Ep 106 | The Motivation Equation: Why We Get Stuck
2026/05/05
Hey Joy Seekers! Welcome to the She Finds Joy Podcast! Today’s episode serves up exactly what you crave: actionable insight, real-life examples, and life/love leadership wisdom from Frederick Buskey! With a rich background, 17 years in K-12 teaching and leadership, international experience, and whole-program redesigns under his belt, Frederick Buskey delivers practical frameworks that make motivation not just understandable but DO-ABLE. If you’ve ever felt stuck, judged yourself harshly for “failing” to change a habit, or wondered why some goals just don’t stick, this episode will flip your whole approach.
Ready to rewire motivation in your work, parenting, or health? Hit play, take notes, and get curious because a more compassionate, empowered you STARTS HERE!
In This Episode:
Motivation, Demystified: What IS motivation, really? Frederick Buskey guides us to a clear, actionable definition. Motivation as your willingness and ability to do the thing you want (or need) to do. No more fluffy buzzwords, just a clean way to analyze what’s blocking your goals.
The Three Faces of Motivation
– Task Face: Will you do the one-off, specific task (like making a healthy dinner tonight)?
– Skill Face: Can you implement something new you’ve learned (like a new teaching practice or recipe)?
– Behavior Face: The toughest will you sustain the change and embed a new behavior into your life? (Frederick Buskey says this is where most of us trip up!)
The Motivation Equation: Motivation = Value ÷ Effort (How much do you value the outcome, and how hard does it feel right now?)
Make It Work for You: Use the equation to figure out WHY you or someone else are stuck. Are you overestimating effort? Underestimating immediate value? Or caught by competing values (hello, ‘supermom’ guilt vs. self-care!)? This approach swaps JUDGMENT for CURIOSITY, setting you up for progress, not shame-dumping.
Why Context Matters: Your motivation is unique not a character flaw! Frederick Buskey discusses how social context, personal narratives (“I should take care of everyone else first”), and even biology (hello, brains addicted to instant feedback!) all shape what works.
Power Moves:
Trade Judgment for Curiosity: Instead of berating yourself for missing the gym, ask: “Where’s the friction? How can I lower it?”
Engineer Your Environment: Remove temptations, add easy cues. (Put the phone in another room! Prep the meals on Sunday! Pack your backpack in advance!
Gamify Your Day: Like Frederick Buskey, set a winnable bar ten minutes of yoga, or just drive to the gym. Tiny wins build momentum!
Get Clear on Priorities: Every yes is a no to something else. Distinguish between urgent tasks and lasting priorities (especially for school leaders and busy parents!).
Mic-Drop Quotes:
“We put a lot of judgment when we don’t do the thing. The motivation equation helps us stop judging and get curious.”
“A little bit of success builds momentum. Set the bar low, win, and it will grow from there.”
“If I don’t buy the Froot Loops in the store, I only have to say no once. But if I bring them home, I have to say no every day.”
“Judgment leads to conflict. Curiosity leads to collaboration.”
Listener Challenge:
👉 Pick one area (health, family, work) and ask yourself:
What’s more valuable to me than this old habit?
Where can I reduce friction to make the right choice easier?
👉 Take one “tiny win” action THIS WEEK can you meal-prep, put your phone out of sight at night, or pre-pack for tomorrow’s workout?

Ep 105 | The Affirmation Revolution: Empowering Kids (and Teachers) to Believe Bigger
2026/04/21
Hey Joy Seekers! Welcome to another episode of the She Finds Joy Podcast, a sacred space where we get real about living joyful, purpose-filled lives, even in the middle of chaos. Today, I have an absolute soul-fire guest joining me: Hannah Gellar, a 25-year-old first grade teacher who’s flipping the script on teaching, mindset, and the power of affirmations.
Ever feel bombarded by stories of teacher burnout, pressure, and negativity around education? Or maybe you just wonder “Can joy still exist in these classrooms, with all the challenges teachers face?” Listen in because Hannah is living proof that it absolutely CAN, and she's making magic happen every single day with her students.
This fresh, uplifting episode will crack open your view of what’s possible in tough environments, whether you’re a teacher, parent, or anyone rewriting your own narrative with joy at the center.
