Kat Kennedy is an artist manager, working with the likes of We Are Scientists, Emeli Sandé and Liz Lawrence.  She has built a renowned reputation for herself within the industry, working at BigLife Management for over 16 years.  Kat was selected as a participant in the 2020-21 Keychange programme and often speaks at various conferences and industry events.  This conversation was fascinating, speaking to someone with so much experience working in the music industry was really eye-opening.  Generally, I am surrounded by others who are relatively 'new' to the industry, however, speaking with Kat put a lot of my thoughts into perspective.  In this episode, we talk about how she started at BigLife, her journey through student radio, as well as what being a manager consists of.  I hope you LOVE this episode, if you're wanting to get into working directly with artists in a management capacity, this episode is definitely for you. Megan Graye is the founder and editor in chief of Vocal Girls Club, a publication which focuses on creating diversity within the music industry, championing new artists, with a focus on marginalised genders.  Through events, written articles and their podcast, they help to showcase a huge variety of up and coming artists, helping more women and non-binary creatives to get into the music industry, through their platform.  Megan founded the platform in 2020 after years of wanting her own challenge; she had always created content but wanted her own project, feeling frustrated by the lack of women working in music, Vocal Girls was naturally born.  Megan is also a radio show host on Islington Radio and has a huge amount of experience working within the creative world.  This podcast episode left me feeling so inspired, I  wanted to throw my whole body into making and doing after talking to Megan, I hope you feel the same! Orla Gartland released her debut album 'Woman on the Internet' last August, reaching number 10 in the Official Charts, released as an Independent Artist.  No label, just Orla and her legend manager Claire.  We talk all about how we met back in 2019, how she finds herself working as a musician without a label, as well as her experience touring as a session musician for Dodie.  As I type this Orla is sitting next to me, as we are currently on tour across Europe !! Eliza Williams, known on socials as Doolittle Illustrations is absolutely smashing it as a freelance illustrator.  Her unique and fun illustration style has allowed her to grow a very organic plethora of clients, regularly working with Spotify on their 'Our Generation' project.  The project has taken the form of posters and installations at festivals such as Latitude, as well as exclusive artwork to celebrate moments in artists careers, such as Holly Humberstone at The BRIT Awards.  Eliza has illustrated artists such as Girl in Red, Matilda Mann and many more.  Eliza was born in Australia and lives in Melbourne; throughout this conversation, we talk about how she found her illustration style, stumbled into working in the music industry and also finds inspiration for her illustrations. Tina Hizon, commonly known as Tina Keys is a true icon within the music industry, working as a MD and Session Musician to some crazy cool artists.  Her bio is incredibly impressive, with the likes of Ed Sheeran, Roger Taylor, Clean Bandit, Maisie Peters and Dua Lipa as just some of the talent she has played alongside.  In this episode, we discuss Tina's backup plan of accounting in case music didn't work out, as well as the ups and downs of being a self-employed musician.  If you're wanting to start session playing, and don't know where to start, or if like me, you're fascinated by the people who work behind the scenes in music, you're going to love this episode.  I truly think this is one of my favourite ever episodes! Kirsten Evans is a British composer who has most recently completed working in the music departments for the Hulu Original 'I am Greta' and the new Marvel movie 'Morbius' during her first year as a freelance media music composer.  She has co-composed and been the vocalist for Wales' national entry to the Venice Biennale in 2017, which then toured the UK after it's 5 month stay in Venice with over 30,000+ visitors.  Kirsten is the founder of two start up companies, ‘Soundbake’ plans to help break down the masculine undercurrent of the virtual instrument market, whereas ‘Uglicat’ is a coaching business that helps new freelance musicians, who struggle to monetise their skills in an achievable, profitable and fulfilling way. Kirsten reached out to me via email and it was so lovely to hear about an industry which I personally know so little about.  The general consensus throughout this episode is, do not be worried if you send hundreds of emails and no one gets back, they may well reply over the course of time and if not, pester them!  Kirsten is an incredible talent, working in a very male dominated industry, with 94% of box office scores being written by men in 2018.  Please lap up all information you can from this episode and I hope you leave feeling as inspired as I did when recording. Dani Bennett Spragg is a recording engineer and mixer based in London.  She currently works primarily out of boutique North-West London studios Hoxa HQ & Toast Studios, working with artists such as Palace, The Amazons, IDLES and Circa Waves.  Stumbling into the industry aged 18, after doing work experience with industry legend Flood, Dani fell head over heels, learning on the job before landing her first full time role. I have known Dani for a few years, first meeting in April 2019.  I’ve admired her work and drive from afar, it was lovely to record this interview and catch up on the last 12 months.  Despite the world being upside down, it seems Dani has been working harder than ever, mixing tracks for The Rolling Stones and working on a handful of new material for some incredible artists.  Dani was named as 'Breakthrough Engineer of the Year' at the MPG Awards in 2019 and she was also nominated for the 2021 MPG Award for 'Recording Engineer of the Year'. Zuzu is an incredible artist from Liverpool, creating noisy, infectious tunes which show her passion and love for guitar riffs.  Writing music from the age of 7, she has had a love and drive to become a musician for years, signing her first publishing deal by the age of 18.  Zuzu has had an incredible career so far, touring with artists such as The Courteneers, Yonaka and Ten Tonnes. I’ve known of Zuzu for years, she is good friends with my lovely pal Lauran Hibberd so I reached out via Instagram to see if she’d be keen to have a natter.  I was thrilled when she agreed as I think her strong opinions and thoughts about the music industry would make a wonderful addition to the series.  In this episode we talk about her time touring with The Courteeners and how it shaped her world as a female musician within the industry, we also discussed how important her fans are to her and how she communicates with them via Facebook. Melody J Myers is a music writer based in California, USA, who writes for some brilliant indie mags such as Underground Zine, Buzz Kill Mag and UK Safe and Sound.  Pre-Covid, Melody was working within bookings, helping to find venues and unknown artists, researching new music and finding more about her local music scene.  She is also pretty nifty with a camera, shooting gigs and diversifying her skillset.   I have never met Melody in person, we've known each other for two years or so after she wrote an article of me in Buzz Kill Mag, when they released their first print edition.  She is such a full of life individual, with a strong passion for the visual arts and journalism.  It was SO lovely to catch up via zoom and hear her story into the music industry.
