2020/11/09
Welcome to Taken Seriously. Our talk is about the importance of the work HR teams do, and what HR needs to do to be taken more seriously as a function.  For HR, nothing is more important than the wellbeing of our colleagues. But when it comes to keeping people safe at work, 2020 has thrown up some huge challenges (understatement of the year, I know) for businesses. “We took an early decision to shield more than the government requirement because we recognised… that there were some people that might feel more vulnerable than others.” On the latest episode of Taken Seriously, my guest Rachel Ovington, head of HR – corporate and commercial – at KP Snacks, tells me what it was like to manage half a workforce at home on full pay, and the other half on site.  The key for Rachel was constant comms. That, and establishing a two-way conversation early on. With everyone engaged, it was much easier to keep people safe, she says. How prepared were you for another lockdown?

The importance of mental health | Wellbeing during and after lockdown | Featuring Dawn Chisolm (People Experience Advocate at Papercut Software)
2020/10/16
Welcome to Taken Seriously. Our talk is about the importance of the work HR teams do, and what HR needs to do to be taken more seriously as a function.  “Wellbeing, 100% the priority”   That was a key message from Dawn Chisolm, People Experience Advocate at Papercut Software when we sat down for a virtual chat in episode 3 of Taken Seriously.  But how do you look out for someone when personal interaction is taken out of the equation?  Without those chance encounters at the coffee machine, or on the way into the office, reading someone’s mood is much, much trickier, says Dawn. Supporting team members as Papercut Software continue to work remotely is an ongoing challenge for Dawn.    Join Dawn and Lauren from Grace Personnel, as we talk about helping employees from afar, the challenges of remote wellbeing support, and the importance of mental health first aiders at work.
HR professionals | The value of the people function | Featuring Leanne Gardiner
2020/10/05
Welcome to Taken Seriously. Our talk is about the importance of the work HR teams do, and what HR needs to do to be taken more seriously as a function.  Join us for episode 2 of Taken Seriously with Leanne Gardiner, Director of People Services at InHealth. Leanne joins us to discuss how the pandemic has “punched a hole through traditional ways of working.”  She believes the future of work needs to be recalibrated to embrace the digital age and flexible working - and to put the focus firmly on mental health and wellbeing.  Flexible working is nothing new - and the desire for more of it was already there before the pandemic turned our lives upside down.  Tune into the second episode of Taken Seriously here as Leanne and I discuss what the future of work will look like, and how HR will play a major role in smashing the status quo to re-build businesses in a way that will benefit everyone.
The post-pandemic era | HR corporate marmite | Featuring Michelle Phillips
2020/09/16
Welcome to Taken Seriously.  Our talk is about the importance of the work HR teams do, and what HR needs to do to be taken more seriously as a function.  Now more than ever, HR professionals have been connecting with employees on a personal level and supporting them as the pandemic threw our working lives into turmoil.  Many HR professionals worked overtime to support their company’s employees at the expense of taking the R&R they themselves desperately needed.  People either love their HR teams or they don’t. They’re corporate marmite. I chat about this mindset shift with the insightful Michelle Phillips - HR Country Leader UK & Ireland, Nordics for BMC Software.
