#178 – Beyond the American Dream: Laverne Rodgers
2026/09/30
What does it mean to break the mold when the world has already decided what success should look like? In postwar America, the dream was to build a comfortable life, but some chose to step outside those expectations, trading the American dream for a life devoted to following God's call wherever it led. Join Tracie and Abigail as they share the story of Laverne Rodgers, whose call to missions began while he was a young soldier during World War II. By 1950, he was in Japan, where he and his wife devoted their lives to evangelizing the country. For 72 years, Laverne faithfully served on the mission field, continuing until his death at 95. Their story reflects this season's theme, Breaking the Mold—choosing God's calling over the comforts and expectations of postwar America and discovering a life of purpose on the mission field. #177 – Marlene Evans' Legacy: Rejoice in the Lord Alway (Part 2)
2026/09/23
What happens when a woman refuses to be confined by what others think she should be? What happens when she simply follows God, uses the gifts He has given her, and allows Him to shape her into the woman He wants her to be? Join Tracie and Abigail as they continue the story of Marlene Evans, following her lifetime of ministry from the early 1960s until her passing in 2001. A teacher, wife, mother, dean, speaker, writer, leader, soul winner, and developer of people, Marlene broke the mold without breaking biblical principles. Her story is a powerful picture of this season’s Breaking the Mold—and of a woman who didn't simply serve God herself, but helped countless others discover what God could do through them. And when her work was finished, she left behind the words she had taught so many others: “Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say rejoice.” If you know of someone who can be helped by listening to the Abundant Living Podcast, please share this episode with them. #176 – Follow Thou Me: the Making of Marlene Evans (Part 1)
2026/09/16
What if your life's experiences were meant to prepare you for something you couldn't yet see? What if the lessons, opportunities, disappointments, and unexpected turns along the way were all part of God's preparation for what He had ahead? Join Tracie and Abigail as they begin the story of Marlene Evans and discover how the experiences God allowed in her young life shaped the woman she became. From the time she was a little girl and heard the words “Follow Thou Me,” those words became a thread through her life, carrying her through years of preparation for serving God. Her story is a beautiful example of this season’s theme, Breaking the Mold—following God beyond what others might expect. And next week, that preparation gives way to a lifetime of ministry. #175 – Breaking the Mold: Season 13 Opener
2026/09/09
Have you ever wondered if the expectations placed on women by our culture actually reflect God’s design? Have you ever felt that you had to choose between being a biblical woman and pursuing the gifts, abilities, and opportunities God has given you? What if you could step outside the mold without stepping outside God’s Word? What if you could "have it all" in living for God? Join Tracie and Abigail as they introduce Season 13 of the Abundant Living Podcast, “Breaking the Mold.” This season, they’ll share stories of 20th-century Christians, historical figures, and fellow sisters in Christ who refused to settle for what culture told them they had to be. These women didn’t abandon biblical principles to make an impact—they surrendered their gifts, personalities, intelligence, courage, creativity, and influence to Christ and allowed Him to use them in remarkable ways. #172 – A Health Pivot: Learning to Serve Well
2026/07/22
Have you ever felt guilty for slowing down? Many Christian women pour themselves into serving others while neglecting the very body and mind God has entrusted to them. When illness, exhaustion, or life's unexpected pivots force us to stop, we may wonder if we're doing enough for the Lord. But what if caring for yourself is not selfish at all, but an act of faithful stewardship? In this episode, Tracie shares the heart behind her North Florida Baptist Ladies Conference session, "Do Well and Be Well for the Lord," based on the truth of "Ye are not your own… therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit." Joined by Abigail, they discuss the physical and emotional pivots that have reshaped their own lives and ministries, the importance of caring for the bodies God has given us, and the freedom to seek help, rest, eat well, see a doctor, and lean on trusted friends without guilt. Drawing from the lives of faithful servants like Susannah Spurgeon and Amy Carmichael, this episode reminds us that stewarding our health isn't a distraction from serving God—it enables us to serve Him faithfully for years to come. #171 – Pivot to Redemption: Rosanna Patience Edgerley Grenfell's Story
2026/07/15
Have you ever wondered if one wrong decision could forever change God's plans for your life? Failure has a way of convincing us that we've missed our opportunity to be used by the Lord. But Scripture reminds us that …a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again… God's grace is not an excuse for sin—it is an invitation to repent, rise, and faithfully follow Him once more. In this episode, Tracie and Abigail share the remarkable story of Rosanna Patience Edgerley Grenfell. After a life-altering mistake seemed to bring an end to a future in African missions, she and her husband chose to do what was right, patiently accepted the consequences, and remained open to God's leading. When the door to the Congo opened again, they walked through it in faith, and God used them to help bring the Gospel to people who had never heard His name. George and Rosanna Grenfell's story reminds us that while our failures may redirect our path, they do not have to define our future when we are willing to rise again in obedience. #170 – Pivot of Multiplying Ministry: Vernon Charlesworth's Story
