In this episode, I spoke with my friend Jerusalem who is a current senior at NYU, where I attended undergrad and am currently receiving my master’s. This conversation was sparked by the removal of Spring Break by NYU and of other universities in the US this semester, which felt to me like an example of how the needs of university students are often ignored.  Jerusalem & I touched on a number of important topics like unrealistic expectations for college students, the college admissions scandal, being intentional about our relationships & more! This episode is a continuation of last week’s episode on deconstructing #DefundthePolice and the importance of arts in education.  In this episode I spoke with Eric Williamson, a music teacher at the same NYC public school as last week’s guest, Ava. In our conversation, Eric and I were able to connect as black educators to discuss the importance of using our identities to teach in the classroom. We talked about using music to unpack trauma, especially with our young student, music as therapy & so much more. Ava Lian is a Pre-K through 5th grade art teacher at P.S.32 in Brooklyn, NY.  In this episode of Candidly, Caitlyn, I spoke to Ava about her experience teaching art in NYC public schools, and during the pandemic. We talked about #DefundthePolice and the need for re-allocation of NYPD funds back into education. In this conversation with Dr. Rachel Bervell of @theobgynproject on Instagram, we spoke about the disconnect between public health and medicine (& its results on health outcomes especially in reproductive health) and the history of eugenics and experimentation on BIPOC women in this country (as well as the erasure of indigenous women from that history)  We also talked about the importance of reckoning with the history in order to affect the change needed to address racial and ethnic health disparities today.
