Why Do We Say "I Am Not Worthy" Before Communion?
2026/10/19
Why do we repeat a Roman centurion's words just before receiving Communion? A story in Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist brought that question to mind. The Gospel account behind the words points us toward humility, faith, and a man who came to Jesus for someone he loved. The next time you hear those words at Mass, pause and ask: Do I trust Jesus to heal me? And do I bring the people I love to him?
Why You May Not Be Growing in Your Spiritual Life
2026/10/12
We make time for so many things in our daily lives, but how much time do we spend learning about God and growing in our faith? The saints and great spiritual teachers of the Church have long emphasized the importance of spiritual reading. Without it, we can find ourselves spiritually stagnant, even after years of practicing our faith. In this episode, Cyndi shares insights from Fr. Chad Ripperger, Fr. John Hardon, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and Archbishop Fulton Sheen on why spiritual reading matters. She also recommends four excellent Catholic books that can help deepen your prayer life, strengthen your trust in God, and bring new understanding and appreciation to your Catholic faith. The challenge is simple: Always have a good spiritual book you're actively reading. Even ten minutes a day can make a difference. Here are four excellent Catholic books I recommend for anyone wanting to deepen their faith and grow closer to God. 1. Searching for and Maintaining Peace — Fr. Jacques Philippe A short, practical book about learning to trust God, overcome worry and discouragement, and maintain peace of heart even during life's difficulties. View or order from Scepter Publishers 2. The Better Part — Fr. John Bartunek, LC An excellent resource for developing a deeper relationship with Jesus through meditation on the four Gospels. It helps turn Scripture reading into personal prayer and can be used for years as a daily prayer companion. View or order from Sophia Institute Press 3. Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist — Dr. Brant Pitre A fascinating exploration of the connections between the Old Testament, the Jewish Passover, and Jesus' institution of the Eucharist. This book can deepen your understanding and appreciation of Christ's Real Presence and the Holy Mass. View or order from Ignatius Press 4. The Fulfillment of All Desire — Ralph Martin Drawing on the wisdom of seven great Doctors of the Church, this comprehensive guide explains the stages of spiritual growth, the obstacles to holiness, and our journey toward deeper union with God. View or order from Renewal Ministries Read Fr. Hardon's complete article
St. Dominic and the 15,000 Demons
2026/10/06
St. Louis de Montfort recounts an extraordinary story about St. Dominic, 15,000 demons, and the power of the Rosary. Cyndi shares this remarkable account along with testimony from Padre Pio and Catholic exorcists about why the Rosary has long been called a powerful weapon against the demonic. It is a vivid reminder of the power of every Hail Mary—and why we should never underestimate the power of the Rosary Mary so ofter implores us to pray.
How Was St. Joseph Chosen to Be Mary's Husband?
2026/09/28
The Gospel of Matthew introduces Joseph simply as "the husband of Mary." But have you ever wondered how he became her husband in the first place? Scripture doesn't tell us how Joseph was chosen. But ancient Christian tradition—and a remarkable account from the 17th-century mystic Venerable Mary of Ágreda—offers a fascinating backstory. In this episode, Cyndi shares Ágreda's account of the selection of Joseph and uncovers a surprising connection to the Old Testament that makes one detail of the story especially significant. But the deeper question is not only how Joseph was chosen. It is what he was chosen for. Pope St. John Paul II provides the answer—and it reveals just how extraordinary Joseph's vocation really was. A beautiful look at the hidden calling of St. Joseph, the choice God placed before him, and the quiet yes that helped change the course of salvation history.
What Can Humans Do That Angels Cannot?
2026/09/21
We tend to think about everything angels can do that we cannot. But what if the Catholic understanding of suffering reveals something extraordinary that human beings can do that even angels cannot? A comment from Fr. Dan Reehil led Cyndi to look at human weakness, Christ's Cross, and our place in God's plan from a completely different direction. What Christ did with suffering changes what our own pain can become—and reveals that even when we think we have nothing left to give, we may still have something powerful to offer.
The Demon Knew His Sins—Then Something Changed
2026/08/31
Dr. Dan Schneider was assisting during an exorcism when something happened that stopped the session. What happened next—and what changed when one of the men returned to the room—offers a remarkable way of looking at something familiar in the Catholic faith. It also raises a much deeper question: When our sins begin to define us, is that how God sees us? This story may change the way you see what is waiting for you when you come home to the Father. References & Further Listening The Shawn Ryan Show — Episode #224 Dan Schneider — U.S. Army Attack Helicopter Pilot Turned Exorcist Assistant Released August 4, 2025 The discussion referenced in this episode begins at approximately 17:15, with the story of the trainee priest and Confession beginning around 17:36. Schneider's discussion of the demon no longer recognizing the priest after Confession, followed by his explanation of sin as a "pattern break," begins around 17:56. Official episode: https://shawnryanshow.com/blogs/the-shawn-ryan-show/srs-224-dan-schneider-u-s-army-attack-helicopter-pilot-turned-exorcist Catechism of the Catholic Church, §1468 "The whole power of the sacrament of Penance consists in restoring us to God's grace and joining us with him in an intimate friendship." See also CCC §1465, which describes the priest in the Sacrament of Penance as a sign of "the Father who awaits the prodigal son and welcomes him on his return."
