In 2011, a Stoughton police chief wrote that William Farwell's past behavior was incompatible with police work. In 2017, the department hired him. Years later, William testified under immunity in the federal trial of his twin brother Matthew, a former detective accused of murdering Sandra Birchmore. That span of years is essential to understanding what went wrong around the young woman who entered a police youth program looking for a career in law enforcement. Tony Brueski and retired FBI behavioral expert Robin Dreeke trace the difference between a troubling allegation and an institutional decision documented in records. Internal findings described misconduct involving Sandra and Stoughton officers associated with the Police Explorers program, including its former leader Robert Devine. Prosecutors argue Matthew's relationship with Sandra began while she was underage and became a hidden system of control. They point to messages and instructions to delete communications, along with allegations that Matthew demanded Sandra re-earn his trust after she told him about William. On January 20, 2021, a worried friend contacted the department. Dispatcher James Fitton later testified that Matthew reacted with anger to the news of the call, told him not to discuss it, and sent a hostile text. Fitton said the handwritten note of the caller's report was discarded. Why was there no more effective response to the concern? The answer matters beyond one defendant. Federal prosecutors accuse Matthew Farwell of killing Sandra and staging her death as a suicide to hide wrongdoing. His defense says the relationship was wrong but that he did not kill her. It is easy to say a getaway car was never identified because the streets were too dark. It is much harder to prove what individual cameras could have seen on the night Nancy Guthrie disappeared. That gap is where Jennifer Coffindaffer’s field observations meet the forensic questions surrounding Nancy’s front porch. Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home on the night of January 31, 2026. During the early morning hours of February 1, her doorbell camera disconnected at 1:47, its software detected activity at 2:12, and a phone application connected to her pacemaker lost contact at 2:28. Authorities believe she was taken against her will. The 2:28 timestamp establishes a device disconnection, not the exact time of an abduction. Coffindaffer, a retired FBI agent, says she returned to the Catalina Foothills neighborhood after midnight to evaluate visibility for herself. She found more ambient light than she expected and points to streets and businesses that might have had surveillance coverage. Those are potential leads, not proof that footage exists or that investigators overlooked a car. Her own phone reportedly struggled to record what her eyes could see. She has also raised questions about possible biological or contact evidence on Nancy’s porch: specifically, whether a mat and a torn clump of vegetation were properly preserved. The publicly reported record does not independently resolve those collection questions. Separately, a hair sample recovered from the house was sent through a Florida laboratory to the FBI. Testing described months later was inconclusive. Eleven jurors were ready to find Lindsay Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity, and her lawyers now want the murder charges thrown out for good. Eric Faddis, a defense attorney and former prosecutor, is with me on the Lindsay Clancy mistrial, Matthew Farwell and Alex Murdaugh. Clancy's lawyers told Judge William Sullivan on November 2nd he should have questioned the lone holdout or seated an alternate instead of declaring a mistrial. Matthew Farwell's closing arguments are Friday, November 6th. Prosecutors say the former Stoughton detective strangled Sandra Birchmore, and the lobby camera shows him walking in a minute after her 9:13 text and out at 9:43. Farwell's lawyers say the 2021 trooper saw no signs of a struggle. Alex Murdaugh's four murder indictments come up November 13th. His lawyers argue the lead SLED agent misled the grand jury in July 2022 by describing Maggie's and Paul's blood on a shirt his own lab had tested and found no human blood on. In June 2025, a South Carolina judge threw out Michael Colucci's murder indictment after the lead SLED agent on the Alex Murdaugh case admitted he never wrote down what the victim's mother told him. The judge ruled the State had kept that from the jury. Eric Faddis, a defense attorney and former prosecutor, is with me on why that ruling matters to Alex. Alex's lawyers argue his four murder indictments should be thrown out for the same reason. The same agent told a grand jury in July 2022 that Alex's shirt carried Maggie and Paul's blood, after the State's lab had already found no human blood on it. In August 2021, he had told Alex that shotguns at the house were loaded like the gun that killed Paul. He swore to that before the grand jury, then called