In the Delphi case, the only physical evidence the state presented connecting Richard Allen to the murders of Abby Williams and Libby German was a single unfired .40-caliber bullet found between the girls' bodies. Not fired from Allen's gun. Not found with DNA, fingerprints, or blood. Linked to his Sig Sauer through a forensic method called toolmark analysis — a discipline the Innocence Project has called "not settled science." No physical evidence. No witness who saw Allen harm anyone. One unspent round and microscopic scratches on brass. Meanwhile, the investigation had found other leads it chose not to follow. Kegan Kline ran a catfish account that communicated with Libby German. Someone using his account allegedly told one of Libby's friends that "shots" was supposed to meet her the day she was killed. Dual device logins showed two phones accessing the same account from Kline's residence that morning. After failing a polygraph about the case, Kline searched his phone for a question that suggests he knew what investigators might find. Police knew about the account by 2017. They did not tell the public about it until December 2021. Allen's defense filed a hundred-and-thirty-six-page document naming men with alleged ties to Norse paganism who the defense says the evidence pointed to. One allegedly confessed to his own sisters. His sister passed a polygraph. Another man's car allegedly came back from Delphi with dried blood. The FBI's behavioral analysts allegedly concluded those responsible held "Nordic beliefs." A retired police chief who worked the case wrote to prosecutors that the evidence against Allen was "far less compelling" than the evidence gathered on these individuals. Federal prosecutors say Stoughton police detective Matthew Farwell strangled Sandra Birchmore in her Canton apartment and staged the scene as a suicide. Massachusetts called it a suicide for three and a half years. Prosecutor Cummings told a jury Farwell met Sandra through a police youth program when she was a child and was allegedly with her by 15. When a friend called Stoughton police and disclosed the relationship, prosecutors say Farwell did a 180. Turned nice. Asked for a key. Sandra told friends he had changed. Matthew Farwell's murder trial opened in Boston on October 9 with a fight over one phone. Prosecutor Torey Cummings read the jury Sandra Birchmore's final text, sent to Farwell seven minutes before he reached her building on February 1, 2021. Defense attorney Kimberly Stevens answered with a search from Sandra's phone that afternoon, about the color of the suicide ribbon. The first describes a 23-year-old opening her door to a man she trusted. The second describes a woman the defense says took her own life after he broke up with her. The government's story starts in a Stoughton police youth program, where Cummings said Farwell found the littlest girl in the group photo, started tutoring her at the library, and was with her by the time she was 15. It runs through a pregnancy both of them believed was his, a $248 phone call that exposed the relationship, and a change in him that Sandra described to friends as a complete 180. Cummings told the jury he lulled her into feeling safe so he could kill her. The defense's story starts with the word affair and builds a different Sandra: psychiatric medication from age six, an attempt as a teenager, Thanksgiving and Christmas alone, $2.90 in the bank, spotting and scared. Stevens told the jury more than one person's DNA was on the strap and that mixture evidence is never evidence. The state's own medical examiner called it suicide, she said, before changing the certificate to undetermined this spring. No cameras were allowed. Twelve days before Kouri Richins' murder trial opened, the prosecutors preparing to try her served Verizon with a warrant for the phone records of a sitting sheriff, a former sheriff, and a police chief. Two of those men, Wasatch County Sheriff Jared Rigby and former Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds, pleaded not guilty October 7 to obstructing justice in her case. The Summit County Attorney's Office says it received an anonymous letter in January listing thirteen allegations against Detective Eric Mainord, one of the lead investigators on the Richins case and a candidate against Rigby for Wasatch County sheriff. Search warrant affidavits say Rigby had shown the same thirteen allegations to Mainord's boss the day after Mainord entered the race, and that she believed the Richins prosecution would be hurt unless he dropped out. County Attorney Margaret Olson's office opened a felony investigation into the sheriff instead of acting on the letter, and kept the case when Rigby asked a judge to take it away. Rigby is charged with second-degree felony obstruction, which carries one to fifteen years in Utah, plus a misdemeanor false-statement count. A filing from his own attorney says the charges accuse him of sending the letter, which prosecutors say contained false information. Edmunds faces a felony obstruction count; his lawyers say the charge arose from something he told investigators in a March interview. Rigby says he acted lawfully. Police Chief Wade Carpenter, whose records were also seized, has not been charged. What's at stake for Kouri Richins: Mainord was pulled from the witness list and never testified, which prosecutors say settles the question. Christa Pike told the execution team where to try the needle, her lawyers say. Three days after Abby Williams, thirteen, and Libby German, fourteen, were found dead on a creek bank in Delphi, Indiana, a man did something investigators say almost never happens. He walked up to a conservation officer in a grocery store parking lot and told him he had been on the trail that afternoon. His name was Richard Allen. The officer, Dan Dulin, wrote it down. Someone marked the form cleared. One word in red ink. Nobody has ever identified who wrote it. Prosecutor Nick McLeland said at trial he does not know to this day. Sheriff Tony Liggett testified that Allen "got lost in the cracks." That tip sat in a desk drawer for five years while the investigation processed more than forty-two thousand leads with federal backing. While Allen's name collected dust, the investigation released a composite sketch in 2017 that went on every billboard in the state. For two years, the public searched for that face. In April 2019, state police released an entirely different sketch and said the first one was never their person of interest. The FBI served a search warrant on the property owner where the girls were found — the agent swearing under oath there was probable cause this man committed the murders. The warrant was sealed and shelved. No charges followed. The Delphi police station's recording system erased every early interview with persons of interest. The then-chief later said it was "somehow engaged in a permanent record mode" that caused the device to overwrite itself. It took a retired Child Protective Services worker named Kathy Shank — volunteering without pay — to open the drawer and find the form in 2022. The break in the case was never buried. Robert Devine ran the youth police program Sandra Birchmore joined at 13, rose to deputy chief, retired during the internal investigation into his contact with her, and became a lawyer. In December 2025 the state's police standards board revoked his certification, finding a pattern of unprofessional conduct and that he was untruthful about his contact with her. Investigators say that contact included Facebook messages sent under a fake name. He disputes the findings, denies any encounter with her, and has sued to get his badge back. He has never been charged; neither has William Farwell, who gave up his certification in 2024. Matthew Farwell's defense has a doctor who won't say suicide and a medical examiner who no longer does. The DNA result in Sandra Birchmore’s case creates a simple fact with a complicated legal consequence: Matthew Farwell was not the biological father of her unborn child. Prosecutors still say the pregnancy matters to motive because they allege Birchmore told Farwell the baby was his and that his own communications show he believed her. Farwell has pleaded not guilty to federal charges accusing him of killing Birchmore and causing the death of her unborn child. The government alleges he strangled her on February 1, 2021 and staged the Canton apartment to look like suicide. The defense maintains she took her own life. That defense gained a significant piece of evidence when the Massachusetts medical examiner amended Birchmore’s death certificate. The original finding of “asphyxia by hanging” and “suicide” became “asphyxia” and “undetermined.” Defense expert Dr. Thomas Andrew says suicidal hanging remains possible. Prosecutors will counter with forensic experts who say the physical findings are more consistent with strangulation. The jury will also hear material from both sides of Birchmore’s state of mind. Judge Denise Casper has allowed prosecutors to introduce selected texts, social-media communications, oral statements and journal passages. She has separately ruled that the defense may present evidence of Birchmore’s mental-health history and prior suicidal thoughts.
