Episode 6: My Interview on the Neurodiversity Voices Podcast
2025/11/17
In this special cross-posted episode, Cynthia joins Paul Cruz on the Neurodiversity Voices podcast to explore what it really means to “make the sensory connection”—for children, adults, families, educators, and clinicians.
Cynthia shares stories from her early days at Summit School, her years working in Cree communities, and the personal experiences that shaped how she understands sensory regulation as a human need, not a behaviour strategy. Together, they break down the eight sensory systems, how to recognize dysregulation, and how simple environmental changes can transform learning, communication, and emotional safety.
Whether you’re an educator, therapist, parent, or someone navigating your own sensory world, this episode offers practical, compassionate ways to support regulation right away.
Talking to My Husband About Sensory Regulation
2025/08/20
In this episode of Swinging Upside Down, Cynthia sits down with her husband and business partner, Michael, for a candid conversation about sensory regulation in everyday life. While much of the public conversation around sensory processing focuses on children, Cynthia and Michael dive into how these eight senses—beyond the classic five—affect us across our entire lifespan.
Michael shares his personal experiences living with ADHD, highlighting how sensory regulation influences his daily functioning, work, and relationships. Together, they explore:
Why sensory regulation is a human need, not just a children’s issue.
How ADHD can shape sensory patterns in unexpected ways.
The “big three” senses (touch, proprioception, vestibular) and how they underpin self-regulation.
Coping strategies Michael has developed—like weightlifting, fidget rings, and auditory input—to feel “just right.”
The impact of being on “high” or “low” in different senses (visual distractions, craving strong tastes, or feeling carsick).
The overlooked role of interoception (our sense of internal states) in managing stress, hunger, and emotions.
This heartfelt conversation is both practical and deeply personal, showing that sensory regulation is not about fixing problems, but about understanding ourselves. Whether you’re a professional, parent, or simply curious about your own patterns, this episode will leave you with insights to reflect on in your daily life.
Listen now and explore how the eight senses shape your world.

Talking to My Husband About His ADHD
2020/10/25
In this episode of Swinging Upside Down I talk with my husband, Michael Lautman, about his ADHD diagnosis as an adult.
This is a special episode for us. ADHD is a big part of our family’s everyday life. We’ve talked about doing an episode like this for a long time. We had a lot of fun recording this together talking about Michael’s experiences.
Michael was diagnosed when he was 31. During the conversation we discuss:
the events that led to his diagnosis
getting diagnosed and is feelings around it
early childhood stories
medication
coping strategies
self-esteem
The music for the podcast was provided by the amazing Yaron Cohen.

Episode 3: Using Routines to Thrive During Self-Isolation
2020/03/25
In Episode 2, I talked about how routines can help kids, both under regular circumstances and especially during these trying times.
As parents, we can use routines in our days to help us cope as well. Knowing that we have a schedule, and doing our best to stick to it (with some flexibility) can make our days go more smoothly.
Stay healthy everyone!
Episode 2: Using Routines to Survive Self-Isolation
2020/03/23
The Cynthia Miller-Lautman Show is now The Swinging Upside Down Podcast!
The COVID-19 global pandemic is having a huge impact, and this is especially true for parents, whether or not their children have disabilities. Many of us are trying to juggle a full-time job (suddenly done from the house) while our kids are at home. Add to that the stress of keeping away from friends and family, and the general uncertainty of the situation, and we get a recipe for stress.
In this episode, I discuss how you can use routines to make your days manageable, and give you some examples of what we’re doing in our family to help make our kids more independent at managing their time.
