In the previous episode of Madhushala, we visited Amritsar and Lahore, where Bachchan’s poem resonated in somebody’s heart several miles away, unbeknownst to him - until a chance meeting with that beautiful heart in Bareilly. So, what makes Bareilly unique? As destiny will have it, the same Bareilly brings a new, fresh turn to Bachchan's life. But this fresh, fragrant breeze was to come all the way from Lahore (still a part of India before partition). Last few episodes, we have discussed women in Bachchan's life and in this connection, we spoke ‘Champa’, his friend Karkal's wife, ‘Shyama’, poet's first wife who came into his life like ‘Joy’, and ‘Iris’ which remained a mirage for the poet. These were the days when Champa and then Shyama's death and one tragedy after another had left him so traumatized. In such a situation, an incident at his poetry-meet in Bareilly shook the poet to the core - the suicide of a lover of his poetry! This episode also talks about an english poet A.E. Houseman. इन दिनों हम बात कर रहे हैं बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में आने वाली स्त्रियों की और इसी सिलसिले में बात की थी उनके मित्र कर्कल की पत्नी चम्पा की, कविराज की पहली पत्नी श्यामा जो उनके जीवन में जॉय की तरह आई, और बात की थी आइरिस की जो कवि के लिए एक मृगतृष्णा ही बनी रही। ये वो दिन थे जब चम्पा और उसके बाद श्यामा की मृत्यु और एक के बाद एक दुखद घटनाओं से इतना क्षत विक्षत हो चुके थे कि स्वयं को एक भग्न हो चुका खंडहर समझने लगे थे। ऐसे में बरेली की कवि गोष्ठी में एक ऐसी घटना घटती है, जिसने कविराज को भीतर तक झकझोर दिया - उनकी कविता के एक प्रेमी की आत्महत्या! We are discussing women in Bachchan’s life in these episodes. We spoke about Bachchan’s first wife “Shyama” in the previous episode and how she shaped poet’s life. In this episode, we are talking about “Iris”, who remained a mirage, a mystery in Bachchan’s life. In the previous episode, we started a discussion on women in the life of Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan and how they influenced his life and poetry. We started with ‘Champa’, who he called ‘Dryad of the Trees’. In this episode, we are talking about Bachchan’s lesser known first wife ‘Shyama’. पिछले अंक से हमने शुरुआत की थी एक चर्चा की – बच्चन बाबू के जीवन में कुछ महत्वपूर्ण स्त्रियों पर। सबसे पहले बात की थी चम्पा की, जो उनके बचपन के मित्र कर्कल की पत्नी थी और उन्होंने बच्चन बाबू को किस तरह प्रभावित किया। इसी सिलसिले को आगे बढ़ाते हुए, आज बात करते हैं श्यामा की। Poems in this episode: धुँधली-सी आवाज बुलाती ऊपर से, पर पंख कहाँ है, (याद कीजिए वृक्ष परी) छलना-सी धरती है मुझको और मुझे अंबर छलिया-सा। तन के सौ सुख, सौ सुविधा में मेरा मन बनवास दिया-सा। उसके उस सरलपने से मैंने था हृदय सजाया, नित नए मधुर गीतों से उसका उर था उकसाया। उस कल्पनाओं की कल कल्प-लता को था मैंने अपनाया; बहु नवल भावनाओं का उसमें पराग था पाया। मंद हास-सा उसके मृदु अधरों पर जो था मँडराया; औ’ उसकी सुखद सुरभि से - प्रति ‘निशि’ समीप खिंच आया मनाकर बहुत एक लट मैं तुम्हारी - लपेटे हुए पोर पर तर्जनी के पड़ा हूँ, बहुत ख़ुश, कि इन भाँवरों में - मिले फ़ॉर्मूले मुझे ज़िंदगी के, भँवर में पड़ा-सा हृदय घूमता है, - बदन पर लहर पर लहर चल रही है। न तुम सो रही हो, न मैं सो रहा हूँ, - मगर यामिनी बीच में ढल रही है। उठा करता था मन में