AT THE GATES OF HADES | Matthew 16:13–18
2026/10/18
Why did Jesus choose the region of Caesarea Philippi, near Mount Hermon and its pagan sanctuaries, to ask His disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" Join Pastor Brandon Holthaus as we examine Peter's confession of Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the living God, and Christ's declaration: "I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." Explore the region's connections to pagan worship, ancient Jewish traditions concerning spiritual rebellion, and the significance of Jesus announcing His church in this setting. Discover how Christ's identity, the church's foundation, and His authority over death give believers confidence amid spiritual opposition. The church belongs to Jesus Christ—and neither the power of death nor the dominion of darkness can defeat His purposes.
Unlocking the Hebraic Idioms of the Bible: Episode 38
2026/10/14
Why did God tell Daniel to seal his prophecy until the time of the end? And what does Israel's prophetic future teach us about pride, suffering, spiritual deception, and our dependence on God? In this Hebraisms teaching, Pastor Brandon Holthaus examines Daniel 12 and the ancient Hebrew meaning of sealing a book. He explains how the book of Revelation provides greater understanding of Daniel's prophecies, including the final world empire, the Antichrist, the Tribulation, and God's future plans for Israel. Pastor Brandon also explores the biblical expression of breaking Israel's power, explaining how Israel's future trials connect to God's purpose of bringing His people to recognize Jesus Christ as their Messiah. But this message goes beyond biblical prophecy. It challenges believers to examine the deeper roots of personal struggles, spiritual bondage, pride, and self-reliance. Through the examples of Israel, Hosea, and Job, Pastor Brandon explains why God may allow hardship and how those experiences can reveal what is preventing us from growing into the people He created us to be. Are we simply asking God to remove our difficulties, or are we seeking to understand what He wants to teach us through them? **Scripture References:** Daniel 7, 11–12; Revelation 11–13, 22; Isaiah 28; Zechariah 12; Hosea; Job; Acts 20; Ezekiel 33; 2 Corinthians 12:9. The Spiritual Threat is Greater than the Physical Threat
2026/10/13
Jesus fed four thousand people with seven loaves and a few fish, yet His disciples soon worried about having no bread. Jesus turned their attention to a greater danger: the Pharisees' and Sadducees' corrupt teaching. In "The Spiritual Threat Is Greater than the Physical Threat," Pastor Brandon Holthaus examines Matthew 15:29–39 and 16:1–12, tracing Jesus' compassion for the multitudes, the religious leaders' demand for a sign, and His warning about spiritual deception. Physical needs can consume our attention while false doctrine quietly shapes our thinking. This message challenges us to remember God's provision, understand Scripture, recognize the evidence of the Messiah, and guard against teachings that lead us away from His truth. Trust Christ with your needs and make spiritual discernment a priority. #SpiritualDiscernment #FalseTeaching #BibleTeaching #Matthew15 #Matthew16 #FeedingTheFourThousand #JesusChrist #BiblicalTruth #PastorBrandonHolthaus #RockHarborChurch
Unlocking the Hebraic Idioms of the Bible: Episode 37
2026/10/07
In this study of Hebrew idioms and biblical prophecy, Pastor Brandon Holthaus examines Daniel chapters 11 and 12, revealing the meaning behind several prophetic expressions that are often misunderstood. What does Daniel mean by the "desire of women" and the "god of fortresses"? How will the Antichrist gain power, and what does it mean for the wise to shine like stars forever? Pastor Brandon explores the Antichrist's opposition to the Messiah, Satan's influence over earthly power, and the importance of understanding Scripture in its proper Jewish and prophetic context. He also examines the dangers of pursuing control instead of trusting God and the eternal rewards promised to those who demonstrate wisdom and lead others to righteousness. Key Scriptures: Daniel 11:36–39, Daniel 12:3, Genesis 3:15, Revelation 13, and Zechariah 4:6. Learn more at https://rockharborchurch.net #Daniel11 #Daniel12 #BibleProphecy #HebrewIdioms #Antichrist
Will Your Faith Accept God’s Plan for Israel?