In This Episode:
Following the Call: Hear how Hannah navigated doubts, noise, and outside pressures to rediscover her earliest calling to teach and why purpose trumps negativity, every single time.
Power of Affirmations: Go behind the scenes of Hannah's daily affirmation rituals with her first graders, learn the exact affirmations she chants (“I’m awesome. I’m smart. I can do hard things!”), and hear how these simple words sparked a ripple effect of confidence, kindness, and classroom community.
Kids That Uplift Each Other: Real stories of tiny humans lifting struggling classmates up with affirmation power (“It’s okay to make mistakes. You can do hard things.”). If you need a goosebumps moment, THIS is it
Joy As an Act of Rebellion: Why choosing joy in teaching, again and again, is a radical act, and how Hannah navigates social media’s burnout narratives by intentionally writing her OWN story.
Growth Mindset in Action: How believing in kids’ potential (and seeing them as leaders, now, not “someday”) transforms what’s possible for every learner.
Building Family Joy: My own practice of posting affirmations for my son as a daily dose of self-belief (yes, even behind the toilet!) and why every family, classroom, or individual can personalize this practice.
Power Moves:
Write Your Own Story: Whether you’re teaching, parenting, or changing careers, ask, “What story do I want to tell about my journey?” and choose your narrative daily.
Morning Affirmations: Try Hannah's affirmation ritual alone or with your kids: “I’m awesome. I’m loved. I can do hard things.”
Spread It Forward: Next time you see someone struggling, remind them with a loving affirmation (kids, partners, friends, it’s contagious!).
Celebrate Progress: Remember, you’re not something “yet” add “yet” to every limitation in your head. Flip “I can’t” to “I can’t YET.”
Get Honest About Mindset: Notice are you letting old negativity dictate your experience, or will you try on a new lens of joy and possibility?
Mic-Drop Quotes:
“We’re not just instilling confidence in ourselves, but in each other. That’s when the domino effect begins.”
“You get to write your teaching story. Everyone’s opinion of education is their truth, but it doesn’t have to be yours.”
“Before a child can learn, they must feel safe and loved. Affirmation is how we download new belief systems for kids AND adults.”
Listener Challenge:
👉 Whether you parent, teach, or simply live with intention: pick one affirmation from today’s show and say it out loud every morning for a week.
👉 Share the practice with a child, partner, or friend and notice the ripple!

2026/04/07
Hey Joy Seekers! Welcome to another zest-brimming episode of the She Finds Joy Podcast, your personal invitation to put play, adventure, and laughter back on your life’s agenda. This week, I threw my “one-woman show” rule out the window (because sometimes you meet someone who makes rule-breaking wildly worth it). Enter the radiant Treena Innes, “Life Fun Expert,” world traveler, and unapologetic joy seeker, whose energy is downright contagious!
If you’ve ever felt like the spark’s gone out, you don’t even know how to have fun anymore or you’re “judged” for prioritizing joy (hello, #momguilt), this episode is for you. We’re talking about breaking out of ruts, busting through guilt, and why actually writing down your FUN goals can flip your day-to-day upside down (in the best way).
In This Episode:
- The Lost Art of Fun: Are you living life on autopilot, or actually enjoying it? We dig into why so many women, especially high achievers and supermoms, have lost touch with their playful side, and how that can change, starting now.
- Travel as a Fun Formula: Hear Treena Innes’s wild adventures across 55+ countries, the magic of dirty backpacks, and how travel, even the “off-the-beaten-path” kind can supercharge your life and relationships
- Why Guilt, Judgment, & Fear Steal Our Joy: From “I don’t know how to have fun anymore” to worrying what people will think if you wear a moomoo to a Mrs. Roper party, discover the emotional blockers keeping you stuck
- Real Life, Real Strategies: From “fun lists” to micro-bucket lists, Treena Innes shares how making FUN a tangible goal transformed her life (and why having it on a sticky note is a power move)
- How to Re-Train For Fun (Seriously!): Listen in as we break down why “the fun habit” is RELEARNABLE at any age, and three simple ways to jumpstart your playful side right now.
