Description

If you’ve grown up with religion like I did, you’ve probably also felt from time to time that it just doesn’t add up. Certain questions haunt you at two o’clock in the morning, questions that whatever group you practice your faith with tends to frown upon. You don’t find the provincially acceptable answers at all acceptable. But however much these questions prove to be forbidden, your mind remains unsettled. You keep coming back to them—hesitant, worried, and sometimes even angry. I’ve spent my life tossing away the shackles of fear and facing these forbidden questions directly. I cannot understand why religious people should fear the truth, if the truth is supposed to set us free! So, let it out, I say. And I offer you here the fruits of my lifetime of labors, both in the hopes that you can profit from my struggles but also in the expectation that you might add something to inspire our other travelers still facing those anxious nights.

Is Marriage Compatible with a Covenant Community? The Third Person in the Marriage
2026/09/23
Is Marriage Compatible with a Covenant Community? The Third Person in the Marriage A married woman told the bishop's investigators that if her husband disapproved of how she arranged the kitchen cabinet, she had to rearrange it, and that if she objected, her pastoral leader would correct her. Who is that third person in the marriage, where did his authority come from, and what does his presence do to a sacrament the Church says no human power may govern? A reading of the full essay, in nine parts and a postscript. In this episode: • What the covenant itself says, and where the real obligations are kept • How the system enters a marriage: courtship, headship, and the parents' curriculum from childhood to college • Five incompatibilities: political, moral, familial, metaphysical and sacramental • The claim of "pastoral authority" tested against ordination, prophecy and recognition, and against the 1997 instruction Ecclesiae de mysterio • What the bishops found in South Bend, Newark, Cleveland and Steubenville, in their own words • The case for the defense, answered point by point, and the question of who decides who decides • Columbus today: the community, the campus outreach and the parish, and what the Church could do about it Mentioned: the Sword of the Spirit; Stephen B. Clark, Man and Woman in Christ; the Ottenweller Report (Steubenville, 1991); Pius XI, Casti Connubii; John Paul II, Mulieris Dignitatem; the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Code of Canon Law on consent; Aquinas on marriage as the greatest friendship; St Paul's Outreach; University Christian Outreach; Kairos. The essay, with its 177 endnotes and the census of covenant communities, is at jeffreytiel.com. Chapters are marked by Part. If this question appeals to you, my book Faith (Amazon, ISBN 9798335840705) takes up the epistemology of belief in contrast to the deceptions of cults.
John Flaherty Bonus Episode: My Experience in a Covenant Community
2026/08/22
About this recording. John Flaherty spent twenty-two years inside a Sword of the Spirit covenant community, and the four decades since collecting the movement's own documents. This is his account of it, recorded in Columbus, Ohio on 12 August 2026. The recollections, characterizations and judgments in this talk are his own, and he alone is responsible for their accuracy. Nothing he said has been cut. Where he makes a checkable claim about a named person, we have checked it against the public record; where the record differs from his recollection, we say so here rather than editing his words. Three notes on the record: 17:26 — Fr. James J. LeBar (1936–2008). Mr. Flaherty describes him as "credibly accused of sexual abuse," and volunteers this about a source he otherwise relies on. Fr. LeBar does appear on the Archdiocese of New York's public list of 26 April 2019 — but in the subsection reserved for clergy who do not meet the archdiocese's criteria for a credible accusation, and whose claims the independent administrators of its Reconciliation and Compensation Program nonetheless found eligible for compensation. He was never removed from ministry, was never charged, and died eleven years before that list was published. 1:11:32 — the two leaders of the Duquesne Weekend. The co-organizer Mr. Flaherty cannot name was Ralph A. Keifer (d. 5 July 1987), later professor of liturgy at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago — not "Roger." The two men also stand differently as to what is publicly known: Dr. William Storey's published obituary records his partnership with Philip Howland Schatz from 1980 until his death in 2014, so that is a matter of public record. We have found no comparable record concerning Dr. Keifer. What is said here about Dr. Keifer, and about either man's motives in seeking the baptism in the Spirit, rests on Mr. Flaherty's recollection alone. 1:14:39 — Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Her association with the People of Praise was widely reported in 2020. The community used the title "handmaid" for women in a particular leadership and mentoring role and later discontinued it; reporting on whether Justice Barrett personally held that title has been contested, and the community has not confirmed it. The point being made — that the People of Praise is a covenant community with a pastoral-headship structure comparable to the Sword of the Spirit's — does not depend on the title. What is a Covenant Community?
