European Vacation Recap
2026/10/02
Episode 192 of the Award Travel 101 podcast features Angie Sparks sharing highlights from her recent 18-day European adventure through Istanbul, Switzerland, and Lake Como. The episode covers current points-and-miles news, including an elevated Southwest business card offer that can help build toward Companion Pass, Citi’s move to lifetime language on some Strata cards, and Bilt adding Amtrak as its 25th transfer partner. Angie and Cameron also discuss their current credit-card spending goals, status pursuits, and upcoming travel plans.
The main topic is Angie’s bucket-list trip, where she used points and miles to book premium flights and a wide range of hotels that would have cost more than $25,000 in cash. They discuss her flights on Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, and American Airlines, along with stays in Istanbul, Lucerne, Wengen, Zermatt, St. Moritz, and Lake Como. The trip included scenic train rides, mountain excursions, cycling, waterfalls, and visits to attractions including Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat. Angie also shares lessons on lounges, travel credits, flight changes, and packing lighter, while Cameron offers additional suggestions for the Swiss Alps.

Citi to Japan Airlines Transfer Bonus Sweet Spots
2026/09/25
Episode 191 covers several timely points-and-miles updates, along with practical travel tips and trip-planning updates from Cameron and Mike. The hosts discuss strategies for staying healthy while flying, including wiping down seats, using hand sanitizer and masks, staying hydrated with electrolytes, and taking vitamins or supplements. In the news, they cover upcoming changes to the Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card, Qatar Airways easing restrictions on its friends-and-family booking lists, and new Chase Freedom Flex/ Freedom quarterly bonus categories. They also discuss Citi's 25% transfer bonus to Avianca LifeMiles, recent bonuses they received, and their upcoming travel plans, including Japan, Canada, Norway, and future SEC football trips.
The main topic focuses on Citi adding Japan Airlines (JAL) as a 1:1 transfer partner and the current 30% transfer bonus, which can significantly reduce the number of Citi ThankYou points needed for a variety of awards. The hosts break down JAL sweet spots, including JAL business and first class to Japan, domestic Japanese flights, Air France/KLM and British Airways flights to Europe, LATAM flights to South America, Bangkok Airways flights around Southeast Asia, and Emirates business class. Examples include JAL business class to Japan for as little as 43,000 Citi points with the bonus and LATAM flights from the U.S. to Santiago for about 47,000 Citi points. They also discuss important restrictions, including JAL's seven-day account-age requirement, the ability to book only for eligible relatives or spouses, and JAL miles' 36-month hard expiration. The episode closes with a tip about using AI to create an engaging way to present an upcoming family trip.

Travel Tips From a Nomad
2026/09/18
Episode 190 features Erin Kilpatrick sharing how she has built a fully nomadic lifestyle around points, miles, and travel. After selling her home, car, and belongings and moving to Ecuador in 2023, Erin has spent the past several years living one to three months at a time in different countries. Award travel is a major part of making that lifestyle possible, covering roughly 80% of her flights and 30% of her lodging, while she also maximizes credit-card offers, shopping portals, credits, and other opportunities. The episode also covers current points-and-miles news, including changes to the Chase Aeroplan card, Hyatt ending its American Airlines partnership and adding Delta, and elevated Hilton card welcome offers with free-night certificates.
A major focus is Erin’s strategy for buying hotel points. She emphasizes that this is not a beginner strategy and should only be used when the math clearly works for a specific redemption. Using a Melbourne Choice Hotels stay as an example, she bought points at 0.57 cents each, reducing a $165 cash rate to about $85.50 in points. She also discusses buying points during unusually low-priced sales, while acknowledging the risks of devaluations and poor redemption values. Erin highlights several under-the-radar destinations she enjoyed, including Penrith in England, Alicante in Spain, and Sofia, Bulgaria.
The episode also takes a nuanced look at AI in travel planning. Erin avoids using AI for tasks where established tools are more reliable, such as award searches, points tracking, exact transportation schedules, and precise directions. Instead, she sees AI as a brainstorming partner for building itineraries, researching neighborhoods and transportation options, troubleshooting, and visualizing complicated travel plans. The episode wraps up with advice on renting a car in Ireland, emphasizing the importance of reading rental and credit-card insurance policies carefully, confirming coverage, and obtaining the proper documentation before arriving at the rental counter.

