Ep 29 | MediaCast: Sapna Desai, CMO of ManipalCigna, on Marketing Health Insurance - a category most people tend to avoid
2026/09/30
Send us Fan Mail
Eighty-two per cent of urban Indians say they experience stress. One per cent describe their health as poor. Sapna Desai, Chief Marketing Officer of ManipalCigna Health Insurance, calls the gap between those two numbers a stress paradox — and in this episode of MediaCast she explains why a country normalising the thing that is wearing it down is a problem for marketers, not only for doctors.
Host Pavan R Chawla, Founder-Editor of MediaBrief.com, takes her through the ManipalCigna India Health Quotient, a YouGov study across 2,600 respondents in 16 cities that measured physical, mental, social, workplace and financial health together. Among its findings: the youngest cohort, aged 25 to 34, scored lowest of all age groups; the financial dimension scored lowest of all dimensions; and two in five people said the pursuit of money is damaging their health.
Sapna has spent over two decades building service brands in high-trust categories, across advertising, financial services and telecom. She explains what a standalone health insurer does and how it differs from a general insurer, why she believes a service brand is built at the moment of vulnerability rather than in the advertising, and how research findings become campaigns — including work with Manoj Bajpayee on the true value of health, and regional voices such as Baichung Bhutia in the northeast.
IN THIS EPISODE
• Four leadership principles, beginning with the idea that expertise has an expiry date
• What a standalone health insurer does, and how it differs from a general insurer
• ManipalCigna today: around 21 million lives covered, 125 branches, a 96% claim settlement rate
• Why a service brand is built at the moment of vulnerability
• A ₹1.5 lakh crore industry heading for ₹3 lakh crore by 2030, and the pull of tier 3 and tier 4 markets
• The ManipalCigna India Health Quotient, and what it set out to measure
• The stress paradox, the 25-34 cohort, and the six-point well-being gap between the insured and the uninsured
• The health debt trap
• Marketing a category people actively avoid
• A practical checklist for the first-time health insurance buyer
and more.
India might look healthy on the outside, but it's really struggling on the inside: Sapna Desai

Ep 26 Mediacast | Ajey Maharaj of Fortis Healthcare on Trust, Transparency, and 'Patient First' Care
2026/02/11
Send us Fan Mail
This, the 26th episode of Mediacast focuses on the critical intersection of trust, transparency, and reputation in the Indian healthcare sector, through a conversation between Ajey Maharaj, Head of Corporate Communications and PR at Fortis Healthcare Ltd, and Pavan R Chawla, show host and Founder-Editor of Mediabrief.com.
Ajey Maharaj explores how rising patient awareness and the integration of AI are reshaping decision-making, while explaining why the foundational 'Patient First' philosophy is essential for sustaining long-term credibility in a high-stakes industry. He details the strategic evolution of reputation management, noting that the traditional 24-hour news cycle has been replaced by a 30-minute digital window. In this environment, Ajey highlights why absolute transparency and ethical communication are the only effective tools for safeguarding a brand.
By leveraging clinical excellence and evidence-based data—published on international platforms like ICHOM—Ajey Maharaj demonstrates how Fortis builds trust across its 33-hospital network and a diverse international patient base. The conversation also delves into the human side of healthcare, where Ajey explains that despite technological advancements, the physical reassurance of a doctor often accounts for 50% of the healing process.
He also answers a question about the evolving role of PR partners at the client-C-suite table, arguing that they must move beyond being vendors to become a strategic, extended arm of the management team. This involves providing proactive counsel on government relations, policy shifts, and meaningful storytelling.
Ajey Maharaj further reflects on the impact of purpose-driven awareness campaigns, such as the 'DIY' breast cancer initiative with the Indian judiciary and national 'Basic Life Skills' training for first responders. These initiatives illustrate his belief that healthcare communications should empower the public while reinforcing the brand's commitment to community welfare. Finally, Ajey defines the ultimate ROI of trust: the moment a patient can depend entirely on their provider, leading to the referrals and reputation that sustain an enterprise.

Brand Engineer Dr Ashish Kaul on reimagining business through Indian stories with Folklore India
2025/09/08
Send us Fan Mail
This episode of the MEDIACAST Podcast from Mediabrief.com features Dr Ashish Kaul, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer of Folklore Entertainment India. Ashish is a strategic thinker, brand engineer and a respected author and communications professional, and is in conversation with Pavan R Chawla, Founder-Editor of Mediabrief.com.
Ashish explores the urgent need for brands to rise above the sameness in the marketplace. He argues that brands cannot be treated like instant noodles and warns that in today’s hyper-competitive environment, mediocrity is being normalized. Too many companies are rushing to market, hoping to get lucky instead of investing the time and imagination needed to create originality.
He discusses the use of tools like Canva and AI generators, which were meant to democratize creativity but are often used as shortcuts. This, he warns, accelerates monotony and strips brands of originality unless leaders bring real thought and intent.
Ashish also examines mimicry in branding. From fintech apps that look alike to quick-service restaurants using near-identical colors, he explains why imitation may help brands gain quick recognition but can hollow out credibility. He asks whether mimicry in fast food chains, such as copying the look of global chicken QSR giants, reflects smart positioning or lazy branding.
On Performance marketing, Ashish reflects on CEOs who lean heavily on it and questions whether some are mistaking tactical wins for the deeper outcomes that strategic brand leadership delivers. He urges companies to see performance marketing not as a replacement but part of a broader vision.
Most importantly, Ashish highlights the originality available to Indian businesses if they embrace cultural strengths. He notes that many brands shy away from Indian design traditions and typography due to an inferiority complex, choosing instead to imitate global palettes. By rediscovering Indianness and anchoring identities in storytelling traditions, he believes brands can achieve authenticity and differentiation.
Ashish challenges shortcuts and quick fixes, urging a return to originality, cultural authenticity, and patience in building brands that matter. Available now on Mediabrief.com, YouTube, and top global and Indian podcast platforms.