2026/09/27
What happens when faith encounters silence, discouragement, and an answer that challenges our expectations? In Matthew 15:21–28, a Canaanite mother approaches Israel's Messiah, pleading for her daughter's deliverance. Her response reveals a faith Jesus calls great. Pastor Brandon Holthaus examines four barriers—silence, discouragement, priority, and entitlement—and what they reveal about our trust in God. This woman persisted through difficulty, accepted Israel's priority, and sought mercy without demanding Israel's place. She understood that the Messiah could bless her without taking anything away from His people. Discover why religious privilege cannot substitute for personal faith, why Gentile blessing does not require Israel's displacement, and how to pray confidently while respecting God's promises, purposes, and timing.
Unlocking the Hebraic Idioms of the Bible: Episode 36
2026/09/23
Many biblical passages become clearer when we understand the Hebrew thought, culture, and expressions behind them. In this teaching, Pastor Brandon Holthaus continues his study of Hebraisms by examining key passages from Daniel and showing how their original context helps illuminate biblical prophecy, spiritual warfare, and the believer's walk with Christ. Beginning with Daniel 9, Pastor Brandon explores the meaning of the Messiah being "cut off," its connection to Isaiah 53, and the prophetic significance of the "abomination of desolation." The study also examines the future Temple, the Antichrist, and why Scripture warns against confusing sacred surroundings with genuine spirituality. The teaching then moves into Daniel 10 and the biblical concept of spiritual rulers, territorial powers, and the unseen conflict taking place in the spiritual realm. Pastor Brandon connects these passages with Ephesians to explain how spiritual warfare involves influence, deception, resistance, prayer, and standing firmly in our position in Christ. Ultimately, this study reminds believers that Christianity is not about buildings, religious environments, or outward appearances. The believer is the temple of God, and the real battleground is the heart and mind. Topics include: • Daniel 9 and the Messiah being "cut off" • Isaiah 53 and the suffering servant • The abomination of desolation • The Antichrist and the future Temple • Sacred spaces versus genuine spirituality • Daniel 10 and territorial spiritual powers • Principalities, powers, and spiritual warfare • The believer's position in Christ • Resisting spiritual deception and influence • Prayer, discernment, and standing firm in Ch
Slaying Sacred Cows with the Sword of Truth: Matthew 15:1-20
2026/09/20
In Matthew 15:1–20, Jesus directly confronts the scribes and Pharisees for elevating human traditions above God's commandments. Their religious system looked spiritual, but it produced empty worship, hypocrisy, and disobedience. In this message, Pastor Brandon examines the Pharisaic traditions surrounding ritual handwashing, Corban, and the principle of eruv. These practices show how religious leaders could combine biblical concepts with human reasoning to create legal loopholes that let people appear obedient while avoiding genuine surrender to God. The same danger exists within Christianity today. Believers can misuse grace, Christian liberty, prayer, ministry, personal feelings, and even biblical truth to excuse disobedience. Saying, "God knows my heart," "I prayed about it," or "I'm serving God" cannot replace submission to the clear teaching of Scripture. Jesus called the Pharisees "blind leaders of the blind." When human tradition replaces divine revelation, both the leaders and those following them eventually fall into the ditch. Truth has no sacred cows. Genuine spirituality does not ask, "How can I appear obedient without surrendering?" It asks, "What does God's Word require, and how can I faithfully obey it?" #SlayingSacredCows #TruthOverTradition #Matthew15 #TraditionsOfMen #WordOfGod #ChristianLoopholes #BiblicalTruth #JesusChrist #Pharisees #Corban #ReligiousHypocrisy #ChristianObedience #BibleTeaching #Sermon #RockHarborChurch #BrandonHolthaus
Unlocking the Hebraic Idioms of the Bible: Episode 35
2026/09/16