Meet the Mods- Bridgette
2026/09/11
Episode 189 features Cameron Laufer and moderator Bridgette Birk discussing the changing value of points and miles, along with the latest news in the loyalty space. The highlight post asks what travelers are using Avios for now that AA award rates have increased significantly since 2021. Members shared several strong uses, including Qatar Qsuites, JAL business class through British Airways, Iberia business class, Qatar for AA domestic flights, Finnair for longer routes, and LATAM in South America. The news segment covered the Bask Bank American Airlines bonus, Southwest’s plans for 11 new lounges, a 30% Capital One transfer bonus to Japan Airlines, and a 30% Amex-to-Hilton transfer bonus.
The episode also includes personal updates from both hosts. Bridgette is working on her Bank of America Atmos Ascent spending and reassessing her card strategy after being denied for two business cards. Cameron discussed whether adding a player 3 as a Bilt Palladium authorized user was worth the extra effort, ultimately deciding the additional earnings weren't compelling enough, while also considering an Alaska Airlines business card. Trip plans included Bridgette’s upcoming Southeast Asia trip, Puerto Rico, and a trip to see Jeff Goldblum, while Cameron discussed planning a Norway trip featuring Bergen and the Lofoten Islands and the challenges of getting there on points.
The main topic, “Meet the Mods,” focuses on Bridgette’s journey into travel rewards. After starting with a Southwest card in 2017, she discovered Award Travel 101 and began dedicating significant time to learning from the community. Her standout experiences include Aer Lingus business class, ANA The Room, Andaz Tokyo, The Beekman in New York, Emirates First Class on the A380, and safari flights booked with points. She favors Hyatt, transferable currencies, luxury when possible, and has developed particular strengths in solo travel, hotels, and navigating different cards, banks, and airline programs. The episode wraps with Cameron’s reminder not to overlook cash fares—especially when an award ticket carries high taxes and fees—as sometimes a cash ticket can provide the better value.

Where to Go With 100K Capital One Miles
2026/09/04
Episode 188 focuses on creative ways to maximize 100,000 Capital One miles, along with several noteworthy points-and-miles updates. The episode’s highlight was member Courtney’s impressive ChatGPT-built, mobile-friendly travel dashboard that tracks more than 1.5 million points and miles, credit cards, annual fees, statement credits, free-night certificates, elite statuses, 5/24 status, redemptions, upcoming applications, trips, and important deadlines. In the news, Citi launched a 125,000-mile welcome offer on the refreshed AAdvantage Executive card, while United and American announced a slate of new European routes for next summer, including destinations such as Lisbon, Porto, Reykjavik, Vienna, Valencia, Sardinia, Sicily, and the Azores. American Express also rolled out elevated Delta SkyMiles card offers, with bonuses reaching 200,000 miles, and IHG introduced a targeted discount on the cash portion of Points & Cash bookings.
The main discussion explores how two people can stretch 100K Capital One miles plus roughly $1,000 in cash into trips of at least two or three nights. Angie highlights options such as Lisbon, where 48K miles can cover round-trip flights for two, while Wyndham or Capital One Travel can cover the hotel; Medellin, where 80K miles covers flights and an inexpensive hotel can be partially erased with the remaining miles; and San Juan, where 66K miles handles the flights and the remaining miles help offset a Marriott hotel booked through the Capital One portal. Cameron offers additional examples, including a Miami Beach getaway for about 95K miles, a three-night Hawaii trip for 100K miles plus $230, and a Cancun all-inclusive that can be done for around 105K miles and $400. The episode also emphasizes Capital One’s ability to erase travel purchases at a fixed rate, which can be especially useful for expenses like trains and tours, although transferring to airline and hotel partners can often provide greater value.
The episode wraps up with the hosts’ personal bonus and trip updates, including Cameron’s upcoming Morocco trip, Southwest meetup flights, and strategies for maximizing Bilt benefits, while Angie prepares for a major Europe trip and looks ahead to Australia. The Tip of the Week is a useful airline-booking tidbit: Air Canada and Singapore Airlines use the same PNR, which can be helpful when managing reservations across the two programs.

