Welcome back, and thanks for joining us. Today we continue our sermon series, What We Believe, drawn from the New City Catechism. If we cannot save ourselves, then where can true rescue be found? And if Jesus alone provides that salvation, what keeps us from placing our full trust in Him? Find out in this week's sermon brought by Manoa's very own Dan Crum.

AFTER DEATH YOUR...  1. Soul enters Heaven or Hell (Luke 23:42-43)  2. Body rests in Bed or Prison (Daniel 12:2)  3. Future ends in Life or Exile (John 5:28–29)    WESTMINSTER (SEE CHAPTERS 32-33) Q. What Happens After Death? A. At death, those united to Christ enter Heaven while their bodies rest as in a bed; but the wicked enter Hell while their bodies are held as in a prison. At the resurrection, the redeemed will be made perfectly whole to enjoy God forever, while the lost will be cast out from His presence into eternal exile (WCF 32.1; 33.1–2; WLC 86; 89; 90; WSC 37; 38).

Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ?  A27. No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless, God in his mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining sin and enabling works of culture for the common good (WCF 3.3–7; 7.3; 8.8; 10.1, 4; 11.4; WSC 20, 21; WLC 13, 59, 60, 61, 68).

What else does Christ’s death redeem? A: Christ's death is the beginning of the redemption and renewal of every part of fallen creation, as he powerfully directs all things for his own glory and creation's good (WCF 8.8; WCF 33.1; WLC 54; WSC 28; WSC 38).

The Memory is Forgotten (Hebrews 8:12)  New City Catechism Question 25: Does Christ’s death mean all our sins can be forgiven?  Answer: Yes, because Christ’s death on the cross fully paid the penalty for our sin, God graciously imputes Christ’s righteousness to us as if it were our own and will remember our sins no more (WCF 8.4–5, 11.1, 11.3, 15.3; WSC Q.25, 33; WLC Q.38, 44, 70, 71, 77).   

Christ Died to Redeem us... 1. From Sin’s Penalty (Romans 6:23) 2. From Sin’s Power (Galatians 2:20) 3. To God’s Presence (Ephesians 5:25–27)   NEW CITY CATECHISM Q24: Why was it necessary for Christ, the Redeemer, to die? A: Since death is the punishment for sin, Christ died willingly in our place to deliver us from the power and penalty of sin and bring us back to God. By his substitutionary atoning death, he alone redeems us from hell and gains for us forgiveness of sin, righteousness, and everlasting life (WCF 8.4; 8.5; 8.8; 11.3; WSC Q25; Q27; Q33; Q35; Q38; WLC Q38–40; Q44–45; Q70–73).

ONLY GOD CAN... 1. Suffer Effectively (John 10:17-18) 2. Bear Wrath Sufficiently (1 John 4:10) 3. Conquer Death Decisively (Rev. 1:17-18)   New City Catechism Q23: Why must the Redeemer be truly God? A: That because of his divine nature his obedience and suffering would be perfect and effective; and also that he would be able to bear the righteous anger of God against sin and yet overcome death (WCF 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5; WLC 38, 40, 52; WSC 22).    

JESUS CHRIST, IN HIS HUMANITY  1. Obeyed for You (Romans 5:18–19)  2. Suffered for You (Hebrews 2:14, 17)  3. Sympathizes with You (Hebrews 4:15)  NEW CITY CATECHISM  Q22: Why must the Redeemer be truly human?  A: That in human nature he might on our behalf perfectly obey the whole law and suffer the punishment for human sin; and also that he might sympathize with our weaknesses (WCF 8.2, 8.4; WLC 40; WSC 21–22).   

OUR BRIDGE BACK TO GOD IS A...  1. Human Redeemer (Hebrews 2:14, 17)  2. Divine Redeemer (Colossians 1:19-20)  3. Group Redeemer (Ephesians 2:13-14)  Q21. What sort of Redeemer is needed to bring us back to God?  A. One who is truly human and also truly God (WCF 8.1–8.4; WLC Q29; WSC Q21).
