A new year is often associated with resolutions, new beginnings, looking back on previous successes and planning out the year ahead. This week we’re shamelessly plugging our new single, Habit. We did a bit of a production deep dive on our last single, Scorpion, and some of you eagled eyed listeners (as it were) realised that we were yet to do one for Habit, so this one is for you. Issa Odyssea released her EP: This Wasn’t In The Script on all platforms and performed it live for a select number of invited guests, in it’s entirety with a Q&A beforehand, in the space that it was created. A brilliantly creative and poignant idea, the likes of which we have come to expect from Issa. We recorded that Q&A and present it for you now, to check out the process and gain insight in to the creativity of an unsigned artists who is using her independent to her advantage. This week we are using a brilliant track as a jumping off point to talk about a wider type of song: the protest song. Or, if you will, political songs as a whole. The aforementioned brilliant track is called Dollar, by I Am Roze, an artist originally from Louisiana. Off their latest EP, Social Commentary, Dollar is an evocative, Soul ballad that is a perfect example of how classic protest song techniques and messages are still, possibly even more, relevant today. Although not a genre, a protest song, is a type of songwriting that spans various styles and can even cross boarders between artists and disciplines.  And, let it be said, Nazi Punks...fuck off. An impromptu week off from the pod has led us back to us nerding out over songs, and this one is another that we use in our songwriting camps. It’s Alex’s turn to bring the track this week and at a time where world politics are very prescient, he’s taking us back to 2015 for World War Free, a protest/political song by Thabo.