Milwaukee Meetup Recap
2026/08/28
Episode 187 recaps the recent Award Travel 101 meetup in Milwaukee, along with several important developments in the points and miles world. The highlight post featured a memorable booking mistake from a member who accidentally reserved two Hilton rooms for five nights each in the wrong city—and even the wrong country—because the hotel was named “Hilton Kuala…” despite actually being located in Ho Chi Minh City. The hosts also covered a 25% Citi ThankYou transfer bonus to Leading Hotels of the World Leaders Club, upcoming Uber One changes that reduce ride rewards from 6% to 5% while adding benefits for families and international travelers, continued Priority Pass devaluations, and Flying Blue’s new Light, Standard, and Flex award fare structure beginning September 8.
The hosts also discussed their latest credit card activity and upcoming travel. Angie picked up an Amex Business Gold with a 200K welcome offer and finally got the Marriott Brilliant, while Laura added Atmos and American Airlines business cards. Laura finished booking her Costa Rica trip using points for hotels and United business-class flights, while Angie was preparing for a major Istanbul, Switzerland, and Lake Como trip. The bulk of the episode, though, focused on the Milwaukee meetup, which featured presentations from Max Craig on using AI for travel planning and earning points, Patrick Sugarman on travel insurance, Eric Holly on using Rove miles for Air India and cheaper United flights, and Chris Moss promoting the upcoming Chicago Seminars and hosting a huge suite party.
Beyond the official sessions, the meetup included a Friday reception, a happy hour at Milwaukee Public Market, a massive suite party, cheese and wine tasting, a Pabst tour, volleyball, plenty of cheese curds, and lots of time hanging out at local spots. Despite numerous flight delays and cancellations affecting attendees, the weekend was filled with lively conversations, useful tips, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow members. The episode ends with a simple but fitting tip of the week: Go to meetups!

Japan: First Class to Egg Salad Sandwiches
2026/08/21
Episode 186 features Mike and guest Joe Petrovic covering news and a deep dive into their Japan trip.
News: U.S. Bank launched transfer partners (Flying Blue, Ethiopian Sheba Rewards, ALL), but access is limited to legacy cards no longer open to new applicants. Aeroplan is reinstating its 18-month points expiration policy starting November 30, 2026, with any account activity resetting the clock. Both hosts also shared recent card bonuses and trip updates, including Mike's Punta Cana stay at Sanctuary Cap Cana.
Japan trip: The main topic was their 4-5 night Tokyo, 2-night Osaka trip, booked largely with points and miles (Joe's itinerary was roughly $41K in retail value). Outbound flights included Mike's Singapore Airlines business class LAX-NRT (using stranded SQ miles) and Joe's ANA first class ORD-NRT. Hotels ranged from the budget-friendly Comfort Kanda to the iconic Park Hyatt Tokyo (with a suite upgrade) and Hilton Osaka in the well-connected Umeda area. They covered sightseeing highlights (Shibuya, Asakusa, Lake Kawaguchi/Mt. Fuji, Odaiba, Dotonbori, Osaka Castle), food favorites (sushi, yakiniku, tonkatsu, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, and 7-Eleven egg salad sandwiches), and getting around via trains and the Suica card.
Return: Both flew JAL business/first ITM-HND-ORD and sampled several Haneda lounges. The episode closed with a tip: dump spare change into a 7-Eleven coin machine before leaving Japan to convert it into bills.

