Description

You know that feeling the morning after—when the high of achievement wears off and you're left wondering why it never feels like enough? That's the perfection hangover. We're a community of recovering perfectionists who've realized that the pursuit of flawless is a rigged game. The goalposts always move. The to-do list never ends. And somewhere along the way, we forgot that we're human beings, not human doings. Hosted by writer and creator, Melissa Blevins, Perfection Hangover isn't about lowering your standards or abandoning your ambitions. It's about redirecting all that energy you've been pouring into impossible standards toward something that actually matters: building a life you don't need to escape from. We tackle the messy middle ground between "crushing it" and burnout. Between ambition and anxiety. Between growth and grace. This is for the high-achievers, the overthinkers, the chronic self-improvers who are ready to stop optimizing and start living. No toxic positivity. No quick fixes. Just honest conversations about what it takes to achieve without destroying yourself in the process.

019: Why Do I Still Feel Like I Have Something to Prove?
2026/10/27
For years, I wrote $100,000 on my vision board. When I finally hit six figures, with no college degree, in a tech job my own brother warned me might pay $80K, I thought the proving would finally stop. It didn’t. It just moved to a new building and got a Slack login. In this episode, I share how I became the “scrappy little client success manager” who commented on everything, why my boss had to tell me I didn’t need to, and how it all traces back to growing up with little to no money, being compared to a rock star older brother, and the eldest-daughter drive to prove I’d made it out. We talk about: Why hitting your big goal doesn’t quiet the need to prove yourself The difference between doing the work and auditioning for your seat every single day How to recognize the proof that’s already shown up, even when you still feel like you’ll get found out A simple exercise for this week: write down what people have already trusted you with, and pull out that list the next time you feel the itch to prove yourself If you’ve got your own vision board number, an older sibling everyone compared you to, or that feeling of having to earn your spot over and over, this one’s for you. 018: From Poverty to Six Figures: Debunking "Women Like Me Don't Live Like That"
2026/10/19
Have you ever wanted something more for your life, then thought, “Women like me don’t live like that”? I grew up poor in a blended family of nine in a three-bedroom trailer. I went from making $7.93 an hour as a bank teller to building a six-figure career in tech without a college degree—but I almost didn’t apply for the job that opened that door. In this episode, I share that story, the experience I hadn’t given myself credit for, and what I’m still figuring out about emotional spending, financial security, and feeling like I have something to prove. If you grew up with little money, little support, or both, we’re talking about how those beginnings can influence what you believe is possible—and how to give yourself a chance to find out. Perfection Hangover Trailer
2026/10/17
Have you ever wondered if there’s more to your life, then caught yourself thinking, “Women like me don’t live like that”? I’m Melissa Blevins. I grew up poor in a blended family of nine in a three-bedroom trailer. I went from earning $7.93 an hour as a bank teller to building a six-figure career in tech without a college degree. And I still struggle with feeling like I have something to prove. Perfection Hangover is for the woman who grew up with little money, little support, or both—and still carries those experiences into her decisions, relationships, and beliefs about what’s possible. Through honest stories about money, work, motherhood, relationships, and faith, we’ll explore the perfectionism patterns that follow us into adulthood and practice making different choices. Start discovering your pattern with the free Perfection Hangover Archetype Quiz at perfectionhangover.com/quiz.
017: I Can Do It Myself: When Your Perfectionism Gets in the Way of Letting Others Help
2026/10/11
You ask for help, then catch yourself saying, “Never mind. I’ll do it.” Sound familiar? In this episode, Melissa Blevins explores how perfectionism can make it hard to let others contribute at home and at work. We’re talking about the difference between something being wrong and simply being different—and how to give useful feedback without taking the whole job back. Learn one small way to practice accepting help while keeping reasonable expectations. Want to recognize your own perfectionism patterns? Take the Archetype Quiz: ARCHETYPE QUIZ
016: When Everyone Thinks You Can Handle It
2026/10/04
Have you ever said yes while already knowing you didn’t have the energy to follow through? In this episode, I share how I accepted a volunteer leadership role at my church while juggling work, kids, and a difficult home life. I knew I didn’t want to take it on, but I worried about what people would think if I declined—especially in a community where I already struggled to feel like I belonged. We’re talking about people-pleasing, perfectionism, and the pressure to be the woman everyone can count on. You’ll hear practical ways to pause before committing, consider the full cost of a yes, and communicate your limits without explaining every private detail of your life. One question to take with you: “If I knew these people would still value me after I said no, would I say yes?” Ready to explore your own patterns? 015: Waiting to Be Finished Before You Let Yourself Be Seen
2026/09/27
What if you’re waiting to feel completely healed, confident, or qualified before you let yourself be seen?   In this episode, I’m sharing how that pattern shows up in my life—from posting the highlight reel after divorce while privately struggling, to moving between a book, a keynote, and this podcast without consistently sharing the work I care about.   I’m also admitting something uncomfortable: posting less hasn’t made my desire for validation disappear.   We’ll explore how to recognize when preparation becomes delay, share honestly while keeping parts of your life private, and take one useful step while you’re still growing.   Finish this sentence with me: “I keep waiting until I’m _____ before I let myself _____.”
