Being a team player in sports and as a leader
2022/06/02
In this episode I talk with Mike Thorne about leadership and his experience as a coach who works with CEO's. Mike is very passionate about sports which plays an important part of his approach in his coaching work and it is a really interesting conversation about how sports and leadership link together so well. About Mike: Mike's mission is to restore people’s sense of dignity to unleash their greatness. His vision is a world where people are celebrated for who they are and recognise that they are worthy of self-esteem simply because they are here.  He  specialises in facilitating transformations in human beings and business leaders by helping them create trust communities and cultures of inclusion. These communities and cultures help people feel inspired, increase their engagement, and improve organisational performance on every level. Mike injects a passion for excellence into those he serves while delivering impact through sustainable growth.  Over the course of Mike's career,  he has worked in sales, business development, and leadership in seven different industries, including as President of the Wholesale Division for Yankee Candle; Senior Vice President of Global Sales, Customer Service, and Analytics for Rawlings Sporting Goods; and CEO of Challenger Turf Inc. For the past five years, he has advised business executives through his own company,  Ask Inside which he is transitioning to Trust Inside.  In 2021, Mike continued that work by becoming a Vistage Chair, facilitating meetings of northern New England’s business owners and CEO’s who come together to solve problems, support each other, and design innovative solutions to grow their businesses.  Members come in as CEO’s and leave as human being’s. 4 Beliefs About Time Management That Are Holding You Back: Part 2
2022/05/27
This is  the second part of two episodes on time management, where I talk about a challenge that comes up very frequently for my clients:  getting to the bottom of issues around time management.    In part 1, I talked about the four beliefs around time that I frequently see holding leaders back.  We often dive into how to improve time management and we miss an important step: investigating what we believe about time.  In this episode, I look at how to change these beliefs.  I talk about my own experience of identifying a belief around time that had held me back for many years and how I started to change it using coaching techniques.  I walk you through a simple 4 step process that could help you to reflect your own beliefs around time and make dramatic shifts in the way you live your life!  This episode is a must for any busy leader! For a more detailed article, go to our blog.  If you have found this episode useful, do please leave a review or share it with someone you think could get value from it!  Thank you!  Your support is much appreciated.    UPCOMING EVENT at Ann Collins Coaching -  Monday 6th June 8pm Plan your leadership! 4 Beliefs About Time Management That Are Holding You Back: Part 1
2022/05/20
If you've ever wondered why managing time is so difficult, you're not alone!  You are probably used to reflecting on how you use your time in the bid to be more efficient, but are you questioning your own beliefs about time?   Why is that important? Our beliefs around time impact our thoughts and in turn determine our actions!   But how do we identify our beliefs about time in the first place?   This takes a bit of digging, but in this podcast, I talk about the 4 beliefs that I see commonly holding back senior leaders:  Time is the problem: I need to be more efficient!Busy (and therefore time scarce) means successfulI "should" spending time doing....Downtime is a luxury As soon as you can identify these often hidden beliefs and consider how you might want to shift them, you start to take different action.  Tune in to hear more about these 4 beliefs and in part 2, I talk about how to change them.  For a more detailed article, go to our blog. People and change in organisations: keeping it personal
2022/05/12
In this episode I have an incredibly interesting conversation with Mick Williams who is passionate about helping people and organisations to manage change.   He brings a wealth of experience from a varied career including many years in the Royal Air Force and then in management consulting, but what really stood out for me are the personal qualities he brings to leadership, especially in his ability to seek out and understand the unique perspectives of people impacted by change within an organisation.  We explored many aspects of leadership from forming new teams to managing change in "difficult times" and thinking about personal change in leadership.  With Mick's positive and yet very pragmatic approach, it's easy to see why he is regarded as an inspiring and highly effective leader, bringing out the best in others around him,  with a dose of good humour too!    I left the conversation feeling inspired, with a changed perspective around talking about "difficult times" and hugely grateful to him for the opportunity to explore this topic together.    About Mick: Mick Williams is a People and Change generalist who has achieved professional impact in several fields: the armed forces; the senior civil service; and management consulting (both self-employed and ‘big four’).  