Extra episode: Live from the Leaders in Finance AML Event 2026 with Marinos Berger, Oliver Bullough, Daniel Orchard, Vincent Gaudel, and Guido Penzhorn
2026/10/19
Welcome to this extra episode of the Leaders in Finance Podcast, recorded live after the Leaders in Finance AML Event 2026 at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.
Host Tom van Disseldorp is joined by Marinos Berger (Senior Solutions Lead Fraud & Compliance at SAS), Oliver Bullough (journalist and author), Daniel Orchard (EMEA KYC & Onboarding Specialist at NICE Actimize), Vincent Gaudel (Financial Crime Compliance Expert at LexisNexis Risk Solutions), and Guido Penzhorn (Partner at Deloitte) to reflect on the fight against money laundering and financial crime.
After years of regulation, investment and technological development, why are we still discussing the same challenges? Can AI fundamentally improve investigations while criminals are using the same tools? And how do we measure whether AML efforts actually make a difference?
The guests explore the gap between compliance and effectiveness, the need for cross-border information sharing, and the importance of data quality and feedback from FIUs and law enforcement. They also discuss the human cost of financial exclusion and why closing alerts or filing reports tells us little about the criminal networks disrupted or victims protected.
Their challenge to the sector: move from proving how hard we work to understanding what actually works.

Extra episode: Live from the Leaders in Finance HR Event 2026 with Karlijn van den Berg, Isabel Workel-Tijhuis, and Tom Alstein
2026/10/15
Welcome to this extra episode of the Leaders in Finance Podcast, recorded live after the Leaders in Finance HR Event 2026 at Kontakt der Kontinenten in Soesterberg.
Host Marije Tolsma-Groen is joined by Karlijn van den Berg (Head of Talent at ABN AMRO), Isabel Workel-Tijhuis (Group Director Human Resources at Triodos Bank), and Tom Alstein (Partner at Deloitte) to reflect on HR’s role in shaping the future of work.
How do organisations embrace AI while bringing their people along? How will junior employees develop if technology takes over their learning tasks? And what makes people stay: pay, purpose or career opportunities?
The guests explore short-term efficiency versus long-term development, the limits of focusing only on people’s strengths, and the importance of trust and honest leadership. Drawing on contributions from Nicole Scoble Williams and Laureen Rwatirera, they discuss reskilling, adaptability and building enthusiasm for AI.
Their message: HR should actively shape how people and technology work together to unlock human potential and create value for organisations and society.
Thank you to all speakers, participants and event partners for an inspiring day.

Extra episode: Live with Ralph Hamers on Do Your Thing – transforming ING, AI and leadership
2026/10/04
In this extra episode of Leaders in Finance, Jeroen Broekema speaks with Ralph Hamers, former CEO of ING and UBS, about his book Do Your Thing: Lessons from Banking’s Biggest Digital Transformation. Recorded live at the Dutch Banking Association in Amsterdam.
Ralph wanted to turn ING into a tech company with a banking licence. It took seven years, plenty of persistence and saying no to promising business opportunities. He shares what worked, what went wrong and why, as CEO, he even got involved in the colours of bank cards.
Jeroen and Ralph also discuss AI, competition from fintechs and Europe’s dependence on American technology. And how is life after UBS? Ralph is keeping busy with a portfolio of roles at growing companies. The title matters less to him than the chance to get his hands dirty.
Book discussed: Do Your Thing: Lessons from Banking’s Biggest Digital Transformation by Ralph Hamers.
Further listening: Jeroen Broekema previously spoke with Ali Niknam about founding bunq and his life as an entrepreneur. You can also read the transcript of that conversation.

#211: Stefaan Decraene – CEO of Rabobank – simplifying a ‘Sleeping Beauty’, AI, agro, AML, taking risks and staying humble
2026/09/24
Jeroen Broekema speaks with Stefaan Decraene about his first years at Rabobank and the decisions he made after arriving in Utrecht. Decraene talks about telling people to leave meetings, building his own management team and trying to bring more speed into the bank. The conversation also covers AI, agro and AML, Rabobank’s return to professional cycling, taking risks and staying humble.
Stefaan Decraene has served as Chair of Rabobank’s Managing Board since January 2023, becoming the first non-Dutch person to lead the bank. In this role, he heads an international cooperative bank with around 48,000 employees across 34 countries.
Decraene began his career in 1988 at Bacob Bank, a Belgian cooperative bank that became Artesia, where he worked in investment banking and securities before becoming Chair of Artesia Securities and subsequently Chair of Bank Artesia Nederland. He then held several senior positions at Dexia. In 2006, he became Chair of Dexia Bank Belgium.
He also took on group-level responsibility for retail and commercial banking in Belgium, Turkey, Slovakia and Luxembourg. In 2011, Decraene joined BNP Paribas. Based in Paris, he spent the next 11 years on the Group’s Executive Committee, where he was responsible for its international retail banking activities.
Since taking the helm at Rabobank, Decraene has overseen an internal reorganisation and a period of strong financial performance. In 2024, Rabobank reported a record net profit of €5.2 billion and close to €5 billion again in 2025. In 2026, the bank announced plans to invest up to €2 billion in data, technology and artificial intelligence over the next three years.
Decraene studied political, social and economic sciences at the University of Brussels and later earned a master’s degree in economics from KU Leuven. He is 61 years old and is married to Catherine. They have two sons, and he is also a grandfather. During the week, he lives in Amsterdam. At weekends, he returns home to Bruges, Belgium.

