246. I Had All The Answers… But Still Couldn’t Stop Drinking - Interview with Paul
2026/04/24
“I felt like I had all the answers… I just couldn’t quite put them together.”
In episode 246 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick is joined by Paul to talk about what it’s really like trying to stop drinking alcohol when you already understand the problem.
You’ve read the books. Listened to the podcasts. You know alcohol isn’t serving you.
But you’re still stuck.
Paul describes it as having all the pieces of the puzzle… just not knowing how to put them together.
This conversation breaks down why that happens and what actually helps you move from thinking about change to applying it in real life.
They talk about alcohol habits, daily triggers, self-talk, and why relying on willpower alone keeps men stuck in the same cycle.
You’ll also hear how Paul went from drinking heavily most evenings to building consistency, clarity, and momentum without alcohol.
Including what happened when he slipped… and why it didn’t send him back to square one.
In this episode:
Why it’s hard to stop drinking alcohol even when you know what to doThe “puzzle” feeling and why men get stuck in the drinking cycleHow to break the habit of drinking and start applying what you knowThe role of self-talk in changing your relationship with alcoholHow to deal with alcohol cravings and urges in real timeWhy one slip doesn’t mean failure when quitting alcoholWhat changes physically and mentally when you stop drinkingIf you’re trying to quit drinking, cut down alcohol, or understand why you keep going back to it… this episode will help you see what’s been missing.

245. Alcohol, Creativity, and Emotional Avoidance with Ezra Vancil
2026/04/10
Does alcohol feel like it's become the solution to your problems.... only to discover they are still there the next day?
In episode 245 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick sits down with Ezra Vancil who once felt that way.
Ezra’s a musician, and like a lot of creatives, alcohol was part of the environment. Part of the identity. Part of how he got through things.
But more than that… it felt like it worked for him in the beginning.
It helped him open up, to deal with fear and to feel less alone.
Over time, it became his answer to everything.
That’s why this one stands out.
We’re not talking about alcohol like it’s just a bad habit.
We’re talking about the role it plays… and why it can feel so hard to let go of.
Awesome topics you'll hear covered:
Why alcohol can feel like the only way to copeHow it becomes the default without you even realisingWhat happens when it stops working the way it used toThe emotional side of this that most people avoidAnd how things started to change for EzraThere’s a moment where Ezra describes himself as a “40-year-old 16-year-old” emotionally… and that pretty much sums up what alcohol had been doing in the background.
Not ruining his life overnight, just keeping him stuck.
This isn’t about judging drinking. It’s about understanding it.
Because when you understand why you drink… you give yourself a real chance to do something different.

244. Relationships, Alcohol & Loving Power with Monica Tanner
2026/04/03
Most relationship problems don’t come from one big moment.
They build over time.
In episode 244 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, I’m joined by couples and marriage therapist Monica Tanner to explore what actually shapes the quality of our relationships, not the big arguments, but the small, everyday things that often go unnoticed.
We talk about unspoken expectations, broken commitments, and how the way you show up day to day impacts your partner, your family, and yourself.
A big part of this conversation is honesty.
Being honest about your behaviour.Being honest about what you need. And being willing to have conversations that most people avoid.
We also get into the role alcohol can play.
Not as the only issue, but as something that can lower your standards, affect your decisions, and lead to breaking promises to yourself, which then impacts trust in your relationships.
Monica shares practical ways to communicate more effectively, including how to make clear, respectful requests instead of criticising or blaming. We also challenge common relationship clichés and look at why they can create imbalance and resentment over time.
We finish by exploring how to handle difficult situations in relationships, especially when change isn’t happening, and how to make decisions you can genuinely stand behind.
If you want to understand your relationship better and start showing up differently, this episode will give you a clear place to start.

