When  in 1856 French chef Monsieur Augustine Francois Anezin created a masterpiece by layering two rounds of golden sponge cake with a thick, velvety vanilla custard. To finish, he draped the entire creation in a rich, glossy chocolate glaze for The Parker House Hotel (now the Omni Parker House Hotel) in, of course, Boston  in those days cakes and pies were baked with the same kinds of pans, and even the words were used interchangeably. As a result, the Boston cream pie kept its old-fashioned name, in addition to its delicious flavor.

Imagine a velvety base of rich cream cheese, sugar, and eggs, infused with pumpkin purée and a warm medley of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. This luscious filling is often nestled in a buttery crust made from graham crackers or crushed cookies. Cheesecakes can be dated as far back as the 5th century B.C. when the ancient Greeks made them with cheese pounded with honey and flour. It was the first sitcom to be shot in 35mm film in front of a live audience, those were real laughs we were hearing, not canned laughter. Three cameras were used simultaneously to shoot the show, allowing three different angles for each scene. Today reruns of I Love Lucy are broadcast on several late-night networks, such as the Hallmark Channel, TBS, Nick and Nite, and TV Land, as well as many streaming sites. It is credited to be the longest-broadcasted TV show of all time.

Gumbo is different than stew---stew is a thicker, slow cooked meal while gumbo is made with a roux (mix of flour and fat) served over rice...and there are 2 different types: Creole Gumbo, often called "city gumbo," is a New Orleans style that includes tomatoes, which gives it a reddish tint and Cajun Gumbo which hails from the countryside and bayous--typically tomato-free and it focuses on chicken and spicy andouille sausage. For centuries, it has been a big part of Polish cuisine. Pierogies are dumplings of unleavened dough and filled with potatoes, cheese, and even fruit. They are boiled and then pan fried in butter to give them a delicious finish before eating. Many other cultures have something similar to pierogis like: samosas, empanadas, and knishs but the Eastern European immigrants popularized pierogi in the United States. At first, immigrants served pierogi to only their families...then, some ethnic restaurants served pierogis to their customers. After World War II, ethnic churches sold pierogi as a staple fundraiser. They aren't just savory either--the dessert pierogis are filled with fruit can be enjoyed topped with applesauce, maple syrup, chocolate sauce and/or whipped cream.

An Apple Betty or as it's sometimes called a Brown Betty is an old-fashioned American baked dessert made by alternating layers of fruit and sweetened, buttered breadcrumbs. Because apples are the traditional fruit choice dating back to the colonial era, the terms are frequently used interchangeably.  Apple Betty differs from an apple crips because an Apple Betty traditionally uses buttered breadcrumbs or cubed bread, while an Apple Crisp features a streusel topping made with oats, flour, butter, and sugar.
