#243 Did Jesus Lead Israel Out of Egypt? (Jesus in the Old Testament)
2026/10/12
If Jesus is God and has always existed, where was He during the thousands of years covered by the Old Testament?
In this teaching episode, Joel Settecase explores three mysterious Old Testament figures whose identities are not fully revealed until the coming of Christ: the Angel of the Lord, the Word of the Lord, and the Son of Man.
The Angel of the Lord appears at pivotal moments throughout biblical history. He comforts Hagar, stops Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, speaks to Moses from the burning bush, commissions Gideon, claims to have delivered Israel from Egypt, bears God’s name, and is even called Yahweh.
Is this merely a created angel—or a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ?
Joel then examines the Word of the Lord. In the Old Testament, the Word does more than communicate a message. He creates, speaks, acts, delivers, judges, and appears personally to God’s people. The New Testament finally identifies Him: “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
The third figure is the Son of Man from Daniel 7—a human figure who comes with the clouds of heaven, receives an everlasting kingdom, and is worshiped by all nations. Jesus repeatedly applies this title to Himself and reveals that He is the promised divine-human King.
These three mysteries fit within Israel’s uncompromising belief that there is only one God. The New Testament does not abandon Old Testament monotheism. It reveals the triune identity of the one true God.
Jesus did not suddenly appear in Bethlehem. He was present throughout the biblical story—speaking, shepherding, rescuing, revealing God, and moving redemptive history toward His incarnation, death, resurrection, and eternal reign.

#242 Does God Choose Who Gets Saved?
2026/10/08
How does God take a sinner from spiritual death to eternal glory?
In this teaching episode, Joel Settecase explains the biblical doctrine of salvation—also known as soteriology—through the ordo salutis, the order of salvation.
Beginning with the “golden chain of redemption” in Romans 8, Joel traces God’s saving work from foreknowledge and predestination to calling, regeneration, justification, sanctification, perseverance, and final glorification.
The episode addresses some of Christianity’s most important and controversial questions:
Does God choose sinners for salvation, or do sinners choose Him first? Can divine predestination and genuine human choice both be true? Does regeneration come before faith? What do repentance and faith actually mean? And can someone who has truly been born again ever lose salvation?
Joel argues that salvation begins with God’s sovereign grace, not human merit or initiative. Before the foundation of the world, God chose a people in Christ—not because of anything good they had done or would do, but according to the loving purpose of His will.
Within their lifetimes, God effectually calls His people through the proclamation of the Gospel, removes their hearts of stone, and gives them new hearts capable of responding in repentance and faith.
Repentance and faith are two sides of the same coin: turning away from sin and idols while trusting in, submitting to, and pledging allegiance to Jesus Christ.
Those whom God foreknows, predestines, calls, and justifies will ultimately be glorified. The believer’s future salvation is so certain that Scripture can speak of it as already accomplished.
Salvation is God’s work from beginning to end—and all of it is to the praise of His glorious grace.

#241 Why Christians Cannot Affirm Homosexuality
2026/10/05
Does the Bible’s condemnation of homosexual practice mean that Christianity is hateful toward gay people?
In this teaching episode, Joel Settecase explains why biblical Christianity is not anti-gay, but anti-sin—and why that distinction matters.
The Christian message did not arise as a reaction to the modern LGBTQ movement. For nearly 2,000 years, Scripture has condemned homosexual practice alongside greed, drunkenness, theft, sexual immorality, verbal abuse, and every other form of rebellion against God.
But condemnation is not the final word.
The Gospel announces that sinners can be washed, sanctified, and justified through Jesus Christ. Christians do not speak about homosexuality because we believe ourselves to be morally superior. We speak because we too have sinned, and we have received forgiveness through Christ.
This episode also addresses the common objection, “It is not our place to judge.” Joel agrees that final judgment belongs to God—but God has already revealed His moral verdict in Scripture. Christians do not decide who goes to heaven or hell. Our responsibility is to agree with God, speak the truth in love, and call everyone—including ourselves—to repentance and faith.
The Christian message to the LGBTQ community is not hatred. It is the same message offered to every sinner: Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose on the third day, and gives eternal life to all who repent and believe.