Extra episode: Live from the Leaders in Finance Compliance Event 2026 with Leanne Joseph, Tom van de Laar, and Pieter van Doorn
2026/09/17
Welcome to this extra episode of the Leaders in Finance Podcast, recorded live after the third Leaders in Finance Compliance Event at the H’ART Museum in Amsterdam, where over 100 participants from more than 50 organisations came together to discuss the future of compliance in financial services, with a particular focus on AI, technology and crypto.
Host Kees de Wit reflects on the day’s key themes together with Leanne Joseph (moderator of the event), Tom van de Laar (Head of Financial Crime Compliance & Deputy Chief Compliance Officer, Rabobank), and Pieter van Doorn (Partner, Deloitte).
Together, they discuss how rapidly developing technologies are changing the compliance profession, whether AI could eventually replace parts of the compliance function, and why human judgement will remain essential. They also reflect on the rise of crypto and neobanks, the impact of regulation such as MiCAR, and the continuing tension between innovation and effective oversight. And looking ahead: how can financial institutions, regulators and other public and private parties work together more effectively, build trust and respond with greater urgency to a rapidly changing financial landscape?
A big thank you to all speakers, participants and our event partners for making this another inspiring edition of the Leaders in Finance Compliance Event.

LIF in 10 #1: Anneka Treon (ING) – chess, Dutch directness, competition and why a career is a marathon, not a sprint
2026/09/11
Some conversations are worth returning to. This is certainly one of them.
Anneka Treon’s original appearance became the most-listened-to episode in the history of the Leaders in Finance Podcast. In this new ten-minute edit, Jeroen Broekema revisits some of its most memorable moments.
Anneka talks about growing up as a competitive chess player and a self-described nerd, what first drew her to financial services, and the striking cultural differences between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. She also reflects on ambition, competition and why building a career is ultimately a marathon, not a sprint.
At the time of the original recording, Anneka worked at Van Lanschot Kempen. She has since joined ING, where she leads its global wealth management business.
Enjoy these ten minutes with Anneka Treon. Would you like to hear more? Listen to the full original episode here.

#210: Daniele Tonella – CTO of ING – leading 20,000 tech professionals, AI beyond the hype, “garbage in, disaster out”, introversion and the drive to build
2026/09/07
Daniele Tonella is Chief Technology Officer and a member of ING’s Management Board Banking. Since August 2024, he has been responsible for ING’s global technology landscape and advises the Management Board on technology-driven business opportunities. As he puts it, his role covers almost everything at ING that contains “a chip or a line of code.”
He leads a global technology organisation of around 20,000 employees. His responsibilities include the reliability and security of ING’s systems, engineering productivity, the transition to scalable global technology platforms and cloud-native architecture, and innovation in areas such as artificial intelligence.
Before joining ING, Daniele was Group Chief Information Officer at UniCredit and CEO of UniCredit Services. Earlier in his career, he led AXA Technology Services, served as Global CIO at Evalueserve, held technology and operations leadership roles at Swiss Life, and worked in consulting at Mercer Management Consulting and McKinsey & Company.
Daniele grew up in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland and studied engineering at ETH Zurich. He later completed executive education programmes at Harvard, IMD, INSEAD and MIT Sloan. Daniele is 54, is married, lives in Switzerland and has four children.
In this conversation, Daniele discusses what it takes to lead technology at scale, why AI can turn “garbage in, garbage out” into “garbage in, disaster out,” and how ING balances innovation with standardisation, security and resilience. He also reflects on his leadership style, the future of junior engineers, technological sovereignty, introversion, family life and his lifelong desire to build things.

#209: Frits Moonen – oprichter van Momentum Family Office – objectief advies, bouwen zonder verkoopprikkels, groot durven dromen en Pokémonkaarten
2026/08/31

Triodos Investment Management beheert inmiddels ruim €6 miljard.