Does God Lead Us into Temptation?
2026/08/25
Does God ever lead us toward sin? When we pray, "Lead us not into temptation," the words can sound as though we are asking God not to tempt us—but Scripture tells us clearly that God tempts no one. In this episode, Cyndi explains what this often-misunderstood petition of the Our Father actually means, the important difference between being tested and being tempted, and why temptation itself is not the same as consenting to sin. She also uncovers a beautiful connection hidden in the order of the Lord's Prayer: in "forgive us our trespasses," we ask for mercy after we have fallen; in "lead us not into temptation," we ask for grace when temptation comes, before we fall again. The Our Father is more than a prayer to memorize. It is the loving guidance of a Father who knows exactly what his children need to remain close to him and grow in holiness.
Why did Mary Magdalene Think Jesus Was the Gardener?
2026/08/17
Why does St. John tell us that Mary Magdalene mistook the risen Jesus for the gardener? In this episode, Cyndi looks at Mary's encounter with Christ outside the empty tomb and a fascinating reflection from St. Gregory the Great. Mary may have been mistaken about who was standing before her—but she may not have been entirely mistaken about what He was doing. This small detail in John's Gospel reveals something beautiful about the way Christ works within the human heart. Even when our prayers seem unanswered, suffering does not make sense, or we cannot see what God is doing, He may be closer than we realize—patiently bringing forth new life within us. The challenge this week is simple: Don't leave the garden too soon. References The Gospel According to John 19:41; 20:1–18 John identifies the location of the tomb as a garden and recounts Mary Magdalene's encounter with the risen Jesus. Read John 20 through the USCCB St. Gregory the Great, Forty Gospel Homilies, Homily 25 Gregory reflects on Mary remaining at the tomb, Christ calling her by name, and her mistaken belief that He was the gardener. This homily contains the reflection: "Was he not spiritually a gardener for her, when he planted the fruitful seeds of virtue in her heart by the force of his love?" English translation by David Hurst, O.S.B., Cistercian Publications, 1990. "Mary Magdalene—Gregory the Great" An accessible excerpt from Homily 25, including Gregory's reflections on Mary's love, perseverance, and recognition of Christ. What Can Happen in the Final Seconds Before Death?
2026/08/10
What can happen in a human heart when everyone else thinks the story is already over? In this episode, Cyndi shares the remarkable story of a grieving widow whose husband died by suicide and her unexpected encounter with St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars. What he reportedly told her about the moments "between the bridge and the water" opens up a much larger question: what can happen between a person and God in the final moments of life? Drawing on the Catechism, Scripture, and the Diary of St. Faustina, Cyndi explores what the Catholic Church teaches about suicide, repentance, prayer, and the mercy of God—and why we should never presume that we know the whole story of another person's soul. But there is another part of this story worth considering: the quiet faith of a wife who continued to pray for her husband even when it seemed nothing was changing. For anyone who loves someone who seems far from God, this story is a reminder not to give up. We cannot see another person's heart or know how God may be working within it. Our part is to remain faithful, keep praying, keep loving—and never underestimate what God can do with the quiet witness of a life lived with Him. References & Further Reading For listeners who would like to explore the story and teachings discussed in this episode more deeply: Francis Trochu, The Curé d'Ars: St. Jean-Marie-Baptiste Vianney Trochu's biography is the principal source for the account of the grieving widow, Abbé Guillaumet, and St. John Vianney's reported words concerning what happened "between the parapet of the bridge and the water." The account also includes the details concerning the wife's Marian devotion and her husband sometimes joining in her prayers. The Curé d'Ars — Francis Trochu Catechism of the Catholic Church, §§2280–2283 — Suicide The Church's teaching on the gravity of suicide, factors that can diminish personal responsibility, and why we should not despair of the eternal salvation of those who have taken their own lives. Of particular importance is §2283: God can provide, "by ways known to him alone," the opportunity for repentance. Catechism §§2280–2283 — Vatican St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, Diary: Divine Mercy in My Soul, §1698 St. Faustina reflects on God's mercy reaching a soul in the final moments of life, even when nothing occurring within that soul is visible from the outside. The passage includes the words quoted in this episode: "Outwardly, it seems as if everything were lost, but it is not so." 1 Samuel 16:7 God reminds Samuel that human beings see outward appearances, while "the LORD looks into the heart"—an important Scriptural foundation for the central theme of this episode. Read 1 Samuel 16 — USCCB Pope Benedict XVI, Letter Proclaiming a Year for Priests (June 16, 2009) Benedict XVI reflects on the extraordinary priestly ministry of St. John Vianney and notes that the growing number of penitents eventually kept the Curé of Ars in the confessional for as many as sixteen hours a day. Quo Vadis? The Story That Isn't in the Bible.
