When you think about our town mayor or other politicians, do you picture a celebrity - aloof and unapproachable? Derek France, Mayor of Flower Mound, is determined to change that perception!  A local businessman, Mayor France's first foray into local politics was joining the Animal Services Board and Veterans Board, a route which he highly recommends. It helped him understand how much local politics matter and that local politicians are just regular people.  Mayor France loves the numerous opportunities being Mayor gives him to connect with the community - from reading at the elementary school to speaking at business meetings. He explains Flower Mound's government is a “weak mayor system” with responsibilities split among a council.  As Mayor, he provides guidance, while the city manager handles operational decisions.  He and the council members serve as volunteers - these are not paid positions. Each month, its crisp pages share the stories of local residents and businesses in a powerful way, a goal dear to the heart of publisher Jane Kryzsiak.  Jane brings her decades of marketing experience in the corporate world, working with companies like PepsiCo & Tyson foods, to help build up businesses and nonprofits in our area. She loves coming alongside local business owners and learning what their objectives are to help get the word out. It’s difficult to imagine that in our wonderful Flower Mound community the darkness of child abuse exists. What is beautiful to see is the light that is being brought into those children’s lives through The Children's Advocacy Center for North Texas under the direction of CEO Kristen Howell. As CEO, Kristen works to ensure that every child victim of the crime of abuse in Denton and Wise counties receives justice and healing. Her staff of 78 has served over 3,500 children this year, and just approved a $6 million dollar budget to keep growing their efforts.  One of the sad truths about child abuse is that it can happen to children from any family and any background. Kristen is proud that in Flower Mound, the response to help these young victims is so robust and effective.  An important part of what they do first is provide support for law enforcement’s investigation. The Children’s Advocacy Center has a welcoming environment and child development professionals who are trained in this process. They also provide therapy, and are a powerful healing force in the lives of these children and their families.  The team approach and methodical investigation increases the chance that justice will be served in the courtroom. Kristen goes to every court case and shares that she is changed by the courage she sees in these kids.  The Advocacy Center would love for you to get involved as a volunteer and help them fulfill their mission to the youngest members of our community. Opportunities are available whether you prefer to help out in person, coordinate a diaper drive, serve on the board, or join the group that plans and runs seasonal events. DATCU is a local credit union here in Flower Mound, and if you’re looking to step away from the big banks and into a world that focuses on supporting the local community - Mary Jacoby encourages you to become a member! Mary has been in banking for 33 years, and a DATCU employee for the past 12. Her favorite part of the job as Community Relations Coordinator is all the wonderful friendships she’s made across Denton County. DATCU currently serves more than 100,000 members, and they have assets of more than a billion dollars.  DATCU offers all the financial services its members need, from free checking and savings accounts to loans and financial planning. As a credit union, Mary wants everyone to know that they are dedicated to making the best choices not just for their employees, but also for their members.  And that focus on the community goes far beyond banking. Mary explains that serving is part of the DNA at DATCU. Even at her interview, the DATCU CEO explained to Mary that joining a service organization is part of the expectations for her position, and she was more than happy to do so! She’s volunteered countless hours with Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, Communities in Schools of North Texas, served on the Board of the Lewisville ISD Education Foundation, and others. Although DATCU began as a teachers credit union back in 1936, these days anyone can join who lives, works, or worships in Denton County, or an adjacent county. As someone very involved in the volunteer scene, Mary has some suggestions. Aligning your skills and interests with your volunteer role helps you to be more purposeful about where you spend your time. Maybe you want to mentor in schools or help a food pantry? The Flower Mound Public Library is a classic town institution, and it's tempting to think you know everything about it. Sue Ridnour, the director of Library Services, is here to set the record straight. She wants you to know that if you haven’t visited lately, you’re missing out! Sue, who has been on the library staff since 1999 and director since 2013, is especially excited about the recent renovation that nearly doubled the square footage of the library building. This extra space allowed the addition of more study rooms, a children’s story time room, and a dedicated teen lounge. There is also a large meeting room that non-profit organizations are able to reserve if they need some extra space for an event. And while you can still learn about and check out books (Sue has 2 recommendations for you today), opportunities in the brand new Creation Lab that are evolving with the times. The Creation Lab is home to 12 different pieces of equipment, from a low tech spiral binding machine to a high-tech 3D printer and vinyl cutter. The project possibilities are endless! Find all the information you need to sign up to use the machines and what materials are required in the links below.  Even with all of these wonderful amenities, Sue hasn't finished vision casting yet! One of her next big projects is called a Library of Things. This library will have items such as fishing poles or crochet needles that you can check out to dabble in a hobby before investing money in it. She’s also looking forward to the installation of a Story Walk that brings literacy outdoors to the park in a unique way.  The Flower Mound Library contributes so much value to the community, and your support helps make it all possible. Simply using the library and encouraging your friends and neighbors to do so as well is an easy and fun way to help out. Is it possible for ordinary people like you and me to feel empowered? Bill Mischke, founder and owner of Flower Mound Taekwondo, believes that the answer to that is a resounding yes. His passion is equipping children and adults for self-defense through martial arts.

