At the centre of this extraordinary story are a group of women from Kfar Aza. They lost homes. They lost loved ones. They lost the security of a life they had known. And yet, somehow, they continued. They continued raising their children. They continued caring for one another. They continued trying to rebuild their lives—and, perhaps most importantly, they continued asking one of the most fundamental questions a human being can ask: Where do we belong? Directed by Israeli filmmaker Dotan Nave, and produced and edited by our guest today, acclaimed Canadian-Israeli filmmaker Igal Hecht, the film follows these women over more than two years. Igal began documenting their lives just three weeks after October 7. He stayed. He watched as the immediate shock and devastation gave way to something much more complicated: the long, painful process of trying to rebuild. Born in Ashkelon, Israel, he moved to Toronto with his family as a child and went on to build an extraordinary career as a Canadian-Israeli filmmaker. As the founder of Chutzpa Productions, he has been involved in more than 50 documentaries and more than 20 television series, tackling subjects ranging from identity and human rights to some of the most difficult chapters of recent history. Following October 7, his work became particularly personal. His documentary The Killing Roads examined the attacks that took place along southern Israel's Route 232 and Highway 34, bringing together survivors, first responders, bereaved families and firsthand footage. There are diplomats who represent their country—and then there are diplomats who try to change the way the world sees their country. Today, I have the extraordinary privilege of speaking with one of Israel’s most distinguished diplomats, communicators and advocates: Ambassador Ido Aharoni Aronoff. For 25 years, Ido served in Israel’s Foreign Ministry, spending much of his diplomatic career in the United States. From 2010 to 2016, he served as Israel’s Consul General in New York—the longest-serving Israeli Consul General in the city and the head of Israel’s largest diplomatic mission in the world. But Ido’s story goes far beyond titles. His family’s connection to Jerusalem reaches back to the 1870s. His great-grandfather, Rabbi Emanuel Aronoff, settled in Jerusalem and helped establish the Bukharan Quarter. His father, Emanuel Aharoni Aronoff, fought with the Haganah during Israel’s War of Independence and was wounded twice. Ido himself served in the IDF as an infantry company commander during the First Lebanon War. And then came diplomacy. In 1993, he participated in the diplomatic process surrounding the Oslo Accords and was part of Israel’s delegation at the White House for the historic signing ceremony. But perhaps what Ido is best known for is something very different. In 2002, he initiated Brand Israel—a groundbreaking effort based on a deceptively simple idea: that Israel could not allow itself to be understood only through war, terrorism and political conflict. Israel, he argued, also needed to tell the world about its creativity, innovation, culture, diversity, compassion and extraordinary contributions to humanity. That idea would become a central part of Ido’s professional life. In 2007, he became Israel’s first head of brand management, bringing the principles of nation branding into Israel’s public diplomacy. Today, that question may be more important than ever. After October 7, Israel has faced extraordinary international scrutiny, fierce criticism and a dramatically intensified battle over how Israel is perceived around the world. At the same time, antisemitism has become an increasingly visible part of public discourse, including on university campuses, social media and in political and cultural institutions. So I wanted to ask Ido something deeper than simply, “How should Israel improve its public relations?” I wanted to ask: How does a country tell its story when the world seems determined to tell that story for it? How do you communicate Israel’s humanity without ignoring its complexity? And how do you ensure that Israel is not defined solely by its enemies? Ido is now a Global Distinguished Professor of Business at Touro University, teaches at Tel Aviv University, advises organizations and international companies, and lectures around the world on diplomacy, geopolitical affairs, strategic communications and nation branding. He also hosts Tel Aviv University’s English-language podcast, TAU Unbound. But today's conversation is not simply about diplomacy. It is about identity. This episode of 'The Avrum Rosensweig Show', features Rabbi Shlomo Schwartz—an Orthodox rabbi, educator, original thinker, and author of a fascinating five-volume sefer (book) called The Last Word on the Parsha. In it, Rabbi Schwartz asks us to look at the Torah from a different direction. While we often focus on the opening words of a parsha (portion), Rabbi Schwartz examines its final words. He suggests that the conclusion may do far more than bring a story to an end. It may reveal the ultimate purpose of the entire parsha—the destination toward which every verse before it has been leading. And this is not simply a collection of interesting Torah insights. Rabbi Schwartz has developed a method of learning. That method was shaped by his Rebbe, Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Weinberg, of blessed memory, who taught that the Torah is extraordinarily precise and logical: every word has a purpose, every placement matters, and every apparent difficulty invites deeper investigation. Rabbi Schwartz has certainly brought that analytical mind to an extraordinary range of experiences. He is a retired Chartered Accountant and CEO of Shomer Israel—Guardian of Israel. He has served as Chief Operating Officer of Christians United for Israel Canada, lectured internationally with Aish HaTorah, and worked as a teacher, controller, computer consultant, financial-systems designer and property manager. Today, he teaches Torah by Zoom four nights a week to a devoted community of Noahides, answers religious questions from a community of converts in Uganda, and has even ventured into the world of invention—appearing on Dragon's Den in 2007. As Rabbi Schwartz puts it: “No deal, but certainly an education.” In this episode we will explore some fascinating questions. a) Why does the Torah end each parsha where it does? b) Can the final words actually unlock the meaning of everything that came before? c) Why does the Torah sometimes seem to end on a puzzling—or even troubling—subject? There are writers who tell stories—and there are writers who use stories to explore the wounds, struggles and hopes of an entire people. Today, I am honoured to welcome Dr. Emmet Hirsch, a physician, medical researcher, former Israeli artillery officer and gifted novelist whose remarkable career has been devoted to healing the human body while exploring the deepest reaches of the human heart. Born in Chicago and raised in a deeply committed Jewish family, Emmet spent his formative years in Jerusalem after his father—a Reform rabbi, civil-rights activist and participant in the historic Selma march—became head of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. Emmet attended high school and university in Israel and later served as an artillery officer in the Israel Defense Forces. Today, he is a practising obstetrician-gynecologist in Evanston, Illinois, and a clinical professor at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine. His research has focused particularly on premature labour, infection and inflammation, and he has authored or contributed to more than 65 scientific publications. But Dr. Hirsch’s search for truth and healing extends far beyond medicine. He is the author of The Education of Doctor Montefiore, a hilarious and poignant novel about the people, institutions, vanities and moments of selflessness that shape a young physician. His newest novel, The Wolf Shall Dwell with the Lamb, is a powerful literary and historical thriller set against the turbulent birth of the State of Israel and the complex relationship between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East. At its centre is Joseph Friedmann, a Jewish child abandoned in a Catholic convent in Lebanon. There, he encounters antisemitism, betrayal and profound trauma. He eventually makes his way to Palestine, fights in Israel’s War of Independence and later returns to Lebanon as an Israeli spy. Yet this is far more than a story of war and espionage. It is the story of one man’s passage from abandonment to belonging, innocence to violence, secrecy to self-confrontation, and trauma toward redemption. It asks what happens when someone must conceal his true identity in order to survive—and what emotional price must be paid for living behind a mask. The novel honours the Jewish longing for safety, homeland and sovereignty while also recognizing the pain, suffering and humanity found on every side of conflict. Inspired.
