Dave and Michelle ND delve into some of the specifics of this rather well-characterized rasayana, also known as Withania somnifera; a herb of particular interest when neuro-inflammation is suspected.

174: S.E.N.T -- The Link Between the Digestive Tract and Middle Ear Infections
2024/02/08

173: CHRONIC, RECURRING INFECTIONS -- When You Keep Taking Antibiotics But Your Body Really Needs a Different Solution
2024/01/31
If you are experiencing recurring infections that require multiple antibiotic interventions, it should make us give pause to the state of our microbiome. Dr. Michelle ND reminds us of the importance of assessing and treating the terrain -- the "home" of the pathogens, not just the pathogens themselves.

172: STRUCTURE AND SIMPLICITY -- Practical Insights and Clinical Highlights
2024/01/24
Patients are our best teachers.
This week Dr. Michelle and Dr. Dave were inspired to discuss a couple of cases of decreased functional immunity and pancreatic pseudocyst to illustrate the importance of simplicity (whole person health) and structure, respectively.
Dr. Dave highly recommends that anyone dealing with pancreatic disorders (especially if unrelated to excessive smoking and drinking) have an assessment with a clinician who practices visceral manipulation (as taught by the Barral Institute) so as to have a better STRUCTURAL understanding of clinically relevant anatomy that could be contributing to this 'idiopathic' condition.

171: BLOATED HYPE ABOUT SIBO -- Have We Become Hyperfocused on SIBO and Are We Missing Other Key Contributing Factors?
2024/01/17
SIBO is a framework, a perspective, a piece of the puzzle in many cases of gastrointestinal disorders that many proactive and health-savvy patients know quite a bit about. From the integrative clinician's perspective, it sounds very 'science-y', has some clear-cut borders, guidelines etc. for assessment and testing and outcomes, and it sounds (maybe a little overly) simple and clear in these respects.
But is it a case of "much ado about .... SIBO"?

2024/01/09

Jon is a homesteading naturopathic doctor who is on a mission to bring the FOUNDATIONS back to FUNCTIONAL and NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE. Clinically applying individualized critical foundations is more difficult than drinking your bulletproof coffee, but it’s what great naturopaths like Dr. Beatty do almost effortlessly. 169: NPD - YOU'RE SO VAIN: YOU PROBABLY THINK THIS EPISODE IS ABOUT YOU .... But it's All Somebody Else's Fault
2023/12/27
How do you treat people who think there's nothing wrong with them? How do you interact with these often engaging, charismatic people who cannot accept any responsibility or accountability for their actions, while blaming, manipulating, and gaslighting those around them while they try to fill their internal emptiness with an endless 'supply'? Join us as we discuss Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) with a favourite repeat guest, Dr. Talia Marcheggiani ND, RP (Qualifying).

166: BAD BREATH STINKS, LITERALLY: But is it Just a Mouth Issue or Something Deeper?
2023/12/05
Halitosis, or bad breath, can originate from various sources, primarily driven by volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by oral bacteria during the putrefaction of food particles. Mouth breathing exacerbates this issue by reducing saliva flow, allowing bacteria to thrive. While oral causes include poor oral hygiene and gum disease, extraoral factors like diet, systemic diseases, and respiratory conditions contribute to the multifaceted origins of halitosis.

165: WE CAN DO BETTER -- An Unconventional Approach to Using Conventional Labs
2023/11/30
Clinical biochemistry is critical to a comprehensive assessment of your health, and you probably don't need a DUTCH test or a new-fangled functional medicine test.
Dr. Michelle and Dr. Dave discuss the application of 3 fairly 'conventional' lab investigations that can improve the assessment and thus, treatment of the vast majority of patients suffering from long-term chronic conditions, especially those with low energy.
