No... this is NOT a Tyler Perry movie. TeaRon dives into Strung, the psychological thriller from director Malcolm D. Lee starring Chloe Bailey, Lynn Whitfield, Anna Diop, and Lucien Laviscount. The film follows Laila, a gifted young musician whose dream opportunity quickly spirals into a web of seduction, manipulation, secrets, and murder. Hired as a live-in tutor for the daughter of a late rap icon, she soon realizes the luxurious mansion she's entered is hiding far more than musical talent. Strung is packed with stunning performances, beautiful cinematography, psychological twists, and enough red flags to make anyone turn around—but does it undermine itself by explaining too much instead of letting audiences piece the mystery together? TeaRon breaks down what worked, what didn't, and whether Strung delivers a satisfying psychological thriller or gets tangled in its own ambitious storytelling. Did Strung keep you guessing, or did it reveal too much before the credits rolled? –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Follow Us: IG: @tearonworld TT: @tearon__ FB: facebook.com/UbiquitousBlacks THRD: @ubiquitousblacks ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– About UBIQUITOUS BLACKS REVIEWS: 'Ubiquitous Blacks Reviews' is an extension of the Ubiquitous Blacks Podcast where TeaRon (IG: @tearonworld) reviews the latest in Black Movies, TV Shows, and more. The King of Pop finally gets the biopic treatment… but does it live up to the legend? In this episode, TeaRon breaks down MICHAEL, the long-awaited film centered on the life of Michael Jackson. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and backed by the Jackson family, the film introduces Jaafar Jackson in a striking portrayal of his iconic uncle. With a stacked cast including Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and more, the film delivers stunning recreations of Michael’s most legendary performances from his early days in Gary, Indiana to the rise of the The Jackson 5 under Berry Gordy.  But while the visuals and nostalgia hit, the storytelling struggles. Rushed pacing, surface-level moments, and a noticeable lack of emotional depth leave the film feeling more like a highlight reel than a true character study. For a figure as complex and influential as Michael Jackson, the film plays it safe, avoiding the deeper layers many fans were hoping to finally see.  TeaRon dives into what works, what doesn’t, and whether this biopic truly captures the man behind the legend or just the myth. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Follow Us: IG: @tearonworld / @bkwitda4fa4 TT: @tearon__ / @bkgostupid FB: facebook.com/UbiquitousBlacks THRD: @ubiquitousblacks ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– About UBIQUITOUS BLACKS REVIEWS: 'Ubiquitous Blacks Reviews' is an extension of the Ubiquitous Blacks Podcast where TeaRon (IG: @tearonworld) reviews the latest in Black Movies, TV Shows, and more. In honor of Black History Month, TeaRon and BK revisit the 2007 film The Great Debaters for a fresh BK’s Blacklist review. It’s BK’s first watch and TeaRon’s long-overdue revisit, and the two dive into the film’s powerful themes of racism, justice, and resilience. They break down the film’s fictionalized depiction of the Wiley College debate team, the standout performances from Jurnee Smollett, Denzel Whitaker, Denzel Washington, and Forest Whitaker, and the lingering “what could have been” of Nate Parker’s once-rising career. Why does a story set in the 1930s feel so relevant in 2026? And how does the film land differently for a millennial viewer vs. a Gen Z first-timer? In Tyler Perry's Joe's College Road Trip, Perry takes one of his most unhinged characters, Joe, and pushes him even further. What was once just Madea’s oxygen-tank-toting, foul-mouthed brother becomes the leader of a cross-country “educational” journey as he attempts to teach his grandson B.J. what it really means to understand and appreciate African-American history. But Tyler Perry doesn’t just push boundaries… he blasts past them. The film opens with a content warning that still doesn’t prepare you for what’s coming. When Brian asks Joe and Madea for help after discovering how little B.J. knows about HBCUs and Black history, Joe and his grandson sets off on a chaotic, raunchy, and controversial road trip that takes us from Mississippi cotton fields to Tennessee blues clubs… and even a brothel scene that has the internet debating how far is too far for Tyler Perry these days? Is Perry mixing education and vulgar humor in a bold new way or is this a misfire that strays too far from his core audience?  TeaRon & BK break down the shock factor, the cultural conversations, and whether TP Studios should continue down this road. We’re kicking off 2026 with something different. TeaRon and BK review the independent sci-fi film Underneath: Children of the Sun, a passion project years in the making that has already pulled in over 800K views on YouTube—a major win for indie cinema. Directed by David Kirman, the film is set in 1850s Missouri, where a man’s chance encounter with an alien survivor from a crashed spacecraft pulls him into a much larger intergalactic conflict. The result is an ambitious blend of Black history, cosmic politics, and generational legacy. TeaRon and BK break down the film’s impressive visuals, bold ideas, and its decision to weave a slavery storyline into a sci-fi epic—while questioning whether the story fully delivers on its massive promise. Is Underneath proof of what Black audiences are craving—and a glimpse into the future of independent filmmaking—or does its ambition outpace its execution? BK’s Blacklist is back, and this time TeaRon and BK revisit one of the most provocative and unsettling films in Black cinema history: John Singleton’s Higher Learning. Released over 30 years ago, this controversial cult classic feels disturbingly more relevant today. Set on the fictional Columbus University campus, Higher Learning traps America’s most volatile social issues inside a pressure cooker—where race, masculinity, identity, white supremacy, patriarchy, and violence collide with devastating consequences. The film features early performances from future Black Hollywood heavyweights and cultural icons including Omar Epps, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Regina King, Laurence Fishburne, Busta Rhymes, alongside Kristy Swanson and Jennifer Connelly. Each character represents a different path through college life, exposing how ideology, insecurity, and power can radicalize young minds. TeaRon and BK unpack Singleton’s bold vision, debate whether the film still holds up, and confront the uncomfortable truth at its core: the more things change, the more they stay the same. Does Higher Learning still hit too close to home in today’s America—or was it always meant to be a warning we ignored? It’s time for another Black ensemble Christmas movie — but this one is Unexpected. TeaRon and BK break down Unexpected Christmas, the holiday comedy starring Lil Rel Howery, Dominique Perry, Reagan Gomez-Preston, and the legendary Anna Maria Horsford. Before diving into the film, the hosts reflect on some of their favorite Black Christmas classics and what expectations come with them. In Unexpected Christmas, Marissa (Perry) is blindsided when her longtime boyfriend Richard (Howery) claims he can’t join her for Christmas — only for her to arrive at her family’s Texas home and find him there anyway… as the date of her estranged stepsister Kerry (Gomez-Preston). From fake boyfriends to messy revelations, chaos erupts as Marissa plots her holiday revenge. The question is: does this movie deliver festive fun, or does the drama overwhelm the cheer? TeaRon and BK unpack the twists, performances, and whether Unexpected Christmas earns a spot in the Black holiday movie rotation. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Follow Us: IG: @tearonworld / @bkwitda4fa4 TT: @tearon__ / @bkgostupid FB: facebook.com/UbiquitousBlacks THRD: @ubiquitousblacks –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– About UBIQUITOUS BLACKS Podcast: Ubiquitous Blacks is an internationally focused podcast that explores similarities and differences of the Black/African diaspora experiences around the world.
