Episode Description Welcome back to Death, Piles & Taxes with Derek Everitt and Adam Beasley. This week the guys cover everything from tax planning and business growth to questionable potluck food and employees who forget they took the day off. Derek explains why the post-tax-season planning period is one of the most valuable times of the year for business owners and why making good decisions before the fact is almost always better than cleaning up mistakes afterward. The conversation dives into business growth, staffing challenges, AI, and why human intelligence still has a place in an increasingly automated world. Along the way, Adam shares stories from the workforce, including temporary employees, PTO mishaps, company Lagoon Day adventures, and the reality that your greatest business asset can sometimes become your biggest liability. The episode wraps with a discussion about workplace culture, company potlucks, finding joy in everyday life, and why some people know how to celebrate better than the rest of us. As always, there are two things in life you can count on: Death and Taxes. Show Notes In This Episode Why tax planning beats tax preparation The value of proactive business advice AI vs. human intelligence in accounting Growing from a small business into a larger operation Hiring challenges and employee development The pros and cons of temporary workers The employee who forgot he scheduled PTO Why people are often your biggest asset—and biggest liability Company culture and workforce management Potluck food horror stories Workplace celebrations and cultural differences Lagoon Day and the hunt for extra tickets Finding joy in everyday life Lottery winnings, taxes, and perspective Why winning is still winning, even after taxes Memorable Moments A phone call from a dead mother The employee who showed up on his day off Potluck dishes that may or may not have seen refrigeration The unofficial Lagoon ticket marketplace Why accountants secretly love planning season The dangers of workplace cynicism Finding happiness in the little things Key Takeaways Planning is almost always better than reacting.