014 I Didn’t Know I Had Daddy Issues
2026/08/29
What if the patterns you've spent years trying to change aren't random at all? I didn't know I had a father wound. I knew my dad wasn't around much growing up. I knew I'd spent years looking for love in the wrong places. I knew I'd become fiercely independent, highly capable, and really good at being the one who could handle everything. What I didn't know was how connected those things might be. In this episode of Perfection Hangover, I'm sharing a realization that surfaced while writing my book: how a little girl who desperately wanted her father to choose her became a woman who chased being chosen through men, relationships, achievement, perfectionism, fixing, and proving. We talk about absent fathers, “daddy issues,” grooming, unhealthy relationships, rock bottom, and the difference between blaming our past and finally understanding what it taught us to believe about ourselves. I'm not telling this story because I have it all figured out. I'm telling it because, for the first time, the pieces are clicking. And if you've ever wondered why you work so hard to be successful, useful, needed, strong—or impossible to leave—this conversation might connect a few pieces for you, too. ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of childhood physical abuse, sexual assault of a minor, domestic violence, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and a suicide attempt. 013 Why We Haven't Introduced Our Kids After 2 Years of Dating
2026/07/29
Two and a half years. A real, committed, serious relationship. And our kids have never met. Not because we're not ready. Because when you're co-parenting with someone who is high conflict, introducing the person you love isn't a milestone — it's a target. In this episode, I'm getting honest about what it actually looks like to date someone with kids when the other parent is still at war. The compartmentalized double life. The two years of being kept invisible — not out of shame, but out of protection. The four-and-a-half-hour meeting with his ex-wife that left me with real hope — and the weeks that followed that took it all away. I also take it back to where I started: growing up in a blended family where my mom's answer to everything was rip the Band-Aid. New relationship, new kids, new family — fast. And why I refuse to do it that way. If you're navigating a high-conflict co-parenting situation, loving someone whose ex makes peace feel impossible, or just sitting in the painful in-between wondering if it ever gets easier — this episode is for you. Healing isn't linear. And neither is this.
012 You're Not "Too Much" - You're Just Exhausted
2026/06/01
Have you ever been told you’re “too loud,” “too intense,” or “too much”? As high-capacity women, we learn early on to weaponize our drive. We channel that “too muchness” into our careers, our businesses, and our to-do lists. We become the Engine—the one who keeps everyone else’s world turning without dropping a single ball. On paper, you are crushing it. But when the laptop closes and the performance mask comes off, what is left? In this episode, we are pulling back the curtain on the silent epidemic facing high-achieving women: the structural exhaustion of the Perfection Hangover. We’re diving deep into the exact moment we trade our authentic power for corporate validation, and the heavy tax our families pay for our burnout. If you are tired of bringing your "A-Game" to an inbox that will never be empty, and handing the "leftovers" of your time, patience, and energy to your kids and yourself... this conversation is your permission slip to stop performing. Inside this episode, we discuss: The Validation Loop: Why it’s easier to chase "claps" from a company that would replace you tomorrow than it is to sit in the quiet spaces of your own home. The "Ghost Mom" Syndrome: How working from home allows us to be physically present but emotionally a thousand miles away from our kids. The Energy Audit: How to spot the "energy thieves" in your social circle who require you to defend your values instead of being loved for them. The 5-Minute Pivot: A tactical, zero-friction strategy to shed the "Work Mask" before you walk through your front door. Grab a hot drink, lock the bathroom door if you have to, and let’s talk about how to stop giving your prime rib to the world and your scraps to the people who actually matter.