What does it mean to have a heart of stone or a heart of flesh? In this teaching, Pastor Brandon Holthaus continues his study of Hebrew idioms by examining two powerful expressions found in the book of Ezekiel: "They sit before you as My people" from Ezekiel 33:31 and the contrast between a "heart of stone" and a "heart of flesh" in Ezekiel 36:26. Scripture warns that it is possible to hear God's Word, attend church, study the Bible, and outwardly appear devoted while never allowing biblical truth to transform the way we actually live. Jesus asks, "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do the things which I say?" James gives the same warning when he tells believers to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. Pastor Brandon explores how spiritual hardness develops through repeated resistance to truth, persistent sin, pride, unbelief, idolatry, and an unwillingness to obey. He also explains how fear and other emotions can influence our thinking and decision-making when our minds are not grounded in Scripture. But there is good news: a hardened heart does not have to remain hardened. God desires a heart that is responsive, teachable, and willing to trust Him. Through faith, obedience, and the transforming work of God's Word, believers can grow in spiritual maturity and develop a heart that is increasingly sensitive to His truth. Are we simply hearing the Word of God, or are we allowing it to change us? #Hebraisms #HeartOfStone #HeartOfFlesh #Ezekiel36 #Ezekiel33 #BibleStudy #BiblicalTruth #ChristianLiving #SpiritualGrowth #WordOfGod #BrandonHolthaus #RockHarborChurch
WALKING ON LEVIATHAN | Leaving the Boat to Follow Jesus | Matthew 14:22–33
2026/09/06
In Matthew 14:22–33, Jesus reveals Himself as the divine King who has authority over creation, chaos, and every spiritual power. As the disciples struggle against the storm, Jesus comes to them walking on the sea. The waters that terrify the disciples are already beneath His feet. Against the biblical imagery of the chaotic sea and Leviathan, this passage gives us a powerful picture of Christ's absolute authority over everything that brings fear, disorder, and opposition. But then Jesus calls Peter out of the boat. Faith requires more than recognizing who Jesus is. It requires trusting Him enough to step out when He calls. Peter walks on what should have overwhelmed him as long as his eyes remain fixed on Christ. What looks like chaos beneath our feet is still under the authority of Jesus Christ. What does Genesis 25 truly reveal about Jacob and Esau? The answer becomes much clearer when we understand the Hebrew idioms hidden behind the English translation. In Episode 34 of Unlocking the Hebraic Idioms of the Bible, Pastor Brandon examines phrases such as "mild man," "dwelling in tents," "man of the field," and "skillful hunter." These expressions reveal a dramatically different picture of Jacob and Esau—and help explain why Jacob valued God's covenant while Esau treated his spiritual inheritance as something common. This teaching also explores biblical leadership through the life of a shepherd, Esau's connection with Nimrod, the sale of the birthright, spiritual discernment, immediate gratification versus eternal inheritance, and the meaning of "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." Keys to Being Used by God | Matthew 14:13–23
2026/08/23
In the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus teaches His disciples essential lessons about what it means to be used by God. Ministry begins with compassion, accepts responsibility, develops others, and trusts God rather than human resources. We are not the producers. We are the distributors. God supplies what is needed. Our responsibility is to faithfully use what He places in our hands and allow His provision to flow through us to others. Distorted Perception: When the Heart Changes What the Eyes See | Matthew 13:53–58
2026/08/16
Why is it that people can have the truth standing directly in front of them and still fail to recognize it? In Matthew 13 and 14, we see a powerful principle: the condition of the heart can distort what the eyes see. When Jesus returned to His hometown, the people were astonished by His wisdom and mighty works, yet they could not get past their familiarity with Him. They knew His family. They knew where He had grown up. To them, He was still "the carpenter's son." Instead of allowing the evidence to change their perception of Jesus, they forced Jesus back into the category in which they had always placed Him. Their familiarity became a stumbling block that contributed to their unbelief. Then Matthew takes us immediately to Herod and Herodias. Herod