Being successful in school can be almost impossible for students who are hungry, wearing ill-fitting clothes, or lacking basic school supplies. Ann Pape Wilson, CEO of Communities in Schools North Texas (CISNT), is working hard to support these students in the Flower Mound area!  In 2012, Ann learned about the non-profit Communities in Schools North Texas and was strongly drawn to their model, which puts the focus on long term support. Currently, they have about 65 full time and 65 part-time case managers in schools across 7 districts. Impacting over 6,000 at-risk students, these case managers are able to form a full picture of a student’s life and understand what their academic and emotional needs are.  The physical support for students in the program is immediate. If a student requires school supplies or other basic assistance, a CISNT site runner can provide it to them that same day.  Volunteers and mentors are a vital part of the program, and a great way to get involved if you are passionate about helping students! One of CISNT core beliefs is that every child needs and deserves a one-to-one relationship with a caring adult. Ann has seen the difference this can make in setting students on a trajectory of success. Spending just 45 minutes a week with a child can encourage them on this path and open their eyes to possibilities for their future. Ann’s goal through CISNT is for kids to learn to be resilient, to know who they are, and to have the skills they need after graduation. To meet these goals as a non-profit, they need members of the community like you to volunteer, donate, or attend one of their creative fundraisers throughout the year.  Takeaways from this episode: Communities in Schools North Texas serve at risk students in the Denton County area through long term case management and student services.  CISNT is building a community to come alongside these students.  They focus on closing the gap of basic needs, so students are able to focus on academic success.  Mentors and other volunteers are needed to directly impact the students through weekly interaction. What does a successful corporate executive do when she’s ready to stop traveling and start a second career? For Yvonne Stewart, the answer was to open Woodhouse Spa here in Flower Mound! After spending decades in the beauty industry with companies like Bath & Body Works and Ulta, Yvonne was a vice president faced with the choice of where to move to handle her regional responsibilities. Flower Mound won her vote with its wonderful residents and easy access to the DFW airport.  When she learned about a franchise spa opportunity right as her kids were finishing college, Yvonne knew it was time for a change. She signed on the dotted line and looked all around the Dallas area for the perfect location for her new spa. You guessed it, Flower Mound fit the bill! Woodhouse Spa is located in the Shops at Highland Village, right on the edge of our town. Yvonne loves seeing how guests really anticipate the relaxing experience and plan to spend time slowing down and rejuvenating themselves. As they get a massage, nail service, or facial, it’s a chance to disconnect and decompress.  One of the biggest surprises in the business has been the way her family’s involvement has evolved. Her husband as well as both of their daughters are there almost every day, and Yvonne is grateful for the skills they bring to the table, especially when it comes to tech! It’s truly a family-operated business.  With the traveling part of her career over, Yvonne was eager to get plugged in as a business owner in the community. She chose the Flower Mound Chamber and Rotary, and has built valuable friendships and connections over the years. The way she and her husband have been welcomed by life-long residents is so warming to hear about. Here in Flower Mound, we have a lot of residents who love the small town feeling so much they never left. In fact, it is the caring community that has kept Jason Walter rooted in our town since the fifth grade. As he grew up, he stayed because he loved the small town atmosphere, convenient location, and many opportunities to serve. Following in his grandfather’s teachings of devotion to community, Jason won the 2019 Chamber Citizen of the Year award.  Jason has been the executive director of the Cross Timbers YMCA since 2011. After realizing his calling as a teenager through a summer job at the Y, he has been a part of the driving force ever since.  Along with youth sports, the active older adults program is one of their most popular. Jason learned that a lot of their members came in just to socialize and drink coffee. He started drinking coffee just so he could have the opportunity to talk and connect with them!  He’s also very passionate about their financial assistance programs, which allows struggling families to stay engaged at the Y even through job loss or pay reduction.  If you’re looking for an opportunity to get involved in our community, consider the Y! They rely on a multitude of volunteers for their programs, especially youth sports.