Gondola AI Features and Review
2026/08/14
Episode 185 of the Award Travel 101 podcast features Angie Sparks and guest Xan Tanner, founder of Gondola AI. The episode opens with a helpful reminder about using unused Instacart credits to support food banks through Community Carts, followed by several travel-industry updates. Citi is refreshing the American Airlines Executive Card with new perks, including American Airlines Vacations, in-flight and Admirals Club credits, Omni and Avis status, and enhanced Lyft and loyalty benefits, although the annual fee is increasing to $695. Angie also highlights current transfer bonuses, including 30% from Amex Membership Rewards to Avios programs and 40% from Citi ThankYou Points to Turkish, as well as Frontier’s limited-time $199 GoWild! Pass. Angie and Xan also share recent credit-card wins and upcoming travel plans, including trips to Chicago, Milwaukee, Anguilla, Sicily, and Istanbul.
The main topic is Gondola AI, which Xan developed after years of traveling for work and wondering whether AI could manage travel more efficiently—earning more points, saving money, and understanding an individual traveler’s preferences. Gondola has evolved significantly with advances in AI and is now available on the web, through its app, and within ChatGPT, where results can be personalized based on a user’s points and travel profile. Unlike many award-search and “reservation gardening” tools, Gondola is free and can book directly for users, allowing them to retain points, status benefits, and other perks while also earning Gondola Cash. The platform monitors hotel, flight, and car reservations for price drops and can reprice bookings when possible, while generating revenue through hotel and rental commissions that it shares with users.
For casual travelers, Xan recommends taking advantage of Gondola’s status challenge, which can increase Triplestacking rewards from 3% to 5% after booking three nights during the first week. The episode closes with a reminder to use your points rather than letting them sit, especially as loyalty programs continue to devalue their currencies—as demonstrated by Marriott’s recent 6% devaluation. The broader message is that travelers should take advantage of their points and available benefits now while using tools like Gondola AI to automate the work of finding savings and maximizing rewards.

Greece Using Points and Miles
2026/08/07
Episode 184 of the Award Travel 101 podcast featured Cameron Laufer and April Rose recapping their recent trips to Greece while also covering the latest points and miles news. The episode opened with a discussion of a community post about whether it was worth paying to keep a small British Airways Avios balance from expiring, with members offering a variety of creative solutions. News included American Express adding Leading Hotels of the World as a Membership Rewards transfer partner, new Alaska Mileage Plan redemption opportunities on Philippine Airlines, American Airlines adding Oman Air award bookings, and tighter access rules for Chase Sapphire Lounges. Cameron and April also shared recent credit card approvals and upcoming travel plans before diving into the main topic.
The Greece recap focused on how each host used points, miles, and travel perks to maximize their trips. Cameron walked through his family's itinerary of Athens, Naxos, and Santorini, explaining why he mixed award flights, ferries, and inexpensive domestic flights to balance convenience and value. He discussed the pros and cons of the Grand Hyatt Athens, vacation rentals for a family of five, and several ways he saved money using card benefits like Lyft credits, Blacklane credits, and airport lounge access. April shared highlights from her own island-hopping adventure, including Mykonos, Paros, and Milos, along with booking Emirates First Class home using a strategic credit card signup bonus.
The episode wrapped up with practical advice for anyone planning a trip to Greece. The hosts recommended visiting the Acropolis early or late in the day, renting a car to explore Naxos, checking Santorini's cruise ship schedule before visiting Oia, and packing for cool evenings during shoulder season. April also highlighted the incredible history of Delos and noted Hyatt's growing presence in Greece. Cameron closed with a useful Chase Ultimate Rewards tip, explaining how he successfully transferred points between family members by linking accounts through an intermediary household member when a direct transfer wasn't possible.

Where To Go With 100K Membership Rewards
2026/07/31
Episode 183 of the Award Travel 101 podcast, hosted by Angie Sparks and Cameron Laufer, covers the latest points and miles news, personal card updates, and practical award travel strategies. The hosts discuss current promotions, including back-to-school airline shopping portal bonuses, Citi's 20% transfer bonus to Flying Blue, and Chase Freedom Flex's upcoming removal of foreign transaction fees. They also highlight a concerning change from Singapore Airlines, which appears to require members to have KrisFlyer miles in their accounts before they can search award availability, making trip planning more difficult. Angie and Cameron also share their recent credit card activity, including meeting spending requirements, closing cards with high annual fees, and adjusting travel plans after flight cancellations.
The main topic focuses on how to stretch 100,000 American Express Membership Rewards points into a vacation for two, using a budget of 100,000 points plus up to $1,000 out of pocket. Angie shares examples for Toronto, Denver, and San Juan, combining airline transfer partners like Aeroplan, Delta, JetBlue, and Hilton to maximize value, while Cameron presents sample itineraries to Park City, Orlando, and Madrid using transfer partners, Hilton points, and Amex Travel benefits. The episode emphasizes that flexibility with destinations and travel dates is often the key to finding great award availability. The tip of the week encourages listeners not to hesitate to close credit cards that no longer provide value, especially when the annual fee outweighs the benefits.