2026/07/08
Have you ever felt God asking you to take on something more? Sometimes His pivots don't require us to leave where we are—they simply ask us to trust Him with greater responsibility. Though the path may seem overwhelming, God faithfully equips those who are willing to follow His leading. In this episode, Tracie and Abigail share the inspiring story of Vernon Charlesworth, who answered God's call to lead Charles Spurgeon's orphanage while continuing to faithfully preach where God called him and to care for his own large family. Through his willingness to embrace God's unexpected pivot, hundreds of orphaned children found hope and faith in Christ, and generations have been encouraged by the timeless hymn Shelter in the Time of Storm. His story reminds us that when we surrender our plans to God's greater purpose, He can multiply our influence far beyond what we ever imagined. #169 – Presidential Pivot: Sarah Bush Lincoln's Story
2026/07/01
Have you ever faced a pivot that completely changed the course of your life? Perhaps your plans gave way to unexpected responsibilities or circumstances you never would have chosen. While those moments can leave us wondering what God is doing, they are often the very places where He accomplishes His greatest work. In this episode, Tracie and Abigail share the remarkable story of Sarah Bush Lincoln, whose unexpected pivots led her into a role she never could have imagined. Rather than dwelling on what might have been, she faithfully invested in her family, rooted them in church, and nurtured the character of her young stepson, Abraham Lincoln. Through her quiet faithfulness, God used Sarah's influence to help shape the man who would one day preserve the Union. Her story reminds us that when we embrace God's pivots with willing hearts, He can use our ordinary obedience to accomplish extraordinary purposes for generations to come. 2026/06/17
Have you ever found yourself in a season of change you didn't ask for? When life takes an unexpected turn, it can be difficult to understand why God is allowing the circumstances around you to shift. What if the very pivots you resist today are the ones God is using to lead you exactly where He wants you tomorrow? In this episode, Tracie sits down with her friend Alyssa King to discuss the many pivots that shaped her life story. From a difficult childhood marked by constant change and the loss of her mother, to moving from family to family and facing uncertain circumstances, Alyssa shares how God was faithfully working behind the scenes. Every turn in the road was leading her to a Bible-believing church, where she found Christ and eventually met the man who would become her husband. Through resilience, obedience, and a growing trust in the Lord, she discovered that God's way is always best. Her testimony is a powerful reminder that even when we cannot see God's purpose in the pivot, we can trust the One who is directing our path. Yet God's grace has a remarkable way of meeting us where we are and redirecting our steps toward something greater. In this episode, Tracie and Abigail explore the life of hymn writer Helen Lemmel. Though her journey was marked by unexpected turns and difficult seasons, Helen's story is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond God's reach. When she turned her focus back to Christ, God used her life to leave a legacy that continues to encourage believers generations later. Her testimony reminds us that when we pivot in the right direction—and turn our eyes upon Jesus—God can transform our story into something that brings glory to Him and hope to others. #165 – Outside the Box: Lilias Trotter's Innovative Ministries
2026/06/03
If God gave you a specific talent, a unique background, or a hobby you love, is it possible He intended to use those very things as a bridge to the Gospel? Many of us wait for a "traditional" door to open, but what if the most effective way to reach your neighbor is to think entirely outside the box? In this episode, Tracie and Abigail dive back into the life of Lilias Trotter to look at her ingenious ministry methods. From her early days advocating for women with the YWCA to her pioneering work in North Africa, Lilias didn't leave her artistry behind—she used it as a key to unlock hearts. We discuss how she used her sketches, her appreciation for beauty, and even her unique life experiences to connect with people who were closed off to the Gospel message. Join us as we explore how, with a little ingenuity and tenacity, your own unique "pivot" can lead to a ministry that reaches others for the cause of Christ. #164 – A New Canvas: Pivots of Lilias Trotter
2026/05/27
What would lead a woman with a brilliant future in the world of high art to trade everything for the lost souls of North Africa? Is it possible to lay down a God-given talent in exchange for His calling, and find that nothing was actually lost in the process? Sometimes the most beautiful masterpiece isn't found on a canvas, but in the life of someone willing to say "yes" to God's redirection. In this episode, Tracie and Abigail introduce the incredible life of Lilias Trotter. We explore her "pivot" from a genteel Victorian upbringing and the mentorship of art critic John Ruskin to a life of poverty and service on the Algerian mission field. Before we dive into her specific works and missionary methods next week, we’re looking at the big picture of her life—a story of radical surrender that proves there is profound purpose when we allow God to pivot our path toward furthering the cause of Christ.