243. Why You’re Still Drinking (Even Though You Want to Stop) with Hunter
2026/03/27
Ever known something needed to change… but just carried on anyway?
In episode 243 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick sits down with one of his current clients, Hunter, who shares what it actually looks like to stop drinking alcohol, break the cycle, and finally follow through.
There was no big crisis or wake-up call.
Just years of waking up thinking, why am I still doing this?
If you’ve ever tried cutting back on alcohol, doing Dry January, or telling yourself “this time will be different”… this episode will resonate.
Hunter talks about that space a lot of men sit in…
Life’s working. Career’s solid. Family’s good.
But alcohol is quietly taking more than it gives.
What makes this conversation different is how honest it is about that middle ground.
The place where you know… but haven’t acted yet.
And what shifted when he stopped trying to think his way through it… and actually spoke to someone who gets it.
In this episode, you’ll hear:
Why “I’ll just cut back” keeps you stuck in the same loopThe power of being able to speak openly without feeling judgedHow setting a simple, reachable goal (instead of forever) builds momentumWhy most people already know what they need to do… they just haven’t acted on itThe difference between consuming content and actually applying itHow your routines, not alcohol itself, are often the hardest thing to changeWhy alcohol doesn’t support anything you say you valueAwesome takeaways:
You don’t need a big moment to make a meaningful changeBeing heard properly can unlock more than another podcast or bookClarity comes from conversation, not just thinkingYou don’t have to commit to “forever” to get startedMost of the worries you have about stopping… don’t play out

242. Why You Don’t Trust Yourself (And How To Rebuild It)
2026/03/13
Have you ever said you were going to stop drinking for a bit… and then didn’t?
Or told yourself you’d start exercising, wake up earlier, eat better, or finally follow through on something that matters to you?
And when it doesn’t happen, something subtle but powerful takes a hit.
Your trust in yourself.
In episode 242 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick explores why so many of us struggle with self-confidence and why the real issue often isn’t discipline, motivation or willpower… it’s self-trust.
Whether you’re trying to stop drinking, change habits, improve your mindset or simply become a man who follows through on what he says, confidence plays a huge role in making lasting change.
Patrick breaks down the difference between confidence and self-confidence, the three places we tend to doubt ourselves (capability, value and identity), and how small broken promises slowly erode our belief in ourselves over time.
He also shares a powerful insight from his recent Disrupt group coaching call:
“Little defeats bring you down. Small wins rise you up.”
You’ll learn why confidence isn’t something you’re born with, but something you build through experience, repetition and keeping the promises you make to yourself.
If you’ve ever wondered why change can feel difficult, why motivation comes and goes, or why you sometimes doubt your ability to follow through, this episode will help you understand what’s really going on and how to start rebuilding trust in yourself.
In this episode you’ll explore:
• The difference between confidence and self-confidence• The three places we doubt ourselves: capability, value and identity• How broken promises slowly erode self-trust• Why small wins are the real foundation of confidence• Practical ways to build confidence and trust yourself again
This episode is especially helpful for men who are rethinking alcohol, changing habits, building confidence, or working on personal development and mindset.

241. It's Never Too Late to Change with Ronnie Figueroa
2026/03/06
What’s really driving your relationship with alcohol?
Get ready to hear Patrick Fox explore addiction, vulnerability, and the deeper connection many people lose when alcohol becomes a coping mechanism.
In episode 241 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick sits down with Ronnie Figueroa for a thoughtful conversation about addiction, healing, and what it really takes to change your relationship with alcohol.
Ronnie shares his story of growing up around alcohol and starting to drink at just 11 years old. Like many people, alcohol helped him feel more confident and less anxious, and over time it became something he relied on throughout life.
Despite building a career, earning degrees and running a successful business, drinking was still quietly influencing his health, decisions and sense of self.
After a near-death experience in his fifties, Ronnie began turning his life around. At 65 he stopped drinking, and now in his seventies and years alcohol-free, he’s living proof that it’s never too late to change your life.
Together, Patrick and Ronnie explore the deeper side of addiction recovery for men, including ego, vulnerability, and why asking for help can be the turning point many people avoid.
They also discuss Ronnie’s approach to holistic alcohol coaching, and the simple awareness practices that help people reconnect with their bodies, calm their minds, and begin creating a healthier sober life.
• Why many people feel like something is “missing” and turn to alcohol to fill the gap
• The danger of believing you have drinking under control
• Why vulnerability and asking for help can unlock real change
• Simple practices to reconnect with yourself and your body
• Why it’s never too late to rethink life and start again
The Alcohol ReThink Podcast is about creating a stigma-free space where people can question their habits, explore their relationship with alcohol, and discover what life can look like on the other side.

