E121. The Soul Grows by Subtraction — Not Addition —
2026/10/26
The strength that helped you succeed can also become the thing that keeps you stuck. What happens when you stop relying on it for every answer? When we think about personal growth, we usually think about what we need to add. More knowledge. More skills. Another strategy to help us become better at life. But an idea I first heard a couple of years ago has stayed with me: what if some of our most meaningful growth happens through subtraction? In this episode, I explore an insight I associate with Meister Eckhart and connect it to something very practical: the patterns we rely on in leadership, coaching and everyday relationships. Sometimes the thing holding us back is an old story. Sometimes it’s an expectation about who we have to be. And sometimes it’s a strength we’ve become so dependent on that we struggle to respond any other way. Think about the person who is brilliant at taking charge but finds it difficult to receive help. Or someone who connects easily with people but feels uncomfortable speaking honestly when approval isn’t guaranteed. Those qualities can be valuable. The question is whether we’re choosing how to use them, or whether they’ve started choosing for us. I take this idea into behavioural profiling and eDISC, exploring a different kind of stretch for each of the four styles. I also share why being able to appreciate two opposing ways of thinking can open up more possibilities than simply becoming better at what already comes naturally. This conversation moves between philosophy, self-awareness and practical application. If you’re a leader, coach or consultant—or simply curious about the patterns shaping your life—I hope it gives you a useful question to sit with. E120. 5 Steps To Handle Difficult Conversations Without Making Them Worse
2026/10/10
Have you ever found yourself dealing with someone who's so angry, upset or frustrated that nothing you say seems to make a difference? You try to explain the situation. You offer solutions. You attempt to reason with them. And somehow, the conversation becomes even more heated. Here's what's interesting. When emotional intensity is extremely high, our ability to think logically and consider practical solutions can become significantly reduced. Yet our natural instinct is often to do the very thing that isn't helping. We start explaining, reasoning and problem-solving. So how do we navigate these situations differently? Many years ago, while working as a rehabilitation counsellor at Ford Motor Company, I regularly found myself dealing with emotionally charged situations involving injured employees, supervisors, compensation issues and people with very different perspectives. Somehow, I seemed to have a natural ability to diffuse these conversations and help people move towards a practical solution. At the time, I didn't really understand what I was doing. But looking back on those experiences, combined with my understanding of psychology and human behaviour, I've identified five specific steps that can make a remarkable difference. In Episode 120 of Insights, I share this process and explain how you can use it in leadership, coaching, business and your personal relationships. We explore why three simple words can help release emotional pressure, why acknowledgement and validation are two very different things, and why separating what you can control from what you cannot is essential when finding solutions. I also explain what to do when emotions rise again in the middle of an otherwise productive conversation. What's important to understand is that Emotional Fitness isn't about removing difficult emotions from our lives. It's about developing a more constructive relationship with uncertainty and the challenges we encounter. If you're a leader, coach, consultant or someone who wants to navigate difficult conversations with greater clarity, confidence and understanding, I think you'll find this episode particularly useful. Listen to Episode 120 of Insights and discover how five simple steps can change the way you approach emotionally heated situations. E 119. Why the Best Leaders Know When to Be Serious and When to Play
2026/10/03
What if there were only two people you needed to make proud to know you were living your life well? One is eight years old. The other is eighty. In this episode of Insights, I explore a simple idea I call the 8:80 model of psychological balance and why I believe it offers a very different way of thinking about balance, emotional fitness and the way we navigate life. Your eight-year-old represents curiosity, playfulness, adventure and the willingness to fall over, get back up and have another go. Your eighty-year-old sees life through a completely different lens. Perspective. Wisdom. Love. Purpose. The bigger picture. One wants to know if you're still alive inside your life. The other wants to know if you're living it well. And somewhere between these two perspectives sits something far more useful than the mythical idea of perfect work-life balance. In this conversation, we explore why emotional fitness is really about preparedness for change, how adventure eventually becomes wisdom, why love requires more courage than we sometimes realise, and four questions that can bring us back to what truly matters: Have you found your joy? Have you been a joy for others? How well are you loving? And how well are you allowing yourself to be loved? Perhaps the goal isn't to live faster. Perhaps it's to live deeper. And maybe the simplest way to know whether we're heading in the right direction is to ask: Would my eight-year-old and my eighty-year-old be proud of the way I'm living right now? If you’re a coach, leader, business owner or someone navigating change and responsibility, this conversation will give you a practical way to think about psychological balance, resilience and emotional fitness. Listen in and discover how to bring more perspective, courage and joy to the way you lead, live and respond to uncertainty. E118. How to Support Someone Through Crisis Without Making It Worse
