On this episode of Pugilistically Inclined, we continue our discussion of Black boxing pioneers, inspired by Louis Moore’s book “I Fight for a Living: Boxing and the Battle for Black Manhood, 1880-1915.” In this second installment of our Black Boxing Pioneers series, we focus primarily on the careers of Peter Jackson, George Dixon, and Joe Gans, as well as the shifting notions of manhood and respectability attached to each.

On today’s episode we discuss black boxing pioneers in England and America, from 1800 to roughly 1890. This is the first in a series of three episodes based on Louis Moore’s book I Fight for a Living: Boxing and the Battle for Black Manhood, 1880-1915. For this episode, we focus primarily on Bill Richmond, Tom Molineaux, and George Godfrey. For this installment, we also relied quite a bit on Luke G. Williams book Richmond Unchained.