it a trick at trial and agreed it was not accurate. The hearing is November 13, 2026, and the retrial is set for April 2027. Alex Murdaugh's lawyers say the grand jury that indicted him heard a lie from SLED's lead case agent, David Owen, and they want the indictments thrown out over it. Owen told the July 2022 grand jury an expert found blood spatter on Alex's T-shirt; SLED's own lab had already found no human blood on it. He testified he never saw the lab report until November 2022 and never meant to mislead. He'd told Alex and two grand juries shotguns at Moselle held the same shells found where Paul was killed. At trial he agreed that was "not accurate." About the interview: "I'm allowed to use trickery to elicit a response." The defense wants dismissal without prejudice, letting the State refile, because it says grand jurors indicted on a spatter claim SLED's own lab disproved. Prosecutors haven't decided whether to try Lindsay Clancy for murder a second time, and eleven jurors in the first trial were ready to find her not guilty by reason of insanity. One juror held out, and Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial in September 2026. Clancy is charged in the deaths of her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and is held at Tewksbury State Hospital while the charges stand. On November 2nd, 2026, her lawyers asked Sullivan to dismiss the charges for good. They argue he should have questioned the holdout instead of ending the trial, and that a second trial would be double jeopardy. Sullivan hasn't ruled. Matthew Farwell wasn’t the only Stoughton officer Chief Donna McNamara’s internal investigation found had an inappropriate relationship with Sandra Birchmore. It named his twin brother William and former deputy chief Robert Devine too, and Sandra joined the department’s youth program at 12. The state later barred Devine from police work, and William testified under immunity that he was with Sandra on duty. A trooper testified nobody recorded or took notes when police questioned Matthew Farwell after her death. McNamara’s lawsuit says the town manager retaliated against her for helping the FBI; he denies it, and both are on paid leave. Farwell’s lawyers say Sandra took her own life, and he didn’t testify. Matthew Farwell is charged with killing a witness, which means prosecutors have to prove he killed Sandra Birchmore to keep her from going to federal authorities. His lawyers told the jury the only threat the government could point to was Sandra telling his wife, and his wife is not a federal law enforcement officer. The former Stoughton detective is accused of strangling Sandra, 23 and pregnant, in her Canton apartment on February 1st, 2021, and staging it to look like she hanged herself. Prosecutors in the Matthew Farwell trial say Sandra Birchmore spent the evening of February 1st, 2021, searching for baby shower venues and children's furniture, and that she left no note. By 9:43 p.m., they say, she was dead and Farwell was walking out of her building on camera. Eric Faddis, a defense attorney and former prosecutor, takes the five hardest facts in the government's case and argues each one the way Farwell's lawyers will have to in closing arguments on Friday, November 6th. The government says the former Stoughton detective strangled Sandra, 23 and pregnant, and staged her death as a hanging. In 2027 Elizabeth Holmes trades a federal prison camp for a Texas halfway house outside Austin, where Billy Evans is raising her two kids and still has the power of attorney she signed. On camera in You Can See Everything, he says he can do anything, so long as he's doing it as Elizabeth. Her father, Christian Holmes, tells Nathan Fielder the turning point in her life was easy to name: she was assaulted at 19 as a Stanford student. Holmes testified Sunny Balwani, about twice her age, told her that meeting him made her safe. Billy takes over the eggs she's beating and finishes them. Holmes, sentenced to 11 years for wire fraud, tells Fielder she never once lied. Invicta, her daughter, arrived months before she reported, and the name is Latin for unconquered. Elizabeth Holmes started an 11-year sentence in a Texas prison camp on May 30, 2023, for defrauding Theranos investors, and she left behind a baby girl named Invicta. The name is Latin for undefeated. She had William in 2021, before her fraud trial started. Lori Vallow Daybell's appeal reached the Idaho Supreme Court on November 2nd, and Justice Cynthia Meyer asked the question that reframed everything: if the court sides with Lori, does the death penalty come back? Her lawyer Craig Durham said the state has strong arguments against reviving the notice — but Lori is willing to find out. Her best argument is that a judge took away Mark Means, the lawyer she picked, in December 2021. Chad Daybell paid Means. And on a jail call, Chad told Lori the shared lawyer worked "unless we turn on each other." The justices handed that line right back to Durham.