Arun Pandey of Rhiti Sports on the sales and marketing mandate for govt of Goa’s Great Goa Games - India’s first online lottery
2024/10/08
Send us Fan Mail
Arun Pandey, co-founder of Rhiti Sports and a prominent figure in India’s sports marketing industry, is taking on a new mandate - the nationwide sales and marketing responsibilities - for a new venture that aims to reshape the lottery gaming: Great Goa Games (GGG), India’s first government-sanctioned online lottery.
On this episode of Mediacast from Mediabrief.com, Pandey discussed his role in leading the sales and marketing efforts for GGG. Set to launch on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, during Navratri, "GGG combines transparency, fairness, and innovation to modernize India’s lottery system." GGG Lottery, India’s first fully licensed and regulated online lottery platform, offers players "a secure and convenient way to engage in state-approved lotteries."
As the first Indian online lottery authorized by the Directorate of Small Savings
and Lotteries, Government of Goa, GGG Lottery "is committed to
trust, credibility, and transparency in every transaction". The platform says it is “dedicated to democratizing the lottery experience, to provide endless
opportunities for players to win big with our diverse selection of lottery games. “
Arun spoke with Pavan R Chawla, Founder-Editor of Mediabrief.com. He emphasized that GGG is more than just another lottery—it ensures complete transparency, from ticket purchases to live result announcements. He urges responsible gaming, encouraging participants to avoid spending at the cost of essential needs."
GGG addresses the lack of transparency in current lottery systems by using cutting-edge technology. The platform will make all transactions and results visible in real time, ensuring fairness for all players, regardless of investment.
Tackling Bigger Challenges
GGG launches amid debates over skill-based vs. chance-based games. Pandey estimates India loses $100 billion annually due to unregulated gaming. He believes GGG can reverse this trend and contribute to public welfare.
Responsible Gaming Focus
Pandey stresses responsible gaming and aligns GGG with the government’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals, launching campaigns to raise awareness of lottery risks and responsibilities.
As India moves towards a regulated lottery and gaming ecosystem, GGG offers a model of fairness and transparency. Arun Pandey’s leadership will be key in blending innovation and responsibility to transform the industry.

This episode of the MEDIACAST podcast series from Mediabrief.com features Jahid Ahmed, Senior Vice President and Head of Digital Marketing at HDFC Bank, in conversation with Pavan R Chawla, Founder-Editor of Mediabrief.com. We raise a toast to not just Jahid's innovative End of Scam Sale campaign that raises awareness about digital financial fraud, but also celebrates his excellent and effective approach to Digital Marketing. This episode has been produced as Vodcast on YouTube, and a Podcast available on all top global and Indian podcast directories.
The End Of Scam Sale campaign has stood apart for bearing a crucial cyber-fraud awareness message and warning. Jahid’s strategic approach, leveraging deep fake technology to simulate fraudsters, showcases HDFC Bank's commitment to consumer protection. The campaign is a demonstration of how HDFC Bank and FCB Kinnect beautifully balanced both, creativity and responsibility, in the highly regulated banking industry, and how their collaborative efforts resulted in a thought-provoking, award-worthy campaign that gained widespread reach and positive reception.
So effective was this campaign that it grabbed a million views on launch, and actually had more than 70 media publications reporting, in all seriousness and alarm, that celebrity actor Nora Fatehi had become a victim of cyber fraud at the hands of a fictitious brand! (One, that it was revealed, eventually, had actually been created for the campaign that also deployed deep fake video.)
Jahid also details the creation of deepfakes and fake domains to educate individuals about online fraud, focusing on awareness rather than product sales.
Jahid speaks of the importance of discussion and collaboration between the two partners – HDFC Bank’s Digital Marketing team, and FCB Connect . What shines through is Jahid’s belief that creativity, authenticity, and consumer-centric approaches are crucial to driving impactful campaigns and fostering partnerships.
Jahid also speaks of HDFC Bank's comprehensive digital marketing strategy, which is driven by driving business with by deploying a mix of social media engagement, the empowering of talent with their ongoing learning and development, along with the bank's substantial investment in digital initiatives. And much more.