240. Breaking a 20-Year Drinking Habit with Ritchie
2026/02/27
Most men don’t ReThink alcohol because everything's fallen apart.
They ReThink because they're tired of the trade-off. A few hours of switch-off in exchange for a foggy head, lost energy and another quiet promise to 'sort it out next week.
In episode 240 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick is joined by Ritchie, a long-time listener who decided to change his relationship with alcohol after more than 20 years of what many might call 'normal' drinking .
There was no rock bottom moment. No crisis. Just a growing awareness that alcohol had gone from something social to something relied upon.
Ritchie shares what it was like growing up in UK drinking culture. Friday nights in a field at 15. University midweek sessions. Rugby matches followed by beers. Watching Liverpool with drinks before, during and after the game. It wasn’t chaos. It was routine. And that familiarity made it harder to question.
After one night where a few beers left him feeling worse than expected, something clicked. He didn’t decide to quit forever. He set himself a target of 100 days and committed to seeing what would change.
What followed wasn’t easy.
He talks honestly about the first 30 days, thinking about beer constantly and driving past Morrisons with the urge to turn left out of habit. That pull back to what’s comfortable is real, and he doesn’t sugar-coat it.
Awesome things you’ll hear during this conversation:
• Why you don’t need to hit rock bottom to make a change
• What the early weeks feel like when your brain keeps suggesting 'just one'
• How to interrupt autopilot patterns, even something as simple as the drive home
• The impact alcohol was having on his sleep, training and recovery
• Why speaking to someone external made all the difference
By 111 days, Ritchie noticed clearer thinking, stronger training sessions and heavier lifts at 38 than he’d ever managed before.
More importantly, he began to understand what alcohol had been doing for him emotionally, and why letting it go felt uncomfortable at first.
This episode is a grounded, honest look at what it takes to break a long-standing pattern, especially when that pattern looks normal from the outside.
If you’ve ever found yourself debating whether to stop at the shop on the way home, this one will resonate.

239. Redefining Failure with Sam LaPage
2026/02/20
If you’ve ever wondered:
'Who am I without alcohol?'
'Why do I still want it even though it’s hurting me?'
'Is it possible to feel genuinely good without it?'
This episode is for you.
In episode 239 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick sits down with fitness coach and sobriety advocate Sam LaPage for a raw, honest, and surprisingly uplifting conversation about identity, injury, shame, and learning how to actually love yourself.
Sam grew up in a small town where drinking in the park wasn’t just something you did… it was who you were.
Alcohol became confidence. Belonging. Fun. Validation.
At the same time, he was living a double life, chasing excellence in rowing while quietly numbing feelings of not being 'enough.'
When a back injury ended his rowing career in the US, it didn’t just take away a sport. It took away an identity.
What followed was years of drinking driven by failure, shame, and a deep sense of not measuring up.
And then something changed.
Awesome topics covered in this episode:
Why his drinking was never really about alcohol
How shame became the real cycle keeping him stuck
The unexpected power of fitness in building sobriety
What it actually means to 'love yourself' (and how awkward that felt at first)
Why early sobriety can feel flat… and why that’s normal
The difference between chemical highs and genuine joy
How he rebuilt his identity without alcohol
Patrick and Sam also dive into vulnerability, masculinity, and why being 'radically human' means feeling everything, not escaping it.

238. Journalling and the Art of Self-Coaching
2026/02/13
Most men have 'tried' journalling.
A notebook bought with good intentions, three intense entries, then… a book left to gather dust.
In episode 238 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick Fox explores why journalling often feels uncomfortable and why that discomfort might be showing up.
Patrick shares his own journey with writing. In the beginning, his journal was basically a written version of his inner critic. Pages filled with self-judgement, frustration and 'what’s wrong with me?' energy.
A jam-packed pity party on lined paper. No wonder it felt unpleasant.
What changed?
He realised a powerful distinction: you are not your thoughts. And writing something down does not make it true.
This episode dives into how journalling can shift from self-criticism to self-coaching. Instead of reinforcing negative beliefs, Patrick explains how to question them, challenge them and gently reshape them using bridge or ladder thoughts that actually feel believable.
He also introduces a brilliant analogy from The Magic of Believing, a book written over 75 years ago and recently referenced by Tony Robbins in an interview.
The idea? Thoughts are like stones thrown into water. The bigger the stone, the stronger the ripples. Anxious thoughts often carry huge emotional energy. But with practice, you can strengthen new thoughts until their ripples begin to override the old ones.
This isn’t about forced affirmations or pretending everything’s fine.
It’s about training your mind.
If you’re ReThinking alcohol, struggling with discipline, or tired of the mental back-and-forth in your own head, this episode will show you how a simple notebook can become one of the most powerful tools in your change process.
As ever, take what works and leave the rest.

