Why Do I Brace for Bad News When Things Are Going Well?
2026/10/05
Send us Fan Mail Have you ever noticed that when something good happens, your brain immediately starts imagining what could go wrong?  That experience is sometimes called foreboding joy, and it can make it surprisingly difficult to enjoy good moments. In this episode, anxiety coach Cynthia Coufal explains why happiness can sometimes trigger worry, how parents can unknowingly brace for their child's next struggle, and how to practice staying present without pretending that difficult things never happen.  Find my podcast Email me:  [email protected] Text me:  785-380-2064 More information
Who’s Steering Your Thoughts? How to Stop a Negative Spiral
2026/09/28
Send us Fan Mail Have you ever missed one class, had one unproductive day, or received no response to a message, and suddenly your brain decided everything was falling apart? One small event can quickly become a much bigger story: “You’re getting behind.” “Here we go again.” “You always mess things up.” “You’re never going to figure this out.” In this episode, I share a conversation with a college student who worried that she was “slipping” after missing one planned day of classes. Although she already knew how to catch up, her brain connected that one absence to difficult experiences from her past. This is what anxious brains do. They search for possible problems and use old experiences to predict what might happen next. However, the loudest thought in your mind is not necessarily the truth. Using my Perception, Process, and Plan framework, I explain how to: • Separate the facts from the frightening story your brain is creating • Understand what your inner critic is trying to protect you from • Respond to negative thoughts without fighting or believing them • Redirect your mind toward a more helpful thought • Choose one practical next step instead of shutting down • Use your strengths and values to move forward Intentional thinking is not toxic positivity. It does not mean pretending that nothing is wrong. It means recognizing what is true, removing the extra story your brain has added, and deciding what you want to do next. We cannot always stop anxious or critical thoughts from showing up, but we do not have to give them the steering wheel. If your teen or young adult needs help managing anxious thoughts, overcoming overwhelm, and following through on what matters to them, I provide personalized anxiety coaching for young people ages 14–24. Sleep Is Part of the Work: Why Rest Matters for Teens and College Students
2026/09/21
Send us Fan Mail   What if staying awake longer to study is actually making it harder to remember what you learned? Sleep is not time taken away from studying, emotional regulation, or productivity. It is part of all three. In this updated episode, Cynthia explains how sleep affects learning, memory, anxiety, mood, decision-making, and academic performance. You will also learn how much sleep teens and young adults need, why teenagers naturally become tired later at night, and how to use the 4 N’s of Anxiety to improve sleep without expecting a perfect bedtime routine. Cynthia shares realistic strategies for managing screens, caffeine, naps, inconsistent schedules, dorm-room distractions, racing thoughts, and all-nighters. She also explains when sleep difficulties may require support from a healthcare provider. Whether you are a teenager, college student, or parent trying to help a tired young person, this episode will remind you that sleep is not wasted time. It is part of building a healthier, more independent life.  Bonus Sleep Meditations  Struggling with anxiety in your family? College Admissions Without the Pressure with Lisa Goldstein
2026/09/14
Send us Fan Mail   The college admissions process can bring out anxiety in both teens and parents. Even when parents are trying to help, comparison, expectations, repeated reminders, and the urge to take over can quietly add more pressure.  In this episode, I talk with Lisa Goldstein, college consultant, former school counselor, and author of The Compassionate College Process: Guiding Your Teen With Less Stress and More Joy.  Lisa shares how parents can support their teen without making one acceptance letter feel like the measure of their child’s future or their own success as a parent. We discuss choosing colleges based on fit rather than prestige, recognizing a teen’s individual strengths, avoiding the “shoulds,” and knowing the difference between helping and taking over.  You’ll also hear practical ways to:   Reduce comparison during the admissions process  Help an overwhelmed teen break applications into manageable steps  Encourage meaningful activities instead of résumé-building for appearances  Support your teen’s independence while remaining available  Manage your own anxiety so it does not become additional pressure  Protect your relationship during your teen’s final years at home  The goal is not simply to help your teen get into college. It is to help them move through the process with confidence, healthy coping skills, and a stronger understanding of who they are.   Connect with Lisa Goldstein: Your College Process Learn more about Lisa’s book: The Compassionate College Process Sign up for the Live Q & A Session with Lisa Learn more about Cynthia’s anxiety coaching for teens and young adults: www.cynthiacoufalcoaching.com    Struggling with anxiety in your family? The Grief Parents Don’t Expect When a Child Starts College
2026/09/07
Send us Fan Mail   When your child begins college, you may expect to feel proud and excited. You may not expect to grieve. Parents can miss the daily conversations, familiar routines, and certainty of knowing what is happening in their child’s life. They may also miss being needed in the same way. That grief can appear as sadness, but it can also look like worrying, checking, reminding, fixing, or feeling hurt when a student begins making decisions without them. In this episode, I explore the emotional transition from parenting a teenager to parenting a young adult. You will learn how to distinguish between supporting your student and soothing your own anxiety, decide when to step in or step back, and begin shifting from manager and problem-solver to consultant, coach, and safe place. Your role is not disappearing. It is changing from the person who handles everything to the person who helps your child believe they can handle more.  Struggling with anxiety in your family? The Grief No One Talks About When Students Leave for College