प्रश्न - कि जाने क्या होगा उस पार निवारण करने में सन्देह - मज़हबी पोथे थे बेकार चले तुम, पूछा, हैं! किस ओर? - कहा बस तुमने एक ज़बान तुम्हें थी जिसकी खोज तलाश - उसी का करने अनुसंधान श्‍यामा रानी थी पड़ी रोग की शय्या पर - दो सौ सोलह दिन कठिन कष्‍ट में थे बीते, संघर्ष मौत से बचने और बचाने का - था छिड़ा हुआ, या हम जीतें या वह जीते। एक समय संतुष्ट बहुत था पा मैं थोड़ी-सी हाला, भोला-सा था मेरा साकी, छोटा-सा मेरा प्याला, छोटे-से इस जग की मेरे स्वर्ग बलाएँ लेता था, विस्तृत जग में, हाय, गई खो मेरी नन्ही मधुशाला!।१०८। -------------------- Thanks for listening :-) Do write a review and send your comments. In the previous episode, we spoke about “Shanti path” in Madhushala, shared a beautiful piece from Rahi Masoom Raza's book Topi Shukla, some things about one carefree Hindi poet Pandey Bechan Sharma ‘Ugra’, and a story about the English poet Shelly and Keats. In the previous episode, we had talked about the importance of dissatisfaction in life and told why Bachchan had to leave his well-organized life and go for military training, and some poems related to the same. Today’s episode talks about the inherent dissatisfaction of man and why our poet had to undergo military training at one time. In the previous episode, we spoke about Bachchan’s meeting with Sarojini Naidu and introduction with Nehru – Indira family. There was also a poetic introduction of Mr Bachchan. In the ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠previous episode⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠, we spoke about poet’s unquenched thirst and about his work as a special officer of Hindi at the Ministry of External Affairs (Videsh Mantralaya). In this episode, a poem about why people worry much. (⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠read more here⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠) ⁠पिछले अंक⁠ में बात की थी कि पायोनियर प्रेस में काम करते हुए बच्चन जी को किस तरह कई दफ़ा अपमान सहना पड़ता था और मधुशाला में उसके बारे में वो क्या कहते हैं और समाज और साहित्य की दुनिया से वो अपने पुराने अपमानों का जुर्माना कैसे वसूलते थे। आज के अंक में एक मजेदार किस्सा कि सरोजिनी नायडू के साथ इंदिरा नेहरू से बच्चन परिवार का किस तरह से परिचय हुआ था। सिर पर बाल घने, घुंघराले - काले, कड़े, बड़े, बिखरे-से, मस्ती, आजादी, बेफिक्री, बेखबरी के हैं संदेसे । माथा उठा हुआ ऊपर को - भौंहों में कुछ टेढ़ापन है, दुनिया को है एक चुनौती, - कभी नहीं झुकने का प्रण है। नयनों में छाया-प्रकाश की - आँख-मिचौनी छिड़ी परस्पर, बेचैनी में, बेसबरी में - लुके-छिपे हैं सपने सुंदर!! सिर पर बाल कढ़े कंघी से - तरतीबी से, चिकने काले, जग की रूढ़ि-रीति ने जैसे - मेरे ऊपर फंदे डाले। भौंहें झुकी हुईं नीचे को, - माथे के ऊपर है रेखा, अंकित किया जगत ने जैसे - मुझ पर अपनी जय का लेखा। नयनों के दो द्वार खुले हैं, - समय दे गया ऐसी दीक्षा, स्वागत सबके लिए यहाँ पर, - नहीं किसी के लिए प्रतीक्षा। ------------- अपने अंगूरों से तन में हमने भर ली है हाला, क्या कहते हो, शेख, नरक में हमें तपाएगी ज्वाला, तब तो मदिरा खूब खिंचेगी और पिएगा भी कोई, हमें नरक की ज्वाला में भी दीख पड़ेगी मधुशाला (७५) -------------------- Welcome to Madhushala Podcast (मधुशाला), based on Harivansh Rai Bachchan's epic poetry, written in 1935 and part of the trilogy of Madhubala and Madhukalash.