#240 Why the Modern Self Is a Christian Idea Gone Rogue
2026/10/01
Who are you—and can you truly understand yourself without first understanding God?
In this conversation, Joel Settecase explores the Christian roots of personhood, identity, and the modern idea of the self.
Long before contemporary culture made self-expression the highest good, Scripture presented human beings as morally responsible persons who stand before God, possess real agency, and live within a meaningful story. David cries out to God in the Psalms. Paul describes the inner struggle of the human heart. Augustine recounts his restless journey toward the One who made him.
But the modern world has detached the self from its Creator.
Today, identity is treated as something we invent, perform, and constantly validate before an online audience. Social media intensifies the confusion by stripping away the stable coordinates of time, place, community, and personhood. We are told to discover ourselves while being shaped by countless voices competing to define us.
Christianity offers a better vision.
You are not merely a cog in a social machine, a product of your circumstances, or an interchangeable part of the crowd. You possess dignity, agency, hopes, and responsibility because you were created by God.
Yet you are not an autonomous, self-created individual either.
Drawing from Augustine, John Calvin, Francis Schaeffer, the Psalms, and the biblical doctrine of creation, Joel explains why knowledge of self and knowledge of God cannot be separated. God is the ultimate reference point who gives your identity meaning, boundaries, and purpose.
Like a plant ripped from its soil, the self does not become free by rejecting the conditions for which it was created. Freedom without God eventually becomes slavery—to approval, desire, passion, or the expectations of others.
You matter deeply. Your choices are real. But you can only understand who you are when you know the One who made you.

#239 The Terrifying Beings Guarding God’s Throne | Lecture for Students
2026/09/28
What are angels really like—and how different are they from the pictures we see in movies, paintings, and popular culture?
In this teaching lecture for the students of Village Bible Church, Joel Settecase introduces the unseen spiritual realm by exploring the biblical “hosts of heaven.”
Rather than relying on imagination or tradition, Joel turns to Scripture to examine several roles played by heavenly beings. These include throne guardians such as seraphim and cherubim, members of the divine council, messengers who carry out God’s commands, and warriors who battle against evil spiritual powers.
The lesson explores the burning, winged seraphim of Isaiah 6; the strange, multi-faced cherubim of Ezekiel; the angels who deliver God’s messages; and Michael, the heavenly warrior who fights against the forces of darkness.
Students will also learn why angels are described more often by their roles than by their physical appearance, why Scripture forbids worshiping or praying to angels, and how these powerful beings serve God and assist His people.
But the most important lesson is not ultimately about angels.
Angels guard God’s presence, carry His messages, and worship before His throne—but Jesus Christ is greater than every angel. He is the great High Priest, God in the flesh, and the One whom even the hosts of heaven worship.

#238 Death Before Adam? The Problem Old-Earth Christians Must Answer
2026/09/24
Can Christians consistently accept Darwinian evolution, millions of years, and the biblical account of creation?
In this interview episode, Joel Settecase speaks with a young-earth creationist Jonathan Sarfati of Creation Ministries International about the fossil record, chemical evolution, death before Adam, ancient human remains, aliens, and the mysterious Nephilim of Genesis 6.
The discussion begins with scientific challenges to evolution. Does the fossil record reveal gradual Darwinian development—or a series of sudden appearances? Can ordinary chemical processes explain how nonliving matter became the first living cell?
The conversation then turns to Scripture. According to Genesis and Romans 5, death, suffering, and disease entered the world through Adam’s rebellion. But if the fossil record represents millions of years before Adam, then animal death, cancer, violence, and even human death would precede the Fall.
Can old-earth creationists limit Romans 5 to human death? The guest argues that commonly accepted dating methods still place human fossils long before any plausible biblical date for Adam.
Joel and his guest also explore whether ancient stories about gods producing offspring with human women preserve a distorted memory of the Nephilim, and whether Genesis was compiled by Moses from earlier historical records.
This episode challenges Christians to examine whether modern evolutionary timelines can truly be reconciled with the biblical history of creation, the Fall, and redemption through Jesus Christ—the last Adam.

#237 Does the Incarnation Contradict Logic? | Christian vs. Atheist Debate
2026/09/21
If God is immaterial spirit, how can Jesus Christ be God in human flesh without violating the law of non-contradiction?
In this Christian vs. atheist debate clip, Joel Settecase responds to a thoughtful challenge concerning the incarnation.
The atheist asks whether Jesus can be both material and immaterial at the same time. Joel explains the Christian doctrine of the hypostatic union: the eternal Son of God took on a true human nature without surrendering, diminishing, or contradicting His divine nature.
Jesus did not cease to be God when He became man. The incarnation was an addition of human nature—not the subtraction or negation of deity.
The conversation then turns to another foundational issue: are the laws of logic genuinely universal and necessary, or are they contingent upon our desire to communicate intelligibly?
Can someone disprove the universality of logic simply by speaking nonsense? Or does our ability to recognize nonsense actually confirm that objective standards of intelligibility already exist?
This exchange explores the relationship between logic, meaningful communication, the incarnation, and the Christian claim that God is the necessary foundation for rational thought.