237. Bringing 'two beer' Energy to a Sober Life with Louis Church
2026/02/06
“Six hours of fun would cost me four days of anxiety afterwards.”
In episode 237 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick is joined by Louis Church, co-founder of High and Dry Beer, for one of those conversations that goes way beyond drinking or not drinking.
They talk about alcohol-free beer, mushrooms, running, and how on earth you even go about building a non-alcoholic lager that actually tastes good.
And then, pretty quickly, the conversation goes somewhere much deeper.
Louis shares his honest relationship with alcohol, what binge drinking looked like for him, and why stepping away from drinking forced him to face thoughts and emotions he’d spent years avoiding.
They explore the uncomfortable middle of sobriety. The bit no one really prepares you for. When the initial motivation fades, you’re faced with your own mind.
Awesome things you'll hear about:
Why stopping drinking can feel amazing at first… and then suddenly feel hard
Grieving alcohol instead of pretending you don’t miss it
Social pressure, people-pleasing, and drinking for other people’s comfort
The myth that you lose your personality without alcohol
Learning you don’t need alcohol to be confident, funny, or connected
Therapy, journaling, and sitting with uncomfortable feelings instead of escaping them
Responsibility, values, and choosing the man you actually want to be
They also talk about the creation of High and Dry Beer, how the idea was born during marathon training, why it’s brewed properly rather than sweetened and watered down, and why Louis cares more about presence and meaning than telling anyone what they should do.
This isn’t a quit-forever episode, it’s not preachy, and it’s definitely not anti-fun.
It’s a real conversation about identity, choice, maturity, and what opens up when you start choosing yourself over alcohol.

236. Disrupt Your Drinking Habit
2026/01/30
Most drinking habits don’t come from a lack of willpower.
They come from patterns.
In episode 236 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick explores why drinking so often runs on autopilot and how real change starts when you stop treating alcohol as a problem to fix and begin seeing it as a habit you can interrupt.
You’ll learn how habits work as loops that seek completion, why thoughts about drinking can feel urgent even when you don’t actually want a drink, and how the brain looks for predictability rather than pleasure.
Patrick shares a recent client example that shows what becomes possible when you create space between thought, feeling, and action, and how learning to recognise and interrupt these loops can radically change your relationship with alcohol in a surprisingly short amount of time.
Cool things you'll hear about:
Why drinking habits repeat even when you want them to stop
How the brain seeks completion, not alcohol itself
Where disruption actually happens (before the action)
Why awareness beats willpower
How seeing drinking as a habit removes shame and self-blame
Patrick also explains how this work forms the foundation of the DISRUPT group coaching programme, starting soon, for men who don’t feel out of control but are tired of repeating the same patterns.
If you feel like your drinking isn’t ruining your life but is quietly running it, this episode will help you see what’s really going on and where change actually begins.

235. Emotions Aren't the Problem
2026/01/23
Do you ever find yourself thinking you shouldn’t feel anxious, sad, or have a bad day?
In episode 235 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick explores why so many of us judge our emotions, apologise for how we feel, or try to think our way out of discomfort, and how that often makes things harder rather than easier.
Drawing on his coaching work and a deeply personal week, Patrick reflects on emotional conditioning, the messages many of us learned growing up, and what happens when emotions aren’t allowed space.
He shares his experience of attending a funeral, noticing how grief showed up in his body, and the contrast of moving from loss to laughter in the same day.
Rather than trying to fix emotions or force positivity, this episode looks at a different approach: curiosity instead of resistance.
Awesome things you'll hear about:
Why many men believe certain emotions aren’t acceptable
How emotional conditioning starts early and gets passed down
Why we apologise for how we feel
The problem with plastering positive thinking over difficult emotions
How grief, sadness, and anxiety show up in the body
Why distraction, food, alcohol, and scrolling often become coping tools
How resistance can make emotions louder
Why getting curious about feelings can reduce unnecessary suffering
If you’re tired of judging how you feel or trying to escape it, this episode will help you look at emotions differently, without turning them into a problem that needs fixing.