More Points and Miles Tools We Use
2026/07/24
Episode 182 of the Award Travel 101 podcast opens with a spotlight on member Alison’s incredible points-funded safari to Kenya, a reminder that award travel can unlock experiences far beyond flights and hotel chains. By leveraging a Virgin Red redemption, an Amex transfer bonus, and Alaska miles for long-haul flights, she and her travel partner enjoyed five nights at an all-inclusive safari lodge with twice-daily game drives for the equivalent of just over 80,000 points per night. The hosts also covered several noteworthy developments in the points world, including the opening of the new Chase Sapphire Lounge at Dallas/Fort Worth, the new Air Canada and Hyatt partnership, a lucrative Capital One Spark Cash Plus offer, and Rove adding Qantas as a transfer partner with a limited-time bonus.
The hosts also shared personal travel updates and a useful booking lesson. Cameron discussed having a Qatar Airways flight to Thailand unexpectedly canceled without notice, ultimately reworking the itinerary through Chicago and securing a backup Starlux business class award. He also discovered that a Hyatt Place booking in Louisville appeared nonrefundable online but actually carried a 60-day cancellation policy after messaging Hyatt—a good reminder to verify cancellation terms instead of relying solely on what a website displays.
The main discussion focused on the non-award tools that make the hobby easier. Angie and Cameron highlighted their favorite award search platforms, including Seats.aero, AwardWallet, MaxMyPoint, FlightConnections, and Google Flights, before expanding into budgeting software, credit card benefit tracking, and trip planning. AwardWallet and CardPointers were praised for keeping track of points, free night certificates, credits, and card offers, while Google Sheets, Google Maps, Facebook travel groups, TripIt, and ChatGPT have become essential planning tools for organizing itineraries, researching destinations, and building customized travel plans. The episode emphasized that while earning points is important, having the right collection of tools can save time, prevent costly mistakes, and make planning award travel far less stressful.

Is Booking Hotels Direct Dead?
2026/07/17
The Award Travel 101 crew kicked off Episode 181 by discussing one of the week's hottest travel deals: Norse Atlantic's $118 one-way fare from Orlando to London Gatwick. While the price grabbed plenty of attention, the hosts reminded listeners to look beyond the headline fare, noting Norse's low-cost model means extra fees for amenities that many travelers expect. They also covered several major developments in the points and miles world, including American Airlines quietly increasing award prices on certain Japan Airlines partner flights, an enhanced World of Hyatt credit card welcome offer, a wave of valuable Amex Offers for hotels and travel, and Marriott's latest award pricing increase. Angie and Cameron also shared updates on their own points-earning progress and upcoming travel plans, including schedule changes, hotel decisions, and new credit card bonuses.
The main discussion centered on whether booking hotels directly with points is still the best strategy as hotel loyalty programs continue to devalue their currencies. Using real-world examples from Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt, the hosts compared direct award bookings against Chase Travel, Capital One Travel, Citi Travel, and American Express Travel. In many cases, travel portals—especially when paired with annual travel credits, Points Boost, Fine Hotels + Resorts, or The Edit benefits—required significantly fewer transferable points than booking directly, particularly for Marriott and Hilton stays. Hyatt remained the notable exception, where transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards to Hyatt often continued to provide the strongest value. The episode concluded by encouraging listeners to think beyond traditional award bookings, weigh elite benefits and earnings when comparing options, and wrapped up with a practical international travel tip: always pay in the local currency when using a credit card abroad and avoid Euronet ATMs, which typically offer poor exchange rates.

