Friends of the Rosary, Today, as on every October 15, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582), the first woman Doctor of the Church. Born in Ávila, Spain, and dying in Alba, Spain, in the sixteenth century, with the help of St. John of the Cross, she reformed most of the Carmelite convents and founded seventeen. She endured intense criticism from her sisters, as she insisted that they live simply, in imitation of Christ’s poverty on the cross. She shared, “Prayer means being on terms of friendship with God, frequently conversing in secret with him who, we know, loves us.” On prayer, she reached the highest degree; through prayer, she obtained such knowledge of divine things. At the age of eighteen she joined the Carmelite Order and chose Christ as her heavenly Spouse. St. Teresa of Jesus, honored by the Church as the "seraphic virgin" (virgo seraphica) and reformer of the Carmelite Order, ranks first among women for wisdom and learning. She is called doctrix mystica, doctor of mystical theology. Her writings are still considered classic works on mysticism, and all her later teachers have drawn from them, e.g., Francis de Sales, Alphonsus Liguori. Characteristic of her mysticism is a subjective, individualistic approach; there is little integration with the liturgy and social piety, and thus she reflects the spirit of the sixteenth and following centuries. When she lost her mother at twelve, she implored Mary for her maternal protection. In 1533 she entered the Carmelite Order; for eighteen years she suffered physical pain and spiritual dryness. Wonderful were the exterior and interior manifestations of her mystical union with God, especially during the last decade of her life. As she was dying, she often repeated the words: "Lord, I am a daughter of the Church!" St. Teresa composed the following well-known lines: Let nothing affright thee,Nothing dismay thee.All is passing,God ever remains.Patience obtains all.Whoever possesses GodCannot lack anythingGod alone suffices. Friends of the Rosary, Today, on the memorial of Saint Callistus I, Pope and Martyr, we read in the New Testament (Luke 11:42-46) how Jesus warns against religious seriousness that forgets justice, love for God, and mercy toward others. He said to the Pharisees: "You pay tithes of mint and of rue and of every garden herb, but you pay no attention to judgment and to love for God. These you should have done, without overlooking the others. Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in synagogues and greetings in marketplaces. Woe to you! You are like unseen graves over which people unknowingly walk." "You impose on people burdens hard to carry, but you yourselves do not lift one finger to touch them." We ask the Lord to lead us by His Spirit today. Let my faith bear real fruit in love, patience, and kindness. Friends of the Rosary, On October 13, 1917, Our Lady appeared for the sixth time in Fatima, Portugal, and performed the Miracle of the Sun before 70,000 witnesses. From May through October 1917, the Lady appeared to and spoke with the three young peasant children, Francisco, Jacinta, and Lucia, on the 13th day of each month. News of these apparitions began to spread throughout the region. The children recounted that the Virgin promised that God would grant peace to the entire world if Her requests for prayer, reparation, and consecration were heard and obeyed. When it became known that the Holy Virgin would visit the children for the last time on October 13, 1917, promising a sign that would convince the world she had appeared, many pilgrims made plans to attend. Though the region had endured three days of torrential downpour, nearly 70,000 people journeyed through the heavy rain and mud to the site of the previous apparitions to witness the predicted miracle. Many were unbelievers whose sole intent was to discredit the visionary children’s stories. Suddenly the clouds parted, and the sun appeared between them in the clear blue sky, like a disk of white fire. The people could look at the sun without blinking, and the huge ball began to dance with dizzying, sickening speed, flinging out all sorts of brilliant colors that reflected off the faces of the crowds. The fiery ball continued to gyrate in this manner three times, and plunge in a mighty zigzag course toward the earth. The crowd was terrified, fearing this was the end of the world. However, the sun reversed course and, retracing its zigzagging course, returned to its normal place in the heavens. All of this transpired in approximately ten minutes. After realizing they were not doomed, the crowd began laughing, crying, shouting, and weeping ecstatically. Many discovered that their previously drenched clothing was perfectly dry. It was "The Miracle of the Sun." The heart of Our Lady confided to the children in July 1917 a “Secret” in three parts. The first part was a frightening vision of hell, “where the souls of poor sinners go,” and contained an urgent plea from Our Lady for acts of prayer and sacrifice to save souls, with particular emphasis on praying the rosary and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The second part of the “Secret” specifically