THINGS FALL APART , CHAPTER 8
2026/08/27
In the devastating aftermath of Ikemefuna’s death, Chapter 8 strips away Okonkwo’s fierce exterior to reveal the silent unraveling beneath. For three days, Umuofia’s fiercest warrior cannot eat, sleeps fitfully, and drowns himself in palm wine—tormented not just by grief, but by the shame of feeling it at all.
In this episode, we break down:
The Anatomy of Denial: How Okonkwo weaponizes toxic stoicism against his own humanity, chastising himself for mourning “like a woman.”
The Voice of Reason: Okonkwo’s tense confrontation with Obierika, who delivers a chilling moral warning about the wrath of the Earth goddess.
Love & Gender in Umuofia: The touching story of Ogbuefi Ndulue and his wife Ozoemena, challenging Okonkwo’s narrow view of power and partnership.
Cultural Nuance & Foreshadowing: The ritual of bride-price negotiations over broomsticks, and the village’s first eerie, passing mention of “chalk-white men.”
Join us as we explore the philosophical heart of Achebe’s masterpiece—where tradition, moral conscience, and pride collide.
THINGS FALL APART CHAPTER 5
2026/07/20
Host: "Hey everyone, welcome back to the podcast. Today we’re diving into Chapter 5 of Things Fall Apart, and honestly, the tension is real.
The New Year Festival is finally here, which should mean good food, wrestling matches, and a break from the fields. But in Okonkwo’s household, everyone is walking on eggshells. Okonkwo is completely consumed by his fear of looking weak or lazy, and it boils over into pure rage. First, he beats his second wife, Ekwefi, over a banana tree. Then, in a moment that will leave you holding your breath, he actually fires a gun at her.
Somehow, the family has to dust themselves off and go join the rest of the village for the big wrestling matches at the playground. It’s a chapter full of cultural beauty, but it shows us just how volatile Okonkwo's domestic life really is. Let's get into it."
THINGS FALL APART CHAPTER 7
2026/07/20
Episode Segment: The Turning Point of Umuofia
Three years of peace and family growth come to a shattering halt in Chapter 7 of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart.
Ikemefuna has fully integrated into Okonkwo’s household, becoming a beloved older brother to Nwoye and a source of deep, unspoken pride for Okonkwo himself. The family is thriving, momentarily distracted by a rare and joyous harvest of locusts that blankets the village.
But the celebratory mood is instantly crushed when Ogbuefi Ezeudu arrives with a grim decree from the Oracle: the time has come for Ikemefuna to be killed. Ezeudu leaves Okonkwo with a haunting piece of advice: "Bear no hand in his death, for he calls you father."
Driven by his absolute terror of looking weak or resembling his effeminate father, Okonkwo ignores the warning. He joins the party of men leading Ikemefuna out of the village under the guise of returning him home. When the fatal blow is struck, it is Okonkwo himself who finishes the deed.
The chapter closes with a chilling aftermath: Ikemefuna is gone, Okonkwo is hollowed out by his own hand, and Nwoye is left permanently fractured—his trust in his father, and the traditions of his culture, snapped forever. It’s the moment the first major crack appears in Okonkwo’s world, and the downward spiral truly begins.

We must set forth at dawn .
2026/06/03
The book you are referring to is the monumental memoir by Nigerian Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, titled "You Must Set Forth at Dawn".
The motif of the "dawn traveler" and the open road is central to the first pages of this book. It functions both as a literal description of Soyinka's early years traversing Nigeria by car and as a powerful symbol for his life as an activist.
