Daya beli yang tergerus, pendapatan yang stagnan, serta meningkatnya biaya hidup membuat konsumsi semakin sensitif dan rapuh. Fenomena seperti maraknya paylater, belanja online yang didominasi produk impor, hingga munculnya istilah Rojali dan Rohana mencerminkan perubahan perilaku konsumsi yang lebih berhati-hati dan penuh kompromi.Pada episode Speakonomics kali ini, Divisi Kajian KANOPI FEB UI berkesempatan berdiskusi dengan Andry Asmoro untuk mengurai “Kekuatan Tak Terlihat: Mengurai Kekuatan Kelas Penggerak Perekonomian Indonesia”. Diskusi ini membahas bagaimana peran kelas menengah dalam menopang konsumsi nasional, tantangan yang mereka hadapi di tengah tekanan ekonomi, serta implikasinya terhadap keberlanjutan pertumbuhan ekonomi Indonesia ke depan.

In the midst of the fast-paced and overwhelming working environments, the term “Slow Living” is becoming a meaningful counterculture among Gen Z that slowly shifted from a mere trend, to some kind of lifestyle. Might come as a coping mechanism from facing the hustle culture, activities such as running, yoga, padel, until hiking a mountain are being embraced not just as wellness trends, but as intentional choices to regain control over time, energy, and mental health. This movement can even be seen by the existence of social communities or some wellness facilities that are increasingly common in the society. However, the slow living we’re talking about is not about doing less for the sake of laziness, but about being more mindful and meaningful. Whether it’s joining a before-work yoga class or spending Sunday morning, running at Car Free Days with the community, this generation is carving out space for slowness amidst demanding schedules. Thus, with Kak Adinda Almaira, who is also enthusiastically having an interest in wellness activities while still working at PwC, we discuss how these counterculture shifts come from our generation. One thing to be sure, slow living is no longer just an aesthetic, it’s a grounded lifestyle shift that challenges the expectations of a speed-obsessed world.

Meningkatkan aliran dana untuk negara-negara berpendapatan rendah dan menengah (LMIC) dalam konteks pelestarian alam menjadi penting karena kendala fiskal yang mereka hadapi, diperburuk oleh penurunan sumber daya fiskal negara maju akibat COVID-19 dan perlambatan ekonomi. Negara-negara berkembang menanggung beban besar dalam melestarikan modal alam, meskipun manfaatnya bersifat global. Instrumen pendanaan konvensional tidak mencukupi, meninggalkan kesenjangan dalam pendanaan iklim. Kendala seperti tata kelola buruk, PDB per kapita rendah, dan mata uang tidak stabil memperburuk masalah ini. Untuk mengatasi tantangan ini, dibutuhkan instrumen keuangan inovatif yang mengaitkan pelestarian modal alam dengan pembiayaan berbiaya rendah. Pada episode Speakonomics kali ini, divisi Kajian KANOPI FEB UI berkesempatan untuk berdiskusi dengan Prof. Bambang Brodjonegoro, Ph.D. untuk membahas alternatif solusi dalam mengisi financing gap yang terjadi pada negara-negara berkembang, khususnya Indonesia.

By definition, dualism is a state of being dual or consisting of two parts; it is reflected in the coexistence of two systems, such as in the core regions and periphery (small) regions. Dualism is closely linked to inequality, especially when discussing countries with large diversity among their regions. This is evident in Indonesia, with a diverse background of the country, it is clear that there is evidence of dualism in growth and MSME. It is important to understand endogenous forces, such as agglomeration, and the structure of economic relations between regions as part of prevailing institutions when addressing interregional inequality. Similarly, in the context of MSMEs, the focus is on their perceptions of social capital and various policies. In the first episode of the Book Dialogue in 2024, KANOPI FEB UI had the opportunity to invite Prof. Iwan Jaya Azis, as Senior Economist and Professor at the University of Indonesia and Cornell University, to have a dialogue about the book "Periphery and Small Ones Matter: Interplay of Policy and Social Capital", which he wrote and published with Bank Indonesia. The results of this discussion will reveal that in policy making, especially to address deep-rooted problems such as inequality, there is often a gap between what institutions are trying to address with their policies and society's perspective.

Risiko fragmentasi geopolitik membuat dedolarisasi atau diversifikasi semakin terakselerasi. Sejumlah negara memilih untuk mulai meninggalkan dolar dalam transaksi bilateral. 10 negara anggota ASEAN baru-baru ini menyepakati untuk mengurangi transaksi menggunakan dollar AS, dengan menggunakan skema perjanjian local currency settlement (LCS) maupun dengan local currency transaction (LCT). Lalu, apakah strategi pemerintah dalam upaya mengurangi ketergantungan terhadap dolar AS berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap stabilitas nilai mata uang dan arus perdagangan ekspor-impor? Serta bagaimana masa depan dari skema ini? Dalam episode ketujuh Speakonomics ini, Kanopi FEB UI berkesempatan mengundang Bapak Ibrahim Nugroho, Ekonom Departemen Pengembangan Pasar Keuangan Bank Indonesia, untuk berdialog mengenai tren diversifikasi yang sedang marak terjadi dalam transaksi perdagangan Indonesia dan negara lainnya, terutama Asia.