2026/08/10
When life breaks something important, the first mistake is trying to think your way out of it. Joe Pane lays out a clearer path through crisis by showing why your mind goes offline first, what emotional responses actually mean, and how to tell where someone is in the process so you can respond in a way that helps. Drawing from a story about a shattered window, Joe explains how crisis hits a vulnerable point and leaves us shaken but still trying to hold things together. From there, he maps the experience into seven phases that reveal what people move through when a relationship ends, a business closes, health changes suddenly, or loss lands without warning. You’ll discover: Why shock and denial are normal, not a sign you are failing How pain, guilt, and the “what if” loop can trap people in unnecessary suffering Why anger, sadness, and loneliness need presence more than advice When the analytical brain comes back online and real support becomes possible How phase six becomes an identity reconstruction process Why acceptance and hope are not about pretending things are fine, but about building forward from a different reality Joe also reframes crisis as a grieving process and introduces the idea that emotional fitness is really preparedness for change. He shows why some moments are not for fixing, but for staying close, listening well, and helping someone survive the early stages until clarity returns. This is especially valuable for leaders, coaches, parents, and anyone supporting people through hard things. If you have ever wondered what to say, when to step in, or why someone cannot “just move on,” this episode gives you a practical lens that will change how you see crisis, and how you show up inside it. E117. Why Comfort Might Be Limiting Your Potential
2026/06/01
What if the very thing we are chasing is quietly keeping us stuck? In this episode of Insights, I explore a simple but powerful thought reversal. Comfort is not the goal. Comfort is the reward. Most of us want more certainty, more safety and more comfort. There is nothing wrong with that. We need a base layer of certainty to function well as human beings. But when comfort becomes the goal of our life, we often begin to organise our decisions around avoiding discomfort rather than moving toward potential. I begin this episode with a quote from George Lucas, who said that we all live in a cage with the door wide open. That idea struck me deeply because I think all of us have some part of our life where the door is open, but we still behave as if we are trapped. I also share the story of the northern pike fish, which was conditioned to believe an invisible wall was still there, even after it had been removed. It became a powerful metaphor for the beliefs we carry. A belief is often nothing more than a convenient assumption, and sometimes we keep obeying assumptions that no longer reflect reality. This episode is about building our future on our potential, not our past. It is about understanding that all meaning in life comes from contrast. We know comfort more deeply when we have moved through discomfort. We experience appreciation more fully when we have done something difficult. We build self trust when we follow through on the things that matter, even when they are uncomfortable. I also share a personal story from my recent half marathon, where the race did not go to plan, and how the thought of simple rewards at the finish helped me move through the discomfort. This is one of the many ways we can transform our relationship with uncertainty, which is at the heart of emotional fitness. Join me in the upcoming Free event https://www.joepane.com.au
116. Why Some People Thrive Under Pressure And Others Shut Down
2026/05/13
In Episode 116 of Insights, I wanted to explore something I believe sits underneath so much of human behaviour, leadership, stress and emotional wellbeing: Our relationship with uncertainty. But this time, I wanted to go deeper. In this conversation, I unpack the five levels of uncertainty through the lens of behavioural profiling and emotional fitness. We explore why some people move toward challenge while others retreat from it, why uncertainty energises some personalities and overwhelms others, and how our behavioural patterns shape the way we respond to pressure, discomfort and change. This episode is not about putting people into boxes. It is about building awareness. Because once we understand that people experience uncertainty differently, we begin to communicate differently, lead differently and relate differently. We stop asking: “What’s wrong with them?” And we start asking: “What might uncertainty feel like through their lens?” I also explore the difference between variety, adventure, challenge, problems and crisis, and how each level changes the emotional flavour of uncertainty. My hope is that this episode helps you better understand yourself, the people around you, and the patterns that emerge when life becomes uncertain. Because emotional fitness is not about avoiding uncertainty. It is about learning how to move through it with greater clarity, flexibility and self awareness. E115. The Five Levels of Uncertainty
2026/04/19