2026/08/07
With the recent nomination of a former Handmaid of a Covenant Community to the Supreme Court of the United States, many people are asking for the first time, “What is a Covenant Community?” The following description attempts to provide a deeper explanation using documentation from two major Covenant Communities as well as the experiences of former members who have exited, many after years of participation. Are there Cults Inside the Church? The Infiltration of a Catholic Parish
2026/06/29
In June 2026 a men’s group called The Arena became the men’s program of a Catholic parish in Columbus. Its founder had already written down the strategy for taking a parish, and this episode sets his own words beside the Church’s teaching. In this episode: • The institutional plumbing: St Paul’s Outreach, Christ the Cornerstone Covenant Community, the Sword of the Spirit, and the leadership and money shared between them • The diagnosis that gives John Mullen his appeal, and why the chaos he describes turns out to be explicitly gendered female • “Assume patriarchy”: servant leadership rejected, women to be “taught docility”, and the manosphere framework of hypergamy and “the longhouse” underneath it • The 2022 essay proposing intentional Catholic communities bound by shared European ancestry, and the dissident-right writers he amplifies • His opposition to democracy as such, his preference for rule by the worthy few, and institutional capture described in his own words as counter insurgency • “Find your sandbox parish”: the written strategy, the open letter to young diocesan priests, and what followed at St Mary in German Village • Where this collides with the Catechism, Gaudium et Spes, Mulieris Dignitatem and the canons on lay associations, followed by the case for the defense, the cult test applied rather than brandished, and the selective deletions that began as the essay neared publication Mentioned: John Mullen and The Arena · St Paul’s Outreach · Christ the Cornerstone Covenant Community · the Sword of the Spirit · Jordan Peterson’s Maps of Meaning · Curtis Yarvin · the Catechism of the Catholic Church · Gaudium et Spes · Mulieris Dignitatem Cults are taken up at greater length in Faith, available on Amazon, which sets out the epistemology, morality and metaphysics behind them. Am I in a Religion or a Cult?
2026/06/16
A cult is an organization whose ideology and behavioral demands coercively infringe personal, familial, political or epistemic liberty. This episode sets out twenty-five concrete differences between a religion and a cult, then turns the test on the listener. In this episode: • Leadership: institutional checks on power, cults of personality that collapse when the leader dies, leaders who exempt themselves from their own rules, and claims to divine or prophetic status • Concealment: teaching withheld from outsiders, criticism placed off limits, dissent recast as sin or sickness, and jargon used as a thought-terminating cliche • Recruitment: front organizations, love bombing, and why cults court the young and unsettled rather than experienced adults • Daily life: micromanagement of ordinary decisions, intrusion into marriage and sexuality, fasting used to lower resistance, and time consumed entirely • Outsiders and leavers: shunning and disconnection, forced severance from family, and the many ties that make leaving costly • Money and law: public disclosure and audit against unaccountable funds, escalating payments for advancement, and evasion of legal jurisdiction • The closing test: ask what the organization is actually for, and then ask it of your own Mentioned: John Locke on liberty · Robert Jay Lifton · NXIVM and Keith Raniere · Aum Shinrikyo and the 1995 Tokyo attack · Scientology's disconnection policy · Leah Remini Cults are taken up at greater length in Faith, available on Amazon, which sets out the epistemology, morality and metaphysics behind them. How Many Baptisms are There?
2025/07/24
The Creed says one baptism. Yet a second one, the “baptism of the Spirit”, is now offered at Catholic retreats as well as Pentecostal ones. Where did it come from, and what is it? In this episode: • The early variation in practice as the gospel moved beyond full Jewish converts, and what the signs were for • Hebrews 2:1-4: wonders as God’s authentication of apostolic authority rather than as permanent equipment • Why present-day healings and exorcisms do not look like what Jesus and the apostles did • 1 Corinthians 13:8 in the Greek middle voice, and Augustine’s fellow bishops arguing over what the gift had even been • Joseph Smith’s Methodist milieu, the Great Awakening, and the hunt for a second authenticating experience • Ecstatic speech from the Montanists onward, and what linguists found in recordings of Pentecostal services • Laying on of hands without a bishop or priest, and why that amounts to an unauthorized eighth sacrament Mentioned: Hebrews 2:1-4 · 1 Corinthians 13:8 · St Augustine · the Montanists · Joseph Smith · John Wesley · Jonathan Edwards · George Whitefield · Juan Diego and the Virgin of Guadalupe Cults are taken up at greater length in Faith, available on Amazon, which sets out the epistemology, morality and metaphysics behind them. When are the Last Days?
