In this episode, I answer a question from a massage therapist in Pennsylvania about why I never take on a client in acute pain who is trying to find relief as soon as possible. The question came from a Massage Therapist named Charles from Pennsylvania, who is in year 10 in practice, where he focuses on injury and pain treatments. The question was… “ I have a pretty steady and busy practice, and most of my new clientele comes from referrals from other clients. I do love helping people who are in pain.  One area I struggle with is trying so hard to accommodate someone who is in acute pain and wants to get in as soon as possible, and is also a referral from an existing client. I have found that even when I bend over backwards to add them onto an already full schedule, when I explain to them that they need to do more follow-up work, they just tell me they will call me back when it gets bad again. I am glad I can help them, but my goal is to support them long-term rather than just responding when things get really bad and assuming I can get them in right away. In this episode, I answer a question from a massage therapist from Washington who is struggling with trying to stop treating a client in their practice that never listens to advice on how to get better and blames them for still being in pain. A question came from a Massage Therapist in Washington who has been in practice since 2018 and specializes in working with clients who are injured and in pain. The question was: “ I have been working with a client for the past 6 months who has some significant neck and shoulder pain. They also work out 6 days a week, doing some pretty intense CrossFit-style workouts, and, when we first started treatment, they told me that being fit and working out is the most important part of their lives.  Every time we seem to make some progress, they decide to push themselves and undo all the work we did with some crazy workout. When I try to tell them they should cut back on the workouts to let it heal, they just tell me that it isn’t possible.  Even worse, when they do get a flare-up, they blame it on the treatment I did and say I must have been too aggressive with it, because the workouts are not a problem. I dread seeing this person on my schedule, and they’ve become such a pain that I want to be done with them. The problem is they come from a local gym where I get a good amount of my clients from, and I am worried that if I fire them from the practice, they will talk badly about me to my other clients.