#236 Can Atheists Use Logic Without Borrowing From God? | Debate Highlight
2026/09/17
Can an atheist use logic while admitting that only the Christian worldview can account for it?
In this Christian vs. atheist debate clip, Joel Settecase and his opponent discuss whether the laws of logic are universal, objective, necessary, and unchanging—and what kind of worldview can explain them.
The atheist proposes a clever escape: even if the Christian God grounds logic, why can’t an atheist simply borrow that explanation and continue using logic without becoming a Christian?
Joel argues that this concession gives away the debate. If the atheist must step into the Christian worldview to justify reason, then atheism cannot provide the foundation it needs. And the God who grounds logic is not an abstract philosophical principle. He is the triune God revealed in Scripture—the same God who commands sinners to repent and believe the Gospel.
The exchange also addresses whether the Bible is merely one self-authenticating book among many. Joel explains why every ultimate standard involves circular reasoning at the foundational level, but argues that Scripture provides an all-encompassing and internally consistent framework for God, man, knowledge, morality, and the world.
This debate presses beyond whether atheists can practically use logic. The deeper question is whether their worldview can justify the reasoning they rely on—or whether every argument against Christianity must first borrow from Christianity.

#235 Morality Question: Does Saving the Mother Ever Require Killing the Baby?
2026/09/14
Is abortion ever medically necessary to save the life of a pregnant mother?
In this interview clip, Joel Settecase speaks with an experienced anesthesiologist about one of the most emotionally powerful arguments in the abortion debate: what should doctors do when pregnancy threatens a woman’s life?
The conversation examines a real hospital case in which a pregnant woman suffering from heart failure was offered an abortion—only to recover after receiving appropriate treatment from cardiology and pulmonary specialists.
They also discuss high-risk pregnancies, emergency delivery after fetal viability, prenatal surgery, and conditions such as hydrocephalus that can sometimes be treated while the baby is still in the womb.
The episode then addresses ectopic pregnancy. Is removing a pregnancy developing outside the uterus morally and medically equivalent to an elective abortion? The guest explains why ectopic pregnancy is a distinct medical condition in which the child cannot develop to term and the mother faces grave danger.
This conversation challenges Christians to think carefully about medical terminology, distinguish directly killing an unborn child from legitimate treatment intended to save life, and refuse simplistic answers in difficult situations.

#234 Debate: The Atheist’s Argument Collapses Into a Logic Problem
2026/09/10
Can an atheist demand evidence for Christianity without first accounting for evidence, reason, and logic within his own worldview?
In this Christian vs. atheist debate clip, Joel Settecase challenges an atheist who argues that Christianity lacks evidence and that the Bible contains contradictions.
But the discussion quickly moves beneath those objections to a more fundamental question: what makes logical reasoning possible at all?
The atheist describes the laws of logic as concepts, mental processes, and human conventions. Joel presses him to explain how universal, immaterial, and unchanging logical laws can be grounded in a materialistic worldview.
The conversation also addresses alleged biblical contradictions, whether atheism is truly a neutral default position, and whether rejecting Christianity amounts to positive evidence for atheism.
Joel argues that the atheist must rely on logic, objective truth, and meaningful evidence to argue against God—yet those realities cannot be justified apart from the transcendent mind of God. In other words, atheism must borrow from the Christian worldview in order to attack it.
The exchange ultimately moves beyond abstract philosophy to the Gospel. The deepest problem is not merely intellectual inconsistency, but sin against the God in whose image we were made. Jesus Christ died for sinners, was buried, rose from the dead, and offers forgiveness to everyone who repents and believes.

#233 Can Women Be Pastors? And What Makes a Church Biblical?
2026/09/07
What is the church—and how can you tell whether a congregation is organized according to God’s word?
In this teaching episode, Joel Settecase presents a biblical doctrine of the church, also known as ecclesiology.
The discussion covers the relationship between the local, visible church and the universal body of Christ; why believers should commit to a local congregation; and how baptism, the Lord’s Supper, worship, membership, discipline, and restoration fit into the life of the church.
Joel also examines the biblical offices of elder and deacon. Are bishops, overseers, pastors, presbyters, and elders different offices—or different names for the same role? What qualifications does Scripture establish for church leaders? And what responsibilities belong to older men, older women, younger men, and the congregation as a whole?
The episode concludes by addressing one of the most controversial questions in modern Christianity: can women serve as pastors or elders? Joel argues that men and women possess equal dignity and value before God, while Scripture assigns them distinct and complementary roles within the church.
Ultimately, the church does not belong to pastors, elders, denominations, or congregations. It belongs to Jesus Christ. He is its head, king, and chief shepherd.

