It is fascinating to see how mine and other's views change through time and it was clear as I edited this episode that I feel like an entirely different person than the Drew that recorded this episode. Wow, that was yet another long break in between episodes. I really must sincerely apologize to all of you listeners, I keep making and breaking this promise of one episode a week. I don’t believe in excuses here, so I will leave that there, but what I will say is that it has been very interesting to look at myself in the mirror and say I want to work on this project but then not follow that up with actions. I’m sure many of you listeners have found yourselves in perhaps similar situations, and what strikes me is that there’s an additional casualty in the list of people affected by broken promises that sometimes gets left out. That person is our very self. You see, each time we break our word, not only do others lose trust in us, we lose trust in us as well. Now, this won’t show up at the conscious level necessarily but it certainly has ramifications in our lives. For me, it has meant slacking on a number of other life goals in the mean time. Almost as if to say to myself, “Well, if you’re not gonna live up to the podcast promise, why hold up any other promises?” and that is a slippery slope, in my experience, into a pit of despair. So, this episode (which is a beautiful episode that I am excited to share) is dedicated to all those who join me today in taking the very first step back into trusting ourselves and keeping our word. Ok, now onto the episode! This episode was recorded back on April 2nd, in person using the Bad Brownies mobile studio in Colleyville, Texas at our friend Teo’s family home. In this episode Viomar and I sat down with our dear friend, and returning guest, Teo Tamashiro Harris. The inanimate guest for this episode is the grandfather clock in the living room, listen carefully as it shares it’s opinions near the middle of the show. This episode was recorded this weekend, in person in the Bad Brownies Studio in Houston, Texas. In this episode Viomar and I sat down to record another update episode of the ongoing Drew and Viomar saga. We will probably be doing updates like this every 3 or 4 episodes as life is moving fast and we want to record as much as possible for posterity’s sake. In this week’s episode I welcome my delightful sister, Emily, back on for the second time. It was so much fun to get to record a conversation with her, that in many ways is just like an everyday conversation we might have while going on a walk or just hanging out. During our discussion we talked about memes and internet memes as a subset of them, the beauty that was the social media platform Vine, how corporations are capable of coopting internet culture to sell us things, and much more. Before beginning the episode, I have a bit of explaining to do regarding why this episode is a week late. As some of you may know, especially if you listened to the episode with my fiancé, Viomar, we had been separated for over a year with no clear end in sight due the craziness of our two countries, and, due to travel restrictions put in place in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. In this episode I welcome Nina and Yvan who are two Houston-based community organizers that I found through the social media account of one of their projects. That project is the HTX Community Fridge Project (https://houstonfridges.cargo.site/) which is an amazing community based effort to provide solutions for people in need of fresh food. It was an absolute pleasure to spend some time talking with these powerful women, to better understand their Community Fridge project, and to better understand what makes them tick. Their energy, drive, and dedication to caring for those around them is truly inspiring. During our discussion we talked about how the community fridge project works, other community based food insecurity solutions, the importance of grassroots direct action, the major influences in their lives and much more.