2026/07/31
Why the Quo Vadis Church Still Matters. Along the Appian Way outside Rome stands a small church called Domine Quo Vadis—"Lord, where are You going?" According to an ancient Christian tradition, this is where St. Peter encountered the risen Christ while fleeing Nero's persecution and was compelled to turn back toward Rome. The story is not found in Scripture, so why has the Church preserved it for nearly two thousand years? In this episode, Cyndi looks at the biblical Peter—the disciple who loved Jesus deeply but still had to learn to trust Him, accept correction, and follow where he would not have chosen to go. Through Peter's story, this little church offers an enduring reminder that holiness does not mean having everything figured out. It means remaining teachable and being willing to change direction when Christ shows us the way.
Can One Holy Hour Really Save Souls?
2026/07/16
In this episode of The Cyndi Peterson Show, Cyndi reflects on a powerful private revelation attributed to Blessed Dina Bélanger—a vision that has challenged Catholics for decades to consider the true power of Eucharistic Adoration. But what exactly was Jesus revealing? Could one Holy Hour really affect another person's eternal salvation? Drawing on the Church's teaching, the Catechism, and Our Lady's message at Fatima, Cyndi explains how intercessory prayer works, why Christ invites us to participate in His saving mission, and why our prayers matter before a soul reaches its final moment of decision.
He Confessed His Sins—Then Every Word on the Page Disappeared
2026/07/08
Have you ever walked out of Confession knowing that your sins were forgiven—but still struggled to truly believe it in your heart? In this episode of The Cyndi Peterson Show, Cyndi shares a powerful devotional story traditionally attributed to St. Anthony of Padua, one of the Church's greatest preachers and confessors. When a repentant sinner becomes too overcome with sorrow to speak his sins aloud, St. Anthony asks him to write them on a piece of paper and return to the confessional. What happens next offers an unforgettable image of the mercy of God and the extraordinary grace of the Sacrament of Confession. Through the story of the Blank Paper Miracle, Sacred Scripture, and the teaching of the Catholic Church, this episode explores a truth every Catholic needs to take to heart: when Christ forgives our sins, His forgiveness is real. If you have ever struggled with guilt over sins you have already confessed, wondered whether God has truly forgiven you, or simply want to grow in your trust in His mercy, this episode is for you.
Fr. Jason Lewis - Medjugorje 2026
2026/06/19
While leading a pilgrimage in Medjugorje, our group had the privilege of hearing a beautiful and thought-provoking talk by Fr. Jason Lewis, MIC, the Chaplain for English-speaking pilgrims in Medjugorje. Fr. Jason is a priest of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception, a religious community known throughout the world for its promotion of the message of Divine Mercy and deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Those two pillars of Catholic spirituality make him uniquely suited to minister to the thousands of English-speaking pilgrims who come to Medjugorje seeking a deeper encounter with Christ through the guidance of Our Lady. In this episode, I share Fr. Jason's inspiring message exactly as our pilgrimage group heard it. His reflections offer practical wisdom, a deeper understanding of God's mercy, and a renewed appreciation for Our Lady's role in leading us ever closer to her Son.
Could Your Answered Prayer Cost You Your Soul?
2026/06/19
On the final day of a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Cyndi reflects on a simple question asked by a young boy on Apparition Hill: Why are there so many rocks here? The answer leads to a profound lesson about the spiritual life, the condition of our hearts, and the trust God asks of each of us. Drawing on a beloved story shared by Father Jozo, the words of the prophet Ezekiel, and the striking image of tiny flowers growing among the rocks of Apparition Hill, Cyndi explores one of the most difficult questions of faith: What if God does not answer our prayers the way we want because He sees something we cannot? We often come to God asking for healing, solutions, and relief from our burdens. Yet God's greatest desire is not simply to solve our problems—it is to save our souls and bring us safely home to Him. This episode is a reflection on surrender, trust, unanswered prayers, and learning to become like little children in the hands of a loving Father. If you are carrying a burden, waiting for an answer, or struggling to understand God's plan, this message is for you. His Heart Grew Three Sizes: The Story of St. Philip Neri
2026/06/15
What if the most remarkable thing about St. Philip Neri's enlarged heart wasn't that it became physically larger—but that it became more capable of love? In this episode, we explore one of the most extraordinary events in the lives of the saints. While praying in the Catacombs of Rome on the vigil of Pentecost, St. Philip Neri experienced what he described as a globe of fire entering his chest, filling him with such overwhelming joy and love of God that it transformed the rest of his life. After his death, examinations reportedly revealed that his heart had enlarged and two ribs had arched outward to accommodate it. But the real miracle was not the physical phenomenon. The real miracle was divine charity. Together, we'll explore the connection between St. Philip's experience and Pentecost, the biblical meaning of the heart, and how the Holy Spirit continues to pour the love of God into human souls today. We'll discover why the Holy Spirit does not simply comfort or inspire us, but enlarges our capacity to love God and our neighbor with a love that goes beyond our natural abilities. In a world where hearts can easily become small, fearful, wounded, and turned inward, St. Philip Neri reminds us that the Holy Spirit desires to transform us from the inside out. The same Spirit who descended upon the Apostles. The same Spirit who filled St. Philip Neri with divine charity. The same Spirit who desires to enlarge our hearts today. Join me as we reflect on joy, divine love, Pentecost, and the beautiful invitation to pray: "Holy Spirit, enlarge my heart."