In this episode, I explore a pattern I’ve seen time and time again. Problems don’t really disappear. They evolve. And often, they return in different forms until something within us shifts. I introduce a model I call the five levels of uncertainty, from variety and adventure through to challenge, problems, and crisis. But the real insight sits in the middle. Because there’s a point where we either choose challenge… or we avoid it. And that decision shapes everything that follows. The challenges we choose tend to grow us.The ones we avoid tend to return. If you’ve ever wondered why certain patterns keep showing up in your life, this might give you a different way of looking at it. E114. The Map's Not The Territory
2026/03/29
There’s an idea I’ve come back to time and time again, and it continues to shape how I understand people, relationships, and communication. The Map's Not The Territory. In this episode, I explore what that really means, and why it matters more than most people realise. Because the truth is, we don’t experience life as it is. We experience it through our own interpretation of it. Our own internal map, shaped by our experiences, our beliefs, our emotions, and the meaning we’ve given to moments over time. And the challenge is… we often assume others see the world the same way we do. They don’t. And that’s where so many misunderstandings begin. I unpack how this principle shows up in everyday conversations, why we can communicate clearly and still be misunderstood, and how something as simple as a single word can carry completely different meanings depending on the person hearing it. We also look at a more effective way to approach relationships. Moving beyond “treat others as you’d like to be treated” and into something deeper. Learning how to treat others as they want to be treated, by first understanding the world from their perspective. I introduce the four core behavioural patterns that influence how people think, decide, and communicate, not as labels, but as a starting point for awareness. Because when you begin to understand someone’s map, something shifts. Communication becomes clearer.Connection becomes easier. And influence becomes more natural. This is not just a concept. It’s a living principle that’s playing out in every interaction you have, whether you’re aware of it or not. So as you listen, just reflect on this: Where in your life might you be mistaking your map for the territory? And what might change if you became just a little more curious about someone else’s? 2026/02/17
What if upgrading your life starts with recognizing the patterns shaping it? Join me at the Free 3-part Emotional Fitness Bootcamp https://www.joepane.com.au/emotional-fitness-bootcamp For the last two decades, I’ve been fascinated by patterns. The patterns in us, the patterns in others, and the invisible codes that quietly shape our behaviour. In this episode, I explore why pattern recognition is one of the most crucial skills we can develop if we want to become emotionally fit. Because without the ability to notice and decode patterns, it’s almost impossible to transform our relationship with uncertainty. I introduce the idea of your “core behavioural operating system” and invite you to think about your current life stage as a version upgrade. What version are you running? What aspects of you no longer serve the next upgrade? And what strengths do you want to bring forward? We look at how the questions we ask ourselves determine what we focus on, and how focus shapes our experience. I also share a practical example of how understanding the root of anger as constriction can help us decode recurring patterns in our lives. This episode is an invitation to consciously participate in your own upgrade rather than waiting for time to do it for you. Join me for the upcoming events https://www.joepane.com.au
E 112. The ability to get what you want out of life
2026/01/23
I want to explore a definition of intelligence that genuinely changed the way I see life. Naval Ravikant once described intelligence as the ability to get what you want out of life. When I first sat with that idea, I realised how much it challenges the way most of us think about growth, success, and fulfilment. In this episode, I reflect on why so many capable people feel stuck, why clarity so often arrives after action rather than before it, and how our relationship with uncertainty quietly determines the direction of our lives. We explore emotional fitness as the capacity to navigate challenge without losing direction, why fear is not a signal to stop but a signal to begin, and how a surprisingly small percentage of our actions can create disproportionate results when we focus on the right things. This is a conversation about curiosity, courage, and learning to work with uncertainty rather than waiting for it to disappear. E110. How To Make Your Mind Stronger Than Your Emotions When the Going Gets Tough
2025/08/17
We all experience the ebbs and flows of life. One moment, everything’s smooth. The next, we’re caught in overwhelm or uncertainty. And in those moments, something unexpected happens: our emotions often take the wheel. In this episode, I share a different approach. A thought reversal. What if the answer isn’t to feel more, but to focus better? There’s nothing wrong with emotion. But when things get tough, it’s the strength of our focus that determines how we respond. In Episode 110, I offer four key focus points you can use in any difficult moment: ✅ Focus on what you can control ✅ Focus on what you have ✅ Focus on others ✅ Focus on the present/future This is a conversation about emotional fitness — not perfection. And I hope it meets you wherever you are in your journey. Thanks for listening.