011 Part 2: Why My PIP Felt So Much Bigger Than Work
2026/04/26
In this episode, I share why my performance improvement plan at work felt so much heavier than a simple review. It pressed on old wounds from childhood, rock‑bottom moments, and a lifetime of feeling like I was always on “emotional probation.” If you’ve ever had work feedback trigger way more shame than makes sense, this conversation will help you see the deeper story underneath—and start to loosen its grip. ⚠️ CONTENT WARNING: This episode contains discussions of childhood physical abuse, sexual assault of a minor, domestic violence, and a suicide attempt. Please prioritize your mental health and listen when you feel emotionally prepared. 010 From PIP to Promotion: The Brutal Price of Quick Success
2026/04/18
How I went from “one step from fired” to promoted in six months—and why it almost cost me everything that mattered. In this episode of Perfection Hangover, I share the real story of how I went from a performance improvement plan at work to a promotion in just six months—and the brutal price I paid for that quick success. I’ll take you behind the scenes of my divorce, selling the house I thought I’d keep forever, a failed move into sales, and the moment I was told I had 90 days to “get it together” or lose my job. Then I’ll tell you how I turned things around, got promoted, and quietly burned myself out trying to be the fixer for everyone. If you’ve ever looked like you were winning on paper while your nervous system, family, and purpose were quietly on fire, this one’s for you.
009 High Capacity, Not High Functioning: Redefining What it Means to be "Strong"
2026/04/12
The Cost of Being "So Strong" You know that moment when someone calls you "so strong"… and instead of feeling proud, you feel a little bit sick? Like, "If you knew what it costs me to hold all of this together, you'd stop complimenting me." If that landed somewhere real for you, this episode is yours. Because here's the truth nobody talks about: for high-capacity women, strength can become its own kind of trap. We get praised for holding it together, so we hold it tighter. We get called capable, so we take on more. And somewhere along the way, the version of us that everyone admires starts to feel like a performance — exhausting, isolating, and completely unsustainable. This episode is about naming what that actually costs. Not to shame the strength — but to get honest about when it stops being a gift and starts being a cage. In this episode: Why being "the strong one" is one of the least-examined forms of perfectionism The specific emotional labor that high-capacity women carry — and why it stays invisible How midlife burnout often looks like competence from the outside What it means to surrender the identity of strength without losing yourself The difference between being grounded in your capacity and being enslaved to it A note from Melissa: I recorded this one because I needed it. I spent years wearing "strong" like a badge — and underneath it, I was running on empty and completely unseen. If you've ever felt like the compliment "you're so strong" was actually the loneliest thing someone could say to you, you're not broken. You're just finally paying attention. This is the work. Not falling apart — but getting honest about what it's costing you to hold it all together, and choosing something different. If this episode resonated, share it with the strong woman in your life who looks like she has it all together — because she probably needs to hear this too. And if you're ready to go deeper, visit perfectionhangover.com to learn more about the work Melissa does with high-capacity women who are done performing and ready to rebuild. 008 Stop Giving Them Leftovers (It Isn't About Food)
2026/04/06
When my son asked, “What’s for dinner?” and groaned at the word “leftovers,” I realized he wasn’t reacting to the food—he was reacting to getting what was left of me after I’d performed for everyone else all day.   In this episode, we talk about how high‑capacity women quietly give their best energy to work, church, and other people’s expectations, and how to start saving your first, not last, energy for the people at home who matter most.
007 Navigating High Conflict: When the Past Won’t Let the Kids Move Forward
2026/03/19
There’s a side of healing no one really talks about—what it looks like to move forward when someone else is still stuck in the past. In this episode, I’m sharing some personal reflections on navigating high-conflict situations, especially within a blended family. When unresolved emotions continue to surface, it doesn’t just affect the adults… it affects the kids too. This isn’t about placing blame or calling anyone out. It’s about protecting peace, setting healthy boundaries, and recognizing the emotional weight children can carry when conflict lingers. If you’ve ever felt the tension of trying to build a calm, stable life while someone else continues to bring chaos into it, this conversation is for you. You can’t control someone else’s healing—but you can choose yours.
006 The First 15: Build Momentum with Small Daily Habits
2026/01/18
What if 15 minutes a day could change your life? In this episode, I share how intentional habits — small, consistent actions — create massive momentum over time. I break down my own morning routine, reveal the surprising power of daily streaks, and give you the First 15™ listener challenge to start your day strong, stay consistent, and finally take control of the habits that actually matter. Spoiler: You don’t need another planner. You need a better plan. It starts with small habits.
