Friends of the Rosary, The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. This devotion proposes the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as the model of Christian family life, emphasizing love, obedience, unity, and faith. In the words of His Holiness Pope Leo XIII, "Nothing truly can be more salutary or efficacious for Christian families to meditate upon than the example of this Holy Family, which embraces the perfection and completeness of all domestic virtues." The Holy Family models for us what family life should exemplify. It is a school of virtue for both parents and children. There we find God, and learn how to connect with God and with others. The family is where love is freely given without self-interest. It is where we learn to love, to pray, and to practice the gift of charity. Pope John Paul II has said, “The family, more than any other human reality, is the place in which the person is loved for himself and in which he learns to live the sincere gift of self” (Nov. 27, 2002). Friends of the Rosary, Today, February 3rd, the Universal Church offers two saints, Blaise and Ansgar, for separate celebration as an Optional Memorial. To St. Blaise (or Blaise) (d. 320), many cures are attributed. From the eighth century, he has been invoked on behalf of the sick, especially those afflicted with illnesses of the throat. St. Blaise was a physician and Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia, and was martyred under Licinius. St. Blaise is included in the list of Fourteen Holy Helpers.On this day, the Church celebrates a "Blessing of the Throats" in honor of St. Blaise.  St. Ansgar (801-865) became known as the "Apostle of the North" for his great evangelical work in Denmark and Sweden. He was Bishop of Hamburg, Germany, and then of Bremen, Germany. Known for his great preaching, working miracles, and being greatly devoted to the poor and sick. Friends of the Rosary, Today, February 2, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This celebration, which takes place forty days after the birth of Jesus, is also known as Candlemas Day, since the blessing and procession of candles are included in the Mass. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the blessing and procession of candles on this day. Jesus’ presentation signifies God’s entrance to His temple. Soon after the Baptists’ birth, God made man enter His temple, presenting Himself to those who were truly seeking Him. Attached to “Candlemas Day”, we also celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life, founded by Pope St. John Paul II in 1997. That’s because the consecrated men and women are to be the light in the world, imitating Jesus, the Light of the World. On this day, the Church expresses its gratitude to all in the community who dedicate themselves in a special way to prayer, and to those with a particular religious vocation to the contemplative life. In the figures of Simeon and Anna, Jesus’ presentation in the temple reminds us that prayer and contemplation are well-spent time. Only those who pray and offer penance, like Simeon and Anna, are open to the breath of the Spirit. This feast of the Presentation has a strong Marian dimension: On one hand, Simeon’s prophecy emphasizes Mary’s sufferings. Pope John Paul II taught that, “Simeon’s words seem like a second Annunciation to Mary.” In the previous Liturgical Calendar, it was called the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. indicating the renewal of her total offering to God for the accomplishment of His Divine Plan. On February 2nd, a secular tradition unfolds: Groundhog Day, well known to schoolchildren and adults alike. The fate of Spring hangs in the balance as a burrowing animal looks for its shadow. Friends of the Rosary, From the Gospel of St. Matthew 5:1-12a, in this Fourth Sunday in ordinary time, we receive the Beatitudes from the Lord. And He said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit,for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." The significance of the "poor in spirit" is revealed in the Beatitudes. This expression points to those whose hearts and consciences are intimately directed to Our Lord and who are tried by moments of suffering and difficulty. They don’t confide mainly in themselves but in God. The poor in the Bible are the humbled, just, and meek, those who bear a burden on their shoulders, but are given God’s favor. They are called blessed and happy because God’s merciful and compassionate gaze rests on them. The poor detach themselves from the possession of persons and things, and above all, of themselves. The poor don’t find security in the gods of this world, like success, power, or pride, but in the Lord God in Heaven. Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Friends of the Rosary, Today, January 31, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. John Bosco (1815-1888), Apostle of Youth and the founder of the Salesian Society (the Salesians), named in honor of St. Francis de Sales, and of the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Auxiliatrix, Help of Christians. Born near Castelnuovo in the archdiocese of Turin, Italy, in 1815. His father died when John was only two years old, and it was his mother, Margaret, who provided him with a good humanistic and Christian education. St. John Bosco, Don Bosco, was an enlightened educator, innovator, and leader. He had no formal system or theory of education; rather, he formulated one based on "reason, religion, and kindness." His methods centered on persuasion, authentic religiosity, and love for young people. Despite receiving criticism and violent attacks from the anti-clericals, he conducted workshops for the tradesmen and manual laborers, schools of arts and sciences for young workers, and schools of the liberal arts for those preparing for the priesthood. In 1868, there were 800 students involved in this educational system. This great apostle of youth died on January 31, 1888. Many referred to him as "the new St. Vincent de Paul." Friends of the Rosary, In today’s Gospel (Mark 4:26–34), the parable of the mustard seed is revealed. Christ Jesus said, "To what shall we compare the Kingdom of God,or what parable can we use for it?It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground,is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth.But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plantsand puts forth large branches,so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade." God makes very great things starting from the very small in a gradual process, never drawing attention to Himself. At God's prompting, we start doing small things by planting the seed. We take small steps and do not worry about the attention or the praise we attract. The faithful sow the seed and take risks, leaving the rest to the mercy and providence of God. St. Thomas — whose feast day we celebrated yesterday — said, "It is from the union of the different appetites in man tending towards the same object that peace results." In the Garden of Eden, with man’s virgin nature, there was a harmony that was the divine radiation of original justice. The order was perfect in Adam, and all was perfectly harmonized. But sin came into the world, and all this admirable order was overthrown. Man’s different appetites started to function against each other. The flesh conspired against the spirit, and the spirit against the flesh. And until the order is re-established, peace cannot be in the heart, and we will be separated from Him by an abyss. "O Lord, and our hearts are ever restless until they rest in Thee." By having taken our sin upon Himself, Jesus restored to us God's friendship. Friends of the Rosary, Today, January 28, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), a genius thinker, philosopher, and theologian, who earned the title of the Angelic Doctor, a designation that, as Pope Benedict XVI said, expresses “the sublimity of his thought and the purity of his life.” Considered the Dominican Order's greatest glory, his Summa Theologiae is a masterly synthesis of faith and reason and the classic text for a comprehensive theological formation. Born in Aquino, Italy, he led a remarkable life of prayer and remained modest, a perfect model of childlike simplicity and goodness. He cherished a tender devotion to St. Agnes, constantly carrying relics of this virgin martyr on his person. He died in 1274, at the age of fifty, in the abbey of Fossa Nuova. Friends of the Rosary, Saint Angela of Merici († 1540), the saint we honor today, was the foundress of the Company of Saint Ursula, the Congregation of the Ursulines, the first teaching order of women religious. Orphaned at age ten, Angela became a Franciscan tertiary and was awakened with the desire to form a company of virgins to serve God. She wrote, "Although at times they will have troubles or anxieties, nevertheless, this will soon pass away and be turned into gladness and joy. And then, the suffering of this world is nothing in comparison with the blessings which are in Paradise." "How many lords, queens, and other great persons there are who, with the many riches and possessions they have, will not be able to find true relief in some extreme need; and yet these little ones, poor as they are, will find consolation and comfort." Friends of the Rosary, Timothy and Titus — the saints that we honor today — shared with Paul the Apostle his ministry to the Gentiles. He described Timothy as "my true child in our common faith" (Ti 1:4), while Titus was the child of a devout Catholic woman and her pagan husband. Paul told the Corinthians, “I urge you, be imitators of me. For this reason, I am sending you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord; he will remind you of my ways in Christ Jesus, just as I teach them everywhere in every church” (1 Cor 4:16-17). The two saints and Paul’s co-workers became Bishops in the apostolic age of the early Church. They were trustworthy men who shared