Suzanne Muldowney—better known to generations of Howard Stern fans as “Underdog Lady”—has been performing her unique interpretive dance as Underdog for more than 40 years. She hates that name, so please do not call her that. Suzanne first began portraying the cartoon superhero in the early 1980s, eventually becoming a familiar face on The Howard Stern Show and Howard’s television program in the 1990s. Her elaborate handmade Underdog costume and very serious interpretation of the character became one of the more memorable chapters in Stern Show history. But there’s an unexpected twist to Suzanne’s relationship with Underdog. She is TERRIFIED of the giant Underdog balloon that has appeared in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. In this conversation, Suzanne explains why the enormous parade balloon frightens her—and what she thinks about the possibility of seeing Underdog return to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2026. For anyone who remembers Suzanne from the Howard Stern Show, this is a chance to hear from the woman behind one of the most unforgettable characters from the Stern era. And if you’ve never heard of Suzanne before, you’re about to discover one of the most fascinating—and wonderfully unusual—stories in the history of the show. If you have any questions for Suzanne, or topics you’d like us to bring up the next time we see her, let us know in the comments! #SuzanneMuldowney #UnderdogLady #HowardStern
