Description

Award winning podcast* 🥈. Talking about life as a British born Chinese (BBC)/British Asian. The struggles that I've had to deal with whilst growing up in my mum and dad's takeaway in the 1980s/1990s. My parents are immigrants from HK/China and moved to the UK when they were teenagers. I was brought up being Chinese at home and English when I was outside of home - it felt confusing at the time as I couldn't find a sense of belonging. But now I am much older, I am proud of my Chinese heritage and I am proud to be British. I just want to share my story with people.* Silver award at British Podcast Awards 2022 in 'Moment of the Year' category. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S4 Ep1: Food and restaurant writer/editor David Jay Paw
2024/03/07
I chat with David Jay Paw who is a food and restaurant writer/editor. We talk mostly on food. Heading straight in to his role at Resy and collaborating with some amazing people such as Amanda Nguyen and Susie Bubble who have written articles to share their stories on food and restaurant. Speaking of restaurants, we have a conversation on Somsaa and Ivy Asia, how they misrepresented ESEA (East and Southeast Asian) food and the work that David did to call this out. My favourite part of the show is talking about David's dad who is in a band back in the 80's in Burma called The Wild Ones (check them out on YouTube). If you're listening don't forget to share the show with your friends. S3 Ep2: Chinese takeaway/restaurant kids - this one's for you!
2022/09/18
I know I always say on all my shows 'this is a very special episode'.  But this time, I REALLY mean it!  It's special for a few reasons: * It was my first live show with an audience * People paid £14.06 for a ticket (thanks guys) * Proceeds were donated to London Chinese Community Centre and the event raised just over £2K. * Two amazing guests, John Li from Dumpling Shack and food writer and Takeaway book author Angela Hui shared a stage with me. * There were raffle prizes (is it even an event if there's no raffle prizes?  Asking for a friend, LOL). Angela, John and I have all been brought up in our parents Chinese takeaway/restaurant and we share stories from behind the counter.  It was heartwarming and personally for me, it felt like therapy.  If only I knew there were more takeaway kids when I was growing up!! This event is part of ESEAHM (East and Southeast Asian Heritage Month).  Thanks to Besean for hosting this for the 2nd year running. A few insta pages to check out! Hey!!  I'm back with a new season.  In this episode I speak to my fiancé eWan Smith as we  talk about how we met, the adventures that we've had and we probably over share when we talk about the mini break up that we had a few years ago.  I also asked him if he has yellow fever (spoiler alert, he doesn't) but it did boost a conversation on how yellow fever is dangerous on ESEA women. You can find both eWan and I are on Instagram: @Chinese Chippy Girl @mui_mui_records Image by Georgina Leung (thank you leng lui). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This is a special episode to promote the latest Pixar animation of Turning Red - releasing on Disney+ from 11 March 2022.  Wanna know more about Turning Red - give this a listen 🎧 and then watch the animated film 🍿 I was so excited to be given the opportunity to interview Domee Shi who is the Director and Lindsey Collins who is the Producer.  A short and snappy interview.  But it was great to chat to them. S2 Ep5: Being Chinese and being Gay

Hello! In this episode, we speak with Siu Kee.  A BBC (British born Chinese) who grew up in Glasgow/Barnsley.  Also a fellow takeaway kid!  I feel he ticks all the boxes for Asian golden child.  Academic, a lawyer and the only son in his family.  Sounds good on paper right?  But tune in to this episode as we hear from Siu Kee on his identity issues and speaking openly about his sexuality. S2 Ep3: Our Chinatown Special | ESEA Heritage Month
2021/09/14
I’m absolutely delighted to collaborate with Chinatown London for my latest episode where I talk to Lucy, Managing Director of See Woo Group and Emily who runs Cuppacha and Taiyakiya. Lucy and Emily spoke about their journey of running a business in the heart of London.  It was  so nice to chat with them and share our experiences of what Chinatown London means to us and discussing how diverse it is with more and more ESEA shops and food stalls/restaurants opening. For me, Chinatown London brings a lot of memories of when my mum and dad used to take me here when I was at school.  Shopping for dried vegetables that mum would put in her soup and buying endless supplies of Chinese bakery.  When I first moved to London in 2007, there were times when I missed my family, I would go to Chinatown London for comfort and it’s always been such a joyous place. I have Chinatown London to thank for my entire London experience. In light of ESEA Heritage Month, Chinatown London have put together a campaign #OurChinatown to explore what Chinatown means to people who have stepped foot in Chinatown London.  What’s your greatest memory of Chinatown London? You can message me on Insta or email me [email protected] 📧 Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

S2 Ep1: ESEA representation in kids books with Maisie Chan
2021/07/18
I'm back from my break of podcasting and my first guest of series 2 is Maisie Chan.  Maisie is a BBC (British born Chinese) childrens author.  She has recently launched 2 books, Danny Chung does not do maths (or Danny Chung sums it up in the US) and Tiger Warrior.  Also, Amy wants a pet which is my daughter's favourite book.  Maisie also runs Bubble Tea Writers Network that supports and encourages ESEA writers in the UK. We also talk about a short story called Brian Wong who was never, ever wrong (written by David Walliams and illustrated by Tony Ross) on how the story has used harmful stereotypes to depict the Chinese community.  Which is why the ESEA community need better representation to show the real culture and not the negative stereotypes or the model minority myth. Please follow Maisie on https://www.instagram.com/maisiechanwrites or checkout her website https://www.maisiechan.com/ for more info on her books and Bubble Tea Writers Network.