the faith and thrived as amazing witnesses to Christ. The tradition states that Timothy died a martyr’s death by stoning at about the age of eighty, after opposing a procession in honor of the pagan goddess Diana. Ave Maria! Come, Holy Spirit, come! Friends of the Rosary, Today’s Gospel (St. Matthew 4:12-23) presents Christ Jesus as the Light, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy by dispelling the darkness of sin and freeing man from the obscurity in which he is enclosed. The light expresses God’s involvement in human history as He manifests Himself as ‘The Light’ that disperses the darkness. In God’s light, everything assumes a new significance, bringing abundant joy and great rejoicing. The light is God’s initiative, taking action towards a wounded humanity and performing His merciful love. This dynamic is expressed through Christ Jesus' call of the first Apostles. He invited them to abandon the nets in a sudden interruption in their lives and trust themselves totally to the Lord for a new ‘catch’, a new definitive horizon. He chooses them with an unequivocal call, ‘Follow Me’. His call is a turning point in our lives. At the Last Supper, the end of His earthly life, Jesus reminds His disciples, "you did not choose me, no, I chose you." (Jn 15:16). We ask the Lord for the gift of a true conversion of our hearts, enabling us to receive Christ as the only Light to follow. Christ is the only one who dispels the darkness within and around us. As a young man, he became profoundly disturbed when contemplating the possibility of his soul spending eternity in hell. After weeks of barely eating and sleeping, he finally prayed before a miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, entrusting his life entirely to God’s merciful love. This experience formed the basis of his pastoral work as a bishop in post-Reformation Geneva and inspired his influential writings. His masterly Treatise on the Love of God influenced Saint Thérèse of Lisieux and Saint John Bosco. His Introduction to the Devout Life is a classic guide to holiness for laypeople. Friends of the Rosary, All human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. He is the model on which all human beings are created. He looked upon himself and wished that other beings would share in His own happiness. That's why the greatest gift is life. It is better to be alive than never to have been in existence. Through Divine Revelation and natural intelligence, we become aware of the value of the gift of life. This leads to protecting the life of the unborn and those women who might feel tempted or forced to commit abortion, knowing the devastating consequences they might suffer. Friends of the Rosary, Today, January 22, in all the dioceses of the U.S., the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children is celebrated. We pray for the complete legal restoration of the right to life. Abortion is a sinful violation of the dignity of the human person. During the liturgical celebration of Mass, we give thanks to God for the gift of human life. Through the mystery of the incarnation, Christ Jesus confirmed the dignity of the body and the soul which constitute the human being, wrote Pope Benedict XVI. “It is only in the mystery of the incarnate Word that the mystery of man truly becomes clear.” (Gaudium et Spes). God created man in his image and likeness, and by becoming one of us, made it possible for us to become “sons of the Father,” and “sharers in the divine nature.” The dignity of each creature is elevated into a broader horizon of life. It’s the boundless and incomprehensible love of God for the human being. “Human life is a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory,” writes Benedict XVI. Friends of the Rosary, Today, January 21, the faithful celebrate the feast of St. Agnes, one of the most notorious martyrs of ancient Rome, along with St. Cecilia. She was a young virgin martyred under the Roman emperor Diocletian around the year 304.Devotion to her is of ancient standing, and two churches in Rome commemorate her witness. Agnes is invoked in the canon of the Mass, in the Eucharistic Prayer I. The name of "Agnes" means "lamb-life." The lamb is the symbol of the innocence of the virgin-martyr. Agnes, a girl of twelve, freely died for Christ. When she was commanded to offer incense to false Gods, she raised her hand and made the Sign of the Cross. And when the son of the Roman prefect offered to marry her, she replied: "The one to whom I am betrothed is Christ Whom the angels serve. For Him alone I keep my troth, to Him I surrender with all my heart." Today, we also celebrate the feast of Our Lady of High Grace, in Spanish la Virgen Maria de la Altagracia. The image of Our Lady of Altagracia was crowned twice: in 1922 by Pope Pius XI, and in 1979 by Pope John Paul II, who, during his visit to Santo Domingo, personally crowned the image with a golden silver tiara, his personal gift to the Virgin, the first evangelizer of the Americas.