The main segment spotlights Napa Valley as a destination, with both hosts sharing their own trip breakdowns — flights, hotel picks (Alila Napa Valley, Andaz Napa, Silverado Resort), wineries, and food recommendations like Ad Hoc and Mustard's. Are They Still Skypesos?
2026/07/03
Hosts Angie Sparks and Justin Walter open with a member highlight—Lori’s Northern Lights trip to Finland with her son—before diving into a busy news week. Wyndham Rewards is overhauling its award chart to four fixed tiers (5,000–45,000 points/night) starting September 15, 2026, with most hotels expected to stay in the lower tiers. Asiana Airlines will exit Star Alliance on December 16, 2026 as part of its Korean Air merger, though bookings and elite benefits continue as normal until then. One Key Rewards (Expedia/Hotels.com/Vrbo) is making changes effective July 28 that look like a net negative—boosting non-flight earning to 3% OneKeyCash while killing flight earnings and dropping its Hotel Price Guarantee. And Bilt Rewards added Preferred Hotels & Resorts’ “I Prefer” program as a new transfer partner as of June 22.
On the personal front, Angie’s chasing spend on an Alaska business card and two Amex Business Platinum cards (timed conveniently around their Milwaukee meetup payments), plus deposits down for Morocco and golf trip tours—now hunting flights to Ireland for four. Justin knocked out bonuses on a United Explorer and Citi AAdvantage card, celebrated landing a Ritz-Carlton card in the household, and is weighing Delta One vs. AA business class for a Rome trip while a Munich trip hangs in the balance.
The main topic tackles whether Delta SkyMiles still deserves its “SkyPesos” reputation, pointing to a string of elevated card offers and Thrifty Traveler Premium alerts suggesting real value can be found with the right search strategy (round-trip searches often price better). They close with a timely tip: burn those credit card credits before June ends—Justin’s using his Uber credit on dinner that very night.

Earning Points on College
2026/06/26
Episode 178 of the Award Travel 101 podcast, hosted by Cameron Laufer and Eric Holly, focused on maximizing points and miles around one of life’s most expensive milestones: college. The episode opened with a discussion about the demise of a popular Paze/Newegg workaround that had allowed users to earn 10x Ultimate Rewards points through select Chase Sapphire and Freedom cards. While gift card purchases at Newegg are no longer eligible, Cameron and Eric reminded listeners that opportunities still exist through other Paze merchants such as United, StubHub, Sephora, and Domino’s. The hosts also covered several noteworthy developments in the points world, including Chase’s rare 100,000-point Sapphire Preferred bonus, a 15% transfer bonus from American Express Membership Rewards to Avianca LifeMiles, new Chase Freedom quarterly bonus categories, and tighter restrictions on booking award tickets for friends and family through Qatar Airways.
The main discussion centered on strategies for earning rewards while paying college-related expenses. Both hosts emphasized that tuition payments, despite often carrying processing fees near 3%, can still make sense when used to earn lucrative welcome bonuses, elite status thresholds, free night certificates, or airline loyalty benefits. Eric highlighted the use of Gift of College gift cards purchased at grocery stores to earn bonus rewards before loading funds into a 529 plan, while Cameron discussed opportunities to pay expenses with credit cards and potentially reimburse oneself from a 529 account. They also explored ways to earn rewards on student housing, sorority dues, and other campus expenses, including using Bilt for rent payments and strategically timing large expenses to meet spending requirements.
The episode concluded with a discussion on helping college students build good financial habits while earning rewards. Both hosts favored keeping things simple, often recommending a single card setup such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Citi Strata Premier, or Amex Gold to maximize common college spending categories like dining and groceries. Authorized user cards were presented as a useful tool for parents who want visibility into spending and easier record-keeping for reimbursements. Cameron shared that his daughter’s newly approved Sapphire Preferred will likely become her primary college card, while Eric discussed tailoring card strategies to each of his children’s financial maturity and goals. The broader takeaway was that while college can feel like a financial “demotion” for parents, it also presents numerous opportunities to earn valuable points, miles, and travel rewards from expenses that would be incurred anyway.

A pod for the Million Mile Secrets crowd.
Hosts haven’t traveled much so don’t have experiences to share and some of the information they give is wrong or not totally accurate. YMMV.