Power Moves:
- Write a “fun list” or micro-bucket list: Stick it on your fridge, inside your closet, or next to your coffee pot. If you write it, you’re 40% more likely to actually DO it!
- Swap “Why?” for “Why not?”: If your inner critic starts arguing, just say YES before your brain talks you out of fun.
- End the day with a “Fire in the Belly” check: Replay your day and ask, “What lit me up? What drained me?” Do more of the former, ruthlessly ditch the latter.
- Break the guilt-cycle: Remember, prioritizing your joy is leadership. Model it for your kids, your partner, your friends.
- Push past judgment: Try the moomoo, the mystery party, the trip you “don’t know how to plan.” (And if you need a travel buddy, let’s make a She Finds Joy global adventure happen!)
Mic-Drop Quotes:
“Fun is retrainable. It’s just a habit you need to practice again!”
“Why not? Don’t give yourself more than two seconds to talk yourself out of it.”
“It doesn’t have to cost a ton, look perfect, or feel comfortable. Try it ON anyway.”
Listener Challenge:
👉 Who are you letting call the shots? Guilt, fear, or joy?
👉 This week, pick *one* thing from your fun list (big or small) and say YES, before your brain says, “Why?”

Ep 102 | Are You Playing the "What If Game" with Happiness?
2026/03/10
Hey Joy-Seekers!
Welcome to Episode 102 of the She Finds Joy Podcast, your space for radical insight, real talk, and the science (and soul) of true happiness. Today, Kim Strobel uncovers the sneaky “what if” game that keeps us forever chasing joy in the next job, the next house, the next goal… and why that happiness finish line always moves just out of reach.
If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “I’ll finally be happy when I get the promotion/lose the weight/buy the dream house,” this episode is your invitation to stop the cycle. Kim Strobel brings research, personal stories, and a hefty dose of compassion to help you see why more money, a different body, or the latest upgrade isn’t the happiness answer—and what actually is.
In This Episode:
The “What If” Trap: Why tying happiness to future achievements never satisfies—and how your brain is wired to always want more.
Hedonic Adaptation, Explained: Discover the science behind why salary increases, bigger homes, and new cars only bring fleeting joy.
Money and Happiness: Yes, financial security matters—but once your basic needs are met, more zeros don’t equal more happiness, even if your mind tells you otherwise.
The Weight Loss Paradox: What a major four-year study of nearly 2,000 people really taught us about weight loss, dieting, and long-term mood.
Chasing Perfection (Botox Version!): Kim Strobel shares her own story about playing catch-up with cosmetic fixes and why new “flaws” always seem to appear.
Gratitude, Not Goalposts: How deep appreciation for what you already have resets your happiness baseline—and why it’s the daily antidote to the “never enough” mindset.
Power Moves:
Notice Your “When/Then” Thoughts: Where are you telling yourself you’ll be happier “when…”? Write them down—even the sneaky ones!
Reframe Your Goals: Set goals for FUN and fulfillment, not as happiness lifelines. Let go of “I’ll only be happy if I achieve x.”
Practice Daily Appreciation: Find awe in your current surroundings—big house or small, old car or new. Train your brain to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Experiment With Letting Go: Skip the extreme dieting, the relentless upgrades. Ask yourself: “Am I chasing happiness—or running from discomfort?”
Tune in Next Time: Get ready for actionable “happiness habits” to start boosting your baseline joy—no matter your circumstances.
Mic-Drop Quotes:
“We play this what-if game with happiness all the time... but the finish line always moves.”
“Once you hit a certain threshold, there really isn’t a correlation between money and happiness.”
“Every time I pull in my driveway, I have deep appreciation for this home… but I don’t know that I’m any happier than I was in my 986-square-foot house.”
“Our brain will always move the goalpost, and we’ll always want to change what that goal is in order to make us happier.”
Listener Challenge:

2025/12/30
Welcome to Episode 97 of She Finds Joy Podcast, your go-to corner for unapologetic transformation, next-level mindset, and big bold moves. This week, Kim is taking you deeper into the real magic behind changing your life: reprogramming your subconscious to finally break free and step into your most powerful self.