He is served by a set of strong values and invaluable life experiences and, typically, gets things done by creating the conditions to allow others to succeed.  He thrives when driving the four ‘engines’ of purpose, change, governance and delivery, all with a constant focus on the people context.  It is important to Mick to be able to influence society positively and he seeks out people, organisations and projects that share his values,  Mick has just returned to freelancing in order to build more choice and variety into his professional life, with a new mantra of ‘work less, work better’. He is rarely happier professionally when the people around him grow, develop, and succeed, and he hopes that a little of that will rub off on his own professional experience. No time? A 3-step process to escaping the busyness trap
2022/03/29
A short episode, but maybe one of the most important to date on the podcast!  I used to be someone who always replied, "Really busy!" when asked how I was.  When I started coaching, I realised I wasn't alone and that this stock response was quite damaging on a number of levels.  I also saw that working on it and replacing it with a more self-aware response was life changing for me and now, for my clients.  Tune in to discover my 3-step process to escaping the busyness trap for good.   Many clients find that this is the first important step towards achieving their biggest goals - maybe it could be for you too?  UPCOMING EVENTS at Ann Collins Coaching: Do check out our upcoming free events on our website!  We host one hour webinars and more in-depth workshops, for free, on a regular basis. The New Weird: Back to the Office
2022/02/17
It's an interesting and pivotal time.  A lot of people are returning to the office (Feb 2022) after working at home for almost two years.  Opinions are mixed: some are looking forward to it, others are anxious, many expect to keep the level of flexibility they have grown to appreciate, whilst some are expecting to go back to "normal".    What are the challenges for employees?  What could organisations do to make this transition easier and make the workplace a better place in the process? In this episode, I talk about the need to embrace this opportunity to put employees at the heart of the debate and make working life a better experience.    What do you think?  Do let me know! It was a huge privilege to have Julien Tornare, the CEO of Zenith, join me for this episode.  We talked about how he has rejuvenated a global luxury brand by bringing an entrepreneurial spirit, empathy and a vision of having "no limits".  He is an inspiring leader who shows great humility, an expansive vision and infectious energy and has transformed the company in 5 years, culminating in the recent launch of their new watch: DEFY Skyline that is stunning and has attracted the attention of the media worldwide in the last few weeks.  Tune in to hear what it means to Julien to "reach your star", Zenith's tagline and a sentiment that infuses his work and that of his team.  Be ready to take notes - this is a lesson in global leadership that leads to great results! About Julien Julien Tornare, born in 1972 in Geneva (Switzerland), is the CEO of Zenith.  Active for nearly two decades in the watchmaking sector, he initially worked at Raymond Weil for two years before spending 17 years at Vacheron Constantin: first as market Head for Switzerland, subsequently as the Brand’s US Director, and finally as Managing Director for Asia-Pacific. Reducing and preventing burnout in the workplace: equipping leaders to help others and themselves
2022/01/14
Following on from a previous podcast with Anna Anderson, where we looked at wellbeing, I’m delighted that Anna Pinkerton accepted the invitation to join me for a conversation around burnout in the workplace and what organisations can do to address it.   We know that burnout was already a problem before the pandemic and studies have shown that it has substantially increased in the last 2 years, which is not a surprise. Now we’re seeing that increasing numbers of employees are considering leaving their jobs and in the DDI 2021 study of leadership, burnout is cited as a major reason driving people to consider changing their jobs and even their careers. Anna talked to us about her approach to burnout and in particular to what she has termed, "burnout trauma".   Tune in to find out what she means by that and her advice to leaders who wish to minimise the risk to themselves and their organisations. To pre-order her book: MyKindaLife.org About Anna: Anna has 28 years of experience in psychotherapy, consultancy and training and is a leading expert in post-trauma stress work.   She specialises in working with senior executives, leaders of organizations, and entrepreneurs who have experienced a traumatic event, or are suffering from the debil²itating effects of accumulated long-term stress.  She has written a number of books and resources and she has a new one coming out in April of this year called: My Kinda Life.  She has devised a leadership development method where she helps leaders discover and improve their inner relationship with themselves, to ensure this kindness and solidarity is projected into their working practices.