#232 Why I’m Pursuing Ordination as a Protestant
2026/09/03
Why pursue ordination if it does not make you a priest, confer a special spiritual status, or place an indelible mark on your soul?
In this episode, Joel Settecase explains why he is pursuing ordination through his local church as a Protestant, evangelical, and member of a non-denominational Bible church.
Drawing from both the Old and New Testaments, Joel examines the biblical pattern of setting apart qualified men for ministry through prayer, fasting, the laying on of hands, and public commissioning. He also explains why the local church—not merely a distant denomination—is best positioned to evaluate, train, affirm, and hold a minister accountable.
The episode explores what ordination does and does not mean. Ordination does not create an elite class of Christians or automatically make someone a pastor. Instead, it publicly confirms a man’s calling, recognizes his qualifications, establishes accountability, and sets him apart for a specific work of ministry.
Joel also shares the personal reasons behind his decision: deeper theological training, greater preparedness, stronger credibility with churches, and a meaningful connection between The Think Institute and his home church.
Ultimately, ordination is not about gaining a title. It is about submitting to biblical authority, honoring the gravity of ministry, multiplying qualified leaders, and serving Christ’s church faithfully.

#231 If God Is Obvious, Why Are There So Many Religions?
2026/08/31
If God is real and His existence is obvious, why are there so many religions—and why doesn’t everyone believe in Him?
In this episode, Joel Settecase answers one of the most common objections to Christianity by turning to Romans 1.
The Bible does not teach that God is hidden or that people simply lack enough evidence. Instead, it says that God has made Himself known through creation. His eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen, and all people are without excuse.
So why do unbelievers deny Him?
Joel explains the biblical doctrine of truth suppression: people genuinely know God, yet resist, distort, and suppress that knowledge because they do not want to glorify Him or give Him thanks.
This means the existence of many religions does not prove that God is unclear. False religions are not evidence that humanity knows nothing about God. They are evidence that sinners take the truth they know and reshape it into something more comfortable.
This episode also explores how creation reveals God’s power and character, why unbelief is a moral as well as intellectual issue, and how Christians should respond with truth, compassion, and thoughtful questions.
The goal is not to insult unbelievers, but to draw out the knowledge of God they already possess—and point them to the only true way of knowing Him personally: Jesus Christ.

#230 | Debate Highlight: Stop Letting the Skeptic Set the Rules
2026/08/27
Why do some skeptics keep demanding more evidence—no matter how much evidence Christians provide?
In this episode, Joel Settecase explains the difference between skeptic-first apologetics and Scripture-first apologetics.
Apologetics is the discipline of defending the truth of the Christian message. According to 1 Peter 3:15, Christians must always be prepared to give a reasoned defense for the hope within them. But how should that defense begin?
Many believers instinctively allow the skeptic to set the terms of the conversation. The skeptic claims to need more evidence, so the Christian gathers arguments, historical facts, and scientific data. Yet after hearing it all, the skeptic simply says, “I’m still not convinced.”
Joel calls this the cycle of doom.
The problem is not a lack of evidence. The deeper issue is that the skeptic interprets every piece of evidence through a worldview that has already rejected God and His word.
This episode challenges Christians to stop treating the unbeliever as neutral and to build their apologetic method on Scripture. If defending the faith is a good work, then Scripture—which equips the believer for every good work—must govern how apologetics is done.

#229 The Atheist Admits Objective Truth Is Hard to Explain | Debate Clip
2026/08/24
Can an atheist consistently investigate history without borrowing from the Christian worldview?
In this Christian vs. atheist debate clip, Joel Settecase speaks with a lifelong atheist who describes himself as a reluctant believer. Their conversation begins with miracle claims, historical evidence, and early Christian testimony—but quickly moves to a deeper question: what makes historical reasoning possible in the first place?
Historical inquiry depends on objective truth, reliable human reasoning, an orderly universe, consistent standards of evidence, and the expectation that the past can be meaningfully known. But can atheism account for those realities?
The discussion explores mathematical realism, brute facts, the relationship between abstract laws and the concrete world, and whether logic and truth ultimately require a mind in which they are grounded.
The atheist also raises a serious objection: Christianity asks us to trust events separated from us by nearly 2,000 years. Joel responds by addressing the Bible’s manuscript tradition, textual criticism, and the remarkable historical attestation supporting the biblical text.
This exchange gets beneath surface-level debates about individual pieces of evidence. The central issue is whether the atheist worldview can justify the very tools used to evaluate Christianity—or whether those tools already presuppose the truth of the Christian worldview.
