222: Brotherhood Fit For A Norman
2026/09/21
Support the Show: Buy Me A Coffee! SEASON 9: Architects of Stability EPISODE 222: Brotherhood Fit For A Norman There’s nothing quite like a brotherhood between Normans. They loved each other, they supported each other, they protected each other…until they wanted what the other had, or until it benefited them to turn on each other. So far as I can tell, there was no real hatred there, just competition, an understanding that the stronger man should prevail. This is a story of that sort of relationship. Robert and Henry were brothers, sons of the great William the Conqueror, and they indeed cared about the other; however, when Henry saw an opening to reunite his father’s domains due to Robert’s apparent weakness in Normandy, he pounced. This episode leads to an ending that ultimately shuts the book on one of these two men. 221: End of the Age of Hauteville
2026/09/08
Donate: Buy Me A Coffee! SEASON 9: ARCHITECTS OF STABILITY EPISODE 221: End of the Age of Hauteville It began with William Iron Arm and Drogo, then passed to Humphrey, then was wrestled away by Robert Guiscard…These men all died in their turn, leaving but one remaining. Roger de Hauteville was left to keep his two rowdy nephews at arm’s length from each other while he consolidated his life’s work in Sicily and Calabria. Great Count Roger was without question the last great Norman conqueror, and his death didn’t necessarily end Norman supremacy, but it did put an exclamation point on the unbelievably dangerous and effective push for Norman conquest across the medieval world. Though his son, if you can believe it, will grow to eclipse him, Roger de Hauteville left an indelible mark on Mediterranean history. This is the final chapter of his story. 210: "Many Wept For Joy"
2026/05/29
SEASON 8: The First Crusade EPISODE 210: “Many Wept For Joy” The road from Arqa to Jerusalem was no stroll in the park, and soon the crusaders found themselves humbled at the sight of Jerusalem…at long last. The anonymous author of the Gesta Francorum wrote, “When they finally saw Jerusalem, many wept for joy.” Despite the great humility each pilgrim experienced upon seeing the city for the first time, they were still denied entry. These walls have never been easily breached, but Antioch had taught these pilgrims many valuable lessons. Each lesson would be put to the test against the holiest city of them all.  No More Paywalls!
