This week James (and Will at the beginning) is joined by Hunter Allen, co-founder of Training Peaks, long-time elite level cycling coach to pros and US national teams, and the man who literally wrote the book on power meters back when torque measurement was just a twinkle in an SRM engineer's eye. That book was, prosaically enough, called Training + Racing With A Power Meter, and it put Hunter at the pioneering frontier of what would become the gold standard in cycling metrics: watts. Last year Hunter was back with his new book Training + Competing With A Continuous Glucose Monitor, and in this episode we discuss why continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are set to become the new power meter and how they and the sports science involved are already behind the uptick in speeds in the pro peloton. In short, CGMs can help a rider and coach work out precisely when to fuel, and to what extent, for maximum performance, and that means Pogačar and co are breaking more records. Hunter also talks about how to understand training data, the relationship between heart rate and power, managing training loads and fatigue, and how to develop better nutrition strategies to ride faster. This week, James is joined by cycling coaching guru Joe Friel. Joe started coaching amateur and elite riders in the US in the 1980s, before becoming a household name in training in 1996 as author of The Cyclist's Training Bible, arguably the most successful cycling training guide of all time and still in print today in its fifth addition. In 1999 Joe founded TrainingPeaks with son Dirk and friend Gear Fisher, the training and analysis platform that most would agree still sets the bar for digital coaching tools, used by WorldTour pros and amateurs alike. This week, James is joined by cycling journalist and author Chris Sidwells, to explore the life and times of Britain's most storied rider, Tom Simpson, on the eve of Simpson's historic World Championships win, 60 years ago, almost to the day. As Simpson's nephew (his mother was Simpson's sister), Chris is uniquely placed to tell us the tale of the miner's son from County Durham who'd become the first Briton to wear the yellow jersey in, winning countless races including three of the five Monuments along the way. This week, James and Will are joined by three-time Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy. At 16, Ed had been scouted by British Cycling’s Academy, where he came up with riders like Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas, and by 2008, aged 23, he’d won his first gold medal in the Olympic Team Pursuit. Two more golds followed in same event, at London 2012 and Rio 2016, as well as a bronze in the Omnium in 2012, making Ed one of the most successful British cyclists of all time, and one of only a handful of athletes to have won golds at three successive Olympics. Over a career spanning two decades, Ed won dozens of track medals at World and National level and broke multiple world track records, and enjoyed an illustrious career racing on the road for one of Britain’s most successful domestic teams, Rapha-Condor, before retiring in 2021. Today, Ed works as the active travel commissioner for South Yorkshire, advises British Cycling on various projects, mentors, coaches and has just written a new book, Full Gas Forever, a 40+ Cyclist’s guide to riding faster and further, co-written with Lexie Williamson. In this episode, Ed tells us about life under Dave Brailsford, having people joke about breaking his shoulders for aerodynamic gains, turning 40 and how that’s changed his cycling mentality, accidentally ‘winning’ the Fred Whitton sportive, and what it was like competing in his day versus what riders have to go through now. This week James and Will (well, mostly James) are joined by author Paul Maunder, who discusses his book, Angel of the Mountains: The Strange Tale of Charly Gaul. Born in Luxembourg in 1932, Charly Gaul turned professional aged 20, quickly establishing himself a prodigious yet mercurial talent, 'A murderous climber with a lower gear than the rest, turning his legs at a speed that would break your heart – tick tock, tick tock, tick tock,' said fellow rider Raphaël Géminiani. In 1956 Gaul won the Giro d'Italia, followed by the Tour de France in 1958 and the Giro again the following year, yet despite such success he was a fragile and curious figure, prone to mistakes, distrust and neurosis, and by 1965 he had retired, having never reached such heights again. But that's only half the story, as Angel of the Mountains tracks Gaul through a strange and tragic retirement and into a more peaceful old age. This week James and Will are joined by Stephen Roche, who in 1987 became only the second rider in history to win the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and World Championships in one season, aka the Triple Crown (pub fact: the other was Eddy Merckx in 1972, then Tadej Pogačar joined them in 2024). In this episode Stephen talks us through this incredible season, from the rollercoaster Giro that had him fearing for his safety, to crossing the line first in Austria to cap a historic season.
