Dalyce Wilson is a Black-Indigenous photographer, writer and multimedia artist based in San Diego. She was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 7 and has spent the last 22 years, dismantling the stigmas and stereotypes of living with this chronic illness. Wilson received her BA in Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, and then lived abroad in Northern Ireland to receive her MFA in Photography. After her Master's course, she spent three years living in Thailand, traveling, teaching English and doing commissioned photography work. She returned to the USA in 2020 and started her business Blackbird Multimedia where she takes on commissioned writing, photography, videography and artistic projects. During Black History month, Bolus Maximus spoke with 7 men to better understand their thoughts on some very important topics. They spoke about their relationship with healthcare professionals and the trust they have for their providers - or lack thereof. "If your doctor isn't helping you - fire them. They work for you!" - this is not possible for everyone, but you are your own best advocate.  The need for mentorship within the black community has never been greater and some of our contributors talk about their personal experience and how life could have been different if they had a diabetic role model.
