, and even when Pete faced a second diagnosis of colon cancer.
Even if you are walking through something completely different, I think you’ll be encouraged by what Katie has to share about finding joy as a support person for her amazing husband, but also as a family unit during difficult times. And, with each miraculous year that God gives Pete, leaning into hope - and finding things to be grateful for.
Episode 114: Experiencing Joy Through Forgiveness
2026/09/22
In Pastor Tim Keller’s book, "Forgive: Why Should I and How Can I?", he says: “Forgiveness won’t necessarily come naturally for us, but instead, our hearts will want to concentrate only on how bad the wrongdoer is and how much he deserves to suffer…some think that by remaining angry they are giving the wrongdoers what they really deserve. But in reality you are enabling their actions to continue to hurt you. Instead, bit by bit by bit, work towards forgiveness by taking in what Jesus has done. Put your story about what people have done to you into the big story of what He did for you, and you’ll have all the power you need to grant forgiveness.”
On today's episode, my husband Eric and I talk through some of the main elements of forgiveness. Unforgiveness is one of the biggest "joy stealers", while living a lifestyle of forgiveness is one of the key ways to fight for joy! This has been a frequent topic over the past 8 seasons and I am committed to keep touching on it as I know that so many people aren't living in the freedom and joy that it can bring. It's certainly not easy...but its worth the work.

Episode 113: Fighting for Joy with Hope
2026/09/08
Season 9 is here! I'm so grateful to bring you a new episode today and I look forward to another season of fighting for joy together.
"May the God of HOPE fill you with all JOY and PEACE in believing so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in HOPE.”
Life in this broken world is hard, but there is JOY and HOPE to be found!
Episode 112: Simple Ways to Fight for Joy
2026/06/12
For a while now I’ve wanted to record a quick episode talking about some of the simplest ways to fight for joy. Over the past 8 seasons of this podcast, I’ve shared hundreds of tools that can help in the fight for joy…things that we can implement into our lives that help us fight against the “joy stealers” that life in this broken world can bring, because no matter what we’re going through, there ARE practical, and powerful ways to move towards joy! To fight for it…and find it!
But sometimes we can overthink it and we can overlook some of the most simple tools. Obviously there are times when counseling is the best path. Or times when you’ll need medication…or times when you need to make significant changes in regards to your schedule, your lifestyle, your relationships, your weekly routine. But today I wanted to suggest a few simple ways to make some significant progress towards joy that are fairly easy to implement. Almost all of the things I’m going to mention today are free and they are things that can help almost anyone, whether you’re in the midst of grief…or just in a funk. Whether your life is falling apart or you’re just a little more anxious than normal. We’re all going to have times when we just feel “off”. When we are lacking joy. And when we need a little extra encouragement to fight for joy.
So, IF you’re lacking joy and want some practical help and simple ideas of ways to fight for joy, I hope this episode helps and encourages you! Or that you’ll remember to come back to this episode when you DO need it. Or, that you can even pass it along and share it with someone you know who is struggling.

Episode 109: Fighting for Joy Through the Sudden Loss of Both Parents
2026/03/21
My guest today is Emily Lanphier. When she was just 28, and pregnant with her third child, she woke up in the middle of the night to a police officer knocking at her door. He was there to tell her that her parents had died together in a car accident. Those of you who are local may remember this horrific story as many of us knew and admired her parents, Ty and Terri Schenzel.
Over the last 10+ years, Emily has leaned into her grief AND leaned into joy!
As you listen to her story of growing in gratitude and faith, even in extremely difficult circumstances, I think you'll be encouraged in your own fight for joy!

Episode 104: Marriage Q & A
2025/12/15
I have another encore episode for you today and I recorded a brand new intro, sharing some of my current thoughts as I relistened to our conversation. This Q & A was the 3rd part of a 3-part series that Eric and I did together in 2021. I decided to use Part 3 (which was episode 39) as the encore episode because its a great summary of what we covered as a whole on this topic. So as you listen today, you’ll hear us talk about things like conflict, communication, friendship in marriage, principle vs. preference, how we change as individuals over decades of marriage, and how grief has affected our relationship.
One of the biggest take aways that I heard as I re-listened, is that while there IS so much joy to be found in marriage and family, our joy can’t be rooted and ultimately dependent on it. Our deepest satisfaction, hope, and joy needs to be grounded in something bigger. In someONE bigger - in God and in our relationship with Him...this is the key to a lasting, thriving, godly marriage!
I’m excited for you to relisten (or maybe listen for the first time!) and I hope there is something in our conversation that brings you encouragement today and helps your own fight for joy in marriage!

Episode 103: The Joy Report: November
2025/11/18
Well, surprise! I wasn't planning to release an episode with ALL new content until after the holidays, but last week I had an idea to start a monthly "Joy Report"...sharing some of the things that are bringing me joy right now! I share some pretty heavy stories on this podcast so I thought it would be fun to add a shorter, lighter episode once a month. Today, on my first "Joy Report", you'll hear me share a list of 5 things that are bringing me joy here in November!

Episode 102: Facing the Untimely Death of your Mom (Encore Episode with Cathy Brown)
2025/11/03
On this encore episode with my dear friend of 36 years, Cathy Brown, you’ll get a glimpse into the difficulty of losing your mom too soon. Shortly after graduating from college, Cathy was at work waitressing when she got the awful news that her mom had died while traveling home from Paris.
Cathy was my very first guest on the podcast and I’ve pointed quite a few people to this episode over the years as they’ve shared their own stories of losing their moms too soon. I’ve heard over and over how helpful Cathy’s insight and encouragement is around fighting for joy not just in this particular kind of grief, but grief in general. Cathy shares good insight about the "both/and" of healing and grieving - how healing doesn’t mean that you won’t still have pain...and how pain doesn't mean you aren't healing. You'll appreciate her encouragement around experiencing healing, progress, and joy, even with a hurting heart. We also spend some time reflecting on how grief changes and affects so many different aspects of your life, including faith and relationships.
Since we recorded this episode 7 years ago, Cathy has become a Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist, trained in EMDR Therapy, and sees clients as a Licensed Professional Counselor (I need to have her on again!). If you are struggling with the aftereffects of losing a loved one, especially if it was an untimely death, I encourage you to listen to Cathy's story of losing her mom and beginning her fight for joy.