Tired of feeling like you’re stuck on repeat with old patterns, money blocks, or self-doubt? Buckle up! In this episode, Kim demystifies the conscious vs. subconscious mind and shows you how those invisible beliefs (yep, the ones from way back when) might be running the show—and how you can rewrite the whole story.
In This Episode:
Conscious vs. Subconscious Mind: Why the tiny tip of your mental iceberg (your conscious mind) isn’t driving the ship and how your hidden programming sets your limits.
Where Your Beliefs Come From: Discover how family stories, childhood experiences, and cultural “truths” burrow into your subconscious and shape your reality.
Trauma, Triggers & Emotional Regulation: Why your body remembers what your mind forgets…and how that influences your reactions, relationships, and resilience.
The Power of Belief: Real-life stories of beliefs creating results (or holding you back), from catching colds by “expectation,” to upper-limiting your success.
Magnetic Mindset: What separates the person who wins at life from the one stuck in fear? It's all about how you’re “magnetized” for confidence, abundance, and opportunities.
Your Next-Level Practice: How to start feeding your conscious mind new, empowering beliefs and reprogram that old subconscious tape.
Strobel Power Moves:
Sticky Notes That Change Your Life: TryKim’s trick—write “You deserve this!” and put it where you see it every day.
Audit Your Subconscious Stories: Are you replaying old “I’m not enough,” “I can’t risk it,” or “Success isn’t for people like me” tapes? Time to hit eject!
Swap Fear for Faith: Notice when “What if I fail?” creeps in. Flip the script: “What if I soar?”
Visualize Your Subconscious: Picture that dark-room “tape player” and hit record on new, high-vibe beliefs—on repeat.
Magnetize Your Mindset: Decide what you want to attract (abundance, joy, courage) and actively align your thoughts and feelings to that frequency.
Mic-Drop Moments:
“Your subconscious is the dark room where beliefs take shape—image by image—whether you realize it or not.”
“You don’t have to acquire more power or worth. It's already in you. You just have to start applying it.”
“There are two types of people: the magnetized, who expect to win, and the demagnetized, full of doubt and fear. Which will you choose?”

Ep 95 | It's Okay Not to Feel Okay
2025/12/02
Hey friends! In this vulnerable, honest episode of She Finds Joy, I’m inviting you into a raw conversation that we don’t have nearly enough—about those days when things just aren’t okay.
I showed up for this recording in my running clothes, with no makeup and messy hair, because it felt important that you see the real, unfiltered Kim Strobel. The truth is, behind the social media highlight reels and the smiles, every single one of us has times when life feels heavy, we feel stuck, and joy feels far away.
Key Topics Covered:
It’s Okay to Not Feel Okay: Let’s break the silence around those moments when your outside life looks shiny, but inside, you’re struggling. I open up about my own experience—how I’ve been feeling off lately, no matter how hard I hustle or strive. And I promise you: it’s okay to have these feelings. You are not failing just because you’re in a tough season.
Seasonal Shifts and Emotional Realness: I share why fall always feels hard for me, even though there’s so much to love about it. Is it the shift from the busy energy of summer into quieter days? Is it saying goodbye to the high of speaking on stages and trading it for more time alone in my office? Just know, it’s normal to feel a little lost or off-track when the seasons of life change.
Social Media vs. Real Life: On my own Facebook page, I share both the highlights and the struggles. It’s easy to scroll and feel like everyone else has it all together, but I want you to remember—there’s so much more happening behind the scenes in everyone’s life than you see online.
Giving Yourself Permission to Pause: Sometimes, after we’ve tried everything to push forward, the wisest thing we can do is pause. Allow yourself to sit in the discomfort. Resist the urge to “fix” everything right away. Maybe it’s a time of preparation, a space for something new to grow.
The Wisdom of My Grandmother: My grandma—the happiest person I’ve known—would order dessert first and get her hair done to lift her mood. Maybe we need to take a cue from her and find the small, nurturing ways to care for ourselves while we wait for the light to return.
