James Mitchell is an Optometrist based in Western Victoria. Born and bred in Warrnambool, there was no doubt for James that he would return to his home town after completing his optometry studies. Dr Yousuf Ahmad has been a rural procedural generalist most of his professional life. Starting his career in Zimbabwe, Dr Ahmad then moved to Australia in 2000 where he continued to work in rural communities, first in Queensland and eventually settling in Sale, Victoria. With a strong interest in rural general practice, medical education, primary health management and governance, Dr Ahmad joined the RWAV Board in 2012 and was appointed as Chair of the Board in 2016. As his tenure as Chair comes to an end, we spoke with Dr Ahmad to hear about his reflections over the last eight years and where we should be turning our focus to in the future of country health in Victoria. In the first part, we heard from Dr Katrina White who recounted her involvement volunteering after the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. In this second part, we’re going to look a decade on from Black Saturday to the summer of 2020 where the Gippsland region of Victoria would come to face a two month long devastating bushfire crisis, as fires ravaged across Australia. Dr Clare Roczniok, a GP on the RWAV Locum Program, was one of the doctors deployed to Corryong to provide much needed locum relief for health services in East Gippsland. We’ll be talking to her about her involvement with the bushfires in Corryong, and why she loves doing locum work in Victoria’s rural communities. In this two part series, we will be exploring what it’s like to provide locum services in the aftermath of a natural disaster, from the point of view of two doctors who were involved in devastating bushfires a decade apart. The Black Saturday bushfires on the 7th of February 2009 were considered one of the worst bushfires in Australia’s history – destroying habitats and communities across Central Victoria. In the immediate aftermath of the fires, RWAV registered over three hundred locum GPs to volunteer in affected areas. The RWAV Locum Program was born out of this event, recognising the shortage of GPs in rural areas and the importance of locum relief to make sure healthcare is accessible in country communities. In this episode we are joined by Dr Katrina White who has been a locum GP with RWAV since the beginning of the program when she volunteered her services to Flowerdale back in 2009.
