Like the little neurodivergent DJ that I am, I obsessively tag my tracks so i can easily filter them by all sorts of qualities. One of my tags is, for some reason, called ‘Secret Sauce’, and it’s reserved for the handful of disco, boogie and occasionally a bit Latin tunes that are very special to me. I’m not even sure what makes a track qualify as Secret Sauce, but it makes sense in my head. They’re obscure, wonderful, fierce disco bangers that work well together, often (but not always) with that characteristic up-down disco bass. Anyway, whatever the tag means, each track in this episode has it. This was an off the cuff friday night Twitch session where I just filtered by that tag and went live, and as it always is with these tunes, it was a ton of fun. Another Fresh Finds session, so all of these are new to me, though a fair few of them are even older than I am. Sugar Pie DeSanto and Steely Dan at one end, Nu Genea and musclecars at the other, and what - about fifty years in between? Opens balearic and jazzy, rolls through disco and soul, takes a detour via Colombia and Nigeria in the middle, then gets deeper towards the end. Sylvester and Hi-Gloss laying down some proper disco business along the way. Enjoy! Kept this one solidly funk and soul, with some jazzier bits thrown in for good measure. All selected off the cuff - complete with a few slightly shaky blends, as is the way when you’re winging it and mixing old funk tunes live. Some proper heavy hitters making an appearance - Curtis Mayfield, Lyn Collins, James Brown and Jamiroquai all turn up early doors alongside some more obscure bits, before the pace picks up and it gets more broken as it goes. A nice cosmic run in the middle too, with Dexter Wansel, Manzel and Captain Sky, and there's one of my own Curtis edits snuck in there, just because. The latest Funkier Session is a good one - this instalment comes from Deezee Wizzard, a DJ and producer from Germany who has done a guest mix for my radio show before (see episode 84 - https://soundcloud.com/evenfunkier/funkier-radio-84). This mix is a 78 minute journey into his brain and through his musical world, and it takes in all sorts - from disco to funk to housier bits, old stuff, new stuff, weird electro kind of stuff and some delights that I'd struggle to put a label on if I tried. It's weird, it's wonderful, but I like it very much - a total embodiment of the Funkier Sounds ethos - it's not about genre, it's all about the vibes… and this one's got vibes coming out of its ears. Right, so this one gets a bit lively. Opens up with a proper run of Afro and Antillean goodness - Voilaaa, Pasteur Lappe, Tabu Ley Rochereau - before things turn darker and acid-tinged, then we head off into loopy house territory for no particular reason. Faster than I normally go, and there's a few curveballs in there that I won't apologise for. Madeon closes it out, which even I didn't see coming. Enjoy! This one ended up going all over the place, geographically speaking - South Africa, Burkina Faso, Berlin, Japan, and a few stops I couldn't place if you asked me. Starts out funky and boogie-flavoured, rolls into some dusty, housier bits, then the Afro goodness takes over for a while. Finally got hold of that legendary Theo Parrish Sugarhill Gang edit I’ve been hunting, and there's one of my own edits hiding in there early on. Dug into the funkiest corners of my collection for this one - no clever journey, just a load of tunes that hit hard, one after the other. There's some proper heavyweight funky business occurring - Zapp, Dennis Coffey, Rose Royce… and Talking Heads again. Time for another one of my Fresh Finds sessions - each tune brand new to my collection… but not necessarily newly released - in fact I think most of these are at least a few years old. Started off at a very polite 80BPM, then gradually cranked things up to the mid 120s. As is the way with these sessions, anything can happen - we’ve got ambient Japanese loveliness, a Nina Simone edit, some Balearic wandering, then into some nice broken beat and house as the energy comes up. Started this episode on a bit of an old school tip with some lovely uplifting tunes, and a few from that late 80s golden era of early house music. Voodoo Ray bridges the gap into acid territory, then we descend into something a bit deeper with some chunky rollers and Afro goodies. We’ve got Jordan Rakei making an appearance in disguise, and we round off proceedings with a nice track called Smiling Into Eternity… which is something we should all try and do, right? My friends Karim and Karen had a BBQ, and I DJed there alongside a few other excellent selectors. We were outside in the evening, but moved proceedings into their kitchen later on to keep the neighbours onside - because it was LOUD! I had the closing set - about 2am to about 4am... and about 15 mins in I remembered to hit record! Kept the energy high, and bounced through the genres like nobody's business. Chunky house beats, old school and ravey vibes, some loopy nonsense and of course a few forays into disco. Some of the mixing is probably not the best, I was a bit worse for wear by this hour, but people didn't seem to mind. It was lots of fun! Next up on Funkier Sessions we’ve got a lovely mix from Leon Barnard. Dropping this mix in the middle of this endless UK summer feels like good timing, as it’s got sunshine written all over it. There’s plenty of old school hip hop, reggae vibes, some chilled out funk and soul. Lots in this one, and it’s good!

So I kept my hands firmly off the sync button this week, which is of course a healthy thing to do... but it does mean some of the blends are a touch rougher round the edges than usual… and, I’m not gonna lie - there’s a couple of full on trainwrecks in there. But the tunes more than make up for it - soulful and warm to start, then a proper roll through boogie, disco and deep funk, with Larry Graham reminding everyone how slap bass should be done. This one starts out in the sun - Latin and Afro grooves, easy and warm - then quietly sneaks off downstairs to where the bass is at.