You Are Not Alone: I name the hard realities I’m moving through right now, acknowledging it’s tough. Comparison creeps in, and it often feels like others are further ahead. But you are not broken, and you are not less than.
Action Steps:
Be gentle with yourself. Give yourself permission to feel the way you do right now.
Share your feelings with someone you trust—even if you can’t fix them, you don’t have to carry them alone.
Find one small way to care for yourself today—a walk, music, dessert first, or just pausing.
Remind yourself: “I don’t have to have it all figured out yet.”
Listen to the song “It’s Okay” by Nightbird—the message is powerful and healing.
Notable Quotes:
“You’re not failing, even though it feels like you’re behind everyone else.”
“Maybe you don’t always have to be fixing your life—sometimes it’s okay to just be where you are.”
“You are not alone in these feelings—so many of us feel the same way sometimes.”
“If you need inspiration, remember Nightbird’s song: It’s Okay.”
Listener Challenge:
Take a moment and ask yourself: Where in your life do you feel ‘behind’ or ‘not enough’? What’s ONE small act of kindness you can offer yourself today?
Share your story! Tag @KimStrobelJoy on Instagram—I’d love to hear about the moments when you let yourself not be okay, and what helps you through.

Ep 94 | Growth Mindset (Part 2) Rewriting the Beliefs That Hold You Back
2025/11/18
Hey friends! In this heartfelt, game-changing episode of She Finds Joy. I’m pulling back the curtain on the beliefs that shape every single part of our lives. So many of us feel stuck—not because we aren’t capable, but because we’ve unconsciously adopted old stories about who we are and what we can achieve. Today, we’re diving into the science and soul of how you can start to rewrite those beliefs and reclaim your personal agency—and your joy!
Key Topics Covered:
The Power Beneath the Surface: I break down how 95% of our decisions and behaviors stem from the subconscious beliefs we picked up as young as six years old. Think of your mind like an iceberg—your conscious thoughts are just the tip, while everything else runs below the waterline, quietly directing your life.
Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset: Let’s talk about what happens when you believe your talents and intelligence are set in stone versus choosing the power of “yet.” I share real-life examples from education, the workplace, and my own life—because no one was born with a perfect mindset! Together, we explore how growth mindset people embrace challenges, persist through obstacles, and use feedback as fuel.
Beliefs Change Everything (Even Your Body!): I reveal the surprising results of a study from Germany showing how powerful our beliefs are—men who believed they’d had knee surgery healed... even when some never actually received it! This is a jaw-dropping demonstration of how much our thoughts shape our reality.
How You Can Shift Your Beliefs: Here’s the good news: you aren’t stuck with the stories you inherited! I talk about the importance of feeding your brain new, empowering information. Whether it’s books, podcasts, mentoring, or simply surrounding yourself with positive influences, change is possible when you act on fresh knowledge.
Bringing Growth Mindset to Your Workplace and Life: If you’re seeing burnout or resistance in your team, school, or organization, you’re not alone. I explain why embracing challenge and feedback is essential—for both personal transformation and business success.
Action Steps:
Notice those old, limiting stories you tell yourself—and challenge them!
Feed your mind new beliefs: read, listen, and seek out people who spark growth.
Take one small action based on what you learn—don’t just think, do!
Embrace challenges, and remind yourself: “I can’t do this... yet!”
If your colleagues or team are stuck, share this episode and start a conversation about mindset.
Notable Quotes:
“Our mindset is only as strong as the beliefs that sit underneath it.”
“You have the ability to extract old belief systems and download new ones.”
“It’s not knowledge that is power—it’s acting on the knowledge that is power.”
“When we change our belief systems, we change our lives.”
Listener Challenge:
I want you to get really honest with yourself:
Where in your life are you showing up as that six-year-old version who believes ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘This isn’t possible for me’?
What’s one belief you want to rewrite?
Share what you’re shifting on social media and tag @KimStrobelJoy—I’d love to celebrate your progress!

Ep 93 | Growth Mindset (Part 1) From Fixed to Growth
2025/11/04
In this empowering episode of "She Finds Joy," Kim dives deep into the transformative differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Drawing from decades of brain research and her personal journey, Kim shares stories of triumph over self-doubt, resistance, and adversity, revealing how embracing growth allows us to unlock our fullest potential and invite more joy into our lives.