234. Drop the Shame and Quit Alcohol Like a Boss with Jessica Clark
2026/01/16
In this episode of the Alcohol Rethink Podcast, Patrick Fox is joined by sober author and Alcohol Change UK Community Champion Jessica Clark.
Jessica shares her honest journey from questioning her drinking in her teens to becoming alcohol-free and writing her first book, How to Quit Alcohol Like a Boss.
This conversation is for anyone who feels stuck in the grey area, not at rock bottom, but knowing alcohol takes more than it gives.
Patrick and Jessica explore the exhausting mental battle around alcohol, the shame that comes from comparing yourself to “normal drinkers”, and how alcohol quietly shapes identity, anxiety, food choices, and self-worth over time.
They talk openly about what actually happens when you remove alcohol, why early sobriety can feel uncomfortable, and how learning to feel again is part of the process.
There’s also a real-world look at sober socialising, stag and hen dos, dopamine, energy levels, and why quitting alcohol isn’t a loss, it’s a boss move.
If you’ve ever thought, “Why can everyone else drink normally but I can’t?” this episode will help you see things very differently.
Key takeaways
There is nothing wrong with you – alcohol works exactly as designed
The mental negotiation around drinking is what exhausts people the most
Early sobriety can feel flat or uncomfortable because peace is unfamiliar
Alcohol often drives anxiety, low mood, poor food choices, and shame
Removing alcohol creates space to rediscover who you are without it
Explore
Why moderation feels harder than quitting altogether
How alcohol impacts dopamine, energy, and emotional regulation
Identity shifts that happen when alcohol is no longer the centre of social life
Why comparison to other drinkers keeps people stuck
How compassion and understanding speed up change

233. The Mental Game of Sober
2026/01/09
Stopping drinking is one decision. Learning how to think differently about alcohol is another.
In episode 233 of The Alcohol ReThink Podcast, Patrick explores the Mental Game of Sober and the mindset skills that make the biggest difference when rethinking alcohol, whether you’re considering a break, in early sobriety, or continuing alcohol free.
Drawing on over five years of sober coaching and a decade of life coaching, Patrick breaks down three core mindset skills he’s seen consistently help men change their relationship with alcohol and themselves.
This episode focuses on awareness, identity, and choice. It looks at how alcohol influences the way men think, how to handle triggers without white knuckling, and how to shift from seeing sobriety as a loss to seeing it as a gain.
Awesome topics you'll here about:
Why mindset matters as much as behaviour when rethinking alcohol
How developing self-awareness helps you respond to urges rather than react to them
The difference between scarcity thinking and abundance thinking in sobriety
How “playing it forward” helps deal with triggers and reinforces identity
Why sobriety becomes easier when it aligns with what matters most to you
This episode is for men who know alcohol isn’t serving them anymore but want to feel clearer, steadier, and more confident in their decisions. Not perfect. Just more aligned.
If you’re ready to strengthen your mental game and rethink alcohol in a way that actually lasts, this episode will give you a solid place to start.

232. Best of the Best 2025
2025/12/26
Get ready to hear all the best bits in one place....
In Best of the Best 2025, Patrick brings together the four most listened-to episodes of the year and pulls out the moments that resonated most for listeners in 2025.
Released on Patrick’s 7th soberversary, this episode takes listeners on a journey through what changing your relationship with alcohol actually looks like in real life.
Across these clips, you’ll hear the questions men ask at the start, what happens in the messy middle, and what shifts when alcohol is no longer running the show. There are real conversations, real stories, and practical insights that resonated more than anything else on the podcast this year.
From understanding what happens when you stop drinking, to hearing from men who’ve stepped away from alcohol, to learning what it really means to protect your sobriety early on, this episode brings together the themes that mattered most.
Whether you’re just starting to question your drinking, stuck in the on-off cycle, or finding your feet without alcohol, this episode offers clarity, reassurance, and a reminder that you’re not broken and you’re not alone.
This isn’t about perfection or white-knuckling your way through. It’s about awareness, self-trust, and deciding who you want to be moving forward.
A powerful episode to reflect on the year that’s been and head into what’s next with a bit more honesty and intention.