prophesied the outbreak of World War II and contained the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communists’ totalitarianism. The third part was revealed in 2000, coinciding with the beatification of Francisco and Jacinta. It did not contain any striking or cataclysmic prediction; instead, the vision supported and affirmed the immense suffering endured by witnesses to the faith in the last century of the second millennium. Sister Lucia, the surviving member of the Fatima trio, confirmed that in the vision “the Bishop clothed in white,” who prays for all the faithful, is the Pope. As he makes his way with great difficulty towards the Cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred (bishops, priests, men and women religious and many lay people), he too falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a hail of gunfire. It is possible that the vision predicted the 1981 attack on Pope John Paul II’s life. The Pope has always credited the Virgin for his survival. Or it may be a portrayal of the Church’s continued struggle against secularism and anti-Christian movements and a continuing call to prayer, sacrifice, and devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. Friends of the Rosary, Today, we celebrate the memorial of St. Carlo Acutis (1991-2006), the First Millennial Saint. He was a Catholic Italian teenager, a gamer and computer programmer who loved soccer and the Eucharist, and, as Pope Francis described him, a model of holiness in a digital age. Today, he is the patron Saint of youth, the internet, and computer programmers. Acutis, Carlo Acutis was born May 3, 1991, in London, though his family moved to Milan shortly after. From a young age, Carlo had a special love for God, even though his parents weren’t especially devout. His mom said she had been to Mass only for her First Communion, her confirmation, and her wedding, but young Carlo's unique and unexplained devotion led to her deep conversion. The priest promoting his cause for sainthood noted that Carlo “managed to drag his relatives, his parents, to Mass every day. It was not the other way around; it was not his parents bringing the little boy to Mass, but it was he who managed to get himself to Mass and to convince others to receive Communion daily.” He had a gift for empathy and was known for defending kids at school. He tried to stay disciplined and play games for only an hour a week, even though he really wanted to play more. He had a great devotion to Mary and loved to pray the rosary.  He was fascinated by Eucharistic miracles. Using his research, he began creating what would eventually become a website on this topic. Carlo was concerned by people growing distant from the Church and the sacraments. He said, "The more often we receive the Eucharist, the more we will become like Jesus, so that on this earth we will have a foretaste of heaven." At age 15, Carlo was diagnosed with an untreatable leukemia. “I offer all the suffering for the Lord, for the Pope, and the Church.” Carlo died from his illness on Oct. 12, 2006. At his request, he was buried in Assisi because of his love for St. Francis. His tomb has been opened, and his intact body lies in repose in a glass tomb where he can be venerated by pilgrims. He is displayed in jeans and a pair of Nikes, the casual clothes he preferred. “For the first time in history we will see a saint dressed in jeans, sneakers, and a sweater,” said the rector of the Sanctuary of Spoliation in Assisi, where Acutis’ tomb is located. “This is a great message for us; we can feel holiness not as a distant thing but as something very much within everyone’s reach because the Lord is the Lord of everyone.” Archbishop Domenico Sorrentino of Assisi said, “Carlo is a boy of our time. A boy of the internet age, and a model of holiness of the digital age." Also, today marks the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which will conclude on October 12, 2027. Pope Leo XIV declared a Guadalupan Jubilee Year to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the new Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. Ave Maria! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, We hear today, Sunday, twenty-eighth in ordinary time, (Matthew 22:1-14) how Jesus spoke to the chief priests and eldersin parables, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a kingwho gave a wedding feast for his son." The Lord invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. The second time, some ignored the invitation and left. The rest mistreated servants and killed them. Then, the servants went out into the streets and "gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests."Why would people ignore an invitation, feel annoyed and threatened, or react violently to a great feast from this extraordinarily generous king?Their behavior exemplifies the irrationality of sin, a false understanding of freedom, and the refusal to let ourselves be loved by our Creator and Redeemer.But God will never cease preparing and providing this rich feast of his Son. Friends of the Rosary, Today is the memorial day of Saint John Henry Newman, Priest and Doctor of the Church; Saint