Description

Dogs. They’re companions, guardians, and much much more – they complete us. And they just might save us from ourselves. Anna Webb explores all levels of modern dog ownership and brings to life why every dog is extraordinary. She speaks to scientists and experts - people who have and are changing our understanding of dogs - on everything from emotional intelligence to nutrition to behaviour, delving deep into subjects like homeopathy, telepathic communication and the pet food scandal. It's thought provoking, alternative, and not a little subversive. Cover photo by @Gruffpawtraits

Go West Young Dog!
2026/04/19
We’re joined by Author and Photographer, Paul Koudounaris, who has previously been on the show talking about Pet Cemeteries in his book Faithful unto Death. Today we’re chatting about railroad dogs and his latest book called Go West Young Dog. As a really fascinating read, the book uncovers a somewhat hidden pocket of canine history about some brave, vagabond  dogs that became famous by traveling - alone-  on the world's first rail networks. Paul concentrates on the American dogs, not that there weren’t ‘railroad’ dogs in other continents.  Many of these dogs gained ‘celebrity’ status - their stories are  funny, heartwarming, triumphant, and tragic, or all at the same time. As Paul says: 'I believe that within those stories, these dogs have some lessons to teach us.'  Buy the book here or contact Paul direct on [email protected] Get 20% off your first purchase by using the promo code AnnaWebb20 when you check out at Naturaw.co.uk This episode is powered by Antinol. Peter Egan
2026/03/15
We’re joined by Actor, Activist and Broadcaster, Peter Egan, who is talking about why he is campaigning and raising awareness for the seven million hens in the UK are kept in so-called “enriched cages”, where each bird has space roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper, preventing them from fully stretching their wings, foraging or dust bathing. Campaigners say the UK is falling behind several European countries on animal welfare, with Austria banning enriched cages in 2020, France banning new cage systems in 2018 and Germany now fully cage-free. Peter also chats about his work as a huge advocate for dogs, not least in being a Patron for the charity that Anna is an Ambassador for - All Dogs Matter! Danny from Tug E Nuff
2026/03/08
We’re joined by Danny Nelis-Rouse, founder of Tug E Nuff, the enrichment and training range of dog toys. Designed and made in the UK by the family run business, we chat about these toys are practical and great for all dogs. Helping owners to engage, have fun, and get the best out of the dog, simply by giving them great games of chase, tug, retrieve, searching and much more. They’re designed for pet parents to tap into their dogs natural instincts through ‘proactive playtime’.  Adding enrichment to your dog’s day comes in many shapes and sizes. And depends on your dog’s individual personality, but dogs and dogs, and igniting their inner dog, will help you bond, and have fun both ways.  Plus working both their mental and physical dexterity is so important, especially in senior pooches to help create focus and keep them on the ball. Junkyard Dogs!
2026/03/01
With Crufts just three days away, we’re so excited to be chatting to Naturaw’s Founder, Jess Warneken, on the company’s sponsorship of the Flyball team, Junkyard Dogs. Competing at this year’s most prestigious global canine event, we’re also joined by the team captain, Cheryl Quinn, who discusses why the pressure is on! She explains the training involved - and that’s not just for the dogs - and why it’s such a community driven sport and highly competitive. Teaching the dogs to remain focused, takes time and commitment with weekly training sessions.  Cheryl believes any dog can enjoy Flyball, but at a high competition level, the dogs are chosen for their commitment to their team spirit, and for their individual skills. Some have more speed to gain time, whilst others have others combine speed with accuracy that’s needed to prevent any faults. Every Flyball team must incorporate at least one pure bred dog , which in Junkyard’s case is a Border Collie, others can be any cross breed, with Lurchers being firm favourites. Naturaw is thrilled to support Junkyard Dogs! As the sport requires dogs to be in peak condition to win with speed and precision, the  team is fed Naturaw for this reason. Helping to fuel them for optimum health from the inside out. No matter what,  it’s about having fun, the dogs have been acclimatised to the atmosphere , the roar of the crowds and the many distractions - sights , sounds and smells  that can overwhelm many dogs. As always everyone at Crufts no mater what takes their best dog home! Greger Larson
2026/02/08
This week we're joined by Ancient DNA Specialist, Professor Greger Larson of Oxford University who has revealed that cats have only been domesticated for 4,000 years. Until very recently we have assumes this figure was 10,000 years. Prof Greger discusses how his work helps map our relationships with both cats and dogs in line with our own human evolution. Explaining that although cats were thought to have been domesticated around 10,000 years ago , in fact the latest science suggests that cats began their close relationship with humans relatively recently especially when compared to dogs. He explains the cats’ evolution and why the ancient Egyptians thought of them as deities, and why their recent domestication means they are literally more wild than dogs. Cats were happy to stay at a comfortable distance from humans for thousands of years. Unlike dogs, we chat briefly on a very new discovery that potentially is the oldest known dog to ever! Some argue it’s a vital missing link, but will this change our knowledge of dogs per se? However Prof Greger could have an announcement brewing that might just change this. Not All Raw Food Is Created Equal
2026/02/01
This week we’re discussing why not all raw food is created equal. We're joined by Naturaw’s co-founders, Jess Warneken and Chris Broadbent, chatting about how setting up Naturaw was inspired by Jess’s first Rhodesian Ridgeback. We chat about how the company is spearheading the Rawvolution. Its success in offering nutrient dense, balanced and complete recipes is down to a real passion for helping pet parents feed as nature intended with confidence and a conscience. To date Naturaw has planted over 23,000 trees to off set its business footprint. The HQ uses solar power and the packaging is 100% plastic free.  More than that, supporting British farmers, the range caters for everyone! The Original range is a wide selection of either single or complementary proteins, there’s the multi-award winning Forage range and the new Real Simple range which hits a competitive price point.  We chat about when Jess met the King in receiving the prestigious King Award for Sustainable Development.  Chris Broadbent highlights the staggering market statistics, that in an age where feeding fresh is a big growth sector, especially feeding raw, it couldn’t be more important to consider that not all raw is created equal. Welcome Back Gordon Maclellan
2026/01/25
This week we're joined by retired Orthopedic Surgeon, Gordon Maclellan. As the founder of the Pupscan Project, he’s talking about hip dysplasia in dogs and whether dysplasia is congenital or caused by environmental factors. The research, studying over 70 breeds, hundreds of litters, suggests in line with ground breaking studies in Sweden, the evidence reveals that there is no genetic influence on dysplasia in dogs. Interestingly this has already been confirmed in people! Plus we chat about ‘flat faced’ breeds and their breathing issues, which Gordon discusses is arguably not a result of a short muzzle, but rather more related to the width of nostrils and the efficacy of airway passages. Also being related to whether the dogs are porky or slim, with obesity having a huge body burden affect on many health issues, not least respiration. Also talking about common environmental stressors, including slippy floors, household cleaners, and over exercise in puppyhood to under exercise in adults dogs. We chat about the differences across the pond, as being more like similarities!