Biang kerok kemiskinan Indonesia dibintangi oleh komoditas primadona di Indonesia, yaitu rokok. Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) pada tahun 2021 melaporkan bahwa rokok adalah komoditas yang turut ambil andil dalam garis kemiskinan di Indonesia. Di tengah berbagai dampak kesehatan yang mungkin timbul, rata-rata rumah tangga miskin rela mengonsumsi 11 bungkus rokok setiap bulan. Tingginya konsumsi rokok ini menjadi penghambat dalam memutus rantai kemiskinan. Persoalan ini kemudian mendorong pemerintah untuk turun tangan dalam pengendalian rokok dengan wacana penerapan FCTC atau Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, kerangka yang mengatur beberapa hal krusial seperti iklan promosi dan sponsor, kemasan dan pelabelan, serta harga dan cukai rokok. Walaupun FCTC telah gencar diterapkan oleh negara-negara Asia, perkembangan kebijakan ini mengalami stagnasi di Indonesia – menjadi sebuah kerangka yang tak kunjung ditandatangani atau diratifikasi. Beberapa pihak terutama dari penggiat industri rokok beranggapan bahwa pengimplementasian FCTC di Indonesia dapat memberikan dampak buruk bagi perekonomian Indonesia. Pertanyaannya adalah apakah benar pengesahan FCTC dapat berdampak buruk terhadap perekonomian Indonesia? Dalam episode pertama Paper Dialogue di tahun 2023, KANOPI FEB UI berkesempatan mengundang Bapak Abdillah Ahsan, selaku kepala Lembaga Demografi FEB UI, untuk berdialog mengenai paper “FCTC Ratification, Smoking Prevalence, and GDP per capita: lessons for Indonesia and the rest of the world,” yang beliau tulis bersama dengan beberapa peneliti lainnya. Hasil diskusi ini akan mengungkapkan bahwa persepsi terkait rokok yang selama ini beredar tidak sepenuhnya akurat.

Dua kasus diatas menggaris bawahi dua hal yang sangat penting di dalam isu perekonomian Indonesia sekarang, yaitu komponen biaya hidup dan tingkat pendapatan masyarakat. Data menunjukkan bahwa kenaikan biaya hidup, seperti biaya pendidikan, kesehatan, dan kepemilikan aset mengikuti tren yang melampaui kenaikan gaji masyarakat pada umumnya. Maka, apa saja program pemerintah yang dapat dibenahi untuk membantu perekonomian jangka panjang masyarakat? Selain itu, bagaimana masyarakat harus mempersiapkan financial management dan masa depan perekonomian mereka? Dalam episode keenam Speakonomics ini, Kanopi FEB UI berkesempatan mengundang Bapak Irman Faiz, Assistant Vice President dan Macroeconomist di Bank Danamon, untuk berdialog mengenai tren kenaikan biaya hidup dari perspektif makroekonomi dan persiapan yang harus dibuat oleh masyarakat.

Youth entrepreneurship is a type of entrepreneurship that is mainly practiced by the youth, which helps young people drive job generation and acquire “economic independence”.  Thus, a greater rate of job generation and economic independence obtained through youth entrepreneurship can reduce youth unemployment in Indonesia.   Despite the significant benefits of youth entrepreneurship, its current state in Indonesia has not reached its full potential. The main challenges that are present in the environment of youth entrepreneurship in Indonesia are -- among other things -- its access to finance and incentives, human capital and entrepreneurship culture, business development support and infrastructure, policy and regulatory framework, and innovation and technology. This episode of the Paper Dialogue will focus on the state of Indonesia’s Youth Entrepreneurship, its challenges, and its potential improvements. 

Implementing universal health insurance has its fair share of challenges. Indonesia operates one of the world’s largest universal health insurance schemes, but only one-third of its informal workers are receiving government subsidies for insurance premiums, due to barriers to enrollment, weak administrative state capacity, and inaccuracies in the state’s civil registries. This situation incites several questions: How does Indonesia’s current economic condition affect its national health insurance program? What are the methods to increase its enrollment? “The Challenges of Universal Health Insurance in Developing Countries: A Case of Indonesia’s National Health Insurance”, an academic paper published in the American Economic Review strives to answer these questions. In this very first Paper dialogue, we invite Benjamin Olken, the Jane Berkowitz Calrton and Dennis WIlliam Carlton Professor of Microeconomics in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the contributors of this paper.