Denis, Bishop and Martyr; and his Companions, Martyrs; and Saint John Leonardi, Priest. In the Gospel (Luke 11:15-26), Jesus warns against divided hearts. Evil is not overcome by argument or appearance, but by staying gathered with Him. The Lord said, "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." "When an unclean spirit goes out of someone,it roams through arid regions searching for restbut, finding none, it says,‘I shall return to my home from which I came.’But upon returning, it finds it swept clean and put in order.Then it goes and brings back seven other spiritsmore wicked than itself who move in and dwell there,and the last condition of that man is worse than the first." Friends of the Rosary, Our Lady has been honored under this title since the founding of the Trinitarian Order by St. John of Matha in the twelfth century. St. Maximilian Kolbe speaks of Our Lady in a similar way, as the Good Mother who provides a Good Remedy. In the Gospel today (Luke 11:5-13), Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock with trust, because the Father gives good gifts, above all the Holy Spirit. “And I tell you, ask and you will receive;seek and you will find;knock and the door will be opened to you.For everyone who asks, receives;and the one who seeks, finds;and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.What father among you would hand his son a snakewhen he asks for a fish?Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?If you then, who are wicked,know how to give good gifts to your children,how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spiritto those who ask him?” St. Paul (Galatians 3:1-5) reminds us that we receive the Spirit by faith, not by proving ourselves through works of the law. Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 7, is the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary, honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and the power of the Rosary. This celebration, formerly known as the Feast of Our Lady of Victory and the Feast of the Holy Rosary, was instituted to honor Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on October 7, 1571, a favor due to the recitation of the Rosary. Pope St. Pius V and all Christians had prayed the Rosary for victory, and then he instituted this celebration. This victory saved Europe from being overrun by the forces of Islam. The Rosary, or the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is one of the best prayers to Mary, the Mother of God. Lepanto, perhaps the most complete victory ever achieved over the Ottoman Empire, on October 7, 1571, is commemorated by the invocation "Help of Christians," inserted into the Litany of Loreto. Leo XIII added the invocation "Queen of the most Holy Rosary, pray for us," to the Litany of Loreto. The Feast is, in reality, a great festival of thanksgiving for the signal and countless benefits bestowed upon Christendom through the Rosary of our blessed Queen. In modern times, successive popes have urged the faithful to pray the Rosary. The Rosary, a "contemplative and Christocentric prayer, inseparable from the meditation of Sacred Scripture," is "the prayer of the Christian who advances in the pilgrimage of faith, in the following of Jesus, preceded by Mary," said Pope Benedict XVI. Friends of the Rosary, In the Gospel today (Luke 10:38-42), Martha and Mary remind us that service matters, but it must stay rooted in listening to Jesus. Christ the Lord was in the household of Bethany with his friends, Martha, Mary, and Lazarus—although this passage in Luke does not mention them. Mary was sitting beside the Lord at his feet, listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” The teaching is clear: serving with love, but also teaching us to pause, listen, and choose the better part: His presence. Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 5, 2026, is the memorial of Saint Faustina Kowalska, Virgin (1905-1938), a Polish nun chosen by Jesus to remind the world of the mystery of God's merciful love and the devotion to Divine Mercy. It is the message, as old as eternity, of the Lord's love for all people, especially sinners. Jesus said to Faustina, "Today I am sending you with my mercy to the people of the whole world." On February 22, 1931, Jesus appeared to Faustina as the King of Divine Mercy. He asked her to have a picture painted of him as she saw him — clothed in white, with red and white rays of light streaming from his heart. The rays represent the blood and water that flowed from Jesus' side on the cross. Under the image are the words, "Jesus, I trust in you." The sisters in her own convent thought that Jesus could not possibly have selected her — after all, a poor and uneducated peasant girl — for this great favor. Church theologians, too, doubted her word. Jesus told Faustina that he loved her obedience and that his will would be done in the end. In June 1934, an artist completed the painting of the Divine Mercy according to her instructions, and it soon became a focus for devotion. Faustina continued to record Jesus's appearances in her diary. The diary was translated into English and published in 1987 with the title