2025/07/18
If you knew Jesus was returning in exactly seventeen months, what would you change? People have been answering that question since the apostles were still alive, and their answers fall into a pattern. In this episode: • Montanus in Phrygia with his two prophetesses, and the same impulse resurfacing in North African Donatism • The year 1000, Joachim of Fiore’s Age of the Holy Spirit set for 1260, and the Taborites calling one another brother and sister • The Münster Rebellion, Thomas Müntzer’s Eternal League of God under its rainbow banner, and Savonarola in Florence • Ann Lee and the Shaking Quakers, Joseph Smith’s fifty-six year prediction, and William Miller’s date of 23 April 1843 • John Darby, premillennialism and the Tribulation, down through Pat Robertson’s guarantee about 1982 • Four features common to nearly all of them: an unexamined prophet, salvation by group conformity, action against the state, and denunciation of the Church itself • Matthew 24:36 and Peter at Pentecost: why the Last Days began in the first century, and Paul’s rule for the apocalyptic freeloaders at Thessaloniki Mentioned: Montanus · Joachim of Fiore · the Taborites · Thomas Müntzer · Girolamo Savonarola · Ann Lee · William Miller · John Darby · Matthew 24:36 · 2 Peter 2:1-3 Cults are taken up at greater length in Faith, available on Amazon, which sets out the epistemology, morality and metaphysics behind them. Are Unforgivable Sins Real?
2024/06/10
Jesus says there is exactly one sin that will not be forgiven, in this age or the next. Finding out what it is, and whether you have already committed it, is worth the discomfort. In this episode: • The setting in Matthew 12: a man made blind and mute by a demon, healed on both counts at once, and what the crowd concluded • The Pharisees’ counter-claim that he drives out demons by the power of Beelzebul • The Jewish precedent for miraculous authentication, from Moses before Pharaoh’s sorcerers onward • What follows if divine action in the world can always be reassigned to the devil: forgiveness itself becomes unreachable • Why the sin is named as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit rather than against the Son • Jesus’s rebuttal in parts: a kingdom divided against itself, the Pharisees’ own exorcists, the plundered house, and gathering against scattering • David Hume’s case that no miracle can ever reasonably be attributed to God, and why a blanket dismissal is the same move Mentioned: Matthew 12:22-32 · Moses and Pharaoh’s sorcerers · David Hume This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. How Did We Get Here? The Evolution of Transgender Ideology
2024/02/23
Incoherent ideas do not arrive from nowhere. This episode traces one philosophical move — that consciousness constitutes reality — from Kant through Hegel and Marx to the identity politics of the present. In this episode: • Realism in the Greek and Roman philosophers: a world that is what it is regardless of how you think about it • Kant’s reversal, and why he insisted that human consciousness is nevertheless fixed • Hegel letting consciousness change, and the question he could not answer about strains of it bifurcating • Marx replacing human nature with two consciousnesses, bourgeoisie and proletariat, and denying there are human beings at all • The same move made again with race, then with sexual orientation, then with gender • Thomas Kuhn carrying class-bound thinking into the sciences, where paradigms never rationally engage one another • The American turn that individualizes all of it, and why the episode still insists on compassion for people in the throes of the ideology Mentioned: Immanuel Kant · G. W. F. Hegel · Karl Marx · Charles Darwin · Thomas Kuhn · Realism This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. More at jeffreytiel.com.
Can I Change My Gender?
2024/02/09
The cultural account says sex is the biology you were born with and gender is what you feel yourself to be. This episode argues the order is exactly backwards: gender is the higher category, and it does not originate in you. In this episode: • How “sex”, “sexual preference” and “gender” are currently distinguished, and where the doctrine of fluidity leads • Two ironies in fluidity: identifying as a woman presupposes what a woman is, and total self-determination empties both words of content • The principle holding it together — that thought causes reality — traced to German philosophy of the 1800s • Standing on the railway tracks with a train coming: why reality does not conform to the way we want things to be • Genesis 1: humanity made in God’s image, male and female, and why “our image” carries both plurality and love • Gender as a polarity running up and down the chain of being — the angels, the Church as Bride and Mother, Christ as both the host and the one eaten • Why the mind has a claim on the body and the body a claim on the mind, since the person is a composite of both Mentioned: Genesis 1:26-27 · the imago Dei · Star Trek This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. What did Mary Know?
