Spotify’s board just signed off on another $1.5 billion stock buyback, so their total buyback authorization is now around $2.2 billion. Meanwhile, they keep bumping up subscriber prices, but artists are still getting fractions of a cent per stream. We’re digging into why that’s a problem, and we’ve got a few other stories this week you should check out. After taking last week off, we have three stories worth talking about this week: Good Charlotte's Joel and Benji Madden gut the staff at BrooklynVegan and other music outlets they own, Josh Homme lights a cigarette onstage and goes off on corporate venues in front of 65,000 people, and the maker of the legendary King of Tone pedal says he might have to hang it up for good. D'Addario gets caught in an AI controversy over their new NYXL HD string demo, and Fender's cease and desist campaign over the Stratocaster body shape just keeps getting messier, now with the CEO doing damage control. We break down both stories and probably go off the rails somewhere in between THE LOST STATE SHOW is a weekly livestream at 4 pm Mondays covering music industry news, gear, production, and conversations with working musicians and audio professionals. This week on Lost State Show, we break down some pro guitarists' pedalboards from a Music Radar article. We dig into the parasocial relationship phenomenon around artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift (including fans refusing to leave their spot at the barricade to even go to the bathroom), and react to the Freedom 250 stage accident in Washington, D.C., during July 4th rehearsals and the failed event as a whole. Sony's trying to bulldoze a union at a punk merch shop in Minneapolis right after workers voted to unionize, and the timing that's... not subtle. Also, Jim Lill dropped a video saying preamps basically don't matter, and the entire audio engineering internet collectively lost it. This week in gear: Höfner gets rescued from bankruptcy while Dean Guitars' parent company files for Chapter 11 the same week, opposite outcomes. What does it say about where the guitar industry's headed in 2026?Also covering: JHS Pedals' wild story about accidentally putting a rare Dumble boost circuit into a DIY kit (now an $89 standalone pedal), and Teenage Engineering's TP-7, a $1,499 tape-style field recorder, while not a new product, blew my mind how much it costs. We talk about whether it is really worth the cost. This week on The Lost State Show, Trey and Drew each bring their own list of five albums that are objectively rough from a production standpoint, but somehow became influential in their own way. We're talking blown out mixes, hard-panned stereo disasters, bedroom drum machines, and basement recordings that launched careers. From the Beatles era stereo panning that'll throw your ears off to DIY home recordings that built cult followings. If it sounds bad but hits different, it's on the list. Ten albums total, two completely separate lists. Pull up a seat. Fender is coming for the entire guitar industry. We're breaking down the Fender Stratocaster copyright lawsuit, how a default judgment against a Chinese AliExpress seller turned into cease and desist letters aimed at boutique builders, major brands, and the future of the S-style guitar as we know it. LSL Guitars, PRS Silver Sky, Suhr, Ibanez, Harley Benton, nobody is safe. We talk the history of Fender's failed 2009 US trademark attempt, why this German court ruling is shakier than Fender's lawyers want you to think, and what it means for guitar players and builders worldwide. Streaming pays nothing, so legacy acts are cashing in on nostalgia. Panic! at the Disco reunited a year after their "final show." Smashing Pumpkins announced another tour. Dez from Black Flag did a reunion with Black Flag. When We Were Young Festival built an entire business model on emo nostalgia. We're talking about when reunions are genuine versus transparent cash grabs, random album anniversaries (10, 12, 16, 20 years, no pattern, just marketing), and which bands should've stayed dead. We put on our tinfoil hats and went full X-Files mode on Angine de Poitrine, the mysterious masked duo from Quebec that the internet can't stop talking about. Are they secretly members of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? We investigated. The evidence is compelling. The feet are damning. The toes do not lie.Yes, we found proof they received Canadian government arts funding. Yes, King Gizzard is all Australian. We didn't hear that. The conspiracy stands. Also discussed: microtonal guitar, Eastwood Guitars, Flying Microtonal Banana, and some very suspicious toes." Everyone is talking about Geese, but the truth is much weirder. Today, we’re looking at the 'Chaos' behind the curtain to see how the industry actually manufactures 'viral' stars. Is your favorite new band a plant, or just a product of a broken system?"We're diving into the Geese industry plant drama and the Chaotic Good marketing psyop that has everyone questioning if music is real anymore. From fake TikTok accounts to manipulated streaming data, we explore how major labels and marketing agencies are "gaming" the algorithm to create the illusion of grassroots success.