2026/08/31
Send us Fan Mail Starting college brings independence, new friendships, and exciting opportunities. It also requires students to leave behind familiar people, routines, roles, and even the version of themselves they knew in high school.  In this episode, I explain why the transition to college can involve real grief, even when a student is excited to be there. I explore how grief may appear as homesickness, anger, withdrawal, procrastination, constant calls home, or doubts about choosing the right school.  You will also learn how to use the Four N’s of Anxiety, Notice, Normalize, Neutralize, and Next Best Step, to support your student without immediately fixing the problem or dismissing what they feel. I also discuss how to distinguish normal transition discomfort from signs that a student may need additional mental health support.  Struggling does not automatically mean your student chose the wrong school. Sometimes it means they are grieving what they left behind while learning how to build a new life.  Find my podcast Email me:  [email protected] Text me:  785-380-2064 More information

Why Adulting Is So Hard, Even When You Raised an Independent Kid
2026/08/20
Send us Fan Mail Why does adulting feel so hard, especially when a young person first leaves home?  College freshmen are expected to manage their schedules, responsibilities, relationships, stress, and decisions, often without the structure they have relied on for 18 years. Even a responsible student can become overwhelmed when so many changes happen at once.  In this episode, Cynthia explains why young adults may struggle to ask for help, even when they need it, and why receiving support does not make them less independent. She also shares her own experiences with leaving college, supporting a daughter through college anxiety, and navigating the many transitions that continue throughout adulthood.  If your college freshman is stumbling through the transition into adulthood, The Resilient Launch can give them personalized support as they learn to manage life more independently.  Find my podcast Email me:  [email protected] Text me:  785-380-2064 More information
Getting to College Is Easy. Thriving There Is the Real Skill.
2026/08/03
Send us Fan Mail School's out, the dorm shopping list is done, and move-in day is getting closer. But there's one thing almost nobody talks to incoming freshmen about: how you're actually going to manage once you get there.  In this episode, I sit down to break down what the first semester of college really looks like, including four phases nearly every freshman moves through: the Honeymoon Phase, the Dip, the Defining Window, and the road to feeling grounded again. Leslie Rose and I share our own stories, including a college dropout story that might surprise you, and get into the real, practical stuff that makes the difference: making friends when you don't know a single person, why sleep might be the most underrated academic strategy out there, how to build a routine that actually sticks, and how to ask for help before things reach crisis level.  Whether you're a soon-to-be freshman feeling excited, terrified, or some very specific mix of both, or a parent wondering how to support without hovering, this episode gives you a roadmap for what's ahead.  Check out Leslie Rose Coaching:   Website: leslierosecoaching.comInstagram: instagram.com/leslierosecoachingFacebook: facebook.com/leslierosecoaching   Struggling with anxiety in your family? Why Your Child’s Planner Isn’t Working (and What to Try Instead)
2026/07/27
Send us Fan Mail  Have you ever bought your child a planner, calendar, or organizational system you were sure would help, only to watch it sit unused?  That does not necessarily mean your child is lazy, unmotivated, or unwilling to get organized. The system may simply not fit how they think, work, and respond to pressure.  In this episode, I share how I helped one student uncover the missing piece in her organization system and create deadlines that work with her strengths instead of against them. We also explore body doubling, shorter work sprints, internal motivation, and why personalized support is often more effective than handing every student the same planner.  You’ll learn three questions you can ask your child to discover:   When they are most productive  What usually gets in their way  What small strategy they can test this week  The goal is not to correct or control your child. It is to stay curious and help them build a system they can use independently, especially as they prepare for college.   If you have an incoming college freshman, join the priority list for The Resilient Launch. I’ll soon invite 10 families into this personalized coaching program designed to help college freshmen manage their time, stress, responsibilities, and first-year transition with greater confidence and independence.   Find my podcast Email me:  [email protected] Text me:  785-380-2064 More information
Before the Crisis Call: What Your College Freshman Needs to Know
2026/07/20
Send us Fan Mail  Your college freshman’s first visit to the tutoring center should not happen two days before they fail a class. They should not have to figure out how to contact the counseling center for the first time while they are already in crisis.  In this episode, I share the campus resources every incoming freshman should locate before classes begin, including academic advising, tutoring, counseling, student health services, and professor office hours. I also explain why asking for help is an adult skill and what parents can say when their student calls home overwhelmed, instead of immediately stepping in to fix everything.  A little preparation now can help your freshman take the next step when they are stressed, sick, falling behind, or unsure what to do.  Get the free Before You Call Home College Help Finder: https://cheerful-writer-462.kit.com/b5264c8b8c  Join The Resilient Launch Priority List to be one of the first families to hear when enrollment opens: https://cheerful-writer-462.kit.com/8f5b8b99a3  Find my podcast Email me:  [email protected] Text me:  785-380-2064 More information