2023/12/18
Mary’s first response to an archangel is not terror. It is thought — she is troubled by the greeting itself, before Gabriel has said anything of substance. That means she already knew what was coming. In this episode: • What people in Scripture actually do when an angel appears, and the two things angels always have to say first • Why Mary is not shaken by the angel but by “Hail”, a greeting fit for royalty • Genesis 3 and the enmity between the woman and the serpent, her offspring striking at the head and the serpent at the heel • Why the demons rage specifically at what women are and do, and what every birth does to their project • Isaiah 7 and Isaiah 9: a virgin conceiving, Immanuel, and a son on David’s throne • Putting it together from where Mary stands — Jewish, of the tribe of Judah, a virgin, and being hailed • Isaiah 53, and why the woman who had treasured that text is the one who stays at the cross Mentioned: Genesis 3:15 · Isaiah 7 · Isaiah 9 · Isaiah 53 · Luke 1 · the Annunciation This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. Why Does Mary Matter?
2023/12/05
Co-Redemptrix, Queen of Heaven, Mother of God: no person outside the papacy rankles Protestants more. What do Catholics actually mean by those titles, and what does the text itself say? In this episode: • Why Catholics do not worship Mary, and where the highest titles given to any human person come from • What participating in redemption does and does not mean, since only Jesus is the lamb of God • Theotokos at the Council of Ephesus, and why the title says nothing about God having an origin • Gabriel’s royal greeting at the Annunciation, and why it is entirely inappropriate for a peasant girl • Elizabeth’s Spirit-induced prophecy, the Magnificat, and “all ages will call me blessed” • At the cross, Jesus giving his mother to John, and why the Church reads that as motherhood of the whole Church • Why Jesus calls his own mother “Woman” at the wedding at Cana Mentioned: the Council of Ephesus · theotokos · the Magnificat · the wedding at Cana This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. How do we Face the Challenge of Infertility?
2023/11/28
The Christmas story does not begin with the Annunciation. It begins with an infertile couple, Elizabeth and Zechariah — which is where an Advent question about childlessness belongs. In this episode: • The CDC estimate: nearly 20% of American couples, slightly above the worldwide rate of about 18% • Why the emotional, familial and marital losses are real, and why there is nothing wrong with feeling them intensely • How an injury of this size can crack a marriage, and why couples should not try to carry it alone • Procreation read more widely: bringing forth something good and beautiful from within yourselves • A caution about the sexual glue — not letting the project of making a baby displace making love • Adoption, and how gruelling the American road to it usually is • Hope as the engine of love, and the signs that God has not forgotten childless couples Mentioned: Elizabeth and Zechariah · the theological virtue of hope This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. What if we are not Alone?
2023/07/12
Congress keeps being briefed by whistleblowers about recovered craft, and researchers think Disclosure is close. If it comes, what would the Church actually have to say about intelligent creatures who are not human? In this episode: • Why abundant life in a universe this size should not surprise us, nor that some of it is personal • Whether such species would be theists, and whether God may already have intervened in their worlds • What the bishops and the Pope would have to weigh about baptising them if he had not • The moral baseline — treat them as persons, do not open fire on an unfamiliar form — and what changes if some prove hostile • The worry that Disclosure would shatter the world order, and the conceit about being at the centre of the universe • Whether the Incarnation could have an analogue proper to another nature, or happened once and only here • Romans 8:19-21 read more widely: creation awaiting the revelation of the children of God Mentioned: C. S. Lewis · Romans 8:19-21 This question also appears in More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, available on Amazon. More at jeffreytiel.com.
How do I Know if I should become a Priest?
2023/06/04
People expect a call — a voice, a sign, something unmistakable. The religious orders that actually select candidates for the priesthood use nothing of the kind. In this episode: • Why the non-marital vocation is rare, and why people assume God must therefore single someone out for it • How the great holy orders screen candidates, using the same criteria St Paul set out • The triple test of constitution, competence and qualification, with desire as the precondition • Why your constitution is not random genetics, and what follows if God designed it • The elaborate schemes people build for turning their own feelings and desires into the voice of God • Moses and the burning bush: why God authenticates a mission with public signs when he wants it known • The man born blind, and why nobody could have read God’s purpose in it beforehand Mentioned: St Paul · Moses and the burning bush · the man born blind Many of these questions are collected in Questions from the Unsettled Mind and More Questions from the Unsettled Mind, both available on Amazon. Also, for a more in-depth discussion of this question, see Faith, also available at Amazon. More at jeffreytiel.com.