hears about Jesus, but his guilty conscience causes him to conclude that John the Baptist has risen from the dead. Herodias sees John not as God's prophet, but as a threat because John exposed the sin she wanted to protect. Herod himself knows the people regard John as a prophet, yet fear, guilt, political pressure, and the opinions of others influence his actions. Nazareth looked through the lens of familiarity. Herod looked through the lens of guilt and fear. Herodias looked through the lens of rebellion and unrepentant sin. Different lenses—but the same result: distorted perception. In this message, Pastor Brandon Holthaus examines how familiarity, pride, guilt, fear, past experiences, and unrepentant sin can cause us to misinterpret people and even miss what God is doing right in front of us. Matthew 13:53–58
The Final Phases of This Age | Israel, the Gentiles, Judgment, and the Coming Kingdom
2026/08/09
In this message, Pastor Brandon Holthaus concludes Jesus' Mystery Kingdom parables by examining the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, the Dragnet, and the Householder. Discover how these final parables reveal God's ongoing plan for Israel, His calling out of believing Gentiles during the Church Age, the coming Judgment of the Nations, and the establishment of Christ's Messianic Kingdom. This study explains why the Hidden Treasure represents Israel's believing remnant, why the Pearl of Great Price pictures Gentile believers, how the Net points to the future separation of the righteous from the wicked at Christ's return, and how the Householder summarizes God's entire Kingdom program. You'll also see how these parables fit together with Romans 11, Acts 15, Micah 5, Daniel 7, Revelation 17, and Matthew 25 to reveal the prophetic roadmap leading to the Second Coming. If you want to understand God's prophetic plan for Israel, the Church, the Gentile nations, and the Kingdom, this message ties these crucial passages together into one cohesive biblical picture. The Mystery Kingdom Revealed: When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan
2026/07/21
Why didn't Jesus establish the Messianic Kingdom during His first coming? Why did He suddenly begin teaching in parables? And what do the four soils reveal about the condition of our hearts, spiritual maturity, rewards, and the Church Age? In this in-depth study of Matthew 13:1–23, Pastor Brandon Holthaus explains why Israel's rejection of the Messiah marked a major turning point in God's Kingdom Program. Discover how the Mystery Kingdom unfolds between Christ's first and second comings and why the Parable of the Sower is the foundational key to understanding all of Jesus' Kingdom parables. In this message you'll learn: • Why Jesus changed His teaching from plain speech to parables • The four different heart conditions represented by the soils • Why the first soil never germinates while the other three do • The difference between shallow, worldly, and fruitful believers • How Satan attempts to snatch away God's Word • The role of persecution, worldliness, and spiritual maturity • Why receptivity—not intelligence—is the issue • What Jesus meant by "understanding" • The significance of the 30-, 60-, and 100-fold harvest • How the Mystery Kingdom relates to the Seven Churches of Revelation • Why life often doesn't go according to our plans—and how God is still accomplishing His Kingdom purposes The Parable of the Sower reminds us that the power of God's Word never fails. The determining factor is not the quality of the seed, but the condition of the soil. The Test of Assurance Faith Based Living vs Performance Based Living | 1 John 5:6-21
2026/07/17
The sermon argues that believers must base their assurance of salvation on God's testimony rather than personal performance, distinguishing clearly between the security of salvation and the process of discipleship. It critiques theological systems like Arminianism and Lordship Calvinism for blending these categories, which leads to doubt and a works-based mentality. The speaker emphasizes that faith in the historical reality of Jesus Christ provides confidence in prayer and protection against worldly idols. By understanding their positional truth in Christ, believers can overcome spiritual failure without questioning their eternal status. Ultimately, the message calls Christians to reject performance-based religion and rest securely in the finished work of Jesus.