The Identity Shift Nobody Warns Parents About
2026/07/11
Send us Fan Mail Your incoming college freshman is preparing for new classes, a new roommate, and life away from home. But there is another major transition happening that families rarely talk about. Both you and your child are going through an identity shift at the exact same time. Your student is learning how to manage freedom, responsibilities, relationships, stress, loneliness, and decisions without the same support they had at home. Meanwhile, you are moving from being the manager of their daily life to becoming the parent of an increasingly independent adult. That shift can bring sadness, worry, conflict, hurt feelings, and confusion for both of you. It can even feel like something has gone wrong when this tension is actually a normal part of the transition. In this episode, I talk about: • Why the college transition affects parents as much as students • The difference between being needed and staying connected • Why your freshman may temporarily regress after leaving home • How to prepare for homesickness, loneliness, and overwhelm • When to check in and when anxiety may be driving your communication • How to talk with your student before move-in • Why being proactive is more effective than waiting for a crisis I also share part of my own college story and explain why students need more than academic skills to successfully navigate their first year. Your child has spent years learning how to be a student. They may not have been taught how to manage all the emotional, practical, and personal responsibilities that come with becoming an adult. That is why I created The Resilient Launch, a high-touch coaching program for incoming college freshmen and their parents. Students receive personalized support, practical tools, group coaching, and a plan built around their strengths, values, skills, and interests. Parents also receive guidance so they can stay connected without constantly reminding, rescuing, or managing. What Are We Missing When Young People Are Hurting?
2026/06/29
Send us Fan Mail   After several recent suicides of teens and young adults in my local area, I wanted to talk about the bigger question so many of us are asking: What are we missing? In this episode, I share thoughts from more than 35 years of working with young people, including the need for real connection, emotional regulation, coping skills, school belonging, sleep, trusted adults, and support before a crisis. This is not a conversation about blame. It is a conversation about prevention, connection, and helping young people know they are not alone. If you or someone you love is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress in the U.S., call or text 988, or use chat at 988lifeline.org/chat.   Struggling with anxiety in your family? Why Your Teen May Need Someone Besides You
2026/06/22
Send us Fan Mail   In this episode, I’m joined by Cristina, a former client who is now out of college, working as a mechanical engineer, living on her own, and building her adult life. Cristina and I talk about what it really feels like to launch into college and young adulthood. We discuss the excitement of freedom, the shock of change, finding your people, rebuilding confidence after heartbreak, setting boundaries, and why even capable young adults need support. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is Cristina’s perspective on coaching. She shares what it was like to have a neutral adult who was not her parent, someone she could say the messy things to, sort through her thoughts with, and begin to trust herself again. This conversation fits perfectly with my Resilient Launch work because getting ready for college is not just about dorm rooms, laundry, schedules, and grades. It is about helping young people build emotional regulation, self-trust, resilience, confidence, and the ability to keep going when life feels uncertain. If you are parenting a high school senior, college student, or young adult who looks like they are doing fine but may still need support, this episode will help you understand why that support matters.   Struggling with anxiety in your family? Routines Over Motivation (Why Freedom Traps Most Freshmen)
2026/06/15
Send us Fan Mail What happens when a highly structured 35-hour high school week suddenly drops to 12 hours of college class time? You get 150 hours of unstructured space—and for most incoming young adults, that "freedom" quickly turns into an administrative trap.  In this week's episode, I unpack the critical difference between emotional motivation and permanent life infrastructure. Discover the three baseline household routines your teen needs to master this summer under your roof, and learn how to help them build a proactive campus "fire escape map" before they ever experience their first semester crisis.  In this episode, we discuss: Why freedom without a baseline routine turns into acute mental health strain. Shifting your teen from following a track built by other people to managing a track built by themselves. How parents accidentally stunt independent growth by "taking up the slack" when forms or chores get messy. The exact breakdown of the summer Adulting checklist: Laundry cycles, fuel cooking, and personal burn rates. Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Free Action Sheet: Download The Adulting 101 Resource Grab your family's copy here: https://cheerful-writer-462.kit.com/31fa159e4cFamily Fit Call: Bypass the summer arguments and let an expert outside mentor build your teen's workflows 1-on-1.