Key Topics Covered:
Understanding Fixed vs. Growth Mindset: Kim breaks down the characteristics of fixed and growth mindsets, using relatable examples from education, the workplace, and her own life. She explains how statements like “I’m just not good at this” keep us boxed in, while adopting the power of “yet” signals openness to learning and development.
The Science Behind Growth: Citing research by Dr. Carol Dweck and Sean Achor, Kim highlights how our brains are designed to adapt and grow, meaning most of us are only using a fraction of our true capacity. She dispels myths about talent and intelligence, encouraging listeners to challenge the belief that their skills are set in stone.
Personal Stories of Growth: From marathons to keynote speaking, Kim shares how she overcame initial failures and fear with perseverance and belief. Her story—from a trembling teenager in speech class to a confident speaker before thousands—embodies the growth mindset in action.
Overcoming Resistance in Organizations: Through workplace anecdotes, Kim discusses change management and the resistance to new challenges, demonstrating how shifting perspective can empower teams to embrace productive struggle and innovation.
Productive Struggle and Resilience: Using the metaphor of a butterfly fighting its way out of a cocoon, Kim illustrates the necessity of struggle for true growth. She champions embracing difficulties as opportunities to strengthen resilience and confidence.
Action Steps:
Notice where a fixed mindset shows up in your language: swap “I can’t” for “I can’t yet.”
Challenge yourself or your team to lean into challenges, reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth.
Celebrate wins and progress, even when it feels uncomfortable or hard.
Share the episode with someone who may be struggling to believe in their potential.
Notable Quotes:
“Inside every adversity lies the seed of something greater.”
“You're never stuck. It's your brain that tricks you into thinking you don't have this ability. But your brain and your body are built to grow.”
“When we learn to prioritize our happiness and well-being, we elevate every single area of our lives.”
“You have 90% potential left—you are deserving of joy and happiness.”
Listener Challenge:
Kim invites you to reflect on your own mindset:
Where have you let a fixed mindset limit you?
What’s one area where you can begin saying “I don’t know this yet” and embrace the journey of learning?

Ep 92 | The Ripple Effect: One Small Act of Kindness
2025/10/15
In this uplifting episode, Kim Strobel shares a moving real-life encounter that beautifully illustrates how a single act of kindness can ripple out and change lives—starting with a meaningful conversation in her own backyard. Through the story of Cameron, a hardworking young father and dedicated service provider, Kim reveals how taking a few moments to connect, acknowledge, and uplift someone can foster deep connection and spark a brighter outlook—for both giver and receiver.
What’s in this episode:
The extraordinary impact of recognizing and uplifting the everyday people who cross our paths—for example, the service technician, cashier, or mail carrier
Kim’s firsthand account of meeting Cameron, an inspiring young father, and how their honest exchange opened doors for empathy and encouragement
The science behind our brain’s natural “negative bias” and how small acts of kindness can help retrain our minds for positivity and joy
How sharing someone’s story (even on social media) can create a wave of encouragement—sometimes making someone’s whole week or year
Simple, research-backed habits for cultivating daily happiness, drawn from Kim’s own teachings and latest book, “Teach Happy: Small Steps to Big Joy”
Kim challenges listeners to notice the “Camerons” in their lives—those whose stories often go unheard—and to take that extra moment to see, value, and encourage them. By sharing her experience and Cameron’s grateful response, Kim demonstrates that kindness is not only transformative for the receiver, but deeply rewarding for the giver.
Key Takeaways:
Pausing to make someone feel seen, heard, and valued can lift both your spirits and theirs—sometimes in ways you never expect.
Our brains may be wired for negativity, but cultivating daily acts of kindness can reprogram us for positivity and fulfillment.
Sharing and celebrating the hard work and resilience of others (even through a simple Facebook post!) can multiply hope in unexpected ways.
Practicing random acts of kindness is one of the top habits that improve overall happiness and well-being—for both giver and receiver.
“So please share this episode with a friend… and go out and practice your own random acts of kindness.” — Kim Strobel