Divine Mercy in My Soul. About 10 years later, Faustina contracted tuberculosis, and she was given the job of gatekeeper. There, she showed mercy to the poor people who came to the convent seeking food. Once, Jesus came to the door as a poor young man. After he had eaten the soup and bread Faustina gave him, she recognized him. Jesus told her he had come to experience her tender love and mercy with great joy. Faustina was canonized by the first Polish pope, John Paul II, on April 30, 2000. Friends of the Rosary, God lovingly planted and cared for His vineyard, asking laborers — all of us — for fruit: justice, faithfulness, and love. But He warned that the Kingdom would be entrusted to those who bear good fruit — the faithful and grateful servants. As we read today (Matthew 21:33-43), Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people: "Did you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." In our Sunday prayer, we ask the Lord to make our hearts fruitful, free us from anxiety, and teach us to pray with trust. We follow Paul, who reminds us today (Philippians 4:6-9) not to live in anxiety but to bring everything to God in prayer. Friends of the Rosary, Lord Jesus said to the seventy-two disciples who returned rejoicing, saying that even the demons were subject to them — as we read today (Luke 10:17-24): "Do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven." Later, turning to the disciples in private, he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see.For I say to you,many prophets and kings desired to see what you see,but did not see it,and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it." Indeed, Christ Jesus is giving us wisdom to see how the Creation has been designed and works. "I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,for although you have hidden these thingsfrom the wise and the learnedyou have revealed them to the childlike.Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will." Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 2, 2026, the first Friday of the month, is the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels, who watch over us, lead us closer to God, and help us to attain salvation. In His providence and in His intimate concern for each person's welfare, God gives us guardian angels to serve as protectors and guides throughout our lives, from the moment the soul is infused at conception. Each person on earth has a guardian whose mission is to conduct us safely through the perils of our earthly life into the joys of the eternal life in heaven. When we seek to win the joys of heaven, we can count on their powerful help. In unseen ways, the angels — servants and messengers of God — help us on our earthly pilgrimage by assisting us in work and study, helping us in times of temptation, and protecting us from physical danger. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that "the existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls 'angels' is a truth of faith (328)." Saint Francis de Sales said, “Specially love and revere the Guardian Angel of the diocese in which you live, those of the friends who surround you, and your own. Commune with them frequently, join in their songs of praise, and seek their protection and help in all you do, spiritual or temporal.”Today's feast appeared in Spain during the sixteenth century. It was extended to the universal Church and made obligatory in 1670. In today's Gospel, God reminds Job that His wisdom surpasses human understanding. The Psalm says God knows and guides us completely. In the second reading (Matthew 18:1-5, 10), Jesus points to childlike humility and reminds us that the little ones are watched over by angels before the Father. "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. Friends of the Rosary, Today, October 1, the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus (1873-1897), Virgin and Doctor of the Church, more popularly known as "the Little Flower." Born in Alençon, France, to Saints Louis and Zélie Martin, this nineteenth-century cloistered Carmelite reminds us that holiness can be lived through small acts done with great love — her “Little Way” of confidence and love. Thérèse's mother died when she was four, and at age fifteen she followed her two older sisters into the Carmel at Lisieux, France. For the next nine years she lived a very ordinary religious life. There are no miracles, exploits, or austerities recorded of her. Enduring extreme penances, Thérèse declared, “It is sufficient to acknowledge one’s nothingness and to abandon oneself like a child to God’s arms." She attained a very high degree of holiness by carrying out her ordinary daily duties with perfect fidelity, having a childlike confidence in God's providence and merciful love, and being ready to serve others at all times. She also had a great love of the Church and a zeal for the conversion of souls. She prayed especially for priests. She died of consumption on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24, and was canonized in 1925. She has never ceased to fulfill her promise: "I will pass my heaven in doing good on earth." “My God, I love you!” was her final prayer.
